What is Compact Machines?
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.23.0 guide
Compact Machines is part of the pack's mod list. This pack ships version 7.0.81, the NeoForge build (compactmachines-neoforge-7.0.81.jar).[1]
It isn't a new addition. The mod was already in the pack as of version 1.0.1 or earlier, so it has been around for a long time.[1]
I don't have enough information to describe the mod's items, recipes or mechanics as they work in this pack, so I'm leaving those out rather than guessing. Check back for the sections that cover them once they're confirmed.[1]
How do you get started with Compact Machines?
5 parts
Compact Machines lets you craft a machine, place it in the world, and then step inside it, because each machine is a pocket dimension. You get in by using a Personal Shrinking Device (the PSD) on a placed machine. So the first goal is simple: get a PSD and get a machine.[2]
Step 1: Compact Machine Walls
Start with Compact Machine Wall. It is a plain crafting recipe from the mod, and one craft gives you 8 walls, so you won't need many crafts.[3]
Step 2: The two modules
Next come the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. Both are shaped crafting recipes straight from the mod, and you'll want one of each.[3]

Step 3: The Personal Shrinking Device
The PSD is your key to every machine. This pack changed its recipe, so don't trust a recipe from other versions or modpacks. Check the one below. It takes both modules, which is why you made them first.[3]

Once you hold one, use it on a placed machine to enter the compact space.[2]
Step 4: Your first machine
The machine item is New Machine. The pack adds recipes for it under these ids: tiny, small, normal, large, giant, massive, colossal and farming. The tiny and colossal ones are shown below, and the other sizes follow the same pattern in the pack's recipe list. The colossal recipe is a shaped crafting recipe in which the wall and both modules appear. The others are miniaturization recipes.[3]

Good to know
- The pack keeps recipes.vanillaRecipes set to true, which the config describes as enabling vanilla-style recipes.[4]
- There is a key binding called "Quick-Exit Compact Machine" for leaving a room fast, and another for opening the room upgrade screen.[2]
- The mod has a game rule that can damage shrinking devices when you leave rooms. I can't confirm from the sources whether it is switched on in this pack, so keep an eye on your PSD's durability.[2]
- If you run a server, commands.permLevels.give sets the command level needed to give machines to players. It is 2 here, the same as the mod default.[5]
How does Compact Machines work?
6 parts
Compact Machines lets you craft a machine block, place it in the world and step inside it to reach a pocket dimension. The pack's recipe viewer describes it the same way: craft a machine, place it, then use a Personal Shrinking Device (the PSD) on it to enter.[2]
Getting in and out
The PSD is your key to the compact space. You use it on a placed machine to go inside. Each machine is bound to a room of a particular size at a particular position, and the mod can report that binding as text, for example which size of room a machine at a given spot is bound to.[2]
There are two keybinds in the Compact Machines category: one for a quick exit from the machine you are in, and one that opens the room upgrade screen.[2]
If you have Jade, there are options for showing bound Compact Machines and for showing machine owners.[2]
Staying inside the room
The mod has game rules for players who end up out of bounds. There are separate rules to allow out-of-bounds creative players, spectators and survival players, plus a rule to damage players who are out of bounds. The sources only give descriptions, not the default values, so check them on your own world.[2]
Crafting the pieces
Compact Machine Wall is the basic building material. One craft gives you 8 walls.[3]
The PSD needs both an Atom Shrinking Module and an Atom Enlarging Module as crafted parts. The pack changed the PSD recipe from the mod's version, so go by the one below.[3]

The pack adds its own recipes for New Machine in several sizes: tiny, small, normal, large, giant, massive and colossal, plus a farming variant. Most of these use the miniaturization recipe type, so look them up in the recipe viewer. The colossal machine is the one with a normal crafting-grid recipe.[3]

