What is Mob Grinding Utils?

1 part

Mob Grinding Utils is the pack's go-to mod for building an automated mob farm. The pack ships version 1.1.10+mc1.21.1 of it, and it has been in the pack since 1.0.3 or earlier.[1]

The quest book describes it as a mod with a ton of items for setting up the perfect mob farm. The star of the show is the Mob Masher, which grinds up anything it touches. You can upgrade it with Looting Upgrades so mob kills drop even more loot. The quest also suggests pairing it with an Apotheosis spawner.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The mod's quest is "Mob Grinding" quest. It lives in the "Generating Resources" chapter, which is chapter 8 of 31 in the book, inside the "Resources & Logistics" group. The quest asks you to obtain three items:[2]

In the part of the chapter I can see, the quest has no prerequisite listed. The chapter opens with its intro quest "Resource Generation" quest, which says the chapter covers the mods that help you farm millions of items.[2]

The closest neighbour in theme is "Spawner Farms" quest, also in this chapter. It covers relocating and upgrading mob spawners to make your own mob farms, which is exactly the spawner side of the setup the Mob Grinding quest mentions. Most of the chapter's 99 quests aren't covered here, so check the quest book itself for the full text and the rest of the layout.[2]

How do you get started with Mob Grinding Utils?

3 parts

The pack's quest book covers this mod in "Mob Grinding" quest, in the "Generating Resources" chapter (group "Resources & Logistics", chapter 8 of 31). That quest asks for three things: the Mob Masher, the Mob Fan and the Entity Conveyor. They are the best first builds, so here they are in order.[2]

First: Iron Spikes, then the Mob Masher

The Mob Masher is the heart of the farm. The quest says it grinds up anything it touches and can be upgraded with Looting Upgrades to drop even more loot. Its recipe uses Iron Spikes, so make those first. The pack changed both recipes, so check the ones below rather than a mod default you remember.[2][3]

The two kill very differently. Mobs killed by the Masher do count as player kills, while mobs killed by Iron Spikes do not (the spikes do still drop the mob's XP).[4]

Tip: This pack lowers the Masher's upgrade cap. masherMaxUpgrade is set to 6 here, while the mod default is 10, so plan your Looting Upgrades around 6.[5]

Next: move the mobs with the Entity Conveyor and Mob Fan

The Entity Conveyor moves mobs and items along a horizontal vector, and mobs can spawn on it. One craft gives you 6 conveyors, and the pack changed this recipe.[3][4]

The Mob Fan pushes mobs in the direction it faces and can be modified with Mob Fan Upgrades. The pack changed its recipe too.[3][4]

When you want the fan to reach further, the pack also changed the recipes for Mob Fan Height Upgrade, Mob Fan Distance Upgrade and Mob Fan Width Upgrade. The server config option fanStrongerBlades is set to false in this pack. If it were true, the fan would only be blocked by more solid blocks.[3][5]

Then: collect the drops and see what you are doing

The Absorption Hopper vacuums up items and XP orbs in a 7x7x7 area, which is handy at the end of a grinder.[4]

The quest also suggests pairing the Masher with an Apotheosis spawner. The chapter has more quests than the ones shown here, so open the quest book for the rest of the farm-building steps.[2]

How does Mob Grinding Utils work?

6 parts

Mob Grinding Utils is built around a simple loop: move mobs to a kill zone, collect the loot and XP, then turn the XP into something useful. Here is how each piece works in this pack, using the mod's own descriptions plus the pack's config and recipes.[3][4][5]

Getting mobs where you want them

The Entity Conveyor moves mobs and items along a horizontal vector, and mobs can spawn on it. The Mob Fan pushes mobs in the direction it faces, and you can toggle its area of effect in its GUI. The pack changed the crafting recipe for both of them.[3][4]

Fan upgrades each add +1 to one stat. Height and Width are capped at 3, and Distance is capped at 10. The Mob Fan Height Upgrade has a pack-changed recipe.[3][4]

The fanStrongerBlades option is set to false in this pack. The config describes it as making the fan blades stronger, so that the fan is only blocked by more solid blocks.[5]

Killing mobs: Masher or spikes

The Mob Masher is the mod's advanced modular mob grinder. Mobs it kills do count as player kills. You enhance it with Mob Masher upgrades: Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Fire Aspect, Looting and Beheading. Each upgrade adds +1 of its effect.[4]

This pack lowers the masher upgrade limit. The masherMaxUpgrade option is 6 here, where the mod default is 10 (the allowed range is 0 to 10).[5]

Iron Spikes are the basic option. They also drop the mob's XP, but mobs killed by spikes do not count as player kills.[4]

Collecting drops and XP

The Absorption Hopper vacuums up items and XP orbs in a 7x7x7 area. You can set it to push out on any side. Fluids go into tanks and items go into inventories. Its area of effect can be toggled in its GUI, and the position can be offset in the three directions the GUI shows (W/E, N/S and D/U).[4]

The Absorption Radius Upgrade gives +1 radius per upgrade, up to a max of 6. Its recipe is pack-changed, while the hopper's own recipe is the mod's.[3][4]

Handling XP

The Jumbo Tank is a larger version of the Singularity Tank and holds 1024 buckets worth of any liquid. The Jumbo Tank recipe is pack-changed. The XP Tap attaches to the side of a tank and turns fluid XP back into orbs.[3][4]

The mould is made in two steps. First you craft an XP Mould Blank (the pack changed that recipe), then you turn the blank into an XP Mould Jelly Baby. The solidifier then makes an XP Jelly Baby from the mould. There are also reset recipes that turn the jelly baby mould back into a blank and return a solidifier to its reset state.[3]

