What is YUNG's Better Mineshafts?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
YUNG's Better Mineshafts replaces vanilla abandoned mineshafts with something much more interesting. Instead of boring straight lines, you get dynamic, varied webs of tunnels to explore. If you like caving and exploring while you hunt for loot, this one is for you.[1]
This pack ships version 1.21.1-NeoForge-5.1.1 of the mod.[2]
What you'll find
- 13 biome variants, including a rare mushroom mineshaft.[1]
- Abandoned workstations (common), with loot tucked away in the corners.[1]
- Workstation cellars (less common).[1]
- Ore deposits at the end of some tunnels, with coal, iron, redstone, gold, lapis, emerald and, very rarely, diamond.[1]
- Abandoned miners' outposts (rare).[1]
- Surface openings (very rare).[1]
- Loot out in the open too, in a chest on a minecart.[1]
Worldgen compatibility
The mod is intended to be fully compatible with every worldgen mod. Its project page names YUNG's Better Strongholds, YUNG's Better Dungeons, YUNG's Extras and YUNG's Bridges as examples.[1]
Where it fits in progression
Unverified The sources I was given don't say where this mod fits in the pack's progression, and they don't mention any quests or the ATM Star path for it. Treat it as an optional exploration and loot mod, and don't expect the pack to guide you toward it.
How do you get started with YUNG's Better Mineshafts?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Good news: there's nothing to craft before you can enjoy this mod. It overhauls vanilla abandoned mineshafts, turning boring straight lines into varied webs of tunnels. Your first step is simply to go find one.[1]
Unverified No recipes or quests for this mod's items turned up in the pack data I was given, so I can't give you a first-items-to-craft list. If you find one in your world, treat it as unconfirmed.
What to look for
- Abandoned workstations are common. Loot is tucked away in their corners.[1]
- Chests on minecarts sit out in the open, so keep an eye on the tracks.[1][3]
- Workstation cellars are less common and generate below workstations along the main shaft.[1][3]
- Ore deposits sit at the end of some tunnels. They can hold coal, iron, redstone, gold, lapis and emerald, and very rarely diamond.[1]
- Abandoned miners' outposts are rare. They can appear at the end of a small mineshaft tunnel.[1][3]
- Surface openings are very rare, so don't count on walking into a mineshaft from above ground.[1]
Where mineshafts generate
There are 13 biome variants, including a rare mushroom mineshaft, so the look of the tunnels changes with where you are.[1]
The mod's config sets the lowest and highest height for a mineshaft floor, and it also has an option to disable vanilla mineshafts. I couldn't confirm this pack's values for any of these settings, so check the config in your own instance before you plan a mining trip.[3]
How does YUNG's Better Mineshafts work?
6 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Good news and a heads-up: YUNG's Better Mineshafts is a world generation mod. It overhauls abandoned mineshafts, and nothing in the available sources mentions machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation for it. So the "mechanics" here are about how mineshafts are generated and what you can find in them.[1]
What the mod generates
Instead of boring straight lines, vanilla abandoned mineshafts become dynamic, varied webs of tunnels. You can find loot tucked away in the corners of abandoned workstations, or out in the open in a chest on a minecart.[1]
- 13 biome variants, including a rare mushroom mineshaft.[1]
- Abandoned workstations (common).[1]
- Workstation cellars (less common).[1]
- Ore deposits at the end of some tunnels, with coal, iron, redstone, gold, lapis, emerald and, very rarely, diamond.[1]
- Abandoned miners' outposts (rare).[1]
- Surface openings (very rare).[1]
How a mineshaft is laid out
Every mineshaft has a main shaft. Smaller tunnels generate along it, and each small shaft is built from a chain of "pieces" such as straights and turns. The piece chain length setting decides how many pieces make up one small shaft, which sets the overall size of small shafts.[3]
Along the main shaft you can get workstation side rooms, and below those workstations you can get workstation cellars. At the end of a small mineshaft tunnel, there is a chance for an Abandoned Miners' Outpost to spawn.[3]
Decorations and minecarts
The mod has separate spawn rate settings for cobwebs, for lanterns in the main shaft and for torches in small shafts. Minecarts holding chests have their own spawn rates in the main shaft and in small shafts. So do minecarts holding TNT.[3]
Ore deposits
Each ore deposit rolls what it contains. The mod has a percent chance for coal, iron, gold, lapis, redstone, emerald and diamond, plus a chance for a deposit to be cobblestone only. The mod's own tooltip warns that all of these values must add up to 100, or things won't work the way you want.[3]
Depth range and vanilla mineshafts
- minY is the lowest the floor of a mineshaft can be, and maxY is the highest.[3]
- disableVanillaMineshafts controls whether vanilla mineshafts are disabled.[3]
Unverified The sources do not include this pack's config files, so the actual values for spawn rates, ore chances, the depth range and the vanilla mineshaft toggle in this pack are unverified. The options above are described from the mod's own tooltips only.
Compatibility
The mod is intended to be fully compatible with every worldgen mod. Its project page names YUNG's Better Strongholds, YUNG's Better Dungeons, YUNG's Extras and YUNG's Bridges as examples.[1]
What changed in YUNG's Better Mineshafts between versions?
1 part
All the Mons 1.3.0 ships YUNG's Better Mineshafts 1.21.1-NeoForge-5.1.1. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mons 0.3.0-beta or earlier, so you've had these mineshafts for a long time.[4]
Mod changelog: 5.1.1
The one change in the 5.1.1 NeoForge changelog is that the minimum version requirements were lowered, so the mod works on both 1.21 and 1.21.1. It doesn't add or change anything you'd notice in the mineshafts themselves.[5]
Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so changes to it between individual All the Mons releases are unverified.

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as bettermineshafts, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
