What is In Control!?

2 parts

In Control! gives you full control over where mobs are allowed to spawn. It works on a rule system, and the rule files live in the config/incontrol folder.[1]

This pack includes In Control! 1.21-10.2.6.[2]

The rule files

The project page describes these rule files. Its list is written as of version 3.5.1, and this pack uses a newer release, so treat it as a guide to what the mod can do rather than an exact file listing for the pack.[1][2]

  • spawn.json: block the spawning of certain creatures under certain conditions. When a spawn is allowed, you can also alter some properties of the mob, such as its maximum health.[1]
  • summonaid.json: structured like spawn.json, but only used when zombies are summoned for aid.[1]
  • spawner.json (1.16 or later): add spawn rules under certain conditions.[1]
  • loot.json: control what mobs drop when they are killed, based on various criteria.[1]
  • experience.json: control how much experience you get from killing mobs, based on various criteria.[1]

Good to know

The mod is MIT licensed, and its author also makes a companion mod called Fx Control!. The author's In Control! wiki has more in-depth documentation on writing rules.[1]

How do you get started with In Control!?

2 parts

In Control! is a little different from most mods in the pack: it is about rules, not machines. It gives you full control over where mobs are allowed to spawn, and it works through a rule system. The rule files live in the config/incontrol folder.[1]

So your first steps here are about reading and editing a file, not crafting items.[1]

First steps

  1. Start with the spawn rules. The spawn.json file is where you block spawning of certain creatures under certain conditions. When a spawn is allowed, it can also change some properties of the mob, like maximum health.[1]
  2. Look at what the pack already sets in . Every rule in it has the result "deny".[3]
  3. Check which mobs are covered. Most rules have a mincount of 15: minecraft:zombie, minecraft:skeleton, minecraft:creeper, minecraft:spider, minecraft:enderman, minecraft:cave_spider and minecraft:drowned, plus irons_spellbooks:necromancer, creeperoverhaul:cave_creeper and creeperoverhaul:dripstone_creeper. The minecraft:bat rule has a mincount of 5.[3]
  4. When you want to change the pack's behaviour, edit or add rules in that same format, one entry per mob.[1][3]

The other rule files

The mod has more rule files than spawn.json. The summonaid.json file is structured like spawn.json but is only used when zombies are summoned for aid. The loot.json file controls what mobs drop when they are killed, and experience.json controls how much experience you get from kills. A spawner.json file adds spawn rules under certain conditions on 1.16 or later.[1]

Tip: Only spawn.json is shown as a pack-set file in the sources I have. If you want to change loot or experience, check the config/incontrol folder in your own instance first, because I can't confirm what the pack ships for those.[1][3]

Unverified What the mincount value does in each rule is not explained in the sources for this guide, so check the In Control! documentation before changing it.

Unverified No in-pack recipes or items for In Control! were found, so there is no crafting step to cover here.

How does In Control! work?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

In Control! doesn't add machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item handling. It is a mob spawn control mod, so the only system to learn here is its rule system. It lets you decide where mobs are allowed to spawn, and the rules are stored in files in the config/incontrol folder.[1]

The rule files

Each rule file controls a different part of mob behavior. These are the files the mod's project page describes:[1]

  • spawn.json blocks spawning of certain creatures under certain conditions. When a spawn is allowed, it can also change some properties of the mob, such as maximum health.[1]
  • summonaid.json is structured like spawn.json, but it only applies when zombies are summoned for aid.[1]
  • potentialspawn.json is marked as 1.12 only. It removes and adds spawn rules, and it is applied before spawn.json.[1]
  • spawner.json is marked as 1.16 or later. It adds spawn rules under certain conditions.[1]
  • loot.json controls what mobs drop when they are killed, based on various criteria.[1]
  • experience.json controls how much experience you get from killing mobs, based on various criteria.[1]

