What is YUNG's Better Strongholds?
1 part
YUNG's Better Strongholds completely redesigns Minecraft's strongholds. They become much bigger, more complex and more exciting to explore, while still feeling like vanilla. You'll find over 15 different rooms, several kinds of tunnels and hallways, staircases, traps, and even hidden areas.[1]
This pack runs version 5.1.2 of the mod, built for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge, and the mod has been in the pack since version 1.0 or earlier.[2]
Who it's for
This mod is for you if you like exploring and want the trip to a stronghold to feel like a real adventure instead of a quick dig through a few samey corridors. Expect a proper dungeon crawl: watch out for traps and keep an eye open for hidden areas as you go.[1]
The mod is designed to work alongside other worldgen mods, including the other YUNG's structure mods, Better End and End Remastered, so its strongholds should sit happily next to the rest of the pack's world generation.[1]
Unverified The sources don't confirm whether Repurposed Structures is installed in this pack or whether its strongholds are enabled here, so the Eye of Ender note above may not apply.
How do you get started with YUNG's Better Strongholds?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide
This mod doesn't add a tech tree or a crafting chain. It's a worldgen mod that completely redesigns vanilla strongholds, making them much more complex and exciting while still staying true to vanilla themes. Getting started is about knowing what you're walking into, not about what to craft first.[1]
Unverified No crafting recipes or quests for this mod were found in this pack's data, so there's no first item to make and no questline to follow.
What to expect underground
A stronghold here is much more than a few corridors and a portal room. You'll find over 15 different rooms, various types of tunnels and hallways, staircases, traps, and even hidden areas. Take your time, watch your step, and check the walls for secret spots.[1]
Finding a stronghold
Eyes of Ender still point you to these strongholds. If strongholds from Repurposed Structures are also enabled, your Eye of Ender leads to whichever stronghold is closest, so the one you reach might be a Repurposed Structures stronghold instead of a Better Stronghold.[1]
Unverified Whether Repurposed Structures is installed in this pack, and whether its strongholds are enabled, could not be confirmed.
Things that can vary
The mod has an option that lets small noodle caves slightly destroy strongholds, while large caverns leave them untouched. If this option is on, you might see a stronghold with a chunk carved out or find an unexpected way in through a cave.[3]
The mod also has settings for how often lanterns and torches spawn throughout the stronghold, which affects how dark the halls are when you arrive.[3]
Unverified The values this pack uses for the structure ruin, lantern rate and torch rate settings could not be confirmed. Bring your own light source just in case.
How does YUNG's Better Strongholds work?
3 parts
YUNG's Better Strongholds is a world generation mod. It completely redesigns Minecraft's strongholds, making them much more complex and exciting while still staying true to vanilla themes. So the core mechanics here are all about what you'll find underground and how these structures fit into your world.[1]
Unverified The available sources don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluid or item handling, or automation for this mod, so none are covered here.
What's inside a stronghold
Instead of the familiar vanilla layout, a redesigned stronghold is built from a big mix of pieces. Here's what you can run into:[1]
- Over 15 different rooms.[1]
- Various types of tunnels and hallways connecting everything together.[1]
- Staircases.[1]
- Traps, so watch your step.[1]
- Hidden areas.[1]
Caves, ruin and lighting
The mod has a structure ruin option that lets strongholds be slightly destroyed by small noodle caves. Large caverns won't affect them, so even with this option on, a stronghold won't get swallowed by a huge cave.[3]
Lighting is configurable too. One setting controls how often lanterns spawn throughout the stronghold, and another controls how often torches spawn.[3]
Unverified The pack's config files for this mod aren't available, so it's unconfirmed whether structure ruin is enabled in this pack or what lantern and torch spawn rates it uses.
Compatibility and finding strongholds
The mod is intended to be fully compatible with every worldgen mod. Examples include YUNG's Better Mineshafts, YUNG's Better Dungeons, YUNG's Extras, YUNG's Bridges, Better End and End Remastered.[1]
There's a special interaction with Repurposed Structures. If its strongholds are enabled, Eyes of Ender will lead you to whichever stronghold is closest, whether it's a Repurposed Structures stronghold or a Better Stronghold. So if your eye points somewhere unexpected, you may be heading to a different kind of stronghold than you think.[1]
Unverified It's unconfirmed whether this pack includes Repurposed Structures or has its strongholds enabled.
Which YUNG's Better Strongholds config options matter?
1 part
Unverified The pack doesn't include a config file for this mod, so no option names, defaults or ranges can be confirmed here. You can drop straight into a world without touching any settings.
Worldgen compatibility
Since there's nothing to configure, the thing worth knowing is that this mod is intended to be fully compatible with every worldgen mod, so you shouldn't need to disable anything to make other structure mods behave.[1]
One case does change how you find strongholds: if Repurposed Structures strongholds are enabled, an Eye of Ender locates whichever stronghold is closest, whether that's a Repurposed Structures one or a Better Stronghold.[1]
What changed in YUNG's Better Strongholds between versions?
2 parts
All the Mods 10 2.11 ships YUNG's Better Strongholds 1.21.1-NeoForge-5.1.2. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 1.0 or earlier. I have no pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs.[2]
5.1.2
- Lowered the minimum version requirements so the mod works on both 1.21 and 1.21.1.[4]
5.1.0
This was the port to 1.21.1. It changed quite a bit under the hood:[5]
- Added an optional ruin processor with its own config option, which is disabled by default.[5]
- Moved all other existing config options to structure rule processors.[5]
- Replaced the waterlog processor with a new liquid_settings option in the structure json.[5]
- Now uses the new Enhanced Terrain Adaptation from YUNG's API to guarantee the stronghold is buried.[5]
- Removed End Remastered's End Gate from the vanilla advancement.[5]
- Removed an unused config entry in the structure json, updated the config readmes and updated all structure NBT files.[5]
