Functional Storage is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 1.21.1-1.5.8. Functional Storage is an alternative take on the drawer storage solution, with an updated look and additional functionalities! (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Functional Storage?

2 parts

This pack includes Functional Storage 1.21.1-1.5.8. It was first included in this pack in this version or earlier.[1]

The pack's quest book puts the mod in the "general_storage" chapter. The quests there ask you to obtain its items, so they work as a quick map of what the mod offers: drawers, upgrades, tools and a storage controller.[2]

What the quests point you to

Where it sits in the chapter

Most of these quests unlock after the same earlier quest in the chapter, so you can take them in whatever order suits your base. That includes the drawer, fluid drawer, upgrade and tool quests, and the Linking Tool quest "Linking Drawers" quest.[2]

Two quests come after the Linking Tool quest. "Storage Controllers" quest asks for a Storage Controller (or the framed version) and a Controller Access Point (or the framed version). "Ender Drawers" quest asks for the Ender Drawer.[2]

How do you get started with Functional Storage?

2 parts

Functional Storage is the drawer mod, and drawers come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts. Most of its recipes in this pack are marked as changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the default mod. Check the recipe shown here.[3]

Your first items, in order

  1. Craft a basic wooden drawer, for example the Acacia Drawer (1x1). The 1x2 and 2x2 versions are Acacia Drawer (1x2) and Acacia Drawer (2x2). Do this first, because drawers are the starting point for the tools, upgrades and controllers below. The recipe is shown below.[3]
  2. Make the Configuration Tool. The pack changed its recipe, and it has its own quest, "Configuring Drawers" quest.[2][3]
  3. Make the Linking Tool. It has two modes: one links a drawer to a controller, the other links multiple drawers between 2 points. Its quest is "Linking Drawers" quest, and the controller quest and the Ender Drawer quest come after it.[2][3][4]
  4. Build a Storage Controller and a Controller Access Point (the Controller Access Point). Both are covered by quest "Storage Controllers" quest, and the framed versions count too.[2][3]
  5. Start your storage upgrades with the Copper Upgrade (recipe below). The upgrade tiers continue with Gold Upgrade and Diamond Upgrade, then Netherite Upgrade, which is a smithing recipe. The quest is "Storage Size Upgrades" quest.[2][3]

Once the basics are running

The quest book offers these next steps after the same earlier quest as the tools, so you can pick them in whatever order suits your base. The Ender Drawer is the exception, since its quest comes after the Linking Tool quest.[2]

Watch out: The Dripping Upgrade has a custom recipe added by the pack, not by the mod. Check it before you plan an Obsidian Generator Upgrade.[3]

How does Functional Storage work?

5 parts

Functional Storage is all about drawers, and the sources for this pack only explain part of how they work. I'll stick to what's confirmed so you don't get surprised in your base.[3][4]

Drawer types

Drawers come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts. Wooden variants such as Acacia Drawer (1x1), Birch Drawer (1x2) and Cherry Drawer (2x2) exist across those layouts, along with framed versions like Framed Drawer (1x1). The recipes for these are marked as changed by the pack, so don't rely on the mod's default recipes from other modpacks.[3]

Beyond the plain item drawers, the pack recipes show a few special ones: the Compacting Drawer, its framed twin Framed Compacting Drawer, and the Ender Drawer.[3]

Fluid drawers

Fluid drawers like Fluid Drawer (1x1) also come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts. In their GUI, the mod shows two hints: one for emptying a container into the drawer and one for filling a container from the drawer. So you can move fluids in and out with containers by hand.[3][4]

Upgrades

Storage upgrades change a drawer's base values. According to the mod's tooltips, an upgrade can increase a base value, decrease it, or set it to a fixed value. The pack has Copper Upgrade, Gold Upgrade and Diamond Upgrade.[3][4]

The pack changed this recipe, so check it here rather than relying on the mod default.

