What is Spiky Spikes?

2 parts

Spiky Spikes adds spike blocks that hurt mobs standing on them, which makes them a handy tool for mob farms. There are 6 tiers, and each one behaves differently. The pack includes version 21.1.2 of the mod, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1.[1][2]

The six tiers

  • Wooden Spike: slowly damages mobs but does not deal a killing blow. It brings mobs down to half a heart.[1][3]
  • Stone Spike: damages and kills mobs, but they drop no loot and no experience.[1][3]
  • Iron Spike: kills mobs and they drop their normal loot, but no experience.[1][3]
  • Golden Spike: kills mobs and they drop experience, but no loot.[1][3]
  • Diamond Spike: deals a lot of damage, and mobs drop everything as if a player had killed them. You can put most sword enchantments on it using an anvil.[1][3]
  • Netherite Spike: does everything the Diamond Spike does, and it resists explosions. The wither boss cannot destroy it, and it deals no damage to players.[1][3]

In short, the more expensive the spike, the more damage it deals, and the kill behavior changes with each tier. Pick the tier that matches what your farm needs: loot only, XP only, or both.[3]

Where it fits in the pack

The "Spiky Spikes" quest quest sits in Chapter 2: The Cool Parts and unlocks after the Getting Fluid XP quest. The quest pitches the mod as an alternative if you don't like Iron Spikes or Mob Mashers. Its task accepts any one of the six spikes, so you only need to get one to complete it.[3]

Tip: If you plan to enchant Diamond or Netherite Spikes, get all the spikes you want to enchant ready first. Enchanted books can be applied to a whole stack at once, so enchanting more spikes later wastes books.[1]

How do you get started with Spiky Spikes?

5 parts

Spiky Spikes gives you six tiers of spike blocks for mob farms. The pack's quest book covers them in the quest "Spiky Spikes" quest, in Chapter 2: The Cool Parts, right after Getting Fluid XP. The quest accepts any one of the six spikes.[3]

The more expensive the spike, the more damage it does, and each tier changes what happens when a mob dies. Here is how I'd work up the tiers.[3]

Wooden Spike

The Wooden Spike uses the mod's own recipe. It slowly damages mobs but does not deal a killing blow.[4][5]

Iron and Golden Spikes

These two split the rewards. The Iron Spike gives normal loot without experience. The Golden Spike gives experience without any loot. The pack has changed both recipes from the mod's, so follow the recipes below.[3][4][5]

Diamond Spike

The Diamond Spike deals a lot of damage, and mobs drop all their loot as if a player had killed them. It also accepts most sword enchantments through an anvil. The pack changed this recipe too.[1][4][5]

Tip: Before you enchant Diamond or Netherite Spikes, have every spike you want to enchant ready. Enchanted books can be applied to a whole stack, so enchanting extra spikes later wastes more books.[1]

Netherite Spike

The Netherite Spike is the top tier. It does everything the Diamond Spike does, and it resists explosions and the wither boss. It also does not damage players. The pack changed its recipe as well, so check the one below.[3][4][5]

How does Spiky Spikes work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Spiky Spikes adds six spike blocks, and each one changes what happens when a mob dies on it.[5]

What each spike does to loot

The tier you pick decides what a killed mob gives you, so choose it based on what your farm should produce.[1][5]

Enchanting diamond and netherite spikes

The Diamond and Netherite spikes accept most sword enchantments, which you apply via an anvil.[5]

Tip: Have all the spikes you want to enchant ready before you start. You can apply an enchanted book to a whole stack at once, so enchanting more spikes later wastes more books.[1]

Crafting

The pack changes the recipes for the Iron, Golden, Diamond and Netherite spikes. The Stone and Wooden spikes use the mod's own recipes. The blocks below show the exact in-pack recipes.[6]

How do you progress through Spiky Spikes?

2 parts

Spiky Spikes gives you six tiers of spikes. In this pack the mod appears in the "Spiky Spikes" quest quest in Chapter 2: The Cool Parts, which comes after the Getting Fluid XP quest. The quest pitches the mod as an alternative if you don't like Iron Spikes or Mob Mashers.[3]

The quest task accepts any one of the six spikes, so whichever tier you make first is enough. The more expensive the spike, the more damage it does, but each tier also changes what a kill gives you.[3]

Tier breakdown

Crafting each tier

The Wooden Spike and Stone Spike use the mod's own recipes. The Iron, Golden, Diamond and Netherite Spike recipes are all changed by this pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod. The recipes below are the exact in-pack versions.[4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Spiky Spikes?

3 parts

Spiky Spikes shows up in a single quest in the pack, so this one is quick. It sits in the chapter "Chapter 2: The Cool Parts" and is called "Spiky Spikes" quest.[3]

What the quest asks for

The task is easy: you just need to hold any one of the mod's spikes. Wooden Spike, Stone Spike, Iron Spike, Golden Spike, Diamond Spike and Netherite Spike all count, so you can pick whichever tier you can afford.[3]

Where it fits in the order

The quest comes right after the "Getting Fluid XP" quest in the same chapter. You need to finish that one first before Spiky Spikes unlocks.[3]

What the quest says about the tiers

The quest pitches Spiky Spikes as an alternative if you don't like Iron Spikes or Mob Mashers. It says there are 6 tiers, and the more expensive the spike, the more damage it deals. Each tier also behaves differently when it kills something.[3]

  • The Wooden Spike won't kill.[3]
  • The Stone Spike kills, but doesn't drop items or XP.[3]
  • The Iron Spike drops items but no XP.[3]
  • The Golden Spike does the opposite of Iron: it drops XP but no items.[3]
  • The Diamond Spike gives player-kill drops, and you can enchant it like a sword.[3]
  • The Netherite Spike does everything Diamond can, and adds blast resistance, even against the Wither.[3]
Tip: If you're after XP from a mob farm, the quest's description points you to the Golden Spike. If you want item drops, go for Iron or higher.[3]

What changed in Spiky Spikes between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.2.1 ships Spiky Spikes 21.1.2. The mod has been in the pack since version 1.0 or earlier.[2]

The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelog.[7]

Mod changelog

  • 21.1.0 (2024-09-17): the mod was ported to Minecraft 1.21.1.[7][8]
  • 21.1.1 (2025-05-01): improved mod compatibility for spikes that yield experience drops.[7][8]
  • Newest entry (2025-08-25): added an entity type tag called spikypikes:spike_damage_immune. The changelog files this under a v21.1.1 heading, even though it appears in the 21.1.2 changelog, and the tag is spelled exactly like that there ('spikypikes', not 'spikyspikes'). I'm repeating it as written.[7]

If you're on 1.2.1, you already have all of these changes.[2][7]
