What is Bad Wither No Cookie - Reloaded?

3 parts

Bad Wither No Cookie - Reloaded is a small quality-of-life mod that deals with some of Minecraft's loudest moments. Normally the wither spawning, the ender dragon dying and thunder are broadcast so that everyone hears them, no matter where they are. This mod localizes those sounds, and it can also silence other sounds you choose to configure, including sounds added by other mods.[1]

This pack includes version 3.20.2 of the mod, running on NeoForge.[2]

Who it's for

If you play on a server, this one is for you. When someone runs a wither or dragon farm or uses spawners for these mobs, those world-wide sounds can fire over and over for everyone online. With this mod installed you won't have to listen to every wither and dragon somebody else is farming.[1]

Since 1.18.2 the mod runs only on the client, so it works on your own game even if the server doesn't have it installed.[1]

What it can silence

  • The wither spawn sound and the wither death sound.[1]
  • The ender dragon death sound.[1]
  • Lightning and thunder.[1]
  • Wandering trader and llama ambient sounds.[1]
  • Any other sound you add in the config file, including sounds from other mods.[1]
Tip: Not sure what a sound is called? Use the /listen command to see the names of sound events, then add the ones you want silenced to the config file.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

This isn't a progression mod. It's a lightweight sound tweak, and its whole job is to keep other players' boss farms and big storms from filling up your speakers.[1]

Unverified The project page says the sounds it lists are 'disabled by default' and that console messages about silenced sounds are also turned off by default. It's unclear whether this means those sounds are already silenced right after install or whether you need to enable them in the config yourself.

How do you get started with Bad Wither No Cookie - Reloaded?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing to craft here. This mod is a sound silencer, not a content mod. It quiets the loud world-wide broadcast sounds that play no matter how far away you are.[1]

The sources I have don't show any items, recipes or quests for it in this pack, so there's no first-items-to-make order and no recipe to show. I'd rather say that than invent a progression.[1]

What it does

The project page says the mod silences these sounds: wither, End Dragon, thunder, and any other sound that any mod makes. It's especially handy on servers where spawners or farms for those mobs are running.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Install it on your client only. From 1.18.2 onward the mod is client-sided and no longer runs on the server, so it can be on your client even if the server doesn't have it.[1]
  2. Know the defaults. The project page lists the sound types it mentions as disabled by default, and the console output for a silenced sound is also silenced by default. The page doesn't say whether this pack changed any of that, so check the config file yourself.[1]
  3. Find the name of a sound you want gone. Use the /listen command, which shows event sound names, then add the sound you care about to the config file.[1]
Tip: The page describes /listen as the way to see event sound names. Run it when a sound bugs you, then use the name it shows when you configure that sound.[1]

Unverified This pack's exact config values, the config option names, and whether any sounds are silenced out of the box in this pack are not confirmed by the available sources.

How does Bad Wither No Cookie - Reloaded work?

3 parts

This mod has no machines, multiblocks, power or item handling. It does one job: it stops certain loud sounds from reaching you. Some sounds, like the Wither spawning or the Ender Dragon dying, are normally broadcast to everyone on the server. This mod cancels those sounds so that one player's Wither farm doesn't interrupt everyone else.[1][3]

It is especially useful on servers where people run spawners or farms for these mobs. From 1.18.2 onward the mod is client-sided. You can have it installed even if the server doesn't, and it only changes what you hear.[1]

What this pack silences

Each built-in sound has its own on/off toggle in the common config. This pack turns all of them on, so these sounds are already muted when you load in:[3]

Tip: If you actually want to hear one of these, like the thunder, set its toggle to false in config/bwncr-common.toml. Because the mod runs on the client, this only changes what you hear.[1][3]

Silencing any other sound

The mod isn't limited to those four. You can mute any sound that any mod makes by adding its sound event name to the general.silenceUs list. In this pack that list is empty, so no extra sounds are muted out of the box.[1][3]

The tricky part is finding the exact sound event name. That's what the /listen command is for: it toggles a mode that lets you discover the names of sound events as they play.[1][3]

  1. Run the /listen command to turn on sound discovery.[1][3]
  2. Trigger or wait for the sound you want to mute, and note its sound event name.[1][3]
  3. Add that name to the general.silenceUs list in config/bwncr-common.toml, one sound event per line, with no commas.[3]
  4. Run /listen again to toggle discovery back off.[3]

Debug mode

general.debugMode is set to false in this pack. If you turn it on, the console fills up with messages showing which sounds are being received and whether each one is being cancelled. That's handy for checking that your custom list works, but leave it off for normal play because of the spam.[3]

Unverified The project page also says that on 1.16.1 and newer the mod blocks llama ambient sounds, but this pack's config has no llama toggle. Whether llama sounds are muted in this pack is unverified.

Which Bad Wither No Cookie - Reloaded config options matter?

3 parts

Everything this mod does lives in one file: config/bwncr-common.toml. It's a client-side mod as of 1.18.2, so the settings below only affect your own game, you can change them even if the server doesn't have the mod installed.[1][3]

The pack leaves the four broadcast silencers turned on, which matches the mod's own default of disabling all the sound types it covers. If you never want to hear a distant wither or dragon again, you don't have to touch anything.[1][3]

The silencers

Tip: These are the ones worth knowing about if you run a wither farm or an automated dragon setup: the mod is aimed squarely at stopping those world-wide broadcasts from firing every cycle.[1]

Silencing anything else

general.silenceUs is a list of extra sounds to silence, and the pack ships it empty. Add one sound event per line with no commas, and it'll be blocked alongside the built-in categories.[3]

To find the name of a sound you want gone, use the in-game toggle command /listen. It reports the sound event names as they fire, so you can copy the right id straight into the list.[1][3]

Debug output

general.debugMode is false in this pack. Turning it on makes the console spam every sound the mod receives and whether it was cancelled, which is handy for tracking down a stubborn noise but noisy the rest of the time. Flip it back off once you've found what you're after.[3]

What changed in Bad Wither No Cookie - Reloaded between versions?

1 part

Good news: this mod's version history is short and easy to follow. All the Mods 10 2.12 ships Bad Wither No Cookie - Reloaded 3.20.2, and the mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 1.1 or earlier.[2]

Mod releases around the pack's version

  • 3.20.0: updated to 1.21.1 and enabled the built-in config screen.[4]
  • 3.20.1: added a logo to the mod.[5]
  • 3.20.2: fixed the thunder sound id check. This is the version your pack runs.[2][6]

Only the 3.20.2 fix changes how the mod behaves in the sound department. The logo in 3.20.1 is purely cosmetic.[5][6]
