What is Sophisticated Backpacks?
1 part
Sophisticated Backpacks adds wearable storage to the pack, plus a whole set of upgrades you slot into it. The pack ships version 3.24.18, and the mod has been part of the pack since 1.0.1 or earlier.[1]
You start with the plain Backpack. From there you can move up through the Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack, Diamond Backpack and finally the Netherite Backpack.[2]
Where it fits in the progression
The backpack is an early-game item. The first quest in the beginning chapter that involves it just asks you to get a Backpack (a quest in "?"). The general storage chapter then starts with the same task (a quest in "?").[2][3]
Once you have your first backpack, the general storage chapter splits into two branches. One asks you to craft an Upgrade Base (a quest in "?"). The other asks for any of the metal backpack tiers (a quest in "?").[2]
The upgrade base opens up the rest of the chapter. Each of these quests is completed by obtaining any one of the listed items:[2]
- Stack upgrades, from Stack Upgrade Starter Tier up to Stack Upgrade Omega Tier (a quest in "?").[2]
- Utility upgrades: Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade or Anvil Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- Void upgrades: Void Upgrade or Advanced Void Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- Collection upgrades: the pickup and magnet upgrades, including their advanced versions, such as Magnet Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- The Inception Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
If you like to organize your base and carry your gear around, this mod is for you. You can grab a backpack early, then add upgrades as your needs grow.[2]
Unverified The sources do not cover slot counts per backpack tier, how each upgrade behaves, or the in-pack crafting recipes, so none of those are described here.
How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks gives you backpacks that you expand with upgrades. In this pack the quest book walks you through it in a clear order, and this section follows the same path.[2][3]
Make your first Backpack
Start with the Backpack. The quest book asks for it twice: once in the opening chapter (a quest in "?") and again as the first step of the storage chapter (a quest in "?"). Here is the in-pack recipe:[2][3]

Craft an Upgrade Base
Next comes the Upgrade Base. It is the quest that follows the backpack (a quest in "?"), and the recipes for many of the upgrades below start from it.[2][4]

Pick your upgrades
After the Upgrade Base, the quest book opens several branches at once. They all follow the same quest, so you can take them in any order and choose what your current play needs most.[2]
- Pickup and magnet (a quest in "?"): the Pickup Upgrade makes the backpack pick up items, and the Magnet Upgrade magnets items into it at range.[2][5]
- Crafting, stonecutter and anvil (a quest in "?"): the Crafting Upgrade puts a crafting table in an upgrade tab, and the Anvil Upgrade does the same with an anvil.[2][5]
- Stack upgrades (a quest in "?"): these start at the Stack Upgrade Starter Tier and climb through Tier 1 to Tier 4 up to the Stack Upgrade Omega Tier.[2][4]
- Void (a quest in "?"): the Void Upgrade and the Advanced Void Upgrade, which voids items selected in a filter and has more filtering options.[2][5]
- Inception (a quest in "?"): the Inception Upgrade makes it possible to put backpacks into the backpack.[2][5]

Upgrade the backpack itself
The quest book also tracks a better backpack (a quest in "?"). The options are the Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack, Diamond Backpack and Netherite Backpack. Each one is crafted from the previous tier, so you can take them one step at a time as you find materials.[2][4]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?
7 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks has no machines or multiblocks. Everything works through the backpack's slots and its upgrades, so this section covers how tiers, upgrades, fluids and filters behave in this pack. Most values below are the mod's defaults. I'll flag the ones this pack changed.[6]
Backpack tiers
Each tier has a fixed number of storage slots and upgrade slots, and the server config sets both. For example, the Copper Backpack uses server.copperBackpack.inventorySlotCount and server.copperBackpack.upgradeSlotCount. The pack leaves all of them at the mod defaults.[6]
- Leather tier: 27 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot.[6]
- Copper Backpack: 45 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot.[6]
- Iron tier: 54 inventory slots and 2 upgrade slots.[6]
- Gold tier: 81 inventory slots and 3 upgrade slots.[6]
- Diamond Backpack: 108 inventory slots and 5 upgrade slots.[6]
- Netherite Backpack: 120 inventory slots and 7 upgrade slots.[6]
The Copper Backpack is an upgrade of the plain Backpack. The Netherite Backpack is a smithing upgrade of the Diamond Backpack, and the pack changed that recipe.[4]

