What is Villages&Pillages?

3 parts

Villages&Pillages is a structure mod. It adds hostile, unfriendly pillages to the world, a thrilling contrast to the peaceful villages you already know. It's all about exploring new places as you travel, not about new machines or progression.[1]

Season 1: Witch Village

The mod gets seasonal updates, and the first season adds the Witch Village. You'll find it hidden deep in swamp and mangrove biomes. Expect mossy houses, bubbling cauldrons and treacherous bogs to cross before the village's dark secrets are revealed.[1]

Compatibility

The mod is designed to be fully compatible with all world generation mods. It currently offers enhanced compatibility with the Waystones mod.[1]

In this pack

The pack ships Villages&Pillages version 1.0.3 for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. It was first included in pack version 0.46 or earlier.[2]

How do you get started with Villages&Pillages?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Villages&Pillages is a structure mod that adds hostile and unfriendly pillages as a contrast to the peaceful villages. Its first season adds the Witch Village, so that's the place to head for first.[1]

Your first step: find the Witch Village

The mod is getting seasonal updates, and Season 1 adds the Witch Village. You'll find it hidden deep within swamp and mangrove biomes, so head for those if you want to see it. Expect mossy houses, bubbling cauldrons and treacherous bogs to get through before the village's dark secrets are revealed.[1]

  1. Travel to a swamp or mangrove biome, since that's where the Witch Village generates.[1]
  2. Look around for mossy houses and bubbling cauldrons, which mark the village.[1]
  3. Watch your step in the bogs while you explore. They're described as treacherous.[1]

Travel and compatibility

The mod is designed to be fully compatible with all world generation mods, so it should sit alongside the other biome and structure mods without trouble. It also has enhanced compatibility with the Waystones mod, which is handy once you've found a village you want to come back to.[1]

Tip: Since the Witch Village is hostile, get yourself properly geared up before you go looking for it. This is general advice rather than something the mod's page spells out.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm any in-pack recipes, quests or item descriptions for this mod, so there's no crafting order to follow here. If you spot something craftable or any loot worth chasing in the Witch Village, that isn't verified yet.

How does Villages&Pillages work?

5 parts

Villages&Pillages is a structure mod, so there are no machines, power or pipes to set up here. The mechanics worth knowing are how the Witch Village generates, what it is built from, and what you can find inside. The Witch Village is the first season of the mod, and it is described as hidden in swamps and mangrove biomes.[1]

Where and how it generates

The village can generate in swamp and mangrove swamp biomes. The biome list also includes the common swamp tags from other loaders as optional entries, so swamp biomes added by other mods can host it too.[3]

Placement uses the YUNG's API enhanced random spread type, with a spacing of 24 and a separation of 16. The structure is built in the surface structures step, starts at an absolute height of 68, and has a size of 7. Its pieces can reach up to 63 from the center.[4][5]

The village also reshapes the ground around it. Its terrain adaptation carves the top, and does nothing to the bottom.[5]

The village center and Waystones

Every village starts from a center pool with two options of equal weight. One is the standard center. The other is a Waystones variant that is only allowed when the Waystones mod is loaded, and it is marked as a priority piece. That matches the mod page, which says it offers enhanced compatibility with Waystones.[1][5][6]

Who lives there

The structure overrides mob spawns inside its pieces. Monster spawns are witches in groups of 4 to 8, and creature spawns are cats in groups of 2 to 4. The mod also has separate entity template pools for the witch, the villager and the cat.[5][7][8][9]

How the buildings get their look

The village pieces go through processor lists when they generate. Some blocks in the templates are swapped for others, and some are randomly removed or weathered. The chances below are the probability values written in the data files.[10][11]

  • Houses turn brown concrete into oak wood pillars, and orange concrete into a lit Campfire with signal fire on.[10]
  • In houses, Cobblestone has a probability of 0.75 to become Mossy Cobblestone, and Moss Block has a probability of 0.33. Vines have a probability of 0.7 to be removed, and Cobweb has a probability of 0.75.[10]
  • Black concrete becomes lit Black Candle clusters of 3 or 4, or is removed. White concrete can become a Flower Pot or is removed.[10][11]
  • The wider village processor swaps light gray concrete pillars for mossy cobblestone walls, and removes vines with a probability of 0.5.[11]
  • Both lists include custom processors for waterlogging and for flower pots. The house list also has custom processors for opened doors and brewing stands.[10][11]

Attic chest loot

The attic chest rolls two pools. The first rolls 2.0 to 4.0 times and gives 1 Emerald, 2.0 to 4.0 Cobweb, or 2.0 to 4.0 String, all at equal weight.[12]

The second pool rolls 3.0 to 5.0 times. It gives 1 Painting, 1 Flower Pot, 1 Book, 1 to 2 Leather, or 2.0 to 4.0 Glass Bottle. Leather has double the weight of the others.[12]

Unverified The witch house also has barrel and personal chest loot tables in the mod's data files, but the sources here do not show what they hold, so their contents are unverified.

How do you progress through Villages&Pillages?

2 parts

The sources for this pack show the mod as a structure you go out and find, the witch village, rather than a ladder of tiers. So progression here is about locating one and knowing what is inside before you go in.[4]

Where witch villages generate

The witch village is set to generate in swamp and mangrove swamp biomes. The biome list also names two optional swamp tags, so other modded swamp biomes can count too if they use those tags.[3]

Placement uses a spacing of 24 with a separation of 16, so villages are spread out rather than clustered. Only one structure, the witch village, sits in that structure set.[4]

The village also includes a cat, which has its own single-piece entry in the village's template pools.[7]

What you can loot

The loot tables in the mod's data show what the witch house containers hold. These are the mod's own tables, and the sources here do not show the pack changing them.[12][13]

Tip: If you want brewing supplies like glowstone dust, spider eyes, fermented spider eyes or a rabbit foot, the barrel in a witch house is where the loot tables point you. These are random rolls, so you will not get every item every time.[13]

Unverified The sources here show no quests involving this mod and no recipes that produce its items, so there is no quest or crafting chain to follow for it in this pack.

What changed in Villages&Pillages between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 8.2 ships Villages&Pillages 1.0.3. The mod was first included in All the Mods 10 0.46 or earlier. Here are the changes the changelogs list, newest first.[2]

  • 1.0.3: fixed compatibility with newer YUNG's API (version 5.1.4).[14]
  • 1.0.2: fixed possible deadlocks on worldgen.[15]
  • 1.0.1: improved witch village structure details.[16]

In the pack changelog

All the Mods 10 2.39 updated Villages & Pillages from 1.0.2 to 1.0.3, so that release brought in the YUNG's API compatibility fix.[14][17]