There's also a Collector Upgrade with its own pack recipe. Some upgrades can generate fluid, with a tooltip showing an amount in mb and the fluid type. The sources don't give the actual values for any of these.[3][4]

Linking and controllers

The mod's linking tool has two modes. Single mode links a drawer to a controller. Multiple mode links multiple drawers between 2 points, which saves you a lot of clicking when you have a big wall of drawers.[4]

The pack also includes the Controller Access Point, called the Controller Access Point. Here's its recipe.[3]

The Configuration Tool has its own recipe in the pack. Separately, some of the mod's utility items are adjusted from inside a GUI: right click to change direction, or right click to change slot.[3][4]

How do you progress through Functional Storage?

4 parts

Functional Storage progression in this pack is laid out in the general storage quest chapter. Every quest there is an item task: you hand in one of the listed items. Most of them follow the same earlier quest, so you can pick your own order. The Linking Tool quest is the only one other quests lead on from.[2]

Drawers

The pack changed the wooden drawer recipes. Every wood type comes in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 sizes, and each recipe is built around a wooden chest. The plain Oak Drawer (1x1) is the simplest one.[3]

The framed drawer quest "Framed Drawers" quest accepts a Framed Drawer in the 1x1, 1x2 or 2x2 size, a framed compacting drawer or a framed simple compacting drawer. The framed drawer recipes were also changed by the pack.[2][3]

Capacity tiers

The upgrade quest "Storage Size Upgrades" quest is completed by any one of the copper, gold, diamond or netherite upgrades. The pack changed the recipes for the copper, gold and diamond versions. The gold upgrade is crafted from the copper one, and the diamond upgrade from the gold one.[2][3]

Specialty drawers and upgrades

The Dripping Upgrade recipe is added by the pack, and the Water Generator Upgrade recipe is changed by it. The Obsidian Generator Upgrade is a shapeless recipe from the mod that combines those two upgrades.[3]

Tools, controllers and the Ender Drawer

The Configuration Tool and Linking Tool each have their own quest ("Configuring Drawers" quest and "Linking Drawers" quest), and the pack changed both recipes. The Linking Tool quest leads on to the last two quests in the chapter.[2][3]

How does Functional Storage work with other mods?

1 part

Functional Storage connects to other mods in only one place that the pack's recipes and quests confirm: the Dripping Upgrade. The pack adds this recipe itself with a script.[3]

Dripping UpgradeAdded by the pack

Shaped (kubejs)

Recipe id: ftb:dripping_upgrade

This recipe is added by the pack, so follow this one rather than any default you remember.

What makes this recipe a crossover is that it uses Grains of Infinity and the Lava Lamp alongside a vanilla Pointed Dripstone. Plan ahead for those items before you try to make the upgrade.[3]

Quests

The Dripping Upgrade is one of three options for quest "Drawer Generators" quest in the general storage chapter. The other two are the Water Generator Upgrade and the Obsidian Generator Upgrade.[2]

Every other quest in that chapter only asks for Functional Storage items, such as drawers, tools, upgrades and controllers. None of them link the mod to another one.[2]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Functional Storage?

2 parts

Everything Functional Storage related in this pack's quest book lives in one chapter, "general_storage". It's a small branching tree: nine quests unlock off the same earlier quest, and two more unlock after the Linking Tool quest. None of the quests have titles in the pack files, so I refer to them by quest ref and by what they ask for.[2]

The first tier: nine quests

These nine all come after the same earlier quest, so you can tackle them in whatever order suits your base. Each one is an item task. Where a task lists several items joined by "or", one of them is enough.[2]

The second tier: after the Linking Tool

Two quests unlock once "Linking Drawers" quest is done, so the Linking Tool is the gate to the bigger network pieces.[2]

Tip: Since the first-tier quests don't depend on each other, grab the Linking Tool early. It's the only one of them that opens up further quests, and those lead to the Storage Controller setup and the Ender Drawer.[2]

Unverified The quest files don't include quest titles, descriptions or rewards for these quests, so what you receive for completing them isn't confirmed here.

What changed in Functional Storage between versions?

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Functional Storage 1.21.1-1.5.8. The mod was already in the pack by FTB Skies 2 1.1.0 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack for a long time.[1]

Unverified The pack changelogs have no entries for Functional Storage, and the contents of the mod's own changelog (including the 1.21.1-1.5.0 release) weren't available to this guide. What changed between 1.5.0 and the 1.5.8 build in the pack is unverified, so check the mod's changelog before relying on a specific change.
