What is OpenBlocks Trophies?

OpenBlocks Trophies is in this pack's mod list. The pack ships version 1.20.1-5.1.5, in the file OpenBlocksTrophies-1.20.1-5.1.5.jar.[1]

It isn't a recent addition. The mod was already in the pack by version 0.0.45.4 or earlier.[1]

Unverified The sources here don't include a description of what the mod does: there is no platform page data and no in-jar guidebook for it. So this section doesn't cover its gameplay or where the pack's quest book places it.

How do you get started with OpenBlocks Trophies?

3 parts

Trophies in this pack are collectibles that mobs drop, so your first step is to go out and kill things. The mod's own advancements start with one called "Collect a trophy dropped by a mob. How lucky!", and that "lucky" is the point: drops are chance-based.[2]

Step 1: Check the drop chances in JEI

The mod adds a "Trophy Drops" page to JEI. For each trophy it shows the drop chance, and it flags trophies that only drop on a player kill. It also notes where fake players count. Look here before you hunt, so you know what you're aiming for.[2]

Step 2: Know what counts as a kill

The pack's config file sets a few rules that decide whether a trophy can drop at all:[3]

  • any_kill_drops is false in this pack. Trophies only drop on a proper player kill, not when a mob dies to fall damage or another mob.[3]
  • fake_player_drops is also false. Mob grinders that use fake players won't give you trophies. The config file names the mob masher from MobGrindingUtils as an example of this.[3]
  • trophy_drop_override is -1, which means the override is off. Each trophy uses its own drop chance from its trophy json.[3]
  • charged_creeper_player_trophy_chance is 0.2, a 20% chance for a player killed by a charged creeper to drop a trophy. The config says this mostly exists for singleplayer worlds.[3]
Tip: Because grinders with fake players don't count here, you'll want to do the killing yourself if you're chasing a specific trophy.[3]

Step 3: Pick a collection goal

Once your first trophy drops, the advancements give you goals to chase. They include a trophy from a boss or miniboss, a trophy from every vanilla mob, all 22 common fish trophies, and every horse variant. The rarest one is the Blue Axolotl trophy.[2]

How does OpenBlocks Trophies work?

5 parts

OpenBlocks Trophies has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids. The whole mod is about one thing: mobs dropping trophy blocks when they die. Everything below is about when and how often that happens in this pack.[2][3]

How a trophy drops

Each mob's drop chance lives in its own trophy json file, along with the entity it belongs to and display values called offset and scale. A trophy item shows which mod the mob comes from in its tooltip, and trophy variants get their own tooltip line.[2][3][4]

The mod also adds a Display Trophy block alongside the regular Trophy block. Placed trophies are named after the mob, as in "Zombie Trophy" style names.[2]

What counts as a kill

In this pack, any_kill_drops is false. That means a trophy only drops from a player kill. Mobs that die to fall damage, another mob and so on won't drop one. If it were true, any death could drop a trophy.[3]

fake_player_drops is also false here. Fake players do not make mobs drop trophies, so a grinder like the mob masher from MobGrindingUtils won't give you any. The in-game recipe viewer page for trophy drops has a note for entries where fake players count.[2][3]

Tip: If you build an automatic mob farm and want trophies from it, the config switch you need is fake_player_drops. In this pack it is off, so farms driven by fake players won't drop trophies.[3]

Drop chances

Every trophy's chance is set in its json. trophy_drop_override lets you override that chance without changing every json. It is set to -1 in this pack, and any negative number disables the override, so the per-mob json values are the ones in use. The value works as a percentage of the number times 100, so 0.2 would be a 20% chance.[3]

The pack ships its own data files for two Cataclysm bosses, Scylla and the Clawdian. Both have a drop_chance of 0.001, an offset of 0.0 and a scale of 1.0. Those are the pack's values for these two trophies.[3][4][5]

The recipe viewer integration shows a Trophy Drops page with the chance for each mob. It also flags trophies that only drop on a player kill.[2]

Player trophies and charged creepers

Players can drop a trophy too, but only when a charged creeper kills them. charged_creeper_player_trophy_chance is 0.2 in this pack, which is a 20% chance. Setting it to 0.0 turns these drops off. The config notes this exists mainly for singleplayer, where getting a player kill on a player is hard.[3]

Advancements and commands

The mod has its own advancement tab about trophy collecting. Goals include getting a trophy dropped by a boss or miniboss, collecting all 22 common fish trophies, every horse variant, and a trophy from every vanilla mob. The rarest one is the Blue Axolotl trophy.[2]

The mod also has commands for pack makers. Their messages tell us they can count trophies, place them, and generate trophy configs or a trophy stub for a given entity. The exact command names and syntax are not in the sources I have.[2]

How do you progress through OpenBlocks Trophies?

