Chance Cubes is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 1.21.1-5.0.2.517. Open these mystical blocks to obtain random rewards. Some rewards are helpful while others can be devastating. From hordes of zombies and death traps, to rewards that build full houses and provide next level items, you never know what you'll get! (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Chance Cubes?

2 parts

Chance Cubes is a Lucky Block alternative. You open Chance Cube blocks and get a random reward. Some rewards help you, and others can be devastating. The range runs from hordes of zombies and death traps to rewards that build full houses and hand out next-level items.[1]

You can open cubes while exploring your world, or craft them yourself if you don't feel like exploring. Pack makers and addon authors can also add their own rewards through an easy-to-read JSON file format.[1]

In this pack

The pack includes Chance Cubes version 1.21.1-5.0.2.517.[2]

Where the quest book places it

Chance Cubes appears in the quest book's "creative" chapter. One quest there, "Creative Chance Pendant" quest, has tasks for the Chance Cube, the Compact Giant Chance Cube and the Chance Icosahedron, plus an Apotheosis potion charm. It comes after quest 25CCA572C4D5CEA0.[3]

The Creative Chance Pendant shows up in a later quest in that chapter, "Ascension Tier 2 - Transcendent" quest. That quest comes after the Chance Cube quest above and nine others, and its tasks cover creative items from many different mods.[3]

The same set of tasks, including the pendant, also appears in a quest in the "thebackrooms" chapter, a quest in "Backstage", which comes after quest 25CCA572C4D5CEA0.[4]

Unverified The sources here do not show Chance Cubes on the ATM Star quest path, and no in-jar guidebook was found for the mod, so any further detail on its place in progression lives in the pack's quest book chapters named above.

How do you get started with Chance Cubes?

2 parts

Chance Cubes is a Lucky Block alternative. You open its blocks and get a random reward. Some rewards are helpful and others can be devastating, from hordes of zombies and death traps to rewards that build full houses. So go in expecting anything.[1]

The pack's recipes for this mod form a short crafting chain built around the pendants, and everything starts from the first one. Here is the order I'd go in.[5]

Step by step

  1. Craft the Tier 1 Chance Pendant first. It's the base of the chain, because the scanner, the Silk Touch pendant and the Tier 2 pendant all use it in their recipes.[5]
  2. Make the Chance Cube Scanner from a Tier 1 pendant.[5]
  3. Make the Silk Touch Chance Pendant from a Tier 1 pendant if you want it.[5]
  4. Upgrade to the Tier 2 Chance Pendant, then to the Tier 3 Chance Pendant. Each upgrade takes the pendant of the tier below.[5]

Other things to look out for

The mod has an advancement line that starts with "A Game of Chance and Skill". Two of its goals are to open a Chance Icosahedron and to break a Giant Chance Cube.[6]

In the pack's quest book, quest "Creative Chance Pendant" quest in the creative chapter has tasks for the Chance Cube, the Compact Giant Chance Cube and the Chance Icosahedron. The Creative Chance Pendant shows up as a task in quest "Ascension Tier 2 - Transcendent" quest, which comes after that one in the same chapter, and again in quest a quest in "Backstage" in the thebackrooms chapter. Both of those quests list creative items from other mods as well.[3][4]

How does Chance Cubes work?

5 parts

Chance Cubes is a Lucky Block style mod: you open a block and get a random reward, good or bad. The sources I have don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluid or item automation for it, so this section covers what is confirmed: how rewards are picked, how cubes reach the world, and the pendants and scanner.[1]

How rewards are picked

Every cube has a chance value, and rewards also have chance values. The range a cube can pick from is set by [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChanceRangeMin]] and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChanceRangeMax]]. In this pack both are 10, the same as the mod default. So a cube with a chance value of 0 can get rewards from -10 to 10.[7]

If [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.RewardsEqualChance]] were true, chance values would be ignored and every reward would be equally likely. In this pack it is false, so chance values matter.[7]

D20 cubes are a special case. With [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.D20UseNormalChanceValues]] set to false, as it is here, a D20 only ever has a chance value of -100 or 100.[7]

