What is Dark Mode Everywhere?

3 parts

Dark Mode Everywhere gives you dark GUIs across the game. It uses the built-in 1.18 Minecraft shaders to turn GUI textures into a dark version, so it works in any GUI, not just vanilla screens. It also tries to adjust text colors so nothing becomes hard to read in dark mode.[1]

It's a quality-of-life mod, so it's for anyone who spends long sessions in inventories, machine screens and menus and wants something easier on the eyes. It's MIT licensed.[1]

Switching modes

The mod currently ships with 3 dark modes. You change between them with the button at the bottom left of the screen.[1]

If you like tinkering, you can add new GUI shaders by editing the "darkmodeeverywhereshaders.json" file. You do that through a resource loader mod or a resource pack.[1]

Fixing visual glitches

The mod has a shader blacklist. It's a list of class and method names, or any part of them, that stop the dark shader from being applied. The mod's own default list covers things like the crosshair, hotbar, hunger bar, experience bar, sky and title screen. There's also a dump option, off by default in the mod, that logs every 5 seconds which classes and methods were drawing something while the dark shader tried to apply. It helps you find the name to add if one element looks wrong.[1]

In this pack

This version of the pack includes Dark Mode Everywhere 1.21-1.3.4. The mod was already in the pack by version 0.32 or earlier.[2]

Unverified The sources show no quests, crafting or progression role for this mod, including on the ATM Star path. It is not on that path, so you can use it whenever you like.

How do you get started with Dark Mode Everywhere?

3 parts

Good news: there is nothing to craft for Dark Mode Everywhere. No recipes in this pack produce this mod's items, and no quests involve it, so there is no item order to follow. You just switch the dark mode on in the GUI.[1]

Find the button

The mod uses Minecraft's built-in shaders to turn GUI textures dark, and it also tries to adjust text colors so they stay readable. The project page says it currently provides 3 dark modes, and you change between them by clicking the button at the bottom left.[1]

The button's tooltip says to hold Shift to skip to Light Mode. That is the quickest way back to the normal look if a screen looks off.[3]

Move the button if it's in the way

The mod has separate position settings for the Inventory button and the Main Menu button. The horizontal offset is measured in pixels from the left of the GUI, and the vertical offset in pixels from the bottom.[3]

Fix any GUI that looks wrong

If one screen or overlay looks wrong in dark mode, you can blacklist it. The shader blacklist is a list of class:method strings, and the dark shader is not applied to any render method that matches. You can use just part of a string. For example, 'renderHunger' is enough to block the hunger bar's render method.[3]

To find the right string, turn on the shader dump option. Every 5 seconds it dumps the methods that were used to render GUIs the dark shader was applied to. Copy the string for the GUI you want to exclude into the blacklist.[3]

Tip: The dump option is off by default on the mod's project page. Turn it on only while you hunt for a method string, then switch it back off.[1]

Unverified The mod's project page lists a default blacklist that includes the title screen, the crosshair, the hotbar, and the food and experience bars. I can't confirm from the sources that this pack uses the same list, so check the config in your own install.

The mod can also load extra GUI shaders by editing darkmodeeverywhereshaders.json through a resource pack or a resource loader mod. That is optional, and you don't need it to get started.[1]

How does Dark Mode Everywhere work?

4 parts

This one is a little different from the usual machine mods. Dark Mode Everywhere is about how GUIs look, not about machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation. The sources describe none of those systems for this mod, so this section covers how the dark shader works and what you can tweak.[1]

How the dark shader works

The mod uses Minecraft's built-in 1.18 shaders to turn GUI textures into a dark mode. Because it works at the shader level, it can apply to any GUI in the game. It also tries to change text colors so they stay readable in dark mode.[1]

It provides 3 dark modes. You switch between them with the button at the bottom left of the GUI. The button's tooltip tells you to hold Shift to skip straight to Light Mode.[1][3]

If you want to add new GUI shaders, you can edit the darkmodeeverywhereshaders.json file and load it with a resource loader mod or a resource pack.[1]

