What is Mob Grinding Utils?
1 part
This pack includes Mob Grinding Utils at version 1.1.10+mc1.21.1. The sources here do not describe what the mod does in detail, but they do show which of its items the pack's quest book asks for.[1]
The quest book places the mod in the "resource_generation" chapter. A quest there (ID "Mob Grinding" quest) has no title and lists item tasks for the Mob Masher, the Mob Fan and the Entity Conveyor.[2]
Where it fits
Because the quest sits in a resource chapter, the pack's quest book groups these items with resource generation. That is all the quest data shows about its place in the progression.[2]
Unverified The sources here do not show which quests come before or after this one, which group it belongs to within the chapter, or whether the ATM Star path uses the mod. Check the quest book in the game for those details.
How do you get started with Mob Grinding Utils?
5 parts
Mob Grinding Utils is about building a farm that herds, kills and collects mobs for you. In this pack, the resource generation quest chapter has one quest that asks for these machines: the Mob Masher, the Mob Fan and the Entity Conveyor. That makes a good build order, so we will follow it.[2]
The quest is "Mob Grinding" quest.[2]
Iron Spikes first
Start with Iron Spikes. They are basic spikes that also drop the mob's XP. Mobs killed by spikes do not count as player kills. You need them anyway, because the Mob Masher is crafted from them.[3][4]

Mob Masher
The Mob Masher is the advanced modular mob grinder, and you can enhance it with Mob Masher upgrades later. Unlike spikes, mobs it mashes do count as player kills. This is the machine to build your farm around.[3]

Mob Fan and Entity Conveyor
The Mob Fan pushes mobs in the direction it faces, and you can modify it with Mob Fan upgrades. The distance upgrade gives +1 with a max of 10, and the height and width upgrades each give +1 with a max of 3.[3]

Tinted Glass for the walls
Once you start building walls, use Tinted Glass. It lets you see inside the farm without letting light in, and it is tough enough to withstand Withers. This recipe was added by the pack, so it is not the mod's own recipe.[3][4]

How does Mob Grinding Utils work?
5 parts
Mob Grinding Utils is built around a simple loop: get mobs to a kill zone, collect the drops and XP, then store or use the XP. Here is how each machine in that loop works in this pack.[3]
Moving and killing mobs
The Mob Fan pushes mobs in the direction it faces, and you can toggle its area of effect in its GUI. Three upgrades extend it: the height and width upgrades each add +1 up to a max of 3, and the distance upgrade adds +1 up to a max of 10. You can craft Mob Fan Height Upgrade and Mob Fan Distance Upgrade (the Distance Upgrade) from the recipes below.[3][4]

The pack sets fanStrongerBlades to false. If it were true, the fan blades would be stronger and the fan would only be blocked by more solid blocks.[5]
The Entity Conveyor moves mobs and items along a horizontal vector, and mobs can spawn on it.[3]

The Mob Masher (Mob Masher) is the advanced modular grinder. Mobs it mashes do count as player kills. Iron Spikes are the basic alternative: they also drop the mob's XP, but mobs they kill do not count as player kills.[3]

The Mob Masher takes upgrades for Sharpness, Smite, Looting, Fire Aspect, Beheading and Bane of Arthropods, each adding +1 per upgrade. The pack changes the masher's upgrade limit: masherMaxUpgrade is 6 here, while the mod default is 10.[3][5]
Spawning mobs
The Entity Spawner spawns mobs in a 3x3x1 area. It uses a mob egg in its top slot and is fuelled by XP Jelly Babies. You can enhance it with XP Speed Upgrades and Spawner Height/Width Upgrades, toggle its area of effect and offset its position in the GUI.[3]

Delightful Dirt spawns more creature mobs. It snow-caps at night if exposed to the sky, a light level below 10 stops its spawns, and it does not work in ocean biomes. Dreadful Dirt spawns more hostile mobs and ignites in daylight if exposed to the sky, and a light level of 5 and above stops its spawns. Tinted Glass lets you see into the farm without letting light in, and it is tough enough to withstand Withers.[3]

