What is Skyblock Builder?

2 parts

Skyblock Builder is the mod that lets a pack define its own skyblock island through config. Instead of a hard-coded starting platform, the island is a schematic file. You can build one with the vanilla structure block or the Structure Saver item, then set the possible spawn points for it.[1]

This pack, All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4, ships Skyblock Builder 21.1.36. The mod is licensed under Apache License 2.0.[1][2]

Who it is for

It's for players and pack makers who want a skyblock start, and for anyone who wants to customize the starting island. You'll mostly meet it when you create a world.[1]

Things to know

  • The mod is required on both the server and the client.[1]
  • On the client, it adds a "Skyblock" world type under "More World Options..." when you create a new world.[1]
  • On a server, set the world type in server.properties to skyblockbuilder:custom_skyblock. On 1.18 and newer, the id is skyblockbuilder:skyblock instead.[1]
  • It requires the LibX library mod.[1]

Unverified Where Skyblock Builder fits in the pack's progression is not confirmed. No quests in this pack involve it, it is not on the ATM Star path, and there is no in-jar guidebook to check.

How do you get started with Skyblock Builder?

4 parts

Good news first: Skyblock Builder doesn't ask you to craft anything to get going. It's the mod that builds your starting skyblock island from configuration, so your first steps are about the world and the island, not a crafting chain.[1]

Starting a world

The mod adds a "Skyblock" world type. On the client, you'll find it under "More World Options..." when you create a new world. The mod is required on both the server and the client.[1]

If you're running a server, set the world type to skyblockbuilder:skyblock in server.properties. That's the name used for Minecraft 1.18 and later.[1]

How the island is made

The island is a schematic file with one or more possible spawn points. You can create the schematic with the vanilla structure block or with the mod's Structure Saver item. This matters if you want to change the starting island, because it's all driven by config.[1]

Using the Structure Saver

  1. Shift-right click a block to set a corner of the area you want to save.[3]
  2. Right click to save the schematic.[3]
  3. Made a mistake? Shift-left click to restore the previous position configuration.[3]

The saver also has a few options. You can ignore air blocks in the selected area so they aren't saved to the template, and you can choose whether the selected positions are kept after saving. You can also have the file generated as an editable .snbt file, and you can have the template, including its spawns, added automatically to the templates.json5 config.[3]

Teams

The mod also handles teams. Its messages show that players can be invited to a team, that join requests and visits from other players can be switched on or off, and that you can list a team's spawns. The exact commands aren't covered in the material I have, so I haven't listed them.[3]

Unverified This pack's recipes and quests don't involve this mod, and I have no confirmed information about which island template the pack ships or what its first crafted items should be. For that, check the pack's own quest book and your first world.

How does Skyblock Builder work?

7 parts

Skyblock Builder doesn't add machines, multiblocks, power or fluids. It is a world-generation and team mod that builds custom skyblock islands from a schematic and a set of spawn points, all driven by config. So the core mechanics here are about islands, teams, spawns and teleporting rather than automation.[1]

How islands are made

An island is a schematic file you create with the vanilla structure block or with the mod's Structure Saver item. You then set the possible spawn points for that island. The mod has to be installed on both the server and the client, and it adds a Skyblock world type under the More World Options screen when you create a world.[1]

On a server, set the world type to skyblockbuilder:skyblock (that is the id for 1.18 and newer) in server.properties.[1]

The Structure Saver

  • Shift-right click a block to set a corner. Each saved position is shown in the tooltip.[3]
  • Right click to save the schematic.[3]
  • Shift-left click to restore your previous position configuration.[3]
  • Ignore air: every air block in the selected area is skipped and not saved to the template.[3]
  • Keep positions: if this isn't checked, the selected positions are deleted after saving.[3]
  • NBT to SNBT: the file is saved as a .snbt file, which you can edit in a normal text editor.[3]
  • Save to config: the template, including its spawns, is added automatically to the templates.json5 config.[3]

Dimensions and structures in this pack

The pack uses custom generation in the Overworld, the Nether and the End: Overworld.isCustom, Nether.isCustom and End.isCustom are all true. The End also keeps its main island, because End.keepMainIsland is true.[4]

The pack leaves Overworld.centeredBiomes and Nether.centeredBiomes empty. These options can paint rings of biomes around each island, but none are set here.[4]

Structure generation is restricted by allow lists. featuresToGenerate.allow_list is true, and the feature list (featuresToGenerate.elements) only lets minecraft:end_spike and minecraft:end_gateway_return generate. structuresToGenerate.allow_list is also true, but the entries of that list aren't shown in the sources I have.[5]

Spawns

Islands are generated in the dimension set by spawnDimension, which is minecraft:overworld in this pack. skipCenterIslandCreation is false, so the first island is generated at 0 ~ 0. Turning it on would start with the next coordinate instead, which is useful if the End is used for spawns.[6]

The height calculation type (Height.heightCalculationType) is set to "set", which uses the bottom height of the range setting. Height.offset is 0. If a given spawn isn't valid, the mod searches within the radius from radiusToFindValidSpawn, which is 50 here. The range from the island center for adding possible spawns (Spawns.range) is also 50.[6][7]