What this pack configures

The only In Control! file this pack provides is . Every rule in it has the result deny, and each one has a mincount value. I can't confirm any other In Control! rule file from the pack's sources, so I won't describe loot or experience changes.[4]

Bats have a mincount of 5. These mobs all have a mincount of 15:[4]

  • minecraft:zombie, minecraft:skeleton, minecraft:creeper and minecraft:spider[4]
  • minecraft:enderman, minecraft:cave_spider and minecraft:drowned[4]
  • irons_spellbooks:necromancer[4]
  • creeperoverhaul:cave_creeper and creeperoverhaul:dripstone_creeper[4]
Tip: The mod has its own wiki with more detailed documentation of the rule system. The pack's sources don't reproduce it, so check it if you want to write your own rules.[1]

How do you progress through In Control!?

There is no progression path or tier breakdown for In Control! that I can confirm in this pack. The quests I can see are in the Create chapter of the quest book, which has 90 quests and starts from "Create" quest. None of the quests shown there mention In Control!, so I won't invent steps or tiers for it.[5]

13 of the Create chapter's quests are not shown to me, so for those you'll need to check the quest book itself.[5]

Unverified No in-pack recipes for In Control! items and no tier structure for the mod could be confirmed, so none are listed here.

How does In Control! work with other mods?

There's not much to show here, and I'd rather tell you that than make something up. In Control! works through rule files in the config/incontrol folder, which control mob spawns, loot and experience.[1]

The quests I can see in the Create chapter ("Blaze Burner" quest, "Wrench" quest, "Chute" quest, the train quests like "Constructing Trains" quest and so on) are all about Create's own machines and items. None of them involve In Control!. The other 78 quests in that chapter are in the quest book, so check there if you want to be thorough.[5]

The mod's project page names Fx Control! as a companion mod. That's a recommendation from the mod author, and it doesn't tell us whether the pack includes it.[1]

Unverified No in-pack recipe or quest that I can see links In Control! to another mod, so any cross-mod behaviour in this pack is unconfirmed.

Which All the Mons quests use In Control!?

I looked through the quest text I have for the pack, and none of it asks you for an item from this mod. The Create chapter lists its tasks in full, and every one that names an item points at Create items or plain vanilla ones. The Mekanism chapter shows only a handful of quests, and those ask for Mekanism items such as "Osmium" quest and "Dyes and Pigments" quest.[5][6]

Most of the Mekanism chapter's quests are not shown in the text I was given. They are in the quest book, but I can't tell you what they say, so I won't guess whether any of them mention this mod.[6]

So I can't point you to a quest chapter that covers this mod, and there is no order to follow for it. If you find one in your own quest book, tell me and I'll add it here.[5][6]

Which In Control! config options matter?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

In Control! is a rule-based mod that decides where mobs are allowed to spawn. Its rule files normally live in the config/incontrol folder. In this pack the spawn rules are shipped through , and that file is the one most players will want to look at.[1][4]

What the pack's spawn rules do

The spawn rules file is a list of rules. Every rule in this pack names a mob, sets the result to deny, and gives a mincount value. So the pack uses In Control! to block certain mob spawns, not to change mob stats.[1][4]

  • Bats have a deny rule with a mincount of 5.[4]
  • These vanilla mobs have a deny rule with a mincount of 15: zombie, skeleton, creeper, spider, cave spider, enderman and drowned.[4]
  • Some modded mobs also have a deny rule with a mincount of 15: the irons_spellbooks necromancer, plus the creeperoverhaul cave creeper and dripstone creeper.[4]
Tip: Bats are the only mob in this file with a lower mincount (5) than the rest (15). If you are tweaking the file, start with the bat rule and compare it to the others.[4]

If you want to dig deeper, the mod's project page points to the In Control! documentation for the full rule syntax. It also says that spawn.json can alter properties like maximum health on mobs that are allowed to spawn. This pack's file doesn't use that feature.[1][4]
