What is AppleSkin?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide
AppleSkin is a small quality-of-life mod that makes Minecraft's food system visible. It adds various food-related HUD improvements, so you can see exactly what's going on with your hunger instead of guessing.[1]
The key thing to know is that AppleSkin doesn't add or change any mechanics. It only shows you information about mechanics that are normally invisible, like saturation and exhaustion. Your food works exactly the same as before, you just get to see the numbers.[1]
What it shows you
- Food value information in item tooltips, so you can compare foods before you eat them.[1]
- A visualization of your saturation and exhaustion right on the HUD.[1]
- A preview of how much hunger and saturation a food will restore while you're holding it.[1]
- A preview of how much health a food will restore while you're holding it.[1]
- Hunger, saturation and exhaustion info added to the debug overlay (F3).[1]
Who it's for
Honestly, pretty much everyone. Because it's purely informational, you get the benefit from your very first day in the world. It's especially handy when you're choosing which food to carry, or when you want to know how long your saturation will last before your hunger bar starts dropping.[1]
In this pack
This pack ships AppleSkin version 3.0.5+mc1.21. It's mostly a client-side mod, but it also needs to be on the server to display accurate saturation and exhaustion values, because it syncs those values to your client. When you play the pack on a server running the same mod list, the numbers you see should be accurate.[1][2]
How do you get started with AppleSkin?
1 part
Same as in the All the Mods 10 3.2 guide
Good news: getting started with AppleSkin takes zero effort. There's nothing to craft, no recipe to hunt down and no setup. It's an information mod that adds food-related improvements to your HUD and tooltips, so it starts working the moment you load into the world.[1]
AppleSkin doesn't add or change any hunger mechanics. It shows you things Minecraft already tracks but normally keeps hidden, like saturation and exhaustion. Your food works exactly as it would without the mod; you just get to see what's going on.[1]
What to look at first
- Hover over any food in your inventory. The tooltip now shows its food value, so you can compare snacks before you eat them.[1]
- Check your hunger bar. AppleSkin adds a visualization of your saturation and exhaustion there, so you can see how close you are to losing another hunger point.[1]
- Hold a piece of food in your hand. The HUD previews how much hunger and saturation it would restore, so you know whether eating it now is worth it.[1]
- Keep an eye on your hearts while holding food, too. The mod also previews the health that food could restore.[1]
- If you want exact numbers, open the debug overlay with F3. AppleSkin adds hunger, saturation and exhaustion info there.[1]
Unverified The sources don't confirm whether this pack's server files include AppleSkin, or whether the pack changes any of its display settings.
How does AppleSkin work?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 3.2 guide
If you came here looking for machines, multiblocks or power systems, AppleSkin doesn't have any. It's an information mod: it shows you food and hunger details that Minecraft normally tracks behind the scenes. It doesn't add or change any mechanics, so eating, hunger and healing work exactly as they do in vanilla.[1]
What it shows you
Everything AppleSkin does is about turning invisible food numbers into something you can see, either on your HUD or in tooltips.[1]
- Food tooltips show food value information, so you can compare foods before eating them.[1]
- Your HUD shows saturation and exhaustion, two hidden values that affect how quickly your hunger bar drains.[1]
- While you hold food, your HUD previews how much hunger and saturation eating it would restore.[1]
- While you hold food, your HUD also previews how much health it could restore.[1]
- The F3 debug overlay gets extra lines for hunger, saturation and exhaustion.[1]
Client and server
AppleSkin is mostly client-side, but it also needs to be on the server to show accurate saturation and exhaustion values. The server sends those values to your client, because the game normally doesn't share them with you.[1]
Unverified The sources don't say how the pack configures AppleSkin's overlays, or whether any of them can be turned off, so those details aren't covered here.
Which AppleSkin config options matter?
3 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
The options for AppleSkin in this pack are in config/appleskin-client.toml, all under the client section. They set which extra food info the mod draws on your screen, and the values below are the ones this pack sets.[3]
HUD overlays
- client.showFoodValuesHudOverlay is true in this pack. It shows the hunger (and saturation, if client.showSaturationHudOverlay is true) that would be restored by the food you are currently holding.[3]
- client.showFoodValuesHudOverlayWhenOffhand is true, which enables the hunger, saturation and health overlays for food you are currently holding in your off-hand.[3]
- client.showSaturationHudOverlay is true, which shows the saturation level you currently have, overlaid on the hunger bar.[3]
- client.showFoodHealthHudOverlay is true, which shows the estimated health that the food you are currently holding would restore, on the health bar.[1][3]
- client.showFoodExhaustionHudUnderlay is true, which shows the food exhaustion you currently have as a progress bar behind the hunger bars.[3]
- client.showVanillaAnimationsOverlay is true, so the health and hunger overlay shakes to match Minecraft's icon animations.[3]
Tooltips and debug info
- client.showFoodValuesInTooltip is true, which shows the hunger and saturation values of food in its tooltip while SHIFT is held.[3]
- client.showFoodValuesInTooltipAlways is also true, so those values show automatically, without needing to hold SHIFT. If you find the tooltips cluttered, this is the option to turn off.[3]
- client.showFoodStatsInDebugOverlay is true, which adds a line to the F3 debug overlay that shows your hunger, saturation and exhaustion level as they currently are.[3]
Flash alpha
client.maxHudOverlayFlashAlpha is the alpha value of the flashing icons at their most visible point, from 0.0 (fully transparent) to 1.0 (fully opaque). The pack uses 0.65, which is the same as the mod default, so the pack hasn't changed it.[3]
What changed in AppleSkin between versions?
1 part
The pack ships AppleSkin 2.5.1 for Minecraft 1.20.1 (the Forge build). It has been in Project Infinity since 0.0.45.4 or earlier, so this version is the one you get in 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2.[4]
The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so there is nothing pack-specific to report here. The only notable changes come from the mod's own changelog for 2.5.1.[4]
