Ars Magica: Legacy is a mod in All the Mods 11 0.12.0-beta, where it is version 1.7.0. A legacy version of Mithion's Ars Magica 2, this mod features an exciting way of creating and casting spells. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Ars Magica: Legacy?

3 parts

Ars Magica: Legacy is a port of Mithion's Ars Magica 2 for 1.18.1 and newer. Its big idea is building your own spells and using them to buff yourself, replace tools, fight mobs and more. This pack ships version 1.7.0. The project page warns that the mod is still in development, so many features are not yet implemented and some may not work yet.[1][2]

What you get

  • The project page lists a spellcrafting system where you assemble your own spell from over 100 unique spell parts, though it says many features are not yet implemented.[1]
  • It also lists Magic XP that grows as you cast, so a higher level lets you perform more powerful spells (again, with the page's caveat that not every feature is in yet).[1]
  • The feature list includes a unique and balanced Mana and Burnout mechanic, as far as the page says it is implemented so far.[1]
  • 10 affinities you can shift into, each giving buffs and debuffs depending on how deep your shift is.[1]
  • The project page lists 10 bosses, one for each affinity, with the same not-yet-fully-implemented caveat. The in-game guide gives recommended magic levels, for example 20 for the Earth Guardian and 100 for the Ender Guardian.[1][3][4]
  • The project page also lists in-game documentation through Patchouli, plus datapack customisation of things like unlock costs and mana costs of spell parts, with the same caveat that some features are not yet implemented.[1]

Getting started

The project page says that on 1.19 and above you will rarely find puddles of Liquid Essence in plains and plains-like biomes. Craft an Arcane Compendium from a book and a Liquid Essence Bucket, and it will guide you through the mod. Keep in mind the page's warning that some features are not yet implemented.[1]

The compendium's getting started pages mention the Occulus, which has five tabs, the first four of them skill tree tabs. They also recommend a Projectile-Dig spell recipe for beginners.[5]

Quest book placement

Unverified The sources here do not show any quest chapter, group or ATM Star path entry for this mod, so there is nothing to say about what comes before or after it. Check the pack's quest book in game.

How do you get started with Ars Magica: Legacy?

5 parts

Welcome to Ars Magica: Legacy, the spellcrafting mod. You build your own spells from spell parts, and your magic level grows as you cast. The mod is still in active development, so some features are not finished yet. Here is the order I would tackle things in.[1]

First, open the Arcane Compendium

The mod's own guide is the Arcane Compendium. Its getting started chapter covers the Occulus, which has five tabs, the first four of which are skill tree tabs. Read this before you spend anything.[5]

Next, find and smelt your first magic materials

Vinteum Dust is the one to chase first, because the guide describes it as found relatively commonly in most layers of the world. Topaz turns up in the deepest depths or on the highest peaks and is called an entry level magical crystal. Chimerite is found where the stones shift. Moonstone is rare, found in meteorites, so leave it for later.[6]

These ores can be smelted or blasted into their materials, and the deepslate versions have their own recipes too. Here are the in-pack smelting recipes for the first two.[7]

Good to know for later: the guide says Cerublossom and Desert Nova flowers are used in the purification process for Vinteum Dust.[8]

      Then, craft the Inscription Table

The pack has a shaped recipe for the Inscription Table, shown below. It also has tier 1, 2 and 3 shapeless recipes that make the same table, plus matching upgrade items such as Inscription Table Upgrade Tier 1.[7]

Finally, build a simple first spell

In the guide's spell-building steps, you drag skills down to the shape groups and the spell grammar section. The name bar is optional. The example spell it shows is Projectile-Dig, which it recommends for beginners, so start there.[5]

      A pack change: Witchwood Planks

This pack adds its own way to get Witchwood Planks: a sawmill recipe from Productive Trees. It takes 2 Sawdust and makes 6 planks.[7]

How does Ars Magica: Legacy work?

