What is Hellish Trials?

1 part

Hellish Trials adds unique trial dungeons to the Nether. If you loved the trial chambers from the Tricky Trials Update but wish they showed up in the Nether, this mod does exactly that.[1]

The dungeons use features from that update: vaults, trial spawners, the Breeze, and tons of wind charges. Expect a fight, not a quiet stroll.[1]

In this pack

The pack ships Hellish Trials 1.0.5 (the NeoForge build), and it has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 6.0 or earlier.[2]

The mod page says it is compatible with all mods that add Nether biomes and structures, so the dungeons can sit alongside the other Nether content in the pack. It also needs Architectury API to run.[1]

How do you get started with Hellish Trials?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Here's the good news for getting started: Hellish Trials doesn't have a crafting chain you need to work through first. The mod generates unique trial dungeons in the Nether dimension, so your first steps are about getting into the Nether and finding them.[1]

The dungeons use features from the Tricky Trials Update. That means vaults, trial spawners, the Breeze, and tons of wind charges. Expect a fight with plenty of wind-charge knockback, so don't go in carelessly.[1]

What to know before you go

  • The mod needs Architectury API to run, so it has to be installed alongside it.[1]
  • It is described as compatible with all mods that add Nether biomes and structures, so the trial dungeons should coexist with the other Nether content in the pack.[1]

First items to make

I don't have a recipe to point you to here. Nothing in the pack's data shows a crafting recipe that produces this mod's items, so there is no recipe block for this section. The dungeons themselves are the content.[1]

Unverified Which gear to bring, how to find the dungeons in the Nether, what the vaults contain, and the pack's own tuning of this mod (configs, quests, loot) could not be confirmed from the available sources, so I'm not listing them as fact.

How does Hellish Trials work?

4 parts

Heads up: this mod has no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or automation to learn. Hellish Trials is a world generation mod that adds trial chambers to the Nether, and the mechanics worth knowing are how the dungeon is placed and built. Its features come from the Tricky Trials Update: vaults, trial spawners, the Breeze and lots of wind charges.[1]

Where the trial chambers generate

The nether trial can appear in any biome in the vanilla Nether biome tag, so it should also work in biomes added by other mods that use that tag.[3][4]

Placement is random spread, with a spacing of 45 and a separation of 25. The structure also has an exclusion zone of 10 chunks around the vanilla nether_complexes structure set, so a trial chamber won't be generated right next to those big Nether structures.[5]

It generates in the underground structures step, with its start height set to an absolute value of 10. The terrain adapts by encapsulating the structure, and it can stretch up to 110 from its center.[4]

How the dungeon is assembled

The nether trial is a jigsaw structure with a size of 6. Its start pool holds a single piece, and the dungeon then branches out by pulling pieces from several pools.[4][6]

  • Corridors and rooms share one pool. Corridors 0, 1, 2, 4 and 5 have weight 4, while corridors 3 and 6 are rarer at weight 1. Rooms 7 to 10 have weight 3 each, and the elevator piece has weight 4.[7]
  • Spawner rooms come in variants numbered 0 to 7, all with equal weight.[8]
  • Vault rooms come in a normal vault and an ominous vault, with equal weight.[9]
  • Dead ends use a terminator pool with four pieces of equal weight: two terminators and two passage terminators. The corridor pool and the start pool both fall back to this pool when a piece can't be placed.[6][7][10]

Block variation inside the chambers

Every piece runs through the same processor list, which gives the chambers a worn, ruined look. Each rule swaps a block with a set probability. Quartz block turns into smooth quartz with probability 0.3 and into calcite with probability 0.2. Nether bricks become cracked nether bricks with probability 0.3.[11]

The deepslate and blackstone family is weathered too. Cobbled deepslate becomes blackstone with probability 0.05, and deepslate tiles and deepslate bricks both become cobbled deepslate with probability 0.1. Blackstone turns into polished blackstone with probability 0.2, and black terracotta becomes blackstone with probability 0.1.[11]

Watch out: The same processor list replaces every magenta glazed terracotta block in the structure with TNT, so watch your step while exploring.[11]

Loot

Decorated pots placed in the chambers get an extra loot table, the nether trial pots table, appended to them by the processor list.[11]

The elevator dispenser loot table makes 2 rolls, and each roll gives Wind Charge in a stack of 12 to 15. That's why the mod page promises tons of wind charges.[1][12]

Unverified The contents of the other nether trial loot tables (chests, vaults, ominous vaults, the other dispenser and the trial spawners) could not be confirmed, so their drops are not listed here.

How do you progress through Hellish Trials?

3 parts

Hellish Trials has no step-by-step progression to follow here. What the data files do show is where its Nether trial structures can appear and what the normal-tier loot looks like, so this section covers those.[3][13]

Where the trials show up

The Nether trial structure is allowed to generate in any biome in the Nether tag. So you don't need a special biome, just explore the Nether.[3]

Normal trial chest loot

The normal Nether trial chest has three loot pools. The first gives you one roll from a small set of utility items: Amethyst Shard (3 to 4), Wind Charge (3 to 4, and twice as likely as the others), Blaze Powder (2 to 3) and Glowstone Dust (4 to 6).[13]

The second pool is the main haul, with 3 to 4 rolls. Here is what it can give you:[13]

The third pool is a single roll that is mostly empty. Rarely it gives a Rib Armor Trim Smithing Template, so don't count on it.[13]

Dispenser loot

The normal trial dispensers use their own loot table with a single roll. It can give Arrow (10 to 15, the most likely result), a Lava Bucket, strong healing splash potions (1 to 3) or harming splash potions (1 to 2). Expect to be handed a mix of help and hazards.[14]

The elevator dispenser is much simpler: it has 2 rolls, and each roll gives 12 to 15 Wind Charge.[12]

Tip: Wind charges turn up in both the normal chest and the elevator dispenser, so you can stock up on them while you clear a trial.[12][13]

Unverified The contents of the ominous-tier loot, the vaults, the spawners and the other structure data were not available for this section, so they are not described here.

What changed in Hellish Trials between versions?

1 part

Hellish Trials has a short history in this pack. The All the Mods 10 6.0 changelog lists it as added, at version 1.0.5, and All the Mods 10 8.2 still ships that same version (HellishTrials-neoforge-1.0.5.jar). So if you have played anything from 6.0 up to 8.2, you have seen the same version of Hellish Trials.[2][15]

Hellish Trials 1.0.5

The mod's own changelog describes 1.0.5 as a hotfix. Here is what it changed:[16]

  • Removed loose loot and armor stands in the central chamber.[16]
  • Removed some unnecessary particle effects that were affecting performance.[16]

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as hellish_trials, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
