What is Item Filters?

1 part

Item Filters is a mod you will meet through the quest book rather than through a crafting table. It is part of this pack, and it has been included since Gravitas 2.0 or earlier.[1]

The only item from this mod that the sources show in the pack is the Tag Filter. It turns up as a task item in many quests, so you will see it long before you think about the mod itself.[2][3][4][5]

Where the quest book places it

You hit it right at the start. The opening chapter, Getting Started (Featuring Stone Anvils!), uses the Tag Filter in "{gravitas.quest.caveman.stick}" quest and "{gravitas.quest.caveman.stone_tools}" quest. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.start_somewhere}" quest comes after the stone tools quest and asks for 8 of them alongside 10 Straw.[2]

It stays in that same chapter further on, in "Pit Kilns" quest, then "Finding Copper" quest, and in "{gravitas.quest.caveman.saw_blade}" quest. The chain that runs from "{gravitas.quest.caveman.raw_hide}" quest through "{gravitas.quest.caveman.soak}" quest, "{gravitas.quest.caveman.squeegee}" quest and "{gravitas.quest.caveman.soak_2}" quest to "{gravitas.quest.caveman.leather}" quest uses it as well.[2]

Later chapters keep using it. "{gravitas.quest.bronze.zinc_alloy}" quest pairs it with Zinc Ingot and Igneous Zinc Alloy, and "{gravitas.quest.bronze.hangers}" quest and "{gravitas.quest.bronze.food_shelf}" quest both come after the cellar quest and use it too. "{gravitas.quest.steel.funnel}" quest pairs it with Brass Funnel and comes after the automate Create quest. One quest that asks for a Bloomery also wants 11 of them.[3][4][5]

Unverified Whether Item Filters is used on the ATM Star quest path is not shown by the sources here. The quests above are from this pack's own Gravitas quest chapters.

How do you get started with Item Filters?

4 parts

Item Filters adds a family of filter items. Each one describes a set of items instead of a single item. You will meet them early, because the Getting Started quest chapter uses Tag Filter for many of its tasks.[2][6][7]

Step 1: Make your first filter

Always True Filter is the one filter with a standalone recipe that does not ask for another filter. The recipes for the other filters in the dump all take a filter you already own, so this is the natural place to start in a fresh world.[6]

There is also a second, shapeless Always True recipe that works from other filters. It is handy for turning a filter you no longer need back into this one.[6]

Step 2: Get the Tag Filter

The Tag Filter matches items by tag name, with examples like 'minecraft:wool' or 'forge:cobblestone'. In the pack, the early quests "{gravitas.quest.caveman.stick}" quest, "{gravitas.quest.caveman.stone_tools}" quest and "{gravitas.quest.caveman.start_somewhere}" quest all list Tag Filter entries as their tasks. The stone tools quest comes after the stick quest, and "{gravitas.quest.caveman.start_somewhere}" quest comes after the stone tools quest. When a task shows a filter, it is describing a group of items rather than one exact item.[2][7]

Step 3: Pick the filter that fits the job

Each filter has its own matching rule, and the item tooltips explain them. Here are the simple ones you will likely reach for first:[7]

Step 4: Combine filters

Once you have several filters, the logic filters let you stack them. AND Filter needs all of its filters to match, and OR Filter needs one of them to match. XOR Filter needs one of two to match, but not both.[6][7]

Tip: To clear a filter slot in the filter screen, right-click it. Also note that Custom Filter needs a mod or a script, usually KubeJS, to make it work.[6][7]

How does Item Filters work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 guide

Item Filters adds filter items, each of which describes a set of items by a rule. The sources for this pack cover what each filter checks and how you type its rule in, so that is what this section explains.[7][8]

Logic filters

These combine other filters, which lets you build more precise rules.[7]

Filters that check an item's properties

  • Block Filter checks whether the item is a block.[7][8]
  • Tag Filter matches by tag name, such as 'minecraft:wool' or 'forge:cobblestone'.[7][8]
  • Item Group Filter matches by Item Group, also called Creative Tab, ID.[7][8]
  • ID RegEx Filter checks the item ID with a regular expression. The text you enter is matched against the item ID, so "^minecraft:" matches all vanilla items.[7][8]
  • Max Count Filter checks the item's maximum stack size. You can use relational operators, for example "<64" or ">=16".[7][8]
  • Damage Filter checks item damage. It accepts relational operators such as "<10" or ">=5", and you can also use a percentage, for example ">50%".[7][8]

NBT matching

The mod also has two NBT-based filters. The strong one matches only if the entire NBT is equal. The weak one matches if only the specified part of the NBT is present: it checks only the fields you supply and ignores any other fields on the item.[7]

Both take an NBT string, written like { text:"hello", value: 1, active: true }.[7]

Using the filter screens

  • A filter slot is cleared with a right-click.[7]
  • In the selection list, Tab, the scroll wheel and Cursor Up/Down adjust the highlight, and Enter selects the highlighted entry.[7]

Crafting

The Item Filters recipes in the pack's recipe dump are all listed as the mod's own recipes. Most of them take another filter as an ingredient. Here are the recipes for an Always True Filter.[8]

How do you progress through Item Filters?

