What is Skyblock Builder?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.6 guide
Skyblock Builder lets you create custom skyblock islands through config. Instead of a fixed starting island, the island is a schematic file that you make yourself, and you also set the possible spawn points for it.[1]
To make that schematic, you use the vanilla structure block or the mod's Structure Saver item.[1]
Starting a world
The mod adds a "Skyblock" world type. On the client, you find it under "More World Options..." when you create a new world. The mod is required on both the server and the client, so everyone who joins needs it installed.[1]
For a server, you set the world type in server.properties. The value depends on the Minecraft version, and the mod's own page lists skyblockbuilder:skyblock for 1.18 and later.[1]
In this pack
The pack ships Skyblock Builder 21.1.36, and it has been in the pack since version 1.0 or earlier. The mod also depends on LibX.[1][2]
How do you get started with Skyblock Builder?
5 parts
Here's the first thing to know: Skyblock Builder is the mod that sets up your starting island, so your first steps in this pack are about choosing a world type and an island rather than crafting something. Let's walk through it in order.[1]
Your first steps
- Create a new world and pick the Skyblock world type under More World Options. The mod needs to be on both the server and the client.[1]
- Choose a template on the screen that asks you to select one. The first entry in the pack's list, A Typical Skyblock, is the default.[3][4]
- Check your inventory. The pack's starter inventory list is empty, so the mod gives you no bonus items.[5]
- Make your own team if you want one. Players can create their own team, and can leave a team or invite others.[6]
Picking a template
The available islands are listed in templates. Here they are:[4]
- A Typical Skyblock, described as a normal island.[4]
- Crossroads.[4]
- Fast AE2 start.[4]
- Floating Castle.[4]
- Just a Tree.[4]
- Tree House.[4]
- Claustrophobia, described as a tiny space.[4]
Two are worth a closer look. Fast AE2 start comes with a little AE2 setup, including an Item and Fluid Storage Cell. Just a Tree is a challenge start, and its description warns that there is only 1 Dirt block.[4]
What the world looks like
The Overworld does not use the default world generation here, and no surface is generated. The Nether and the End do use their default generation, and the End keeps its main island. Islands sit 8,192 blocks apart in the Overworld, set by islandDistance.[7][8]
Each Overworld island is surrounded by a plains biome with a radius of 64, from Overworld.centeredBiomes.[7]
Getting around
Teleporting home, teleporting to spawn and visiting other islands are all allowed. Each has a cooldown of 3,600 ticks, set by options like Teleports.homeCooldown. Players can't modify their own spawn positions, because Spawns.modifySpawns is off.[6]
Making your own island (optional)
If you want to design a template yourself, the Structure Saver item is the mod's tool for it. Shift-right click a block to set a corner, then right click to save the schematic. It can also add the template and its spawns to templates.json5 automatically.[1][3]
How does Skyblock Builder work?
7 parts
Skyblock Builder works on the world itself rather than on machines. It lets you create custom skyblock islands via config: you build a schematic, set possible spawn points, and the mod places an island for each team. Everything below is how the pack has it set up.[1]
World type and island layout
The mod is required on both server and client. On the client it adds a "Skyblock" world type under the "More World Options..." button when you create a world. On a server you set the world type in server.properties, and for 1.18 and later the id is skyblockbuilder:skyblock.[1]
Islands are spaced islandDistance = 8192 blocks apart in the overworld, and the Nether uses 1/8 of that distance. In this pack surface is false, so no surface is generated in the dimensions, and seaHeight is 63. preventScheduledTicks is on, which stops scheduled ticks after an island is generated.[8]
The overworld biome list has allow_list set to false and contains "minecraft:*ocean*". Carver lists for the overworld, Nether and End are empty.[8]
Dimensions and structures
The pack does not use default overworld generation (Overworld.Default is false). Instead each island gets a circle of plains biome with a radius of 64 around it, set in Overworld.centeredBiomes. The Nether and End are different: Nether.Default and End.Default are both true, and the mod's own default for each of those is false. End.mainIsland is true, so the End main island generates as normal.[7]
Structure generation is restricted by allow lists. Only the Nether fortress is allowed as a structure, and the only allowed features are the end spike and the end gateway return.[9]
Island templates
The island you get comes from a template. The first entry in templates is the default, and this pack ships these templates:[4]
- A Typical Skyblock: a normal island, and the default template.[4]
- Crossroads: "All roads lead to the tree."[4]
- Fast AE2 start: a little AE2 setup, with an Item and Fluid Storage Cell included.[4]
- Floating Castle.[4]
- Just a Tree: be careful, there is only 1 Dirt block.[4]
- Tree House.[4]
- Claustrophobia: tiny space, big dreams.[4]
Each template has its own spawn points, given per facing direction (north, east, south, west) as coordinates inside the template, for example spawns.default.south. defaultOffset is 0 in this pack.[4]
Making your own template
