What is Simple Magnets?

3 parts

Simple Magnets adds magnets that pull dropped items and experience toward you, so you stop chasing loot after every block you break. The pack ships version 1.1.12+c of the mod.[1][2]

It's for anyone who is tired of drops landing just out of reach, whether you're mining, clearing an area or fighting mobs. The pack's own quest describes exactly that problem.[1][3]

What you get

  • Basicmagnet: picks up items and experience within a 5 block range of you.[1]
  • Advanced Magnet: the range for items and for experience can each be configured, up to 11 blocks. You can also filter items with a whitelist or blacklist.[1]
  • Demagnetization Coil: stops items from being attracted by magnets, with an area you can adjust up to 3 blocks away.[1]
  • Advanced Demagnetization Coil: does the same job with an area of up to 5 blocks, and it can filter items.[1]

Using a magnet

Hold a magnet and right-click to turn it on, then right-click again to turn it off. Magnets can also be toggled with a key bind, and they work from a Curios slot, so you don't need to keep one in your hand.[1][3]

To open the Advanced Magnet's GUI, hold it and shift-right-click. There you set up the filter slots, choose whitelist or blacklist, and decide whether to match NBT data.[1]

Tip: The pack's quest suggests switching the magnet off near mob farms, so it doesn't pull in things you don't want to collect.[3]

Where it fits in the pack

The mod has its own quest, "Simple Magnets" quest, in the Tips and Tricks chapter. Its task is to obtain the Basicmagnet, and the quest text mentions a 5 block radius and says the magnet can be upgraded to increase its range. That's a good early quality-of-life pickup for any playthrough.[3]

Unverified The sources don't show Simple Magnets as part of the ATM Star quest path, and this guide doesn't claim it is.

How do you get started with Simple Magnets?

4 parts

Simple Magnets is a small mod with a big quality-of-life payoff: magnets that pull dropped items and experience to you, so nothing lands out of reach while you mine or fight. Here is the order I'd make things in.[1][4]

Step 1: Make the Basic Magnet

Start with the Basicmagnet. It's the item the Simple Magnets quest ("Simple Magnets" quest) in the Tips and Tricks chapter asks for. Once it's on, it pulls dropped items and blocks within a 5 block radius straight to you.[1][3]

Using it

  1. Hold the magnet and right-click to turn it on. Items and blocks that drop nearby will now come to you.[1][3]
  2. Equip it in a Curios slot if you want it to keep working without holding it.[1][3]
  3. Right-click with it again to turn it off. The quest suggests doing this near mob farms.[3]
Tip: Magnets can also be toggled with a key bind. That's handy once the magnet lives in your Curios slot.[1]

Step 2: Upgrade to the Advanced Magnet

When 5 blocks isn't enough, craft the Advancedmagnet. The quest notes the magnet can be upgraded to increase the range. The Advanced Magnet picks up items and experience, and you can filter what it grabs. The mod's project page lists a maximum range of 11 blocks and says item and experience ranges can be set separately.[1][3][4][5]

To open its menu, hold it and Shift-right-click. Put an item in a filter slot, then choose whitelist or blacklist and whether it should match NBT data.[1]

Step 3: Demagnetization Coils (optional)

Sometimes you don't want a magnet grabbing everything, for example near mob farms. The Basic Demagnetization Coil stops items near it from being attracted by magnets, and you can set its area up to 3 blocks away.[1][3][4][5]

How does Simple Magnets work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.11 guide

Simple Magnets keeps things easy: there are no multiblocks, no power and no fluids to deal with. The mod adds magnets that pull items and experience toward you, plus coils that stop magnets from attracting items in an area.[1][6]

Magnets

The Basicmagnet picks up items and experience within a range of 5 blocks around you, according to the mod's project page. It has no filter.[1][6]

The Advancedmagnet does the same job with a configurable range of up to 11 blocks. You can set the item range and the experience range separately, and you can filter items with a whitelist or a blacklist.[1][6]

The Advanced Magnet is an upgrade of the Basic Magnet.

Unverified The pack ships no config files for this mod that we could check, so we can't confirm whether the 5 and 11 block ranges are changed here. The numbers above are the mod's own figures.

Using a magnet

  1. To turn a magnet on or off, select it in your hotbar and right-click with it.[1]
  2. To open the Advanced Magnet's GUI, select it in your hotbar and Shift-right-click.[1]

The project page also says magnets work in Baubles or Curios slots and can be toggled with a key bind.[1]

Unverified We haven't confirmed which accessory slot mod, if any, this pack uses for magnets, or what the default key bind is.

Filtering items

Filtering is done in the Advanced Magnet's GUI. Follow these steps:[1]

  1. Open the Advanced Magnet's GUI.[1]
  2. Click one of the filter slots while holding the item you want to filter.[1]
  3. Switch the filter between whitelist and blacklist.[1]
  4. Choose whether the filter should match NBT data or not.[1]

Demagnetization coils

Coils do the opposite of magnets. The Basic Demagnetization Coil prevents items from being attracted by magnets, and you can adjust its effective area up to 3 blocks away.[1][6]

The Advanced Demagnetization Coil works the same way but reaches up to 5 blocks away, and its items can be filtered.[1][6]

  1. To open a coil's GUI, look at the placed coil with an empty hand and right-click it.[1]

Tip: The coil's area is adjustable, so set it only as large as you need. That way the magnets keep working everywhere else.[1]

How do you progress through Simple Magnets?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 5.5 guide

Simple Magnets has a short, clean progression in this pack: a basic magnet to start, an advanced magnet as the upgrade, and a matching pair of demagnetization coils. Every item uses the mod's own crafting recipes, so there are no pack-specific changes to plan around.[7]