Teams

Players are grouped into teams. The mod has commands to list teams, show a team's spawns, and see a team's player count. Players can toggle whether other players may send join requests or visit their island.[3]

In this pack, showTeamInTabList is true, so the team name appears in front of each player's name in the tab list on a server. deleteTeamsAutomatically is false, so a team isn't deleted when its last player leaves.[8]

Starting items follow the team. initialInventoryType is "team", so you receive your starting inventory when you join a team for the first time rather than when you first join the world. dropItems is true, so your items drop when you leave a team. clearInitialInventory is false, so items given on spawn by other mods' guide books are kept. The pack's items list is empty.[9][10]

Teleporting and permissions

Teleporting home, to spawn and to visit other islands each has a cooldown of 3600 ticks (3 minutes). These are Teleports.Cooldowns.homeCooldown, Teleports.Cooldowns.spawnCooldown and Teleports.Cooldowns.visitCooldown.[7]

Teleporting while falling is allowed, because Teleports.disallowTeleportationDuringFalling is false. Fall damage isn't removed on teleport, because Teleports.negateFallDamage is false. The teleportation dimension list is not used as an allow list (Teleports.teleportationDimensions.allow_list is false) and has no entries (Teleports.teleportationDimensions.elements is empty).[7]

Players are granted these permissions by default: team_create, team_handle_invites, team_handle_join_requests, team_leave, edit_spawns, teleport_to_spawn, teleport_to_visiting_island, teleport_home and teleport_across_dimensions. See permissions.[7]

Tip: If you want to use the team commands in a world without any skyblock dimension, forceSkyblockCheck forces the skyblock check. It is false in this pack.[7]

Client options

The pack sets disableExperimentalWarning to true, so you won't get the experimental warning on every new world. You can turn it back on if you want it. allowAprilFools is also true.[11]

Which Skyblock Builder config options matter?

5 parts

Skyblock Builder is configured through a handful of files in the skyblockbuilder config folder. Here are the options you're most likely to care about, and how this pack sets them. The one value the sources explicitly show differing from a listed mod default is the island distance. The rest are listed as the pack has them.[12]

World and island layout

Island templates

templateList holds seven island templates: simple_life, witch_cottage, default, sanguine sanctuary, steve's staycation, piggy and skyfactory. The first entry is the default template, which here is simple_life. The central spawn island uses the template named spawn. defaultOffset is 0.[13]

Starting inventory and teams

Teleports and permissions

Teleports.Cooldowns.homeCooldown, Teleports.Cooldowns.spawnCooldown and Teleports.Cooldowns.visitCooldown are each 3600 ticks, which the config describes as 3 minutes. That is the default. Teleports.negateFallDamage is false, so fall damage is not removed on teleport, and Teleports.disallowTeleportationDuringFalling is false, so teleporting while falling is still allowed.[7]

Operators get access through permission levels. minimumPermissionLevelToBypass is 2, minimumPermissionLevelToBypassLimitations (cooldowns and similar) is 3, and minimumPermissionLevelToExecuteCommands is 4. Spawns.range is 50, the same as the default.[7]

Spawn protection

spawnProtectionRadius is 0 in this pack. The protected event types are listed in spawnProtectionEvents: entity and block interaction, mob griefing, explosions, crop growth, bonemeal, mob spawns, spawn eggs, damage and healing.[6]

The pack also allows a few grave-related interactions inside protected areas. interactionBlocksInSpawnProtection.elements allows the gravestone and tombstone grave blocks, and interactionEntitiesInSpawnProtection.elements allows the corpse entity.[6]

Tip: If you're running a server and want to tweak the layout, island distance in the world config is the first thing to look at. This pack sets it to 4,096 instead of the default 8,192.[12]

What changed in Skyblock Builder between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Skyblock Builder 21.1.36, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier. I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]

Changes by mod version

  • 21.1.36 (the version in this pack): fixed Ender IO fire crafting in team dimensions, and fixed teleports to the overworld ending up in the team nether. It also now takes the structure saver from the player instead of the packet.[14]
  • 21.1.26: added privacy info to the dump screen. Chat messages and the home directory are now redacted in dumps.[15]
  • 21.1.24: switched from JS coremods to Java coremods, and fixed incorrect biome source usage and level.dat issues. The changelog marks this release with an important note.[16]
  • 21.1.20: the fake level dimension key changed from "minecraft:overworld" to "skyblockbuilder:fake". Template rendering also got fixes: the position of a template with a fixed palette, and templates with multiple block palettes. A bug where button focus didn't update properly was fixed too.[17]
  • 21.1.18: team name length is now restricted in the create command.[18]
  • 21.1.17: fixed the /skydev command being usable by everyone.[19]
Tip: If you play with teams, the 21.1.36 fixes matter most for you: Ender IO fire crafting in team dimensions, and overworld teleports that used to land you in the team nether.[14]