Upgrade rules
Upgrades go in the backpack's upgrade slots, and each one has an ON/OFF switch in its panel. The game also tells you in chat when you switch one on or off.[5]
The pack limits how many upgrades of some types fit in one backpack. server.maxUpgradesPerStorage is set to 1 each for furnace upgrades, stack upgrades and the jukebox upgrade. Separately, the mod only lets you have one Everlasting, one Inception and one Tool Swapper upgrade in a backpack. The Inception upgrade must go in the top-level backpack, and you can't remove it while there are backpacks inside.[5][6]
Stack upgrades make items stack higher inside the backpack. Bundles and every colour of shulker box are on the non-stackable list in server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems, so they stay unstacked even with a stack upgrade. The top step is Stack Upgrade Omega Tier, crafted from Stack Upgrade Tier 4.[4][6]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:stack_upgrade_omega_tier
With the Inception upgrade, upgrades inside contained backpacks still work, and upgrades can use the inventories of backpacks inside the main one. The pack leaves both options on, via server.inceptionUpgrade.upgradesInContainedBackpacksAreFunctional and server.inceptionUpgrade.upgradesUseInventoriesOfBackpacksInBackpack. The Inception panel also lets you choose whether the main backpack or the contained ones are used first.[5][6]
Filters and inventory interaction
Most upgrades use filter slots, and the config sets how many. The Filter Upgrade has 9 filter slots, shown 3 per row. The advanced filter upgrade has 16, shown 4 per row. Advanced versions of the other upgrades follow the same pattern, with more slots and more options.[5][6]
- Deposit: the advanced version deposits items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak right click. The panel can match the inventory's contents or the backpack's contents.[5]
- Restock and deposit report in chat how many stacks moved, or that nothing could be moved.[5]
- Refill: you pick a target slot, either main hand, off hand, a hotbar slot or any slot, and you scroll to change it.[5]
- Tool Swapper: it can swap tools, swap weapons, or both. You can set it to never swap tools, never swap weapons, or only swap when you already hold another tool.[5]
- Magnet: its range is 3 blocks, and the advanced magnet reaches 5 blocks.[6]
- Void: server.voidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled is true, so it can void anything and not only overflow.[6]
Fluids and energy
The tank upgrade holds 4,000 mB per row of storage slots, and the battery upgrade holds 10,000 FE per row. Transfer per operation starts at 20 and is multiplied by the number of rows and by the stack multiplier. Auto fill and drain of containers in the tank slot moves one bucket, then waits a cooldown of 20.[6]
The Pump Upgrade has 4 fluid filter slots and a base transfer of 20 mB per operation. That rate is also multiplied by rows and stack multiplier. The Advanced Pump Upgrade pumps between the Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. It works with fluid containers in hand and fluid blocks in the world, and it lets you filter which fluids are pumped.[5][6]

server.itemFluidHandlerEnabled is false in this pack. That means the backpack's fluid handler in item form is off. The config notes that filling or draining it as an item in another mod's tank can cause dupe bugs.[6]
Cooking, alchemy and other upgrades
The smelting, blasting and smoking upgrades and their auto versions all run at 1x speed and 1x fuel efficiency, the same as a vanilla furnace. The auto versions have 8 input filter slots and 4 fuel filter slots. You make the Auto-smoking Upgrade from the Auto-smelting Upgrade.[4][6]
Crafting Shaped
| Empty slot | any log | Empty slot |
| any log | any log | |
| Empty slot | any log | Empty slot |
Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:auto_smoking_upgrade_from_auto_smelting_upgrade
The Advanced Alchemy Upgrade automatically uses potions, food with effects or milk buckets, and it adds effect filtering. It has 8 filter slots, against 4 for the Alchemy Upgrade. The Advanced Compacting Upgrade handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes and has 16 filter slots.[5][6]
The XP pump can mend items with Mending. It spends at most 5 experience points per operation, and mending is on in this pack.[6]
Carrying several backpacks
Active upgrades such as magnet, pickup, cooking and feeding work in any backpack in your inventory, because server.nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false. Other players can open the backpack you're wearing by right clicking your back, since server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is true. Each backpack's settings have a switch to block that.[5][6]
Backpacks on mobs
The pack lowered the chance of a mob spawning with a backpack to 0.05, from a default of 0.01. It also lowered the drop chance when a player kills it to 0.05, from a default of 0.5, and set the looting bonus per level to 0. Chest loot is on, but loot inside mob backpacks is off.[6][7]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?
6 parts
Backpack progression in this pack comes in two parts: the backpack itself climbs a ladder of metal tiers, and the upgrades you put inside it have their own tier chains. The quests only nudge you along the way, and the recipes decide how far you can go.[2][4]
The quest path
The first step is crafting a Backpack. The starter chapter has a quest for it, and the storage chapter starts with a quest in "?", which asks for the same item.[2][3]
Two quests unlock once you have the plain backpack. a quest in "?" is for a tiered backpack, and a quest in "?" is for the Upgrade Base, which every upgrade branch hangs off.[2]
- a quest in "?": any stack upgrade, from Starter Tier through Omega Tier.[2]
- a quest in "?": the Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade or Anvil Upgrade.[2]
- a quest in "?": the Void Upgrade or Advanced Void Upgrade.[2]
- a quest in "?": any pickup or magnet upgrade, basic or advanced.[2]
- a quest in "?": the Inception Upgrade.[2]

