What is Universal Enchants?
2 parts
Universal Enchants is all about letting enchantments work on far more gear. It expands Minecraft's enchantment system by allowing enchantments on more items, removing unnecessary compatibility restrictions, and improving several vanilla enchantments. Think Infinity on a crossbow, or Looting on a trident.[1]
What you can do with it
- Put Power, Punch, Infinity, Flame and Looting on crossbows, or Multishot, Piercing, Quick Charge and Looting on bows.[1]
- Use enchantments such as Looting, Knockback, Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods and Impaling on tridents.[1]
- Combine popular pairs like Infinity + Mending and Multishot + Piercing, which are compatible by default.[1]
- Infinity no longer needs a spare arrow, Looting and Fortune boost experience drops, and Feather Falling prevents farmland trampling.[1]
- Optionally let Sharpness stack with Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Impaling or Breach, and let Protection combine with Fire, Blast or Projectile Protection on the same equipment.[1]
In this pack
The pack ships Universal Enchants 8.0.0, the 1.20.1 Forge build. It was first included in an early pack version, 0.0.45.4 or earlier, and is still there in this one.[2]
Every compatibility change and enchantment adjustment can be enabled, disabled or customized individually. The mod ships several optional data packs that widen which items an enchantment can go on, and you can toggle them from the Data Packs screen when creating a world, or with the /datapack command in an existing world or on a server. The mod has to be installed on both the client and the server.[1]
Unverified The project page also lists features for maces, wolf armor and nautilus armor. Whether each of these applies to the 1.20.1 build in this pack, and whether the pack changes any of the mod's defaults, is not confirmed by the sources.
How do you get started with Universal Enchants?
2 parts
Universal Enchants changes which items your enchantments can go on, so your first steps are about choosing gear and enchanting it.[1]
Unverified The sources I was given for this guide include no quests and no crafting recipes for this mod, so I can't show you a first item to craft.
What the mod does
The mod lets enchantments work on more tools and weapons, removes some needless compatibility limits, and improves a few vanilla enchantments. Its examples are Infinity on crossbows, Looting on tridents and protection enchantments on animal armor.[1]
In this pack, each enchantment has its own config file. It holds an items list of what the enchantment can go on and an incompatible list of enchantments it can't be combined with.[3]
Good first things to try
- Start with ranged gear. In this pack, Infinity is set for bows, the bow tome and crossbows. Power is set for bows, crossbows and the bow tome, plus two Cataclysm weapons, the cursed bow and Wrath of the Desert.[3][4]
- Watch the Infinity conflict. In this pack, Infinity is listed as incompatible with the Apotheosis Endless Quiver enchantment, so you can't put both on the same item.[3][5]
- Move on to armor. The Protection config covers armor, the Apotheosis boots, chestplate, helmet and leggings tomes, the mutant skeleton skull and horse armor, and its incompatible list is empty.[6]
- Check your fishing rod. Lure and Luck of the Sea are both set for fishing rods and the fishing tome. In this pack, Luck of the Sea is listed as incompatible with Silk Touch.[7][8]
- If you find a trident, plan its enchants first. Channeling is incompatible with Riptide here, and Riptide is also incompatible with Loyalty.[9][10]
The mod also ships optional data packs that control which items existing enchantments apply to. You manage them from the Data Packs screen when creating a world, or with the /datapack command in an existing world.[1]
How does Universal Enchants work?
6 parts
Universal Enchants is not a machine mod. There is no power, fluid, item automation or multiblock to build. It expands Minecraft's enchantment system: it lets enchantments work on more items, removes unnecessary restrictions between enchantments, and tweaks several vanilla enchantments. So "core mechanics" here comes down to which items can take an enchantment, and which enchantments can share an item.[1]
One config file per enchantment
In this pack, every enchantment has its own small JSON file under the universalenchants config folder, sorted into a subfolder by the mod the enchantment comes from (minecraft, cyclic, apotheosis, enderio and so on). Each file has these keys: items (what it can go on), incompatible (what it can't be combined with) and schemaVersion, which is set to 2 in the files shown.[4]
Power is a good example. Its item list covers the bow and crossbow, plus Tome of the Archers, Cursed Bow and Wrath of the Desert. That is the "use them on all tools and weapons" idea in action: modded gear and Apotheosis tomes get added right next to the vanilla items.[1][4]
Where enchantments go
The item lists reach well beyond vanilla. A few examples from the pack's files:[12][13][14]
- Silk Touch lists ME Annihilation Plane, Infinity Drill, Infinity Saw, Flux Drill, Flux Saw and Block and Chain, among others.[12]
- Unbreaking lists anvils, Infinity Backpack, Infinity Launcher and shears such as Supremium Shears.[13]
- Quick Charge covers the crossbow, trident and bow, so it can go on any of those.[14]
- Armor enchantments such as Soul Speed, Feather Falling and Protection also list a horse armor entry, matching the mod's goal of letting animal armor use armor enchantments.[1][6][15][16]
Apotheosis tomes appear all over these lists, for example Tome of Boots, Tome of the Miners and Tome of the Others. Many Apotheosis enchantments are also listed here: Splitting and Obliteration for anvils, Reflective for shields, Chromatic and Exploitation for shears, and Tempting for hoes.[11][17][18][19][20][21][22]
Which enchantments can be combined
