What is YUNG's Better Strongholds?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

YUNG's Better Strongholds is a complete redesign of Minecraft's strongholds. Instead of the familiar vanilla layout, you get far more complex and exciting structures that still stay true to vanilla themes, so they feel like an upgrade rather than something out of place.[1]

What you'll find inside

  • Over 15 different rooms to explore.[1]
  • Various types of tunnels and hallways connecting everything together.[1]
  • Staircases, traps, and even hidden areas, so it pays to explore carefully and keep your eyes open.[1]

The mod is designed to be fully compatible with other worldgen mods, including the rest of the YUNG's structure mods, which means it can sit alongside other structure overhauls without fighting them.[1]

Tip: If Repurposed Structures has its own strongholds enabled, an Eye of Ender points you to whichever stronghold is closest, whether it's a Repurposed Structures one or a Better Stronghold. So if you end up somewhere unexpected, that's likely why.[1]

This pack ships version 1.21.1-NeoForge-5.1.2 of the mod, and it has been part of the pack since its 1.0 release or earlier.[2]

Unverified The available sources don't describe what loot these strongholds contain, whether the pack changes any of the mod's settings, or how strongholds fit into this pack's wider progression, so those details are left out here.

How do you get started with YUNG's Better Strongholds?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

This mod is different from most in the pack: it doesn't add gear for you to craft. It redesigns Minecraft's strongholds, so your first steps are about finding one and getting ready to explore it, not making a starter item.[1]

Expect a lot more variety than in vanilla. The strongholds have over 15 different rooms, several types of tunnels and hallways, staircases, traps and even hidden areas, while still keeping the vanilla look.[1]

What to do first

  1. Track down a stronghold with Eyes of Ender, just like in vanilla. If Repurposed Structures strongholds are enabled, the Eye points to whichever stronghold is closest, whether it's a Repurposed Structures one or a Better Stronghold.[1]
  2. Watch for ruined sections. Small noodle caves can slightly destroy a stronghold if that option is enabled, but large caverns leave it unaffected.[3]
  3. Check the End Portal Frames when you reach the portal room. Each frame has a configurable chance to spawn already filled with an Eye of Ender.[3]
Tip: Take your time in the rooms and corridors. The traps and hidden areas are part of the redesign, so don't assume a stronghold works like the vanilla layout you know.[1]

Unverified No crafting recipes, quests or in-pack changed values for this mod could be confirmed, so there is no recipe to craft first. The default values of the ruin and filled-frame options in this pack are also unconfirmed.

How does YUNG's Better Strongholds work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

This mod is different from most on the wiki. YUNG's Better Strongholds is a worldgen mod that redesigns Minecraft's strongholds, so what it adds is structure layout, not something you build or power.[1]

What the mod changes

Strongholds become much more complex and exciting while staying true to the vanilla themes. You'll find over 15 different rooms, various types of tunnels and hallways, staircases, traps, and even hidden areas.[1]

Stronghold options

The mod has settings that change how a stronghold generates. One lets strongholds be slightly destroyed by small noodle caves. Large caverns won't affect them.[3]

Another sets the chance for each End Portal Frame block to spawn already filled with an Eye of Ender.[3]

Unverified The values of these options in this pack, and whether the pack changes them, are set in the mod's config file, which the sources here do not show.

Compatibility and locating strongholds

The mod is intended to be fully compatible with every worldgen mod. Its listed examples are YUNG's Better Mineshafts, YUNG's Better Dungeons, YUNG's Extras, YUNG's Bridges, Better End, End Remastered and Repurposed Structures.[1]

Tip: If Repurposed Structures strongholds are enabled, Eyes of Ender will locate whichever stronghold is closest, whether it's a Repurposed Structures stronghold or a Better Stronghold. So the nearest stronghold you find may not be a Better Stronghold.[1]

Which YUNG's Better Strongholds config options matter?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.11 guide

Unverified The pack doesn't include a config file for this mod, so no option names, defaults or ranges can be confirmed here. You can drop straight into a world without touching any settings.

Worldgen compatibility

Since there's nothing to configure, the thing worth knowing is that this mod is intended to be fully compatible with every worldgen mod, so you shouldn't need to disable anything to make other structure mods behave.[1]

One case does change how you find strongholds: if Repurposed Structures strongholds are enabled, an Eye of Ender locates whichever stronghold is closest, whether that's a Repurposed Structures one or a Better Stronghold.[1]

What changed in YUNG's Better Strongholds between versions?

1 part

All the Mons 1.3.0 includes YUNG's Better Strongholds at version 1.21.1-NeoForge-5.1.3. It was first included in All the Mons 0.3.0-beta or earlier.[4]

Changes in 5.1.3

This is the version the pack runs, and its changelog lists three changes:[4][5]

  • A new config option sets the chance that each End Portal Frame block spawns already filled with an Eye of Ender.[5]
  • Some processors no longer attach unnecessary NBT data to blocks. This should help with some rare crashes when structures overlapped.[5]
  • Modded blocks and items now work with the extra JSON config files on Fabric. That fix is for Fabric, and the file in this pack is the NeoForge build.[4][5]

If you want to change how many portal frames start with an Eye of Ender, the new config option from this release is the one to look for.[5]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as betterstrongholds, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
