What is Functional Storage?

2 parts

Functional Storage is part of this pack as version 1.21.1-1.5.0, and it has been included since pack version 1.1.0 or earlier. If you're building a storage setup, this is the mod the pack's "general_storage" quest chapter points you to.[1][2]

That chapter walks you through the mod's main item families. Every quest in it unlocks after another quest from the same chapter, and most of them open straight from the first one, so you can tackle them in whatever order suits your base.[2]

What the quests cover

Where it fits in progression

The linking tool quest is a gateway to two more. a quest in "?" asks for a Storage Controller or Framed Storage Controller, plus a Controller Access Point or Framed Controller Access Point. a quest in "?" asks for the Ender Drawer. Both unlock after the linking tool quest, so treat controllers and ender drawers as the later steps of your storage build.[2]

Unverified The sources don't show Functional Storage on the ATM Star path, and they give no in-pack descriptions of how individual drawers or upgrades behave. Check those in-game before you rely on them.

How do you get started with Functional Storage?

5 parts

Functional Storage is all about drawers, and many of its other items are crafted from one. Here is the order I'd go in, with the reasons. The pack has a general storage quest chapter whose quests ask you to obtain each of these items, so you can use it as a checklist.[2][3]

Start with a basic drawer

Make a plain wooden drawer first. Lots of recipes in this mod ask for any drawer, so one drawer feeds into tools, upgrades and controllers. The Acacia version below is just an example of the wooden drawer pattern: it takes matching planks and a wooden chest.[3]

Get the tools

Next, make the Configuration Tool. The pack changed this recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from other modpacks. It has its own quest, a quest in "?".[2][3]

The Linking Tool is also a recipe the pack changed. It has two modes: one links a single drawer to a controller, and the other links multiple drawers between 2 points. Its quest is a quest in "?".[2][3][4]

Add a controller

Once you have a few drawers and the Linking Tool, build a Storage Controller. In the quest book, a quest in "?" comes right after the Linking Tool quest. It asks for a controller and also a Controller Access Point, which is the Controller Access Point.[2][3][4]

Grow your capacity

The Copper Upgrade starts the storage upgrade line, and the pack changed its recipe. The Gold, Diamond and Netherite upgrades each use the previous tier as an ingredient, and the pack also changed the Netherite upgrade recipe. The quest covering these is a quest in "?".[2][3]

Branch out

After that, pick whatever fits your base. The general storage chapter has quests for all of these:[2]

Tip: The Dripping Upgrade uses a recipe added by the pack, not a mod default. Its quest also accepts the Water Generator Upgrade and the Obsidian Generator Upgrade, and the Obsidian one is crafted from the Dripping and Water Generator upgrades together.[2][3]

How does Functional Storage work?

4 parts

Functional Storage is all about drawers, and the pack gives you a lot of them. Wooden drawers come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts for each wood type, for example Acacia Drawer (1x1), Acacia Drawer (1x2) and Acacia Drawer (2x2). Fluid drawers come in the same three sizes, like Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) and Fluid Drawer (2x2). The pack also has framed, compacting and ender variants, plus the Armory Cabinet.[3]

Linking drawers to a controller

The linking tool has two modes. In single mode it links one drawer to a controller. In multiple mode it links several drawers between two points, which is handy for big walls of drawers.[4]

The Controller Access Point (Controller Access Point) is craftable in the pack. Here is its recipe:[3]

Configuring things in the GUI

Some utility items work by right clicking inside a GUI. One changes direction and another changes the slot. Use them when you want to point a drawer's input or output somewhere specific.[4]

The Configuration Tool is craftable in this pack, and the pack changed its recipe from the mod's version.[3]

Upgrades

Storage upgrade tooltips show that an upgrade can increase a base value, decrease it, or set it to a fixed value. The tooltips only give placeholders, so the exact numbers and which stat they change are not confirmed here. The pack has copper, gold and diamond upgrades, such as Copper Upgrade, Gold Upgrade and Diamond Upgrade. It also has a Collector Upgrade.[3][4]

Unverified The sources don't confirm how much each drawer or upgrade stores, how far a controller reaches, what the Controller Access Point does, how the ender drawer or compacting drawers behave, how hoppers or pipes interact with drawers, or which upgrade generates fluid. The language file only shows a generic fluid-generating tooltip. The pack has no config files for this mod, so don't assume any option values.

