What is Terralith?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mons 1.3.0 guide

Terralith is a world generation mod. It takes Minecraft's 1.18 terrain overhaul and pushes it much further, adding over 95 brand new biomes and updating almost every vanilla biome. You also get new terrain types like canyons, shattered biomes, floating islands and deep ocean trenches. It does all this using just vanilla blocks.[1]

If you love exploring, building on interesting landscapes, or just want a world that looks great, this one is for you. The pack ships Terralith 2.6.2, so everything below about the mod version of 2.6.0 and later applies here.[1][2]

What you will find

  • Realistic biomes, such as Yellowstone, Yosemite Cliffs, Shield, Volcanic Peaks and Desert Oases, plus flat Highlands that are great for building.[1]
  • Fantasy biomes, such as Moonlight Grove, Amethyst Rainforest, Scarlet Mountains, Mirage Isles and Alpha Islands.[1]
  • Custom caves, including Underground Jungle, Infested Caves, Fungal Caves and the dangerous Frostfire Caves, which you only reach by digging very deep.[1]
  • Structures like the tall Spire in the iciest biomes, rare Fortified Villages in plains and desert, and the Glacial Hut.[1]

Config

Since 2.6.0 the mod version has a config file called terralith.json, which you can also edit in game through the mod menu. It has toggles for Custom Structures, Fog Tweaks, Intro Message, Skylands, Terrain Slabs, Vanilla Stone Generation and Recipe Changes. The mod defaults are everything on except Vanilla Stone Generation and Recipe Changes. I can't confirm from the sources whether the pack changes any of these values.[1]

The mod also adds two world types: Amplified + Large Biomes and Oops! All Skylands, a void world filled only with Skylands.[1]

Watch out: You cannot remove Terralith from an existing world. Adding it to an existing world is not recommended either, so reset your world or start a new one.[1]

Unverified Where Terralith fits in the pack's progression is not confirmed by the sources. There is no in-jar guidebook to check, and nothing here ties the mod to quests or to the ATM Star path.

How do you get started with Terralith?

2 parts

Terralith is a world generation mod, so there's no first tool or crafting chain to rush. Your first steps are about where you play and what you go looking for. It adds over 95 brand new biomes and updates almost every vanilla biome, all using vanilla blocks.[1]

Your first steps, in order

  1. Start in a fresh world. Terralith can't be removed from an existing world, and adding it to one is not recommended. Reset or make a new world instead.[1]
  2. Watch for the toast when the world is created. It's an optional intro message that gives a Discord link and warns about problems when uninstalling the mod.[3]
  3. Look around the surface before you dig in. The terrain is overhauled, with new types such as canyons, shattered biomes, floating islands and deep ocean trenches.[1]
  4. Scout for structures to loot and explore. Fortified Villages show up rarely in plains and desert, Spires pierce the sky in the iciest biomes, and Glacial Huts can shelter you if you get caught out cold and hungry at night.[1]
  5. Take your time before going deep. Custom caves like the Underground Jungle, Infested Caves and Fungal Caves sit beneath the surface, and the dangerous Frostfire Caves are found if you dig very deep.[1]
Watch out: You can't take Terralith out of a world once it's in. Treat any world you make in this pack as permanent.[1]

Things you might notice early

  • Stone slabs can generate on the surface in biomes with surface stone, smoothing out the terrain.[3]
  • Fog distance and color change in some biomes, such as swamps and caves.[3]
  • Skylands are a set of four season-themed biomes that generate as sky islands above deep oceans.[3]
  • Custom structures, such as Fortified Villages and Mage Towers, can spawn.[3]
  • The mod has a recipe option that lets some items normally crafted with cobblestone use alternate stones, and adds a recipe for turning stone slabs back into cobblestone.[3]
Tip: Terralith's biomes and structures can be viewed per seed with the Minecraft Datapack Map made by jacobsjo, which is handy for planning where to explore.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm which of Terralith's options are enabled or changed in this pack, including the cobblestone recipe changes. The pack has no quests or crafting recipes for this mod, so there are no recipe steps to follow here.

How does Terralith work?

2 parts

Here's the honest part up front: Terralith is a world generation mod, not a tech mod. It reworks terrain, biomes and structures using just Vanilla blocks, so there are no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation to learn here.[1]

What works like a "system" is the mod's list of options. They are toggles that decide what generates in your world.[1][3]

Option toggles

Since version 2.6.0, the mod version of Terralith has a config file called terralith.json, which you can also edit in game through the mod menu. The defaults below are the mod's own defaults, not confirmed values for this pack.[1]

  • Custom Structures (mod default: on) spawns custom structures, such as Fortified Villages and Mage Towers.[1][3]
  • Fog Tweaks (mod default: on) changes fog distance and color in some biomes, such as swamps and caves.[1][3]
  • Intro Message (mod default: on) shows a toast when you create a new world. It gives a Discord link and warns about difficulties when trying to uninstall.[1][3]
  • Skylands (mod default: on) is a set of four season-themed biomes that generate as sky islands above deep oceans. Turning it off stops them from generating.[1][3]
  • Terrain Slabs (mod default: on) makes stone slabs generate in biomes with surface stone, to smooth the terrain. Turning it off stops them from generating.[1][3]
  • Vanilla Stone Generation (mod default: off) follows Vanilla behavior and generates small blobs of granite, andesite and diorite underground. Terralith replaces this with dedicated cave biomes for each stone type.[1][3]
  • Recipe Changes (mod default: off) allows some items crafted with cobblestone to be crafted with alternate stones. It also adds a recipe for converting stone slabs to cobblestone.[1][3]

Unverified Whether this pack ships a Terralith config file, and whether it changes any of the option values above, is not shown by the sources here. Check the in-game mod menu for the values actually in use.

Things to know before you load a world

Watch out: You cannot remove Terralith from an existing world. Adding it to an existing world is not recommended either, so reset your world or start a new one.[1]

From 2.6.0, the mod version of Terralith needs Lithostitched as a required dependency. It also differs from the datapack version, and swapping between the two can potentially damage your world.[1]

Terralith is compatible with most biome-adding mods when they use Terrablender or an equivalent. Biome-adding datapacks are typically not compatible. It is also fully compatible with the mod version of Tectonic.[1]

What changed in Terralith between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta ships Terralith 2.6.1, using the NeoForge build for 26.1. Terralith has been in the pack since All the Mods 11 0.0.7 or earlier, so it's one of the long-standing worldgen mods here.[4]

Terralith 2.6.1

This is the version you get in 0.8.0-beta. Here's what the mod's own changelog lists for it:[4][5]

  • Updated to support 26.1.[5]
  • Golden Dandelion can now generate on Autumn Skylands.[5]
  • Fixed snow layers not generating under trees in some snowy biomes.[5]
  • More biomes will have their flowers appear when you bonemeal the ground.[5]
  • World height in the "Amplified + Large Biomes" world preset is increased by 64 blocks.[5]

Unverified I have no pack changelog entries for Terralith, so I can't say which pack releases changed it or what version earlier releases used.