Step one: the Basic Magnet

Your starting point is the Basicmagnet. It's the item the pack's quests ask for, so crafting it is how you complete the "Simple Magnets" quest quest in the Tips and Tricks chapter.[8]

Recipe id: simplemagnets:basicmagnet

Using it is simple. Right-click while holding the magnet to switch it on, and every dropped item and block within a 5 block radius flies straight to you. No more watching drops tumble just out of reach while you're mining or chopping![8]

  • Right-click with the magnet to turn it on, and right-click again to turn it off.[8]
  • You can equip the magnet in a Curios slot, so it keeps working without taking up your hand.[8]
  • The quest itself notes that the magnet can be upgraded to increase its range.[8]
Tip: Switch your magnet off when you're working near mob farms. The quest specifically calls out mob farms as the place where you'll probably want to stop pulling in every drop.[8]

Step two: the Advanced Magnet

The next tier is the Advancedmagnet. Its recipe takes your basic magnet as one of the ingredients, so you're upgrading the magnet you already have rather than building a second one from scratch. Gather your materials before you commit your basic magnet to the crafting grid.[7]

Unverified The exact range of the Advanced Magnet, and which settings it can adjust, could not be confirmed from the pack's files.

Demagnetization coils

Alongside the magnets, the mod has two demagnetization coils that follow the same two-tier pattern. You craft the Basic Demagnetization Coil first, and its recipe then feeds into the Advanced Demagnetization Coil.[7]

Unverified What the demagnetization coils do in practice, their range, and how they interact with your magnet are not described in the pack's quests or files, and no quest covers them.

Suggested order

  1. Craft the Basic Magnet and turn in the Simple Magnets quest in the Tips and Tricks chapter.[7][8]
  2. Put the magnet in a Curios slot so it works hands-free while you explore and mine.[8]
  3. When you're ready for more range, craft the Advanced Magnet using your Basic Magnet.[7][8]
  4. If you need them, craft the Basic Demagnetization Coil and then upgrade it into the Advanced Demagnetization Coil.[7]

How does Simple Magnets work with other mods?

1 part

The one recipe link between Simple Magnets and another mod in this pack is with Mekanism. The pack adds a shaped crafting recipe for Module Magnetic Attraction Unit that uses the Basicmagnet as one of its inputs. So you need to craft a Basic Magnet before you can make that Mekanism module.[5]

Where the quest book puts the magnet

The quest "Simple Magnets" quest sits in the Tips and Tricks chapter, and its task is to have the Basic Magnet. It tells you to right click with the magnet to turn it on, that it pulls in dropped items and blocks within a 5 block radius, and that you can equip it in your Curios slots. It also mentions that the magnet can be upgraded to increase its range.[3]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Simple Magnets?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 5.5 guide

This mod shows up in one quest in the pack, found in the Tips and Tricks chapter. Since it's the only quest for this mod, there's no order to worry about. Grab it whenever you're ready for your drops to come to you.[8]

Tips and Tricks

The "Simple Magnets" quest quest has a single task: get a Basicmagnet. It's aimed at a common annoyance, when you break something and the blocks land just out of reach.[8]

  • Right-click while holding the magnet to turn it on.[8]
  • While it's on, dropped items and blocks within a 5 block radius are pulled to you.[8]
  • You can equip the magnet in a Curios slot and keep using it without holding it.[8]
  • Right-click with it again to switch it off.[8]
  • You can upgrade the magnet to increase its range.[8]
Tip: Switch the magnet off near mob farms. The quest itself points out that this is where you'll most likely want it disabled.[8]

Unverified The sources don't say how the magnet is upgraded, what range upgrades give you, or what reward the quest hands out.

Which Simple Magnets config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.11 guide

The pack's Simple Magnets config values aren't something I can show you here, so this section sticks to what the mod's project page says about ranges and filters. Treat these as the mod's own figures, not confirmed pack settings.[1]

The Basic Magnet picks up items and experience within 5 blocks. The Advanced Magnet has a configurable range of up to 11 blocks, and you can set the item range and the experience range separately.[1]

The Demagnetization Coil can be adjusted up to 3 blocks away, and the Advanced Demagnetization Coil up to 5 blocks. The Advanced Demagnetization Coil can filter items. The Advanced Magnet can filter with a whitelist or blacklist, and you can choose whether it matches NBT data or not.[1]

Tip: The ranges and filters for the Advanced Magnet are set in its GUI. Select the magnet in your hotbar and Shift-Right-Click to open it.[1]

Unverified Whether this pack changes any Simple Magnets values from the mod defaults, such as maximum ranges or other limits, could not be confirmed. No config files for this mod were available, so check the in-game GUI to see what you actually get.

What changed in Simple Magnets between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.2.1 includes Simple Magnets 1.1.12+c (file simplemagnets-1.1.12c-neoforge-mc1.21.jar). The mod was first included in To the Sky 1.0 or earlier, so it has been in the pack from the start.[2]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so this section only covers the mod's own changelog.

Mod changelog

Here is what changed from the first Minecraft 1.21 release up to the version in your pack, newest first.[9]

  • 1.1.12c: fixed the Curios integration. This is the version in the pack.[2][9]
  • 1.1.12b: fixed a crash when changing advanced magnet options.[9]
  • 1.1.12a: fixed the advanced magnet data component not being comparable.[9]
  • 1.1.12: fixed demagnetization coil option changes not always getting saved.[9]
  • 1.1.11b: fixed magnets not going in Curios slots.[9]
  • 1.1.11a: fixed a crash on startup.[9]
  • 1.1.11: initial release of Simple Magnets for Minecraft 1.21.[9]

The whole history is bug fixes, mostly around Curios slots and saving or comparing advanced magnet settings. Since your pack has 1.1.12c, all of these fixes are already in.[2][9]