      4 parts

Ars Magica: Legacy is a spellcrafting mod first. You build spells from over 100 spell parts, and a Mana and Burnout system limits how much you can cast. It is not a machine-and-pipes mod. The sources I have cover its data files and settings well, but the in-game guide pages for the altar, obelisk and prism came through as empty keys. So this section covers what is confirmed and skips the rest.[1]

      Obelisk fuel and etherium

The mod ships a data map of obelisk fuels. Each entry sets a burn time and an etherium_per_tick rate. These are the three fuels it lists:[9]

      • Any vinteum dust: burn time 200, 1 etherium per tick.[9]
      • Any vinteum storage block: burn time 900, 2 etherium per tick.[9]
      • A Liquid Etherium bucket: burn time 1,000, 2 etherium per tick.[9]

Nothing I was given shows the pack changing these values.[9]

Getting fuel is easy. Vinteum Ore generates across the Overworld in veins of size 10, with stone and deepslate versions. The compendium calls Vinteum Dust relatively common in most layers of the world. Mana creepers drop Vinteum Dust instead of gunpowder.[6][10][11][12]

Liquid Etherium also generates as lakes in Overworld plains biomes, ringed by a stone barrier. So you can find the bucket fuel in the wild.[13][14]

      Altar and compendium timing

The mod's language file describes some timing settings. One sets the time in ticks between multiblock checks for the crafting altar. Another group controls the Arcane Compendium conversion: a check interval (set it to 0 to disable the conversion entirely), a duration in ticks, and a horizontal and a vertical range.[15]

Unverified The actual values of the altar check interval and the Arcane Compendium conversion settings are set in the mod's config. The sources here include no config file for this mod, so they do not show them.

      Casting and affinities

Spells are built in the Occulus, which has five tabs. The first four are skill tree tabs. In the spell crafting screen you can name your recipe, but you don't have to. You drag skills down into the shape groups and the spell grammar section. The guide's example is Projectile-Dig, which it recommends for beginners.[5]

Affinities add a second layer. Casting shifts you toward an affinity, and abilities scale with how deep you go, with ranges like 1 to 100 percent. Some drawbacks only start at 50 percent. The Affinity Tome lets you break out of an affinity lock. Its settings control how much it adds to one affinity and how much it subtracts from the others.[15]

Tip: Magic level matters for the bosses. The compendium recommends level 10 for the Water Guardian and level 100 for the Ender Guardian.[4][16]

How do you progress through Ars Magica: Legacy?

      5 parts

This pack's quest book has nothing to say about Ars Magica: Legacy, so there is no quest ladder to follow here. Instead, this section follows the materials, the in-pack recipes and the recommended magic levels from the mod's own in-game guide. For the mod itself, see Ars Magica: Legacy.[6][7]

      Tier 1: gems and dusts

Your first job is to gather the mod's raw materials. The in-game guide describes where each one turns up:[6]

      • Topaz is found in the deepest depths or on the highest peaks, and the guide calls it an entry level magical crystal.[6]
      • Vinteum Dust is relatively common in most layers of the world.[6]
      • Chimerite is found where the stones shift.[6]
      • Moonstone is rare. It comes from meteorites that crashed into the world long ago.[6]
      • Sunstone forms in patches of obsidian touching the Nether's lava oceans. It is not fire-resistant, so the guide warns you to take great care when collecting it.[6]

Chimerite, moonstone, topaz and vinteum dust can all be smelted or blasted from their ores, including the deepslate versions. Mining Chimerite or Moonstone ore normally drops the gem and Fortune applies. Silk Touch gives you the ore block instead.[7][17][18][19]

Each gem also has a recipe that turns 9 of them into a block, and a recipe that turns the block back into 9 gems. For example, the Chimerite, Moonstone, Topaz and Sunstone blocks all work this way.[7]

      Purified Vinteum Dust

The guide says Desert Nova is one of the two plants used to purify Vinteum Dust, and that Cerublossom can be used as part of the same process. Purified Vinteum Dust has a shapeless crafting recipe.[7][8]

      Crafting Shapeless

      • any arcane ash dust

      • Desert Nova
      • any vinteum dust

Tier 2: the Inscription Table and its upgrades

The Inscription Table has its own crafting recipe. The recipe list also has three more shapeless recipes that output an Inscription Table, named tier 1, tier 2 and tier 3. There are also three upgrade items: Inscription Table Upgrade Tier 1, Inscription Table Upgrade Tier 2 and Inscription Table Upgrade Tier 3.[7]

      Affinities, gear and Witchwood

There are ten Affinity Essence recipes, one each for air, arcane, earth, ender, fire, ice, life, lightning, nature and water. Every one makes 2 essences.[7]

Gear comes in two sets, each with its own recipes: Mage armor (Mage Helmet, Mage Chestplate, Mage Leggings, Mage Boots) and Battlemage armor (Battlemage Helmet, Battlemage Chestplate, Battlemage Leggings, Battlemage Boots).[7]

The base Witchwood Planks recipe makes 4 planks. This pack also adds a Productive Trees sawmill recipe for Witchwood Planks that makes 6 planks per sawing.[7]