The common config has recipes.vanillaRecipes set to true, described as enabling vanilla-style recipes.[4]
Room templates and the Spatial Tinkerer
Some room templates generate structures when a room is created, and their tooltip tells you so. The mod also adds a villager profession called the Spatial Tinkerer. The sources don't say what the Tinkerer trades or does.[2]
Admin commands
Four command permission levels are set in the server config. In this pack all four are 2 (OP), the same as the mod default, with a range of 0 to 4 (0 is everyone, 1 admin, 2 OP, 4 owner).[5]
- commands.permLevels.give: level needed to give new machines to players.[5]
- commands.permLevels.rebind: level needed for the rebind and unbind commands. Its description notes that a server restart is required for it to take effect.[5]
- commands.permLevels.spawn: level needed to change room spawn information.[5]
- commands.permLevels.upgrades: level needed to change room upgrades.[5]
Starting PSD for team members
The pack has a script that checks for a Compact Machines block near a team's base spawn when the base is created. If it finds one, the team gets a Compact Machines start stage. After that, a player who joins the team's party and is not the team owner receives one PSD, once only.[6]
How do you progress through Compact Machines?
4 parts
There's no long tech tree to climb here. Progression with Compact Machines in this pack is a crafting chain: walls and modules first, then the Personal Shrinking Device, then the machines themselves, tier by tier. Everything below comes from the in-pack recipes.[3]
Step 1: walls and modules
Everything starts with the Compact Machine Wall. One crafting recipe gives you 8 walls at a time, and it's the mod's own recipe, unchanged by the pack.[3]
Next come the modules: the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. Both are the mod's default recipes, and you need both for the later steps.[3]

Recipe id: compactmachines:enlarging_module
Step 2: the Personal Shrinking Device
The Personal Shrinking Device has a recipe that the pack changed, so don't trust older guides or the mod's defaults. This is the pack's version:[3]

Recipe id: compactmachines:personal_shrinking_device
Step 3: machine tiers
The pack adds its own recipes for every machine tier, and they all produce New Machine. Tiny, small, normal, large, giant and massive are miniaturization recipes added by the pack. Colossal is different: it's a shaped crafting recipe, also added by the pack, and it's the only tier here that asks for a netherite ingot.[3]
- Tiny, small, normal, large, giant and massive: miniaturization recipes added by the pack.[3]
- Colossal: a shaped crafting recipe added by the pack.[3]
- Farming: a separate miniaturization recipe added by the pack.[3]

Shortcut for teammates
The pack has a script that can hand you a Personal Shrinking Device for free. When a team's base is created, the script checks the area around the base spawn for Compact Machines blocks. If it finds any, the team gets a Compact Machines starter stage. Any player who later joins that team's party, and isn't the team owner, receives one device, once.[6]
Which Compact Machines config options matter?
3 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.23.0 guide
Good news: Compact Machines has only a handful of options, and this pack doesn't change any of the ones with a listed mod default. Here is how it sets the ones you're most likely to care about.[7][8][9]
Command permission levels (server config)
These live in the server config and decide who can run the admin commands for machines and rooms. Each accepts a value from 0 to 4, and the pack sets every one of them to 2, which is also the mod default. The config's own description lists the levels as 0 = ALL, 1 = ADMIN, 2 = OP and 4 = OWNER.[8]
- commands.permLevels.give is the command level needed to give new machines to players. Pack value: 2.[8]
- commands.permLevels.rebind is the command level needed for the rebind and unbind commands. Pack value: 2. The file notes that this needs a server restart to take effect.[8]
- commands.permLevels.spawn is the command level needed to change room spawn information. Pack value: 2.[8]
- commands.permLevels.upgrades is the command level needed to change room upgrades. Pack value: 2.[8]
Recipes (common config)
recipes.vanillaRecipes is set to true in this pack. The file describes it as enabling vanilla-style recipes.[7]
Room previews (client config)
enableRoomPreviews is set to true in this pack, so you get a room preview when you open a bound machine's UI. This is a client-side setting, so it only affects your own game.[9]