2 parts

Item Filters doesn't have tiers of its own in this pack. The recipe dump lists every filter as an ordinary crafting recipe, and nothing in it shows a quest or stage lock. What you will see as you progress is the Tag Filter showing up as a quest task, all the way from the first stone tools to steel.[2][6]

Early game: the caveman chapter

The opening chapter leans on Tag Filter tasks the most. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.stick}" quest and an untitled quest (a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)") both ask for two of them. Both lead into "{gravitas.quest.caveman.stone_tools}" quest, which has four Tag Filter tasks, and then into "{gravitas.quest.caveman.start_somewhere}" quest, which asks for eight plus ten Straw.[2]

After that the chapter splits into a few chains. "Pit Kilns" quest leads to "Finding Copper" quest. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.saw_blade}" quest opens "{gravitas.quest.caveman.big_barrel}" quest (four Tag Filter tasks) and the untitled a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)". The big barrel quest then leads on through this hide-processing line:[2]

  1. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.raw_hide}" quest[2]
  2. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.soak}" quest[2]
  3. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.squeegee}" quest[2]
  4. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.soak_2}" quest[2]
  5. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.leather}" quest, which asks for three Tag Filter tasks[2]

A separate branch goes from "{gravitas.quest.caveman.loom}" quest, which pairs a Tag Filter task with Wool Cloth, to "{gravitas.quest.caveman.small_ship}" quest.[2]

Bronze, iron and steel chapters

Since you need Tag Filters from the very first quests, it's worth knowing how to make them. Here is the in-pack recipe:[6]

6× Tag FilterMod recipe

Crafting Shaped

6 × any filter

Recipe id: itemfilters:tag

The other filters (AND Filter, OR Filter, NOT Filter, XOR Filter, Mod Filter, Block Filter and so on) are all craftable too. The Always True Filter has a direct recipe and a conversion from other filters, both shown below.[6]

Which All the Mods - Gravitas quests use Item Filters?

4 parts

In this pack, Tag Filter shows up as a quest task in four quest chapters. Those quests ask you to hand in items that match the filter.[2][3][4][5]

Getting Started (Featuring Stone Anvils!)

This chapter has by far the most Tag Filter quests. They are listed here roughly in the order the quest links unlock them.[2]

  1. a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)" and "{gravitas.quest.caveman.stick}" quest come first. Each asks for 2 Tag Filter items and unlocks after the same earlier quest.[2]
  2. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.stone_tools}" quest needs both of those done. It has four separate Tag Filter tasks.[2]
  3. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.start_somewhere}" quest comes next. It wants 8 Tag Filter items plus 10 Straw.[2]
  4. Pit Kilns ("Pit Kilns" quest) has two Tag Filter tasks and opens only after several earlier quests are done. Finding Copper ("Finding Copper" quest) follows it with one more.[2]
  5. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.saw_blade}" quest has two Tag Filter tasks and comes after the quest called Making Our First Metal Tools.[2]

Two quests branch off the saw blade quest. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.big_barrel}" quest asks for 4 Tag Filter items, and the untitled quest a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)" asks for one.[2]

From the big barrel quest, a hide-processing line runs in a straight chain: "{gravitas.quest.caveman.raw_hide}" quest, then "{gravitas.quest.caveman.soak}" quest, then "{gravitas.quest.caveman.squeegee}" quest, then "{gravitas.quest.caveman.soak_2}" quest, and finally "{gravitas.quest.caveman.leather}" quest. Each of the first four has a single Tag Filter task. The leather quest asks for 3.[2]

There is also a textile branch. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.loom}" quest asks for one Tag Filter item plus Wool Cloth, and "{gravitas.quest.caveman.small_ship}" quest follows it with one more Tag Filter task.[2]

Chapter 3

"{gravitas.quest.bronze.zinc_alloy}" quest asks for a Tag Filter item along with Zinc Ingot and Igneous Zinc Alloy. The untitled quest a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.3.title}" is a single Tag Filter task with no listed prerequisite.[3]

"{gravitas.quest.bronze.greenhouse}" quest is one Tag Filter task. "{gravitas.quest.bronze.hangers}" quest and "{gravitas.quest.bronze.food_shelf}" quest each need one too, and both unlock after the same earlier quest. The untitled quest a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.3.title}" also asks for one Tag Filter item and needs three earlier quests done.[3]

Chapter 4

The untitled quest a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.4.title}" asks for a Bloomery plus 11 Tag Filter items. It unlocks after two earlier quests in the same chapter.[5]

Chapter 5

"{gravitas.quest.steel.kelp}" quest is one Tag Filter task with no listed prerequisite. "{gravitas.quest.steel.funnel}" quest asks for a Tag Filter item plus Brass Funnel and unlocks after an earlier quest in the chapter.[4]