Spawning and controlling mobs

The Entity Spawner spawns mobs in a 3x3x1 area. It uses a mob egg in the top slot and is fuelled by solid XP jelly babies. You can enhance it with XP Speed Upgrades and the Entity Spawner Height Upgrade and Entity Spawner Width Upgrade. As with the hopper, its area of effect can be toggled and its position offset in the GUI.[4]

Delightful Dirt spawns more creature mobs. They stop spawning below light level 10, and it does not work in ocean biomes. Dreadful Dirt spawns more hostile mobs, and light level 5 and above stops those spawns. It ignites in daylight if exposed to the sky.[4]

Farm safety

  • Ender Inhibitor Active stops teleportation for entities up to 8 blocks away. It can attach to any side of a solid block, and right click toggles it on and off.[4]
  • Tinted Glass lets you see into the farm without letting light in. It is tough enough to withstand Withers.[4]
  • Ender Dragon Death Muffler stops Ender Dragon death sounds within a 32 block radius, and right click hides the boss bar. The Wither version covers 8 blocks.[4]

How do you progress through Mob Grinding Utils?

4 parts

Mob Grinding Utils has no formal tiers in this pack. Nothing in the quest book or the recipes sorts its items into numbered levels, so the path below follows the quest and the links between the in-pack recipes.[2][3]

What the quest book covers

The pack has one quest for this mod: "Mob Grinding" quest, in the Generating Resources chapter (group Resources & Logistics, chapter 8 of 31). It asks for the Mob Masher, the Mob Fan and the Entity Conveyor. The book lists no quest before it.[2]

The quest text says the Mob Masher can be upgraded with Looting Upgrades for more loot, and suggests pairing it with an Apotheosis spawner. The same chapter has "Spawner Farms" quest for moving and upgrading spawners.[2]

Stage 1: the core farm

The three quest items are your starting kit. The pack has changed all three recipes, so don't rely on defaults you remember from other packs. The conveyor recipe makes 6 conveyors per craft. The Iron Spikes recipe is also pack-changed, and it feeds into the Mob Masher, so craft those first.[2][3]

How does Mob Grinding Utils work with other mods?

2 parts

Mob Grinding Utils has one confirmed recipe link to another mod in this pack, plus a quest that points you at a second mod for the spawning side of a mob farm.[2][3]

Ender IO: Tinted Glass

The pack changed the recipe for Tinted Glass. As changed, it uses an Ender IO material, Dark Steel Ingot, so you need to be into Ender IO progression before you can make it. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[3]

Apotheosis: spawners

The quest "Mob Grinding" quest asks you to get the Mob Masher, the Mob Fan and the Entity Conveyor. Its text says the Mob Masher can be upgraded with Looting Upgrades to drop more loot from kills, and suggests combining it with an Apotheosis spawner for a strong setup.[2]

The quest "Spawner Farms" quest covers that spawner side. It is about Apothic Spawners, which let you relocate and upgrade mob spawners to build your own mob farms. Both quests are in the "Generating Resources" chapter, in the "Resources & Logistics" group (chapter 8 of 31 in the book).[2]

That chapter has 99 quests, and most of them are not covered here. Check the quest book to see whether any of the others mention Mob Grinding Utils.[2]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Mob Grinding Utils?

2 parts

Mob Grinding Utils has one quest in the pack's quest book. It sits in the "Generating Resources" chapter, which is chapter 8 of 31 in the book and belongs to the "Resources & Logistics" group.[2]

The chapter opens with "Resource Generation" quest, a checkmark quest explaining that the chapter covers the mods that help you farm resources. The mob farm quest is one of many farming quests in there.[2]

Mob Grinding

"Mob Grinding" quest is the quest for this mod. It asks you to hand in three items: the Mob Masher, the Mob Fan and the Entity Conveyor. The book lists no quest that has to be finished before it.[2]

The quest text pitches the mod as the way to build an automated mob farm. It says the Mob Masher grinds up anything it touches, and that you can upgrade it with Looting Upgrades to get more loot from each kill. It also suggests pairing it with an Apotheosis spawner.[2]

The spawner idea is picked up by "Spawner Farms" quest in the same chapter. It asks for a spawner chain and a spawner. It explains that Apothic Spawners lets you move a spawner (break it with a Silk Touch pickaxe) and change its mob with a Mob Egg. That's the other half of the farm the Mob Grinding quest describes.[2]

The book doesn't link the two quests with a prerequisite arrow. They are separate quests in the same chapter.[2]

Which Mob Grinding Utils config options matter?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Mob Grinding Utils keeps its settings in the server config, and only two options are shown for this pack. One of them is a value the pack changed from the mod default, so it's worth knowing before you plan your grinder.[6]

Masher upgrade cap

masherMaxUpgrade sets the maximum number of upgrades the masher can take. The pack sets it to 6, down from the mod default of 10. The allowed range is 0 to 10, so the pack lowers the ceiling but doesn't remove upgrades entirely.[6]

Watch out: If you're used to stacking up to 10 masher upgrades from the base mod, you won't be able to here. The pack caps it at 6, so plan your setup around that.[6]

Fan blades

fanStrongerBlades is set to false in this pack. When it's true, the fan blades are stronger and the fan is only blocked by more solid blocks. With it off, the fan doesn't get that behavior. The source doesn't mark this as changed from the mod default, so I can't say the pack altered it.[6]
