What is Skyblock Builder?
2 parts
Skyblock Builder lets you create custom skyblock islands through config. Instead of a fixed starting island, the island is a schematic file that you make yourself, and you also set the possible spawn points for it.[1]
To make that schematic, you use the vanilla structure block or the mod's Structure Saver item.[1]
Starting a world
The mod adds a "Skyblock" world type. On the client, you find it under "More World Options..." when you create a new world. The mod is required on both the server and the client, so everyone who joins needs it installed.[1]
For a server, you set the world type in server.properties. The value depends on the Minecraft version, and the mod's own page lists skyblockbuilder:skyblock for 1.18 and later.[1]
In this pack
The pack ships Skyblock Builder 21.1.36, and it has been in the pack since version 1.0 or earlier. The mod also depends on LibX.[1][2]
How do you get started with Skyblock Builder?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide
Good news first: Skyblock Builder doesn't ask you to craft anything to get going. It's the mod that builds your starting skyblock island from configuration, so your first steps are about the world and the island, not a crafting chain.[1]
Starting a world
The mod adds a "Skyblock" world type. On the client, you'll find it under "More World Options..." when you create a new world. The mod is required on both the server and the client.[1]
If you're running a server, set the world type to skyblockbuilder:skyblock in server.properties. That's the name used for Minecraft 1.18 and later.[1]
How the island is made
The island is a schematic file with one or more possible spawn points. You can create the schematic with the vanilla structure block or with the mod's Structure Saver item. This matters if you want to change the starting island, because it's all driven by config.[1]
Using the Structure Saver
- Shift-right click a block to set a corner of the area you want to save.[3]
- Right click to save the schematic.[3]
- Made a mistake? Shift-left click to restore the previous position configuration.[3]
The saver also has a few options. You can ignore air blocks in the selected area so they aren't saved to the template, and you can choose whether the selected positions are kept after saving. You can also have the file generated as an editable .snbt file, and you can have the template, including its spawns, added automatically to the templates.json5 config.[3]
Teams
The mod also handles teams. Its messages show that players can be invited to a team, that join requests and visits from other players can be switched on or off, and that you can list a team's spawns. The exact commands aren't covered in the material I have, so I haven't listed them.[3]
Unverified This pack's recipes and quests don't involve this mod, and I have no confirmed information about which island template the pack ships or what its first crafted items should be. For that, check the pack's own quest book and your first world.
How does Skyblock Builder work?
6 parts
Skyblock Builder isn't a machine or power mod. It builds the skyblock world itself: it pastes island templates, picks spawn points, and manages teams, teleports and spawn protection, all through config files. This section walks through how those systems work in this pack.[1]
Island templates
Every island comes from a schematic file. You can make one with the vanilla structure block or with the Structure Saver, then set possible spawn points for it.[1][3]
- Shift-right click a block with the Structure Saver to set a corner position.[3]
- Right click to save the schematic. Shift-left click restores your previous position setup.[3]
- Its options let you ignore air blocks, keep the selected positions after saving, save as an editable .snbt file, and add the template and its spawns to the templates.json5 config automatically.[3]
The pack's templateList has seven templates: simple_life, witch_cottage, default, sanguine sanctuary, steve's staycation, piggy and skyfactory. The first entry is the default template. The shared spawn island is a separate entry, mainSpawnIsland.file, which uses the file spawn.snbt.[4]
Spawn points are stored per template and per compass direction (north, south, east, west), as coordinate triples. For example, the default island has one south spawn, listed in spawnPointReferences.default.south as 6, 3, 5.[4]
The simple_life island has one west spawn, listed in spawnPointReferences.simple_life.west as 23, 9, 17.[4]
The pack leaves defaultOffset at 0.[4]
World layout
Islands are generated in the dimension set by spawnDimension, which is the overworld here. The Overworld, Nether and End all use custom generation, and the End keeps its main island.[5][6]
The pack sets islandDistance to 4,096, down from the mod default of 8,192.[7]
seaHeight is 63, the default. surface is false, so no ground surface is generated by default.[7]
For structures, the pack's structures.json5 sets allow lists. Only the fortress and bastion remnant structures are generated, along with the end spike and end gateway return features.[8]
The pack also turns on preventScheduledTicks, which stops scheduled ticks after an island is generated. The mod ships a block tag for this listing falling blocks such as sand, gravel, anvils, concrete powder and pointed dripstone.[7][9]
Finding a valid spawn
If a template's own spawn isn't valid, the mod searches within radiusToFindValidSpawn blocks, which is 50 in this pack. The mod also has a tag of extra blocks that count as valid spawn ground: glass blocks, leaves and water.[5][10]
Spawn height uses the "set" calculation type in Height.heightCalculationType, with Height.offset at 0. The configured range runs from Height.range.bottom at 64 up to Height.range.top at 319.[5]
Teams
Players are grouped into teams. The mod's messages cover invitations, join requests and visits, and join requests and visits by other players can be toggled on or off. In this pack the team name shows in the tab list on servers through showTeamInTabList. deleteTeamsAutomatically is false. If it were true, an emptied team would be deleted, but its island and blocks would stay where they are.[3][11]
Starting items are handed out when a player joins a team for the first time, because initialInventoryType is "team". The pack's starter inventory list, items, is empty. When a player leaves a team, their items are dropped, since dropItems is true.[12][13]
leaveToOverworld is false, so a player who leaves a team is sent to the spawn island rather than the overworld spawn.[7]
Permissions and teleports
The pack enables these permissions for players: team_create, team_handle_invites, team_handle_join_requests, team_leave, edit_spawns, teleport_to_spawn, teleport_to_visiting_island, teleport_home and teleport_across_dimensions.[14]
Operators can bypass the not-allowed permissions at level 2 (minimumPermissionLevelToBypass), bypass limits such as cooldowns at level 3 (minimumPermissionLevelToBypassLimitations), and run operator commands at level 4 (minimumPermissionLevelToExecuteCommands).[14]
The home, spawn and visit teleports (Teleports.Cooldowns.homeCooldown, Teleports.Cooldowns.spawnCooldown and Teleports.Cooldowns.visitCooldown) each have a cooldown of 3,600 ticks, the same as the mod default.[14]
Teleports.disallowTeleportationDuringFalling and Teleports.negateFallDamage are both false, so teleporting while falling is allowed and fall damage is not negated. Spawns.range is 50, the range from the island centre in which you can add spawns.[14]
Spawn protection
The pack's spawnProtectionEvents list blocks interacting with entities and blocks, mob griefing, explosions, crop growth, bonemeal, mob spawning, spawn eggs, damage and healing.[5]
spawnProtectionRadius is 0 here. Allow lists also let players still use grave and corpse items, blocks and entities from the gravestone, tombstone and corpse mods inside protected areas.[5]
How do you progress through Skyblock Builder?