1 part

For this mod, what the pack's data files set is which bosses drop a trophy. The pack's own data for the mod covers the Cataclysm bosses Clawdian and Scylla.[4][5]

Trophy data the pack sets

  • Clawdian: the trophy entry targets the entity cataclysm:clawdian, with drop_chance set to 0.001, offset 0.0 and scale 1.0.[4]
  • Scylla: the trophy entry targets the entity cataclysm:scylla, with drop_chance set to 0.001, offset 0.0 and scale 1.0.[5]

Both entries use the same values, so neither boss is set to drop its trophy more often than the other.[4][5]

Tip: These files sit in the pack's own kubejs data folder under obtrophies, so they are pack changes and not just the mod's defaults. To check what a trophy boss is set to, look there.[4][5]

Which OpenBlocks Trophies config options matter?

2 parts

OpenBlocks Trophies has a small config, split into a common file that controls drops and a client file that controls how player trophies look. Here is every option in those files and how this pack sets it.[3][6]

Drop settings

These live in trophy_drop_override and its neighbours in the common file, and they decide when trophies actually drop.[3]

  • trophy_drop_override is set to -1 in this pack. The option can be set from -1.0 to 1.0, and any negative number disables the override. So the pack leaves it off, and each trophy uses the drop chance from its own trophy json. If you set a positive value it works as a percentage, so 0.2 would be a 20% chance.[3]
  • any_kill_drops is false in this pack. That means a kill has to count as a player kill for a trophy to drop. If you turn it on, trophies can drop whenever a mob dies, for example from fall damage or another mob.[3]
  • fake_player_drops is false in this pack. If you set it to true, fake players allow mobs to drop trophies, which lets mob grinders such as the mob masher from MobGrindingUtils produce them.[3]
  • charged_creeper_player_trophy_chance is 0.2 in this pack, a 20% chance that a player drops a trophy when killed by a charged creeper. The range is 0.0 to 1.0, and 0.0 disables these drops. The option mostly exists for singleplayer worlds, where getting a player kill on a player is difficult.[3]

Client display settings

Tip: Want trophies to drop from grinders or non-player kills? Set fake_player_drops or any_kill_drops to true. Both are false in this pack.[3]

Unverified The pack files show the values this pack uses, but they do not say which of them differ from the mod's own defaults.

If true, player trophies will render their names over their head similar to how players do.
config/obtrophies-client.toml
true
render_player_trophy_name_decorators
If true, some player trophies will render with special icons or name colors. If you find this to be too distracting for some reason, you can turn this off to keep the names plainly formatted.
config/obtrophies-client.toml

any_kill_drops
If true, allows trophies to drop whenever a mob dies. This can be to fall damage, another mob, etc. Basically, a kill doesnt have to count as a player kill for a trophy to drop.

charged_creeper_player_trophy_chance
The chance a player will drop a trophy when killed by a charged creeper. This config mostly exists for singleplayer worlds where getting a player kill on a player is rather difficult. This value works as a percentage (number * 100), so 0.2 would be a 20% chance for example. Set this value to 0.0 to disable drops from charged creeper kills.
config/obtrophies-common.toml

fake_player_drops
If true, fake players will allow mobs to drop trophies. This can allow mob grinders from other mobs to drop trophies, such as the mob masher from MobGrindingUtils.
config/obtrophies-common.toml

trophy_drop_override
The chance a trophy will drop from its respective mob. All trophy drop chances are defined in their trophy json, but if you want to override that chance without going through and changing every json this is for you. This value works as a percentage (number * 100), so 0.2 would be a 20% chance for example. Set this value to any negative number to disable the override.