The incompatible list is the other half. A pair is usually blocked in both files, so each side names the other. Infinity and Apotheosis's Endless Quiver exclude each other, as do Depth Strider and Frost Walker. Riptide excludes Loyalty and Channeling, and those each list Riptide.[3][5][9][10][23][24][25]
Thorns is blocked with Last Stand, Icy Thorns, and the Twilight Forest Fire React and Chill Aura enchantments. Silk Touch is blocked with Luck of the Sea, Looting, Fortune, and the Cyclic and Ender IO auto smelt enchantments, plus Ender IO's XP Boost.[12][26]
Mending is blocked with Last Stand, Soul Harden and Life Mending. It does not list Infinity, which fits the mod's "Infinity + Mending" compatibility by default.[1][27]
Most of the enchantment files shown also list endlessbiomes:vwooping as incompatible. Protection, Binding Curse and Mending are among the ones that don't.[4][6][27][28]
Protection stacking in this pack
The mod can optionally let Protection combine with Fire, Blast and Projectile Protection. In this pack, incompatible is an empty list, so Protection is not blocked by any of them. Fire, Blast and Projectile Protection still exclude one another.[1][6][29][30][31]
The /enchant command
The common config has options for the /enchant command, and both are on in this pack. enchant_command.fix_enchant_command lets the command override and remove existing levels (set the level to 0 to remove one) and makes enchanting books work through the command. enchant_command.remove_max_level_limit lifts the level cap so any enchantment can be applied at a level from 1 to 255.[32]
Changes to vanilla enchantments
The mod's own page lists some quality-of-life changes: Infinity no longer needs a spare arrow, Looting and Fortune give extra experience, Feather Falling stops farmland trampling, and Multishot benefits from removed projectile immunity. Every change can be configured individually.[1]
Unverified The pack's exact settings for enchantments such as Fortune and Looting are in config/universalenchants/minecraft/fortune.json and config/universalenchants/minecraft/looting.json, and server-side options are in config/universalenchants-server.toml. The sources here do not show those files, so their values are not covered.
The mod also ships optional data packs that widen what enchantments can be applied to and enable new combinations. You can switch them from the Data Packs screen when creating a world, or with the /datapack command in existing worlds and on servers.[1]
Which Universal Enchants config options matter?
2 parts
Universal Enchants in this pack is controlled by two small TOML files with a handful of switches, plus one little JSON file per enchantment. The TOML files are quick to read. The JSON files are where the pack decides which enchantments can combine and which items can take them.[3][32][33]
Command and display options
- enchant_command.fix_enchant_command is true in this pack. It lets the /enchant command override existing enchantment levels and remove them by setting the level to 0, and it makes enchanting books work through the command.[32]
- enchant_command.remove_max_level_limit is true in this pack. The /enchant command can then apply any enchantment at a level from 1 to 255.[32]
- fix_roman_numerals is set to ROMAN, and the allowed values are NONE, ARABIC and ROMAN. Vanilla only has translations for a few roman numerals, so this adds full support for enchantment levels and mob effect amplifiers. If you change it, reload resource packs with F3+T.[33]
Per-enchantment files
Each enchantment file has three entries: an incompatible list, an items list and a schemaVersion, which is 2 in the files shown. Going by the names, items is what the enchantment can go on and incompatible is what it can't be combined with. Here are the pack settings you're most likely to run into.[1][3]
- Infinity: incompatible lists apotheosis:endless_quiver, and the Endless Quiver file lists minecraft:infinity back. Mending is not on Infinity's list, and Mending's own list names only cyclic:laststand, armorplus:soul_harden and apotheosis:life_mending, so Infinity and Mending are not blocked by these files.[3][5][27]
- Silk Touch: incompatible lists Luck of the Sea, Looting, Fortune, cyclic:auto_smelt, enderio:xp_boost and enderio:auto_smelt. Fortune's file also lists Silk Touch and cyclic:auto_smelt.[12][34]
- Trident enchantments: Riptide lists Loyalty and Channeling, Channeling lists Riptide, and Loyalty lists Riptide.[9][10][25]
- Boots: Depth Strider and Frost Walker each list the other as incompatible.[23][24]
- Protection: the incompatible list is empty. Blast Protection, Fire Protection and Projectile Protection each list the other two.[6][29][30][31]
- Thorns: incompatible lists cyclic:laststand, apotheosis:icy_thorns, twilightforest:fire_react and twilightforest:chill_aura.[26]
Unverified The sources don't show the mod's own default values, so I can't say which of these settings the pack changed. The server config (config/universalenchants-server.toml) and the Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods and Looting files (config/universalenchants/minecraft/) exist in the pack but their values weren't available here. Check those files directly for what they set.
What changed in Universal Enchants between versions?
1 part
There isn't much history to cover for Universal Enchants in this pack. Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2 ships Universal Enchants 8.0.0, using the Forge jar built for Minecraft 1.20.1.[2]
The mod was first included in Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.45.4 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack for a while.[2]
Mod changelog
- v8.0.0-1.20.1 (2023-06-27): ported to Minecraft 1.20.1. This is the only entry in the mod's changelog for the version in the pack.[35]
Unverified Whether any Project Infinity release changed how this mod behaves is not shown here. The sources I was given contain no pack changelog entries for Universal Enchants, so check the pack's own changelog for that.
