What is Spiky Spikes?

2 parts

Spiky Spikes adds spike blocks that hurt whatever walks over them, and it's built to improve your mob farms. There are 6 tiers, and each one behaves differently, so the tier you pick decides what your farm gives you.[1]

This pack includes version 21.1.1 of the mod, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[2]

The six tiers

  • Wooden: slowly damages mobs but does not deal a killing blow. Its screenshot caption says it brings mobs down to half a heart.[1]
  • Stone: damages and kills mobs, but drops no loot and no experience.[1]
  • Iron: damages and kills mobs, and drops normal loot without experience.[1]
  • Golden: damages and kills mobs, and drops only experience without any loot.[1]
  • Diamond: deals a lot of damage, and mobs drop all their loot as if a player had killed them. It can take most sword enchantments, applied via an anvil.[1]
  • Netherite: does everything Diamond does, and it's also resistant to explosions and can't be destroyed by the wither boss. It deals no damage to players.[1]

Who it's for

If you build mob farms, this mod is for you. Iron gives you loot, Golden gives you experience, and Diamond or Netherite give you both, with enchantments on top. Wooden is the odd one out, because it does not deal a killing blow. That makes it handy if you want mobs weakened but still alive.[1]

Tip: Before you enchant Diamond or Netherite spikes, get all the spikes you want to enchant ready first. Enchanted books can be applied to the whole stack, so enchanting more spikes later wastes extra books.[1]

Unverified The sources here don't show where the mod fits in the pack's quest book, and they don't confirm any quests or an ATM Star path for it.

How do you get started with Spiky Spikes?

5 parts

Spiky Spikes adds a spike for each tier from wooden to netherite, and each tier does something different to mobs. Your first steps here are mostly about picking the right spike for the job, because the tier decides what happens to a mob and what it drops when it dies.[3]

The pack changed some of the recipes, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. The Iron, Golden, Diamond and Netherite spikes use pack-changed recipes. The Wooden and Stone spikes use the mod's own recipes. Every recipe block below shows the real in-pack recipe.[4]

Wooden Spike

The Wooden Spike slowly damages mobs but does not deal a killing blow. Use it when you want mobs worn down without dying.[3][4]

Stone Spike

Mobs killed by the Stone Spike do not drop any loot or experience. It's handy when you only want mobs gone and don't want drops piling up.[3][4]

Iron Spike or Golden Spike

These split the rewards between them. With the Iron Spike, killed mobs drop their normal loot but no experience. With the Golden Spike, killed mobs drop only experience and no loot. Pick the one that matches what you want from the farm.[3][4]

Diamond Spike

With the Diamond Spike, killed mobs drop all their loot as if a player had killed them. It also accepts most sword enchantments through an anvil.[3][4]

Netherite Spike

The Netherite Spike has the same loot behavior and enchanting as the Diamond Spike. On top of that it resists explosions and the wither boss, and it does not damage players.[3][4]

Tip: Before you enchant Diamond or Netherite spikes, have every spike you want to enchant ready first. Enchanted books can be applied to the whole stack at once, so enchanting more spikes later uses up extra books.[1]

How does Spiky Spikes work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Spiky Spikes adds six spike blocks, and each one changes what happens when a mob dies on it.[3]

What each spike does to loot

The tier you pick decides what a killed mob gives you, so choose it based on what your farm should produce.[1][3]

Enchanting diamond and netherite spikes

The Diamond and Netherite spikes accept most sword enchantments, which you apply via an anvil.[3]

Tip: Have all the spikes you want to enchant ready before you start. You can apply an enchanted book to a whole stack at once, so enchanting more spikes later wastes more books.[1]

Crafting

The pack changes the recipes for the Iron, Golden, Diamond and Netherite spikes. The Stone and Wooden spikes use the mod's own recipes. The blocks below show the exact in-pack recipes.[5]

How do you progress through Spiky Spikes?

3 parts

Spiky Spikes follows a material ladder in this pack: Wooden Spike, Stone Spike, Iron Spike, Golden Spike, Diamond Spike and Netherite Spike. Each one has its own crafting recipe, so you can move up as your resources improve.[4]

The pack's quest book has no quests for this mod, so the recipes below are your whole progression guide.[4]

Early tiers: wood and stone

The wooden and stone spikes use the mod's own recipes, and the pack has not changed them. Both are shaped crafting recipes.[4]

Middle tiers: iron, gold and diamond

From iron upward, the pack has changed the recipes, so don't rely on what you remember from the base mod. The recipes below are the exact in-pack versions. Some slots accept any item from a shared tag, so matching items from other mods work there too.[4]

Final tier: netherite

The netherite spike is an upgrade of the diamond spike rather than a build from scratch, and the pack changed this recipe too. It is a shapeless recipe, so ingredient placement doesn't matter. Craft the diamond spike first.[4]
