What is Compact Machines?
Compact Machines is part of the pack's mod list. This pack ships version 7.0.81, the NeoForge build (compactmachines-neoforge-7.0.81.jar).[1]
It isn't a new addition. The mod was already in the pack as of version 1.0.1 or earlier, so it has been around for a long time.[1]
I don't have enough information to describe the mod's items, recipes or mechanics as they work in this pack, so I'm leaving those out rather than guessing. Check back for the sections that cover them once they're confirmed.[1]
How do you get started with Compact Machines?
5 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
Compact Machines lets you craft a machine block, place it in the world and step inside a pocket dimension. Getting there takes a handful of crafts that build on each other, so the order matters. Here is what to make first and why.[2]
Start with the Compact Machine Wall
Make Compact Machine Wall first. Every machine recipe in the pack uses it, so you need it before you can craft any machine. This one is the mod's own recipe.[3]
Then the two Atom modules
Next come the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. Both go into the Personal Shrinking Device recipe and into every machine recipe, so make them before either of those. Both are the mod's own recipes too.[3]

Craft your Personal Shrinking Device
The Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) is how you get inside. You use it on a placed machine to enter the compact space. The mod also has an advancement for obtaining one.[2]

The recipe uses both Atom modules, which is why they come before it.
Make your first machine
Now you can craft a machine. The pack adds its own machine recipes, and all of them produce New Machine. Each one combines the wall and both Atom modules with one extra material that changes from variant to variant. The recipe ids are tiny, small, normal, large, giant, colossal, farming and soaryn, so check each one and pick a variant you can afford.[3]

How does Compact Machines work?
6 parts
Compact Machines is all about pocket dimensions. You craft a machine, place it in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device on it to step inside. That is the whole loop, and everything else in this section hangs off it.[2]
Machines and rooms
A placed machine is bound to a room of a particular size. The mod's own info message reads "Machine at [position] is bound to a [size] size room at [position]", so you can check which room a machine leads to.[2]
The mod's data has a machine block called New Machine and an older one, Machine. Both are in the machine tag, but only the older one is in the bound machine item tag. When you break a new machine it drops itself and keeps its custom name, colour and room template. The older machine keeps its custom name, colour and room code instead.[4][5][6][7][8][9]
The mod also has its own biome, called Compact Machine. It has no precipitation, a temperature of 0.8, and a spawn list with passive animals, bats, glow squid and several hostile mobs.[2][10]
Getting in and out
The Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) is how you enter a compact space. The mod also adds a keybind called Quick-Exit Compact Machine, and another called Open Room Upgrade Screen. Both are in the Compact Machines keybind category.[2]
The mod has gamerules for what happens when a player ends up out of bounds. They cover whether out-of-bounds creative, spectator and survival players are allowed, and whether out-of-bounds players take damage. Another gamerule controls whether leaving a room damages shrinking devices. The sources only give the descriptions, so the default values are not confirmed here.[2]
Walls
The Compact Machine Wall block is the Compact Machine Wall. There is also a separate Solid Compact Machine Wall block. One of the mod's advancements is to obtain a breakable wall block, and the wall drops itself when broken.[2][11]
This pack adds a special use for the wall. Using flint and steel on it damages the tool by 16 and drops Grains of Infinity.[12]
This is the mod's own recipe, not changed by the pack.
Crafting machines and the shrinking device
The atom modules are the core crafting parts. A machine needs both an Atom Shrinking Module and an Atom Enlarging Module, and so does the PSD. Both module recipes are the mod's own.[13]

In this pack, the machine recipes are added by the pack, with one recipe per size or variant: tiny, small, normal, large, giant, colossal, farming and soaryn. Each one uses both atom modules and a Compact Machine Wall, differs in one extra ingredient, and produces New Machine. The recipe ids tell you the variant, but the sources do not give the room dimensions for each one.[13]

The common config has recipes.vanillaRecipes set to true, which enables the vanilla-style recipes.[14]
Admin commands
The server config sets the command level for the admin commands. In this pack they are all at level 2, which is also the mod default. The scale runs from 0 to 4, where 0 is everyone, 1 is admin, 2 is op and 4 is owner.[15]
- commands.permLevels.give: giving new machines to players.[15]
- commands.permLevels.rebind: the rebind and unbind commands. The file's comment says this needs a server restart to take effect.[15]
- commands.permLevels.spawn: changing room spawn information.[15]
- commands.permLevels.upgrades: changing room upgrades.[15]

How do you progress through Compact Machines?
3 parts
Here's the thing about Compact Machines in this pack: the progression is driven by crafting. The recipes for the New Machine block are added by the pack, one per tier, and they all build on the same set of base parts.[13]
Step 1: the base parts
Every machine recipe builds on the same base parts: the Compact Machine Wall, the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. Their recipes are the mod's own, unchanged by the pack. One wall craft makes 8 walls.[13]

Step 2: the machine tiers
The pack adds eight machine recipes, with these ids: tiny, small, normal, large, giant, colossal, soaryn and farming. Each one uses the wall and both modules, plus one extra material that differs from recipe to recipe. Each recipe makes the same New Machine item, so check the recipe for the tier you want.[13]

The Personal Shrinking Device is also a mod recipe, and it needs both modules. The mod's item tags group it as a shrinking device.[13][16]

Which Compact Machines config options matter?
3 parts
Good news: Compact Machines has only a handful of options, and this pack doesn't change any of the ones with a listed mod default. Here is how it sets the ones you're most likely to care about.[14][15][17]
Command permission levels (server config)
These live in the server config and decide who can run the admin commands for machines and rooms. Each accepts a value from 0 to 4, and the pack sets every one of them to 2, which is also the mod default. The config's own description lists the levels as 0 = ALL, 1 = ADMIN, 2 = OP and 4 = OWNER.[15]
- commands.permLevels.give is the command level needed to give new machines to players. Pack value: 2.[15]
- commands.permLevels.rebind is the command level needed for the rebind and unbind commands. Pack value: 2. The file notes that this needs a server restart to take effect.[15]
- commands.permLevels.spawn is the command level needed to change room spawn information. Pack value: 2.[15]
- commands.permLevels.upgrades is the command level needed to change room upgrades. Pack value: 2.[15]
Recipes (common config)
recipes.vanillaRecipes is set to true in this pack. The file describes it as enabling vanilla-style recipes.[14]
Room previews (client config)
enableRoomPreviews is set to true in this pack, so you get a room preview when you open a bound machine's UI. This is a client-side setting, so it only affects your own game.[17]
