What is Better Advancements?

1 part

Better Advancements is a quality-of-life mod that reworks Minecraft's advancements screen so it actually works in a modded environment. It's the successor to BetterAchievements, rebuilt for the advancements system introduced in 1.12+, and its scope is deliberately cosmetic and QoL: it doesn't add items, blocks or progression of its own.[1]

The headline change is a screen-filling UI instead of the tiny default window, which matters a lot when you've got dozens of mods each adding their own advancement tab. Description boxes can also grow slightly larger so they're easier to read, and the tab's name gets added to the title of the advancements UI so you always know where you are.[1]

There are a couple of visual tweaks on top of that: you can change the colour of the advancement icons instead of the default gray, blue and orange, and there's a setting to stop the advancements background fading when you hover over it.[1]

Where it fits in this pack

The pack ships Better Advancements 0.4.2.19, and it's been included since version 0.32 or earlier, so it's been part of the experience for a long while.[2]

Because the mod is purely a UI layer over vanilla and modded advancements, there's nothing here to unlock or progress through. It's not on the ATM Star path and no quests involve it. Treat it as a free upgrade to a screen you'll be opening anyway, especially when a mod you've just started using drops a fresh advancement tab into the list.[1][2]

Tip: If you're building your own pack with custom advancements rather than just playing this one, the author suggests looking at Triumph instead, since Better Advancements is aimed at presentation rather than authoring.[1]

How do you get started with Better Advancements?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: Better Advancements doesn't ask you to craft anything or hunt for a special item. It's a cosmetic and quality-of-life mod that improves the advancements screen, so your first steps are just about opening that screen and seeing what's different.[1]

What changes when you open the advancements screen

  • The advancements UI fills the whole screen instead of the tiny default window.[1]
  • You can change the color of the advancement icons, instead of the default gray, blue and orange.[1]
  • There's a setting to stop the advancements background from fading when you hover over it.[1]
  • Description boxes can grow slightly larger, so they're easier to read.[1]
  • The title of the current tab is added to the title of the advancements UI.[1]

That's the mod's whole scope. It tidies up how advancements look and read, and it doesn't add gameplay content of its own.[1]

Tip: If you want to tweak the icon colors or stop the background fading on hover, look for those settings in the mod's options. I can't confirm the exact option names from my sources, so I'm not listing any here.[1]

Unverified I found no recipes, quests or in-game tooltips tied to Better Advancements in this pack, so there's no crafting order to follow and no recipe block for this section. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How does Better Advancements work?

4 parts

There are no machines, multiblocks or power networks to learn here. Better Advancements is a purely cosmetic and quality-of-life mod: it replaces the vanilla advancements screen with a better one and leaves the underlying advancement system, its triggers and its rewards completely alone. Everything below is about how that screen behaves in this pack.[1]

What the mod changes about the screen

  • The advancement UI fills the screen instead of the small vanilla window, so you can see far more of a tree at once.[1]
  • Advancement icons can be tinted with custom colours instead of the vanilla gray, blue and orange.[1]
  • The fading of the advancements background on hover can be switched off with a setting.[1]
  • Description boxes can grow slightly larger, which makes long modded advancement text easier to read.[1]
  • The name of the current tab is added to the title of the advancements UI.[1]

Criteria detail, the one pack change

The most useful system here is criteria detail. For a partially completed advancement it lists the individual criteria behind it, so an advancement that wants a long checklist can show you what is left instead of a single vague line. The option supports turning it off for vanilla behaviour, a spoiler-free mode that only reveals the criteria you have not obtained yet, and a full mode that shows both obtained and unobtained criteria.[3]

The pack changes this one on purpose. criteriaDetail is set to "Default" here, where the mod itself ships with the mode that lists the criteria you have already obtained.[3]

criteriaDetailRequiresShift is false in this pack, so the criteria list shows without you holding shift.[3]

The rest of the in-pack settings

Default colours

Completed advancements use #DBA213 for both defaultCompletedIconColor and defaultCompletedTitleColor, while uncompleted ones use #FFFFFF for defaultUncompletedIconColor and #0489C1 for defaultUncompletedTitleColor. Both defaultCompletedLineColor and defaultUncompletedLineColor are #FFFFFF.[3]

Tip: Every option here lives in the client config, so changing them only affects your own game and is safe to tweak on a server.[3]

Unverified Whether "Default" for criteriaDetail behaves like the spoiler mode or the full list in-game is not confirmed by the sources; check the in-game config screen if you want a specific behaviour.

Which Better Advancements config options matter?

3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Better Advancements is cosmetic and quality-of-life only, so its config is small. All of it lives in the client file, starting with criteriaDetail. Here's what's worth knowing and how this pack sets it.[1][4]

The one value the pack changed

criteriaDetail controls the criteria listed for partially completed advancements, like the biomes needed for 'Adventuring Time'. The mod's default is to list which criteria you have already obtained. This pack changes it and sets it to "Default".[4]

The file's own comment describes these modes: Off is the vanilla default, Spoiler only reveals unobtained criteria, and All shows both obtained and unobtained criteria.[4]

Tip: criteriaDetailRequiresShift is false in this pack, so the setting does not require holding Shift.[4]

Screen size and layout

Visual options

The mod lets you recolour advancement icons and stop the advancements background from fading on hover. In this pack doAdvancementsBackgroundFade is true, so the fade stays on. Set it to false if you want to stop the fade.[1][4]

The line options are defaultDrawDirectLines and defaultHideLines, and both are false here.[4]

What changed in Better Advancements between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 0.51 ships Better Advancements 0.4.2.19, the NeoForge build for 1.21.1. The mod has been in the pack since 0.32 or earlier.[2]

Mod releases

  • 0.4.2.19: the changelog lists a single change, an update to 1.21.1. This is the version you have in the pack right now.[2][5]
  • 0.4.2.16: the changelog lists a single change, which makes sure a mapping exists before the build. It is a change to how the mod is built, not a feature.[6]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so any change the pack itself made to Better Advancements is unverified.
