What is Spiky Spikes?

2 parts

Spiky Spikes gives you 6 tiers of spikes. The more expensive the spike, the more damage it deals, and each tier also does something different when it kills a mob.[1]

The six tiers

The mod's project page adds a few details. It pitches the spikes as a way to improve your mob farms. Wooden spikes slowly damage mobs and bring them down to half a heart. Diamond and netherite spikes can take most sword enchantments through an anvil, and netherite spikes deal no damage to players.[2]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack includes Spiky Spikes 21.1.2 for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. You'll meet it in the quest "Spiky Spikes" quest in Chapter 2: The Cool Parts, which unlocks after the Getting Fluid XP quest. The quest pitches it as an alternative if you don't like Iron Spikes or Mob Mashers, and it completes when you have any one of the six spikes.[1][3]

Tip: Before enchanting diamond or netherite spikes, get every spike you want to enchant ready first. Enchanted books can be applied to a whole stack at once, so enchanting more spikes later wastes extra books.[2]

How do you get started with Spiky Spikes?

3 parts

Spiky Spikes gives you 6 tiers of spikes for your mob farms, and each tier does something different when a mob dies on it. In this pack, the quest "Spiky Spikes" quest sits in Chapter 2: The Cool Parts, after Getting Fluid XP. It completes when you hold any one of the six spikes, so you can start with whichever tier fits your farm.[1][2]

Start with the cheap tiers

The Wooden Spike slowly damages mobs, but does not deal a killing blow. The pack leaves its recipe as the mod's own. Wooden spikes bring mobs down to half a heart.[2][4][5]

The Stone Spike also keeps the mod's own recipe. It kills mobs, but they drop no loot and no experience. It's good for clearing mobs out, not for collecting anything from them.[2][4][5]

Pick your drops: iron or gold

From the iron tier up, the pack has changed the recipes. Use the recipe blocks below, not what you remember from the mod's defaults. The Iron Spike kills mobs and gives you their normal loot, but no experience.[4][5]

The Golden Spike is the opposite. Mobs drop only experience and no loot. Iron and gold each give you half of what you want, so which one you build first depends on whether you need items or XP.[4][5]

Go for the full drops

The Diamond Spike deals a lot of damage, and mobs drop all their loot as if a player had killed them. It also accepts most sword enchantments through an anvil. The pack changes this recipe as well.[2][4][5]

The Netherite Spike does everything the diamond spike does. It is also resistant to explosions and to the wither boss, and it does not damage players. The pack changes this recipe too.[1][2][4][5]

Tip: Before you enchant diamond or netherite spikes, get all the spikes you want to enchant ready first. Enchanted books can be applied to the whole stack at once, so enchanting more spikes later would use up more of your books.[2]

How does Spiky Spikes work?

3 parts

Spiky Spikes adds six spike blocks, and each one changes what happens when a mob dies on it.[5]

What each spike does to loot

The tier you pick decides what a killed mob gives you, so choose it based on what your farm should produce.[2][5]

Enchanting diamond and netherite spikes

The Diamond and Netherite spikes accept most sword enchantments, which you apply via an anvil.[5]

Tip: Have all the spikes you want to enchant ready before you start. You can apply an enchanted book to a whole stack at once, so enchanting more spikes later wastes more books.[2]

Crafting

The pack changes the recipes for the Iron, Golden, Diamond and Netherite spikes. The Stone and Wooden spikes use the mod's own recipes. The blocks below show the exact in-pack recipes.[4]

How do you progress through Spiky Spikes?

2 parts

Spiky Spikes gives you 6 tiers of spikes. The pack's quest "Spiky Spikes" quest sits in Chapter 2: The Cool Parts, right after the Getting Fluid XP quest. Its task accepts any one of the six spikes, so you can pick your tier and still tick it off.[1]

The more expensive the spike, the more damage it does. Each tier also changes what happens when something dies on it, so pick the tier based on what you want from your mob farm.[1]

Tier breakdown

Crafting each tier

The Wooden and Stone Spike recipes are the mod's own. The Iron, Golden, Diamond and Netherite Spike recipes are changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. The recipes below are the exact ones in this pack.[4]

Netherite SpikeChanged by the pack

Copy Components Shapeless Recipe (spikyspikes)

Recipe id: spikyspikes:netherite_spike

The pack changes this recipe. It is a shapeless recipe that uses the mod's copy components recipe type.

Tip: The Netherite Spike is not crafted from scratch in this pack: its recipe takes a Diamond Spike as one of its inputs. Since Netherite does everything Diamond does and more, the Diamond tier is your stepping stone to it.[1][4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Spiky Spikes?

1 part

Spiky Spikes only shows up in one quest chapter in this pack: Chapter 2: The Cool Parts. There's a single quest for it.[1]

Spiky Spikes (Chapter 2: The Cool Parts)

The quest "Spiky Spikes" quest unlocks after the Getting Fluid XP quest in the same chapter, so you'll reach it once you've got that one done.[1]

The task is flexible: you only need to submit one spike, and any of the six tiers counts. That means Wooden Spike, Stone Spike, Iron Spike, Golden Spike, Diamond Spike or Netherite Spike will all complete it.[1]

The quest text pitches spikes as an alternative if you don't like Iron Spikes or Mob Mashers, and it also sums up what each tier does on a kill. The more expensive the spike, the more damage it deals.[1]

  • Wooden: won't kill.[1]
  • Stone: kills, but doesn't drop items or XP.[1]
  • Iron: drops items but no XP.[1]
  • Gold: the opposite of Iron, so it gives XP but no items.[1]
  • Diamond: gives player kill drops, and it can be enchanted like a sword.[1]
  • Netherite: does everything Diamond can, plus blast resistance, even against the Wither.[1]

What changed in Spiky Spikes between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Spiky Spikes 21.1.2, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod has been in the pack since version 1.0 or earlier. I have no pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs.[3]

Changes by mod release

  • 21.1.0 (2024-09-17): the mod was ported to Minecraft 1.21.1.[6][7]
  • 21.1.1 (2025-05-01): compatibility with other mods improved for spikes that yield experience drops.[6][7]
  • 21.1.2, entry dated 2025-08-25: a new entity type tag named spikypikes:spike_damage_immune was added. The changelog files this entry under a v21.1.1 heading, and the namespace is spelled "spikypikes" there, so I'm giving it exactly as written.[6]

The entity type tag is the one change in this list that affects how spikes treat entities. The changelog doesn't say what the tag does, so check it in-game before you rely on it.[6]

Tip: If you're building a spike-based mob farm that uses experience drops, the 21.1.1 compatibility improvement is already included in the version this pack ships.[3][6]