Which rewards are on

Default rewards are loaded, since [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.EnableDefaultRewards]] is true. The pack also leaves [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GloballyDisabledRewards]] on. That makes the mod check for rewards that are known to be bugged or not working.[7]

Individual rewards are switched on or off in the global rewards file. The pack turns these off:[8]

The file's own comment says you can also use /chancecubes enableReward and /chancecubes disableReward in game, but those commands do not change the value in the config file.[8]

Giant Chance Cubes as blocks are not disabled: [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.DisableGiantCC]] is false. Only the reward that spawns one is turned off.[7][8]

Getting cubes into your world

Natural generation is off in this pack. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GenerateOnSurface]], [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GenerateAsOre]] and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChestLoot]] are all false. The pack also changed [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.SurfaceGenerationAmount]] to 0, where the mod default is 100.[7]

What the pack does provide is its own bee loot tables. The Chance Cube appears in every one of them, with a weight of 6 in the first, 7 in the second and 8 in the third. Those weights are only relative to the other entries in each table.[9]

Pendants and the scanner

Pendants are the mod's tools. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.PendantUses]] sets the number of uses for a pendant, and it is 32 in this pack, the same as the mod default.[7]

The pendants upgrade in a chain. You craft the Tier 1 Chance Pendant first, then use it to make the Tier 2 Chance Pendant, and that in turn makes the Tier 3 Chance Pendant.[5]

Other settings

[[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.FallingBlockDropHeight]] is 20, so rewards that drop falling blocks release them 20 blocks above the cube. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.BlockedWorlds]] and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.BlockRestoreBlacklist]] are both empty here.[7]

Tip: The mod reports its version to the developer's server when the client launches. The mod page says you can switch this off by setting HolidayRewards and UserSpecificRewards to false. In this pack both are currently true.[1][7]

How do you progress through Chance Cubes?

3 parts

Chance Cubes progression in this pack is mostly about the pendants. The quest book touches the mod in only a few places, so the in-pack recipes tell most of the story.[3][5]

Quest path

Quest "Creative Chance Pendant" quest sits in the creative chapter. Its tasks are the Chance Cube, the Compact Giant Chance Cube and the Chance Icosahedron, plus a potion charm from another mod.[3]

That quest leads on to "Ascension Tier 2 - Transcendent" quest, which is a big collection of creative-style items from many mods. The Creative Chance Pendant is one of its tasks.[3]

The same set of tasks, including the Creative Chance Pendant, also appears as quest a quest in "Backstage" in the backrooms chapter.[4]

Unverified The quest data does not show how to obtain the Creative Chance Pendant, and no in-pack recipe for it was found. How you get it is unconfirmed.

Pendant tiers

The three pendant tiers are crafted one after another, so you work up from Tier 1 to Tier 3. Each one has its own crafting recipe in the pack.[5]

First is the Tier 1 Chance Pendant. It is the base of everything else in the pendant line.[5]

Tip: All the recipes above are listed as mod recipes in the pack's recipe dump. The recipe blocks show the exact in-pack ingredients, so check them before you gather materials.[5]

How does Chance Cubes work with other mods?

2 parts

The pack connects Chance Cubes to other mods in two ways that I can confirm: one custom machine recipe and a few quests that list Chance Cubes items next to items from other mods.[3][4][5]

A custom machine recipe

The pack adds a custom machine recipe, filed under world_engine, that takes the Silk Touch Chance Pendant together with the Empowered Palis Crystal Block, a Book and Glass. The pack added this recipe, so you won't find it in the base mod.[5]

Added by the pack

Custom Machine (custommachinery)

Recipe id: ftb:world_engine/enchanted_book_silk_touch

This recipe is added by the pack, not by Chance Cubes itself.

Quests that mix Chance Cubes with other mods

In the creative chapter, quest "Creative Chance Pendant" quest has tasks for the Chance Cube, the Compact Giant Chance Cube, the Chance Icosahedron and a potion charm from another mod.[3]

The Creative Chance Pendant is a task in quest "Ascension Tier 2 - Transcendent" quest, also in the creative chapter. It sits alongside creative-style items from several other mods in that same quest. This quest comes after "Creative Chance Pendant" quest, among other quests.[3]

The backrooms chapter has quest a quest in "Backstage" with the same group of tasks, including the creative pendant, so you will meet those items there too.[4]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Chance Cubes?