This Tinted Glass recipe is added by the pack.
The pack's Wandering Trader also sells both dirt types: 4 blocks of either for 1 silver coin, up to 8 uses per offer.[6]
Collecting drops and XP
The Absorption Hopper vacuums up items and XP orbs in a 7x7x7 area. You can set it to push out on any side: fluids insert into tanks and items into inventories. Toggle the area of effect and offset its position in the GUI. Each Absorption Radius Upgrade adds +1 to the radius, up to a max of 6.[3]

Storing and solidifying XP
The Singularity Tank (Singularity Tank) is the base for several recipes in the pack. The Jumbo Tank is a larger version that holds 1024 buckets of any liquid. The XP Drain Singularity Tank and the XP Solidifier are also crafted from a Singularity Tank.[3][4]

An XP Tap attaches to the side of a tank and turns fluid XP back into orbs.[3]
The XP Solidifier turns fluid XP into edible XP jellies. It needs an XP mould and fluid XP in its tank, and it can be set to export horizontally. XP Speed Upgrades make it faster.[3]

The mould decides what you get. A blank mould becomes a Jelly Baby mould in a shapeless recipe, and the Jelly Baby mould can be turned back into a blank one. The solidifier recipe then makes an XP Jelly Baby from the XP Mould Jelly Baby. Those jelly babies are what fuels the Entity Spawner.[3][4]

Handy extras
- The Ender Inhibitor stops teleportation for entities up to 8 blocks away. It can be attached to any side of a solid block and toggled with a right click.[3]
- The Ender Dragon Death Muffler stops Ender Dragon death sounds within a 32 block radius, and a right click hides the boss bar. The Wither Boss Death Muffler does the same within 8 blocks.[3]
How do you progress through Mob Grinding Utils?
5 parts
Mob Grinding Utils has no formal tiers in this pack. Your progression comes from the pack's quest and from which items feed into which recipes. Here is the path I'd follow, from the basic grinder to spawning and the boss muffler gear.[2][4]
The pack's quest for this mod sits in the resource_generation chapter: "Mob Grinding" quest. Its tasks are the Mob Masher, the Mob Fan and the Entity Conveyor, so those are the core of the setup.[2]
The core grinder
The Mob Masher recipe uses Iron Spikes, so craft those first. The Mob Fan and the Entity Conveyor don't need any other item from this mod.[4]

Upgrades
Once the basic grinder works, upgrades make it stronger. The Masher and the Fan each have their own set, and the Absorption Hopper has a companion upgrade.[4]
- Mob Masher: Mob Masher Upgrade Sharpness, Mob Masher Upgrade Smite, Mob Masher Upgrade Arthropods, Mob Masher Upgrade Fire, Mob Masher Upgrade Looting and Mob Masher Upgrade Beheading.[4]
- Mob Fan: Mob Fan Height Upgrade, Mob Fan Width Upgrade and Mob Fan Distance Upgrade (named Mob Fan Distance Upgrade).[4]
- Collection: the Absorption Hopper and the Absorption Radius Upgrade.[4]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Mob Grinding Utils?
Mob Grinding Utils appears in the "resource_generation" chapter of the pack's quest book. The quest is "Mob Grinding" quest, and it has no title in the quest file.[2]
The quest is made of item tasks, so you work through the mod's core grinding pieces. These are the items it asks for, in the order the quest lists them:[2]
- Mob Masher (Mob Masher)[2]
- Mob Fan (Mob Fan)[2]
- Entity Conveyor (Entity Conveyor)[2]
Which Mob Grinding Utils config options matter?
2 parts
Mob Grinding Utils keeps its settings in the server config, and only two options are shown for this pack. One of them is a value the pack changed from the mod default, so it's worth knowing before you plan your grinder.[5]
Masher upgrade cap
masherMaxUpgrade sets the maximum number of upgrades the masher can take. The pack sets it to 6, down from the mod default of 10. The allowed range is 0 to 10, so the pack lowers the ceiling but doesn't remove upgrades entirely.[5]
Fan blades
fanStrongerBlades is set to false in this pack. When it's true, the fan blades are stronger and the fan is only blocked by more solid blocks. With it off, the fan doesn't get that behavior. The source doesn't mark this as changed from the mod default, so I can't say the pack altered it.[5]