You can build a schematic with the vanilla structure block or with the Structure Saver. With the Structure Saver, shift-right click a block to set a corner, and right click to save the schematic. Shift-left click restores the previous position configuration.[1][3]
The saver's screen has a few options:[3]
- Ignore air: every air block in the selected area is left out of the template.[3]
- NBT to SNBT: the generated file is a .snbt file, which you can edit in a standard editor.[3]
- Nether validation: checks whether a nether portal block is included.[3]
- Save to config: the template, including its spawns, is added to the templates.json5 config automatically.[3]
Teams and spawning
Players live in teams. In this pack createOwnTeam is true (the mod default is false), and selfManage is true, so players can leave their team or invite others. Players cannot move their own spawns, because Spawns.modifySpawns is false (the mod default is true).[6]
Commands also report team spawns and team sizes, and let you toggle whether join requests and visits are allowed. Teams are not deleted automatically when the last player leaves (deleteTeamsAutomatically is false), and the team name shows in the tab list (showTeamInTabList is true).[3][10]
Island spawning uses dimension = minecraft:overworld. If a given spawn is not valid, the mod searches within radius = 50. The height type Height.spawnType is "set", which uses the bottom height of the range. That range runs from Height.range.bottom = 64 up to Height.range.top = 319.[11]
Spawn protection covers the events listed in spawnProtectionEvents: entity and block interaction, mob griefing, explosions, crop growth, bonemeal, mob spawning, spawn eggs, damage and healing. spawnProtectionRadius is 0 in this pack. Block, entity and item exceptions are set for grave mods: gravestone:gravestone, tombstone:grave_simple, corpse:corpse and tombstone:grave_key.[11]
Teleports and cooldowns
Home teleports, spawn teleports, visiting other islands and cross-dimension teleports are all enabled. Home, spawn and visit each have a cooldown of 3600 ticks, which the config comments call 3min. Fall damage is not removed on teleport, and teleporting is not blocked while falling.[6]
Leaving a team does not send you to the overworld spawn (leaveToOverworld is false), so you go to the spawn island instead.[8]
Starting items
initialInventoryType is "team", so players get their starting inventory when they join a team for the first time rather than when they first join the world. The pack's items list is empty. Items are dropped when a player leaves a team (dropItems is true), and clearInv is false.[5][12]
Which Skyblock Builder config options matter?
6 parts
Skyblock Builder is configured through the files in the skyblockbuilder config folder. Here are the options you are most likely to notice in play, and what this pack sets them to.[1]
Teams and permissions
- createOwnTeam is true in this pack. The mod default is false, so the pack changed it: players can create their own team.[6]
- Spawns.modifySpawns is false. The mod default is true, so the pack turned it off and players can't modify their spawn positions. Spawns.range stays at the default of 50.[6]
- selfManage is true, so players can leave their team or invite others (same as the default).[6]
- Teleports to home, to spawn and to visit other islands are all enabled. Their cooldowns (Teleports.homeCooldown, Teleports.spawnCooldown and Teleports.visitCooldown) are all 3600 ticks, which is 3 minutes and matches the mod default.[6]
- Teleports.noFallDamage and Teleports.preventWhileFalling are both false, so teleporting still lets you take fall damage and is not blocked while falling.[6]
World and dimensions
- islandDistance is 8192 blocks between islands in the overworld, which is the default. In the nether the distance is 1/8 of that.[8]
- Overworld.Default is false, so the overworld uses the Skyblock generation. Overworld.centeredBiomes puts a plains biome with a radius of 64 around each island.[7]
- Nether.Default and End.Default are both true, so the Nether and the End generate as in a default world. The mod default for both is false, so the pack changed them. End.mainIsland is true, so the End's main island is generated as normal.[7]
- leaveToOverworld is false. When a player leaves a team, they go to the spawn island rather than the overworld spawn.[8]
- seaHeight is 63, the default, and surface is false.[8]
Structures
The structure filters are set as allow lists. generationStructures.elements contains only the Nether fortress. generationFeatures.elements contains only the End spike and the End gateway return feature.[9]
Inventory and starting items
- initialInventoryType is set to team, so players get their starting inventory when they join a team for the first time, not when they first join the world.[12]
- items is an empty list, so this file gives no starter items.[5]
- clearInv is false, so items given on spawn by other mods are not wiped. dropItems is true, so a player's items are dropped when they leave a team.[12]
Team housekeeping and spawn protection
- deleteTeamsAutomatically is false, so an empty team is not removed automatically. showTeamInTabList is true, which puts the team name in front of each player's name in the tab list on a server.[10]
- spawnProtectionRadius is 0 chunks. The protected event types listed in spawnProtectionEvents include explosions, mob griefing, mob spawning and damage.[11]
Island templates
The island choices are defined in templates, and the first entry is the default. In this pack the list is A Typical Skyblock, Crossroads, Fast AE2 start, Floating Castle, Just a Tree, Tree House and Claustrophobia. Fast AE2 start is described as a quick start with a little AE2 setup, including an item and a fluid storage cell.[4]