How do you progress through Functional Storage?

5 parts

Functional Storage progression in this pack is driven by the general storage quest chapter. It works more like a hub than a ladder. Most of the quests unlock after the same starter quest, so you can pick what you need in almost any order. Only two quests sit one step deeper, behind the Linking Tool quest.[2]

Step 1: Drawers and framed drawers

Start with the wooden drawers. The recipe below is for the Oak Drawer (1x1), and the other wood types follow the same pattern in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 sizes, for example Oak Drawer (1x2) and Oak Drawer (2x2).[3]

Step 2: Storage tiers

The capacity upgrade quest a quest in "?" accepts any of Copper Upgrade, Gold Upgrade, Diamond Upgrade or Netherite Upgrade. The tiers go in that order, and each one is built from the one before it.[2][3]

The pack changes the recipes for the first and last tiers. The Copper Upgrade recipe is changed by the pack, and so is the Netherite Upgrade, which is a smithing recipe. The Gold and Diamond Upgrades use the mod's own recipes.[3]

How does Functional Storage work with other mods?

1 part

Functional Storage has one confirmed cross-mod link in this pack, and it's a good one: the Dripping Upgrade. The pack adds its own shaped crafting recipe for it, and that recipe pulls in ingredients from other mods and from vanilla Minecraft, including ore-bearing deepslate and redstone dust through item tags. That makes it a mid-game upgrade you have to plan for, not something you craft from basic materials.[3]

Recipe id: ftb:dripping_upgrade

Added by the pack. This is the in-pack recipe, so use it instead of any recipe you remember from the mod's defaults.

The recipe uses Grains of Infinity from Ender IO, Lava Lamp from the mcwlights mod, and Pointed Dripstone from vanilla. Ender IO and mcwlights are the only other mod namespaces that show up in this recipe.[3]

What the quests say

The Functional Storage quests sit in the general_storage chapter. Every one I could check asks only for Functional Storage items: drawers, upgrades, tools and controllers. Several of them accept any one item from a group. For example, quest a quest in "?" takes the Dripping Upgrade, the Water Generator Upgrade or the Obsidian Generator Upgrade. None of these quests combines Functional Storage with items from another mod.[2]

Unverified No other recipes or quests linking Functional Storage to other mods were found in the provided pack data. If you spot a link elsewhere, such as in a tag or a recipe I didn't have, treat it as unconfirmed until it's checked.

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Functional Storage?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Everything Functional Storage related in this pack's quest book lives in one chapter, "general_storage". It's a small branching tree: nine quests unlock off the same earlier quest, and two more unlock after the Linking Tool quest. None of the quests have titles in the pack files, so I refer to them by quest ref and by what they ask for.[5]

The first tier: nine quests

These nine all come after the same earlier quest, so you can tackle them in whatever order suits your base. Each one is an item task. Where a task lists several items joined by "or", one of them is enough.[5]

The second tier: after the Linking Tool

Two quests unlock once a quest in "?" is done, so the Linking Tool is the gate to the bigger network pieces.[5]

Tip: Since the first-tier quests don't depend on each other, grab the Linking Tool early. It's the only one of them that opens up further quests, and those lead to the Storage Controller setup and the Ender Drawer.[5]

Unverified The quest files don't include quest titles, descriptions or rewards for these quests, so what you receive for completing them isn't confirmed here.

What changed in Functional Storage between versions?

FTB Skies 2 1.1.1 includes Functional Storage 1.21.1-1.5.0. The mod was already in the pack by 1.1.0 or earlier, so the exact release that first added it isn't pinned down.[1]

The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so there are no pack-level changes to Functional Storage to report.[1]

Unverified The contents of the mod's own 1.21.1-1.5.0 changelog weren't available, so the specific changes between Functional Storage releases are unverified. Check the mod's changelog on its project page if you want the full list.
