What is Spiky Spikes?

3 parts

Spiky Spikes adds spike blocks in six tiers, and each tier behaves differently. The mod is built for mob farms: put spikes where mobs walk, and they do the killing for you. This pack ships version 21.1.1 of the mod for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1, and it has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[1][2]

The six tiers

  • Wooden: slowly damages mobs, but does not deal a killing blow. The mod page shows it bringing mobs down to half a heart.[1]
  • Stone: damages and kills mobs, but drops no loot or experience.[1]
  • Iron: kills mobs and drops normal loot, but no experience.[1]
  • Golden: kills mobs and drops only experience, with no loot.[1]
  • Diamond: deals a lot of damage, and mobs drop all their loot as if a player had killed them. It can take most sword enchantments, applied at an anvil.[1]
  • Netherite: does everything the diamond spike does. It also resists explosions, can't be destroyed by the wither boss, and deals no damage to players.[1]

Who it's for

If you want to tune a farm, this is the mod for you. Pick iron for loot only, golden for experience only, or diamond and netherite for full drops. Netherite is also the safest choice if you'll be standing near your own farm.[1]

Tip: Get all the diamond or netherite spikes you want to enchant ready before you start. Enchanted books can be applied to a whole stack at once, so enchanting more spikes later wastes extra books.[1]

Where it fits in progression

The sources I have don't show any quest or ATM Star path involvement for this mod, and they don't show any pack changes to it. Treat it as an optional tool for your mob farms, and don't expect it to be a required progression step.[1][2]

How do you get started with Spiky Spikes?

5 parts

Spiky Spikes gives you 6 tiers of spikes, and each one has its own job in a mob farm. You don't need to rush to the top tier. Pick the spike that matches what you want from the mobs, and work up from there.[1]

Wooden Spike: the gentle starter

The Wooden Spike slowly damages mobs but does not deal a killing blow, and it brings mobs down to half a heart. The recipe is the mod's own, and the pack hasn't changed it.[1][3][4]

Stone Spike: kills with no drops

The Stone Spike damages and kills mobs, but they drop no loot and no experience. This is also an unchanged mod recipe.[1][3][4]

Iron and Golden Spikes: pick your reward

These spikes split the rewards. The Iron Spike gives normal loot but no experience. The Golden Spike gives only experience and no loot. The pack has changed both recipes, so don't rely on recipes you remember from other packs.[3][4]

Diamond Spike: full loot and enchantments

The Diamond Spike is the all-rounder. It deals a lot of damage, and killed mobs drop all their loot, as if a player had killed them. It also accepts most sword enchantments through an anvil. The pack has changed this recipe too.[1][3][4]

Tip: Before you enchant Diamond or Netherite spikes, have every spike you want to enchant ready. You can apply enchanted books to the whole stack at once, so enchanting more spikes later wastes extra books.[1]

Netherite Spike: the top tier

The Netherite Spike gives the same full loot and enchantment support as the Diamond Spike. On top of that, it resists explosions and the wither boss, and it does not damage players. The pack has changed this recipe as well, so check the recipe below.[1][3][4]

If you're unsure which spike to craft first, start with the Wooden or Stone Spike. Move to the Iron, Golden, Diamond or Netherite Spike when you know what you want your farm to drop.[1][4]

How does Spiky Spikes work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Spiky Spikes adds six spike blocks, and each one changes what happens when a mob dies on it.[4]

What each spike does to loot

The tier you pick decides what a killed mob gives you, so choose it based on what your farm should produce.[1][4]

Enchanting diamond and netherite spikes

The Diamond and Netherite spikes accept most sword enchantments, which you apply via an anvil.[4]

Tip: Have all the spikes you want to enchant ready before you start. You can apply an enchanted book to a whole stack at once, so enchanting more spikes later wastes more books.[1]

Crafting

The pack changes the recipes for the Iron, Golden, Diamond and Netherite spikes. The Stone and Wooden spikes use the mod's own recipes. The blocks below show the exact in-pack recipes.[5]

How do you progress through Spiky Spikes?

3 parts

In this pack the spikes climb a material ladder: Wooden Spike, Stone Spike, Iron Spike, Golden Spike, Diamond Spike and Netherite Spike. Most tiers are crafted around the matching sword, and the top tier is an upgrade of the one before it.[3]

Early tiers: wood and stone

The wooden and stone spikes use the mod's own recipes, so the pack has not changed them. Both are shaped crafting recipes that start from the matching sword.[3]

Mid tiers: iron, gold and diamond

This is where the pack steps in. The recipes for the iron, golden and diamond spikes are all marked as changed by the pack, so they are not the mod's defaults. They are still shaped crafting recipes built around the matching sword, so treat the recipes below as the truth for this pack.[3]

Tip: The iron, golden and diamond recipes ask for items from the matching ingot, gem or storage block tags rather than one fixed item, so any item that carries the right tag is accepted.[3]

Top tier: netherite

The Netherite Spike is not crafted from a sword like the others. It is a shapeless upgrade recipe that builds on the Diamond Spike, and the pack has changed it. Craft your diamond spike first, then upgrade it.[3]

1 part

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.1.2 ships Spiky Spikes version 21.1.1, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier. The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelog.[2]

Mod releases

  • v21.1.1-1.21.1 (2025-05-01): improved mod compatibility for spikes that yield experience drops. This is the version in the pack.[2][6]
  • v21.1.0-1.21.1 (2024-09-17): ported the mod to Minecraft 1.21.1.[6]