1 part
This one is short, and that's on purpose. Skyblock Builder is a world-setup mod, not a mod with tiers you climb. The sources I have don't show any tier ladder, so I won't invent one.[15]
What the mod's own data files do show is how it shapes the world you start in. That's the part worth knowing before you begin your run.[15]
What the mod's data sets up
- It ships a Skyblock world preset, which uses the skyblockbuilder:skyblock world type.[15]
- It defines a filtered Overworld biome source preset, skyblockbuilder:filtered_overworld.[16]
- Its own Overworld biome tag simply points at the common Overworld biome tag.[17]
- Its additional valid spawn block tag lists glass blocks, leaves and water.[10]
- Its prevent scheduled tick tag covers falling and powder-type blocks: sand, red sand, suspicious sand, gravel, suspicious gravel, anvils (including chipped and damaged), concrete powder in every colour, the dragon egg and pointed dripstone.[9]
Unverified Quests and crafting recipes for Skyblock Builder in this pack are not shown in the sources here, so none are described.
Which Skyblock Builder config options matter?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide
Skyblock Builder is configured through a handful of files in the skyblockbuilder config folder. Here are the options you're most likely to care about, and how this pack sets them. The one value the sources explicitly show differing from a listed mod default is the island distance. The rest are listed as the pack has them.[18]
World and island layout
- islandDistance is 4,096 in this pack. The mod default is 8,192, so the pack brings team islands closer together.[18]
- seaHeight is 63, which matches the listed default.[18]
- surface is false, so no surface is generated in the dimensions. That matches the default.[18]
- leaveToOverworld is false. A player who leaves a team is not sent to the overworld spawn.[18]
- spawnDimension is minecraft:overworld, so that's where islands are generated.[19]
- The Overworld, Nether and End all use custom generation (Overworld.isCustom, Nether.isCustom and End.isCustom are all true). The End also keeps its main island through End.keepMainIsland.[20]
- structuresToGenerate.elements is an allow list containing only the Nether fortress and the bastion remnant. featuresToGenerate.elements allows only the end spike and the end gateway return.[21]
Island templates
templateList holds seven island templates: simple_life, witch_cottage, default, sanguine sanctuary, steve's staycation, piggy and skyfactory. The first entry is the default template, which here is simple_life. The central spawn island uses the template named spawn. defaultOffset is 0.[22]
Starting inventory and teams
- initialInventoryType is "team", so you get your starting inventory when you join a team for the first time, not when you first join the world.[23]
- The mod's own starter list, items, is empty in this pack.[24]
- clearInitialInventory is false, so items given on spawn by other mods' guide books are not wiped.[23]
- dropItems is true, so your items are dropped when you leave a team.[23]
- deleteTeamsAutomatically is false, so a team isn't deleted automatically when its last player leaves. showTeamInTabList is true, so team names show in the tab list on a server.[25]
Teleports and permissions
Teleports.Cooldowns.homeCooldown, Teleports.Cooldowns.spawnCooldown and Teleports.Cooldowns.visitCooldown are each 3600 ticks, which the config describes as 3 minutes. That is the default. Teleports.negateFallDamage is false, so fall damage is not removed on teleport, and Teleports.disallowTeleportationDuringFalling is false, so teleporting while falling is still allowed.[26]
Operators get access through permission levels. minimumPermissionLevelToBypass is 2, minimumPermissionLevelToBypassLimitations (cooldowns and similar) is 3, and minimumPermissionLevelToExecuteCommands is 4. Spawns.range is 50, the same as the default.[26]
Spawn protection
spawnProtectionRadius is 0 in this pack. The protected event types are listed in spawnProtectionEvents: entity and block interaction, mob griefing, explosions, crop growth, bonemeal, mob spawns, spawn eggs, damage and healing.[19]
The pack also allows a few grave-related interactions inside protected areas. interactionBlocksInSpawnProtection.elements allows the gravestone and tombstone grave blocks, and interactionEntitiesInSpawnProtection.elements allows the corpse entity.[19]