Button positions in this pack

The pack changes where the inventory button sits. [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Inventory Button.X]] is the distance in pixels from the left of the GUI, and the pack sets it to 2 instead of the mod default of 32. [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Inventory Button.Y]] is the distance in pixels from the bottom of the GUI, and the pack sets it to 32 instead of the mod default of 2. In effect, the pack swaps the two default values.[3][4]

The main menu button uses the mod's defaults. [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.MAIN_X]] is 4 and [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.MAIN_Y]] is 40. [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.SHOW]] is set to false in the pack.[4]

The shader blacklist

Some on-screen elements look wrong when darkened, so the mod has a blacklist. METHOD_SHADER_BLACKLIST is a list of class:method strings for render methods that the dark shader will not be applied to. A string can be the class, the method, or any substring of them. For example, 'renderHunger' is enough to block 'net.minecraftforge.client.gui.overlay.ForgeGui:renderFood'.[3][4]

The pack's list includes the JEI fluid tank renderer, the crosshair, sky, hotbar, food bar and experience bar render methods, and also renderLogo and renderDirtBackground. It also includes several obfuscated method names such as m_93080_.[4]

Finding what to blacklist

If a GUI looks off and you want to exclude it, turn on METHOD_SHADER_DUMP. Every 5 seconds it dumps the methods that rendered GUIs the dark shader was applied to, as class:method strings. You can then copy a string, or part of one, into the blacklist. The pack ships with the dump set to false.[3][4]

Tip: Turn the dump on only while you hunt for a render method, then switch it back to false.[3][4]

Which Dark Mode Everywhere config options matter?

4 parts

Dark Mode Everywhere only has a client config in this pack, and it mostly controls where its buttons sit and which screens it leaves alone. The pack changed one pair of values, and it's the one you'll notice in game: the inventory button position.[4]

Inventory button position

The pack swaps the mod's default X and Y values for the inventory button. [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Inventory Button.X]] is 2 here (the mod default is 32), and it's measured in pixels from the left of the GUI. [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Inventory Button.Y]] is 32 here (the mod default is 2), measured in pixels from the bottom of the GUI.[4]

Tip: If the inventory button is in the wrong spot for you or overlaps another mod's button, change these two values. Both must be greater than 0.[4]

Main menu button

  • [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.SHOW]] is false in this pack, so the main menu button is turned off.[4]
  • [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.MAIN_X]] is 4, the same as the mod default. It's the distance in pixels from the left of the GUI.[4]
  • [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.MAIN_Y]] is 40, also the same as the mod default. It's the distance in pixels from the bottom of the GUI.[4]

Since the button is hidden, the position values only matter if you turn [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.SHOW]] back on.[4]

Shader blacklist

METHOD_SHADER_BLACKLIST is a list of class:method strings for render methods that the dark shader won't be applied to. You can give the full class and method, or just a part of the method name. For example, renderHunger is enough to block the hunger bar.[1][4]

This pack's list includes the JEI fluid tank renderer, plus entries such as renderCrosshair, renderSky, renderHotbar, renderFood, renderExperienceBar, renderLogo and renderDirtBackground. That keeps the crosshair, sky, hotbar, food and experience bars, the logo and the dirt background out of the dark treatment.[4]

Finding what to blacklist

If a GUI looks wrong in dark mode, METHOD_SHADER_DUMP can help you track it down. It's false in this pack. When enabled, it dumps every 5 seconds the methods that rendered GUIs the dark shader was applied to. You can then copy a class:method string from that dump into the blacklist.[1][4]

Tip: Turn the dump on only while you're hunting for a render method, then set it back to false.[4]

What changed in Dark Mode Everywhere between versions?

Dark Mode Everywhere has a very quiet history in All the Mods 10. In pack version 2.12 you get version 1.21-1.3.4 of the mod, shipped as darkmodeeverywhere-1.21-1.3.4.jar.[2]

It has been in the pack for a long time. The mod list says it was first included in All the Mods 10 0.32 or earlier.[2]

The only entry in the mod's own changelog that I have is for 1.21-1.3.3, and it just reads "1.21 Update". That is the version before the one in the pack today.[5]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Dark Mode Everywhere were available, and the changelog for 1.21-1.3.4 was not provided, so what changed in that release is unconfirmed.