Converting from Sophisticated Storage
If you already have the matching Sophisticated Storage upgrade, the pack has recipes that turn it into the backpack version. They cover the stack upgrades, pickup, magnet, void, crafting and stonecutter upgrades, and the advanced versions of pickup, magnet and void. The backpack Stack Upgrade Tier 1 is converted from the storage Tier 2 version, so the tier numbers shift by one.[4]
How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?
2 parts
In this pack, Sophisticated Backpacks connects to two other mods through recipes: Chipped and Sophisticated Storage. The quests that involve the backpack only track Sophisticated Backpacks items, so none of them involve another mod.[2][3][4]
Chipped workbench upgrades
Each Chipped workbench has a matching backpack upgrade. The upgrade recipe uses the workbench together with an Upgrade Base. Here are the pairs:[4]
- Alchemy Bench becomes Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade.[4]
- Botanist Workbench becomes Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade.[4]
- Carpenters Table becomes Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade.[4]
- Glassblower becomes Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade.[4]
- Loom Table becomes Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade.[4]
- Mason Table becomes Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade.[4]
- Tinkering Table becomes Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade.[4]
Here is the Alchemy Bench one as an example of the pattern:[4]

Swapping upgrades with Sophisticated Storage
The pack adds recipes that convert upgrades from Sophisticated Storage into their Sophisticated Backpacks versions. If you already have a storage upgrade, you can turn it into the backpack one instead of crafting it from scratch. This covers the Chipped upgrades too.[4]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Sophisticated Backpacks?
3 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
Sophisticated Backpacks shows up in two quest chapters in this pack: a single early quest in "the_beginning" and a full chain in "general_storage". Every quest here is an item-collection task, and none of them have titles in the quest files, so they're identified below by their IDs.[8][9]
The Beginning
Quest a quest in "?" asks you to get a Backpack. It unlocks after another quest in that same chapter is done, so you'll meet it as part of the early progression.[9]
General Storage
This chapter is the main backpack path. You start with the basic backpack and an Upgrade Base, then pick which upgrades you want to chase. Here's the order:[8]
- Quest a quest in "?" is the starting point and asks for a Backpack.[8]
- Quest a quest in "?" unlocks after the first one and asks for an Upgrade Base. This is the gate to all the upgrade quests.[8]
- Quest a quest in "?" also unlocks after the first quest. It accepts one of the higher-tier backpacks: Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack, Diamond Backpack or Netherite Backpack.[8]
Upgrade quests
Once the Upgrade Base quest is done, five upgrade quests open up. They all depend on that same quest, so you can do them in any order:[8]
- Quest a quest in "?" is for stack upgrades. It accepts Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3, Stack Upgrade Tier 4 or Stack Upgrade Omega Tier.[8]
- Quest a quest in "?" is for utility upgrades: Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade or Anvil Upgrade.[8]
- Quest a quest in "?" is for voiding items: Void Upgrade or Advanced Void Upgrade.[8]
- Quest a quest in "?" is for collecting items: Pickup Upgrade, Advanced Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade or Advanced Magnet Upgrade.[8]
- Quest a quest in "?" asks for the Inception Upgrade.[8]
Which Sophisticated Backpacks config options matter?
3 parts
Most of the Sophisticated Backpacks settings in this pack are the mod's defaults. Only four values were changed, and they all affect how you get backpacks and how many you can carry. Here's what to know.[6]
What the pack changed
- server.nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks is 1 in this pack. The mod default is 3. This is the number of backpacks in your inventory that won't slow you down.[6]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.chance is 0.05, up from the mod default of 0.01. This is the chance of a mob spawning wearing a backpack.[6]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance is 0.05, down from the mod default of 0.5. This is the chance of a backpack dropping when a player kills a mob that wears one.[6]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.lootingChanceIncreasePerLevel is 0, down from the mod default of 0.15. Looting therefore adds nothing to the backpack drop chance here.[6]
Backpack tiers (all mod defaults)
The pack doesn't touch the tier sizes. The slot counts below are the mod defaults, set in the inventorySlotCount and upgradeSlotCount options of each tier's section in the server config.[6]
- Leather: 27 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot.[6]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot.[6]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots and 2 upgrade slots.[6]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots and 3 upgrade slots.[6]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots and 5 upgrade slots.[6]
- Netherite: 120 inventory slots and 7 upgrade slots.[6]
Upgrade limits and other settings
server.maxUpgradesPerStorage is set to allow only 1 each of furnace upgrades, stack upgrades and the jukebox upgrade per backpack. Plan your upgrade slots around that.[6]
The magnet upgrade has a range of 3 blocks, and the advanced magnet upgrade reaches 5 blocks. Both match the mod defaults. See server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange and server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange.[6]
server.disallowedItems blocks Personal Barrel and Personal Chest from going into backpacks. server.canBePlacedInContainerItems is false, so backpacks can't go inside container items either.[6]
server.nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false. Active upgrades such as the magnet, pickup, cooking and feeding upgrades aren't limited to the backpack you're wearing.[6]
On multiplayer, server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is true. You can right-click a backpack another player is wearing to open it.[6]
common.chestLootEnabled is true, so backpack loot is added to various vanilla chest loot tables. For mobs wearing backpacks, server.entityBackpackAdditions.addLoot is false, so no extra loot is added to their backpacks.[6][7]