      The guardian ladder

The in-game guide gives every guardian boss a recommended magic level. They climb in steps of 10, which gives you a natural order to tackle them in:[3][4][16][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]

      1. Water Guardian: recommended magic level 10.[16]
      2. Earth Guardian: recommended magic level 20.[3]
      3. Air Guardian: recommended magic level 30.[20]
      4. Arcane Guardian: recommended magic level 40.[21]
      5. Life Guardian: recommended magic level 50.[22]
      6. Ice Guardian: recommended magic level 60.[23]
      7. Nature Guardian: recommended magic level 70.[24]
      8. Lightning Guardian: recommended magic level 80.[25]
      9. Fire Guardian: recommended magic level 90.[26]
      10. Ender Guardian: recommended magic level 100.[4]
Tip: Treat those levels as the guide's recommendations, not hard locks. Start with the Water Guardian at level 10 and work your way up the list.[4][16]

How does Ars Magica: Legacy work with other mods?

The only cross-mod link the sources show for Ars Magica: Legacy is with Productive Trees. The pack adds a Productive Trees sawmill recipe that turns Sawdust into Witchwood Planks. Witchwood is the tree this mod adds, so you can get its planks from sawdust instead of crafting them from logs.[7]

6× Witchwood PlanksAdded by the pack

      Sawmill (productivetrees)

      Recipe id: allthemods:productivetrees/sawing/arsmagicalegacy/witchwood_planks

This recipe is added by the pack. It runs in the sawmill and gives 6 planks for 2 sawdust.

The sources show no other recipes in the pack that combine this mod's items with another mod's items. No quests involve the mod, so the quest book has nothing to add here.[7]

What changed in Ars Magica: Legacy between versions?

      2 parts

All the Mods 11 0.10.0-beta ships Ars Magica: Legacy 1.7.0. The pack's mod list shows it was first included in this pack version or an earlier one, so you can't tell from these sources exactly when it arrived.[2]

1.7.0: a reward item for every boss

The big change in the 1.7.0 changelog is ten new items, one dropped by each boss. Here is what each one does.[27]

      • Water Orbs (Water Guardian): worn in the Leggings slot, or the Belt slot with Curios. They give infinite air underwater, remove water drag and boost swim speed similar to Dolphin's Grace. Unbreakable.[27]
      • Fire Antennae (Fire Guardian): worn in the Helmet slot, or the Head slot with Curios. They negate all incoming fire damage, let you swim and see in lava as if it were water, and remove lava drag. Unbreakable and fire-proof like Netherite.[27]
      • Earth Armor (Earth Guardian): fire-proof like Netherite, enchantable, and it repairs itself using mana like Mage/Battlemage armor. It gives 16 armor, 4 armor toughness and 1 extra attack damage, beating Netherite in every metric except knockback resistance.[27]
      • Air Sled (Air Guardian): right-click to place it, then ride it for creative-like flight. Shift on the ground to dismount, and shift-right-click to pick it up.[27]
      • Winter's Grasp (Ice Guardian): a sword-like melee weapon dealing 4 attack damage. You can also throw it at enemies for 4 damage, and it pulls the target in. Unbreakable.[27]
      • Lightning Charm (Lightning Guardian): attracts items in a 16 block range, which is configurable. It can go in a Charm slot from Curios.[27]
      • Nature Scythe (Nature Guardian): an axe-like melee weapon dealing 12 attack damage. You can throw it for 12 damage too. Unbreakable.[27]
      • Life Ward (Life Guardian): adds a shield of 20 extra health (10 hearts), shown as a green heart outline. It regenerates half a heart per second if your last hit was 5 seconds or more ago. Regeneration speed, max amount and cooldowns are each configurable, and it fits a Charm slot from Curios.[27]
      • Arcane Spell Book (Arcane Guardian): an upgrade to the regular Spell Book, fire-proof like Netherite. Spells cast from it cost 20% less mana and are boosted in some stats by 40%, similar to the Augmented Casting talent. Both values are adjustable in config.[27]
      • Ender Boots (Ender Guardian): fire-proof like Netherite, enchantable, and self-repairing with mana like Mage/Battlemage armor. They give 3 armor and 3 armor toughness, equivalent to Netherite armor apart from the missing knockback resistance.[27]

      Other changes

The Spell Recipe got new textures in 1.7.0. The changelog credits @MoonlitLamps for those and for some of the new items.[27]