2 parts

Chance Cubes shows up in two quest chapters in this pack: "creative" and "thebackrooms". Neither quest has a title in the pack files, so you'll see them by their IDs.[3][4]

The creative chapter

The first Chance Cubes quest is "Creative Chance Pendant" quest. It's a hand-in quest with four tasks: a Chance Cube, a Compact Giant Chance Cube, a Chance Icosahedron and a potion charm from Apotheosis. It unlocks after another quest in the same chapter, which the sources don't describe.[3]

Next comes "Ascension Tier 2 - Transcendent" quest, which is where the Creative Chance Pendant comes in. It's one of the creative-tier items this quest asks for, alongside creative items from other mods, such as a creative motor from Create and a creative memory chip from Replication.[3]

This one sits late in the chapter. It has a long list of prerequisites, and "Creative Chance Pendant" quest is one of them. So you'll need to finish the Chance Cube quest before you can open it.[3]

The thebackrooms chapter

The "thebackrooms" chapter has a quest in "Backstage". It asks for the same set of creative items as "Ascension Tier 2 - Transcendent" quest, including the Creative Chance Pendant. Unlike the creative chapter version, it only depends on a single earlier quest, and the sources don't say what that quest asks for.[3][4]

Tip: The Chance Cube, Compact Giant Chance Cube and Chance Icosahedron only appear together in the creative chapter. If you're planning ahead, that's the quest to prepare for.[3]

Unverified The sources don't say how to obtain the creative items these quests ask for, or what the rewards are. Check the quests in-game before you plan around them.

Which Chance Cubes config options matter?

5 parts

Chance Cubes keeps its main settings in one server config, and the pack leaves most of them alone. Here are the ones you're most likely to care about, and exactly how the pack sets them.[7]

The one value the pack changed

[[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.SurfaceGenerationAmount]] is set to 0 in this pack, while the mod default is 100. It controls the chance of a chunk getting a Chance Cube on the surface, using the math 1/(surfaceGenerationAmount). Higher values make cubes rarer and lower values make them more common. The documented range is above 0.[7]

World generation

These options decide whether cubes show up in the world by themselves, and the pack sets each one to false. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GenerateOnSurface]] covers surface generation, [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GenerateAsOre]] covers ore-style generation, and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChestLoot]] covers chest loot. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.BlockedWorlds]] is an empty list, so no worlds are blocked.[7]

Chance values and rewards

  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChanceRangeMin]] and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChanceRangeMax]] are both 10, which matches the mod default. They set the range of chance values a cube can pick rewards from.[7]
  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.RewardsEqualChance]] is false, so chance values are respected instead of giving every reward an equal chance.[7]
  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.D20UseNormalChanceValues]] is false, so D20s only have a chance value of either -100 or 100.[7]
  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.EnableDefaultRewards]] and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.HolidayRewards]] are both true.[7]
  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GloballyDisabledRewards]] is true. The mod then checks a web server for rewards that are known to be bugged, and it sends your Chance Cubes version to do so.[7]

Other values

[[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.PendantUses]] is 32 and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.FallingBlockDropHeight]] is 20. Both match the mod defaults. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.DisableGiantCC]] is false.[7]

Rewards turned off in the pack

The pack's reward list is a separate file, and nearly every reward is set to true there. These are set to false:[8]

Tip: You can toggle rewards in game with /chancecubes enableReward and /chancecubes disableReward. These commands do not change the values in the config file.[8]

What changed in Chance Cubes between versions?

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Chance Cubes version 1.21.1-5.0.2.517. The mod has been in the pack since FTB StoneBlock 4 1.0.0 or earlier, so it has been there from the start or close to it.[2]

The mod's own changelog for that version only has a "Bug fixes" heading, with no individual fixes listed.[10]

Unverified There are no pack changelog entries for Chance Cubes, so no pack-specific changes to the mod across releases are documented, and the exact bug fixes in 5.0.2.517 are not listed.
