What is Environmental Materials?

Environmental Materials is part of this pack. The pack ships version 2.1.5.0, built for Forge on Minecraft 1.20.1.[1]

It has been in the pack for a while: it was already included in version 0.0.45.4 or earlier, so it isn't a recent addition.[1]

I can't confirm any further details about what the mod adds from the sources I have for this pack, so I'm not going to guess. Check the other sections of this guide for anything that can be confirmed, such as recipes or configs.[1]

How do you get started with Environmental Materials?

5 parts

Environmental Materials is a building-block mod, so your first steps are about getting the base stones and then turning them into the shapes and colours you want. In this pack, the main stone recipes were changed, so follow the recipe blocks below rather than any recipe you remember from the mod's defaults.[2]

First, make Basalt

Start with Basalt. The pack changed this recipe, and one craft gives you 8 blocks. It is also the starting point for two of the other base stones, so make a stack of it first.[2]

Then branch into the other base stones

Once you have Basalt, you can make Blueschist and Greenschist. The pack changed both recipes, and each craft makes 8.[2]

Taconite does not need Basalt. It is another pack-changed recipe that makes 8 per craft.[2]

Get Marble

Marble is different from the stones above. The pack adds its own recipe for it, and one craft makes 24 blocks.[2]

Use the stonecutter for shapes

You don't have to hand-craft every variant. The mod has a large number of stonecutting recipes (600 in this pack), so the stonecutter is the quick way to get shapes such as Blueschist Bricks, Blueschist Cobble, Blueschist Cobble Stairs and Blueschist Cobble Wall. Here is the brick one as an example.[2]

  • any blueschist block

Tip: Made the wrong shape? You can turn Blueschist blocks, stairs and walls back into plain Blueschist with shapeless crafting, and two slabs also give you one Blueschist back.[2]

Add colour and glass

Coloured alabaster is made by combining a dye with any alabaster block, and one craft gives you 8. Black Alabaster is one example.[2]

For glass, the mod makes borderless versions from vanilla stained glass, 4 per craft. Black Borderless Glass is one example. A single borderless glass block then makes 16 panes, such as Black Borderless Glass Pane.[2]

How does Environmental Materials work?

5 parts

Environmental Materials is a building-block mod, and the sources for this pack describe it only through its blocks and the recipes that make them. Nothing in them covers machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or automation for this mod, and the pack has no config files for it. So the mechanics here are all crafting table and stonecutter recipes.[2][3]

Making the raw stones

The base stones are Basalt, Blueschist, Greenschist and Taconite. The pack changed all four of these recipes, so don't assume the mod's default recipes apply. Each one makes 8 blocks per craft.[2]

Stonecutting and converting back

The stonecutter is the main tool for changing shapes. The mod has 600 stonecutting recipes that turn its own blocks into other variants, with 575 different results. Each stone type has a block tag, and any block in that tag can be cut into the other shapes.[2]

Blueschist shows the pattern. Any Blueschist block can be cut into Blueschist, Blueschist Bricks or Blueschist Brick Stairs.[2]

You can also undo a shape at the crafting table. For Blueschist, blocks and stairs each turn back into plain Blueschist, and slabs do the same when you use 2 of them. The mod has 100 shapeless recipes of this kind in total.[2]

Borderless glass

Borderless glass starts from vanilla stained glass, and one craft gives you 4 blocks. Turning a block into panes is generous: one block makes 16 panes. The sources show black, blue and brown, and all three follow the same pattern. Here is black as the example.[2]

Crafting Shaped

4 × Black Stained Glass

Recipe id: enviromats:blocks/borderless_glass/black

6 × Black Borderless Glass

Recipe id: enviromats:blocks/borderless_glass_pane/black

The finished blocks are Black Borderless Glass and Black Borderless Glass Pane. The blue and brown versions are Blue Borderless Glass, Blue Borderless Glass Pane, Brown Borderless Glass and Brown Borderless Glass Pane.[2][3]

Recolouring alabaster

Alabaster changes colour with a dye. Combine a dye with any alabaster and you get 8 blocks in the dye's colour, such as Black Alabaster, Blue Alabaster or Brown Alabaster.[2]

Tip: Not sure how to get a particular shape or colour? Check the stonecutter first. Most conversions between a stone's own variants go through it.[2]

How do you progress through Environmental Materials?

4 parts

Environmental Materials progresses through recipes in this pack. You craft the raw stones first, then cut them into every shape you want. Dyed alabaster and borderless glass are side branches.[2]

Step 1: the raw stones

The pack has changed the recipes for Basalt, Blueschist, Greenschist and Taconite. Each recipe gives you 8 blocks, so a small batch of materials goes a long way. Basalt comes first, because both Blueschist and Greenschist use it as an ingredient.[2]

Marble is a pack addition

Marble has its own recipe, added by the pack. It gives you 24 Marble per craft.[2]

Step 2: shaping with the stonecutter

Once you have a stone, the stonecutter does most of the work. Any block from the Blueschist group can be cut into Blueschist Cobble, Blueschist Bricks, Polished Blueschist and their stairs, slabs and walls. Across the whole mod there are 600 stonecutting recipes, built on 25 different block groups.[2]

Side branches: alabaster and glass

Alabaster is recoloured with dye, and each craft gives you 8 blocks of the new colour, for example Black Alabaster.[2]

One example of the dye recipes: it makes 8 Black Alabaster.

Borderless glass starts from the matching vanilla stained glass and gives you 4 blocks per craft. One borderless glass block then makes 16 panes.[2]

Crafting Shaped

4 × Black Stained Glass

Recipe id: enviromats:blocks/borderless_glass/black

Makes 4 Black Borderless Glass.

Crafting Shaped

6 × Black Borderless Glass

Recipe id: enviromats:blocks/borderless_glass_pane/black

Makes 16 Black Borderless Glass Panes from one block.

Tip: Craft Basalt in bulk first. Blueschist and Greenschist both need it, and each Basalt craft gives you 8.[2]

How does Environmental Materials work with other mods?

The only link between this mod and another mod that the recipe data shows is a single recipe. The pack adds a shaped crafting recipe that turns Marble Essence from Mystical Agriculture into 24 Marble in one craft.[2]

No other recipes in the pack's data mix Environmental Materials items with items from other mods.[2]
