What is Enchantment Descriptions?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Enchantment Descriptions is a lightweight, client-side mod that adds a short description of each enchantment to the tooltip of an enchanted book. Hover over a book and you can see what the enchantment does without looking it up.[1]

It supports all the vanilla enchantments in over 13 languages, and most modded enchantments are supported too.[1]

It's for anyone who wants to know what a book does before using it or spending resources on it. It's a quality-of-life tool, so there's nothing to craft and nothing to unlock.[1]

In this pack

This pack version ships Enchantment Descriptions 21.1.11, using the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. It was first included in an earlier pack release, 2.25 or before.[2]

How do you get started with Enchantment Descriptions?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there is nothing to craft here. Enchantment Descriptions is a light weight, client-side mod that adds a description of an enchantment to the tooltip of an enchanted book. You don't need to make any items to use it.[1]

What to do first

  1. Get hold of an enchanted book, however you normally find them in the pack.[1]
  2. Look at its tooltip. The description of the enchantment appears there, so you can see what it does before you use it.[1]

Vanilla enchantments are covered, and most modded enchantments are too. The mod's language file has short descriptions for enchantments added by other mods. For example, Leeching from Dungeons Enchantments is described as: "Defeating enemies will heal the user." Another is Digging from Create Stuff and Additions, described as: "Allows the drill to dig a bigger hole."[1][3]

Tip: Read the description before you spend a book on a piece of gear. Some modded enchantments have drawbacks. Pain Cycle, for instance, hurts the user, and Hungry makes the wearer constantly lose hunger and saturation points.[3]

Unverified This pack has no quests for this mod, and no recipes produce its items, so there is no crafting or quest order to follow. Whether the pack changes any of the mod's settings is unconfirmed.

How does Enchantment Descriptions work?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Enchantment Descriptions is a different kind of mod from the machine-heavy ones in the pack. It's a lightweight, client-side mod that adds a description of each enchantment to the tooltip of enchanted books. That's the whole system, so this section is short.[1]

What it covers

The mod supports all vanilla enchantments, in over 13 languages, and most modded enchantments too.[1]

The descriptions come from language entries keyed per enchantment, for example enchantment.minecraft.aqua_affinity.desc. That entry reads "Increases mining speed while underwater."[3]

In this pack, entries also exist for enchantments from other mods. A few examples from the language file: Ambush from Dungeons Enchantments (extra damage to enemies that are not looking at you), Rush (it temporarily increases speed after the user is hurt), Catalysis from Deeper and Darker (killing mobs will spread sculk nearby) and Double Jump from the grapple mod (allows the user to jump twice). The list here is only a sample.[3]

How the pack configures it

The pack's settings live in config/enchdesc.json. The mod is switched on through enabled.value, which is true. The config's own comments explain each option, for example that the text of the prefix option will be added to the start of each description.[4]

The pack changes one important default. only_on_books.value is true in this pack, while the mod's default is false. The config comment says that when it is enabled, descriptions will only be displayed when looking at an enchanted book.[4]

  • only_in_enchanting_table.value is false, the same as the default. The config comment says that when it is enabled, descriptions will only be displayed inside the enchanting table GUI.[4]
  • require_keybind.value is false, the same as the default. The config comment says that when it is enabled, descriptions will only be displayed when the user holds the shift key.[4]
  • activate_text.value.color is dark_gray and its translation key is enchdesc.activate.message. The config comment says this text will be displayed when the keybind option is enabled and the user has not held the keybind.[4]
  • style.value.color is dark_gray, the same as the default. The config comment says the style option controls the color, format, font and other visual properties of the description.[4]
  • prefix.value and suffix.value are both empty, the same as the defaults. According to the config comments, prefix text will be added to the start of each description, and suffix text to the end.[4]
Tip: The pack sets only_on_books to true, while the mod's default is false. The config comment says that when it is enabled, descriptions will only be displayed when looking at an enchanted book. That option is the pack-specific change to look at if descriptions don't appear on other items.[4]

Which Enchantment Descriptions config options matter?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Enchantment Descriptions is a light weight, client-side mod that adds enchantment descriptions to the tooltips of enchanted books. Everything below lives in config/enchdesc.json, and almost all of it is untouched from the mod's defaults.[1][4]

The one value the pack changed

The pack sets only_on_books.value to true, while the mod default is false. With it on, descriptions only appear when you look at an enchanted book.[4]

Tip: If you would rather have the mod's default behavior back, set only_on_books.value to false.[4]

Options left at the mod default

  • enabled.value is true, so the mod and its features are on.[4]
  • only_in_enchanting_table.value is false. If you turn it on, descriptions only show inside the enchanting table GUI.[4]
  • require_keybind.value is false, so you don't need to hold anything to see descriptions. If you enable it, descriptions only show while you hold the shift key.[4]
  • activate_text.value.translate is enchdesc.activate.message and its color is dark_gray. This is the hint shown when the keybind option is enabled and you aren't holding the key, so you won't see it in this pack as it is.[4]
  • style.value.color is dark_gray. The style option controls the color, format, font, and other visual properties of the description text.[4]
  • prefix.value and suffix.value are both empty. You can use them to add indents or other decorators before or after each description.[4]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as enchdesc, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
