ME-Beam-Former is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 1.21.1-1.3.0. Add an ME Beam Former to AE2 to enable visually and wireless visually stunning ME network connections. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is ME-Beam-Former?

3 parts

ME-Beam-Former is a lightweight Applied Energistics 2 addon that links two points of your ME setup with a visible, colored beam. This pack ships version 1.21.1-1.3.0. It's for you if you want to bridge a gap in your ME network without running extra cable, and you like the link to look good too.[1][2]

What you get

  • ME Beam Former is a cable part. Put it on an AE2 cable and point it at another Beam Former part facing back at it. A solid block in the way blocks the beam, and the effective range is up to 32 blocks.[3]
  • Mega ME Beam Former is the block version. Only its back side connects to ME cable, its max distance is 32 blocks, and both ends must be online and powered for the beam to render.[4]
  • Omni ME Beam Former is a multi-link beam device. You link it to other Omni Beam Formers with the Laser Binding Tool, within 16 blocks horizontally and 32 blocks vertically.[5]
  • Wireless Energy Induction Tower is a wireless energy relay. You can bind it to other towers or to a machine with an energy capability, within 20 blocks horizontally and 256 blocks vertically.[6]
  • Laser Binding Tool is the tool for binding Omni Beam Formers and Wireless Energy Towers.[7]
Tip: Does the beam look too busy? Sneak and right-click a Beam Former part with an empty hand to hide or show the beam.[3]

Energy tie-in

If AppFlux is installed, the Wireless Energy Tower can extract FE stored in your ME network. That makes the tower a handy way to push power out to machines wirelessly.[6][8]

Where it fits in the pack

The mod has its own in-game guide, listing its devices and items, so you can look things up without leaving the game.[9]

Unverified The sources don't place this mod on the ATM Star path or tie any quest to it, so treat it as an optional AE2 quality-of-life addon rather than a required progression step. The sources also don't confirm whether AppFlux is in this pack.

How do you get started with ME-Beam-Former?

5 parts

This mod lets you connect AE2 devices with beams. The order below goes from the simplest link to the longer-range and energy options, so you only craft what you actually need.[9]

Step one: the ME Beam Former

Start with the ME Beam Former. It's a cable part that forms a point-to-point AE2 connection using a beam, and it's the simplest way to bridge two spots on your ME network.[3]

  1. Place one on an AE2 cable.[3]
  2. Place a second one so it faces back at the first. A solid block in between blocks the beam.[3]
  3. Keep them within 32 blocks of each other.[3]
  4. Sneak and right-click with an empty hand to hide or show the beam.[3]

Step two: the Mega ME Beam Former

The Mega ME Beam Former is a block version of the Beam Former. Only its back side connects to ME cable, and its maximum distance is 32 blocks. Both ends must be online and powered for the beam to render.[4]

Step three: the Laser Binding Tool

Before you move on to the Omni Beam Former or the energy tower, you need the Laser Binding Tool. It binds Omni Beam Formers and Wireless Energy Towers. The pack changed this recipe, so use the one below and not what you remember from the mod's defaults.[7][10]

  • Sneak + right-click selects a source (tower or omni).[7]
  • Right-click links or unlinks, either tower-to-tower or omni-to-omni.[7]
  • Sneak + left-click in the air clears the selected source.[7]

Step four: the Omni Beam Former

The Omni ME Beam Former is a multi-link beam device. You link it to other Omni Beam Formers with the Laser Binding Tool, and it can only connect to other Omni Beam Formers. Its range is within 16 blocks horizontally (X/Z) and within 32 blocks vertically (Y).[5][11]

Step five: the Wireless Energy Tower

The Wireless Energy Induction Tower is a wireless energy relay. The pack changed its recipe too, so craft it from the one below.[6][10]

  • Towers link to other towers, and a tower can also bind to a machine that has an energy capability.[6]
  • To connect towers, use a normal right-click with the Laser Binding Tool, without sneaking.[11]
  • To bind a machine, select the tower first, then sneak + right-click the machine.[7][11]
  • Range is within 20 blocks horizontally (X/Z) and within 256 blocks vertically (Y).[6]
Tip: If AppFlux is installed, the Wireless Energy Tower can extract FE stored in the ME network.[8]

How does ME-Beam-Former work?

6 parts

ME Beam Former is an Applied Energistics 2 addon that connects AE2 devices with beams. In this pack it adds four devices and one tool: a cable part, a block version of that part, a multi-link Omni version, and a wireless energy relay tower. Here's how each one behaves.[1][9]

ME Beam Former (the cable part)

The ME Beam Former is the basic building block. It forms a point-to-point AE2 connection using a beam. You place it on an AE2 cable and point it at another one facing back at it.[3]

Its effective range is up to 32 blocks. Sneak + right-click with an empty hand hides or shows the beam.[3]

Watch out: A solid block between the two parts blocks the beam, so keep the line clear.[3]

Mega ME Beam Former

The Mega ME Beam Former is a block version of the Beam Former. Only its back side connects to ME cable, and you need two of them placed opposite each other to form a beam. Its maximum distance is 32 blocks.[4][11]

Both ends must be online and powered for the beam to render.[4]

Omni ME Beam Former

The Omni ME Beam Former is a multi-link beam device. You don't aim it. Instead, you link it to other Omni Beam Formers with the Laser Binding Tool, and it can only connect to other Omni Beam Formers.[5][11]

Its range is within 16 blocks horizontally (X/Z) and within 32 blocks vertically (Y). If you try to link past that, the tool tells you the connection is out of range.[5][11]

Wireless Energy Induction Tower

The Wireless Energy Induction Tower is a wireless energy relay. You can bind towers to other towers, and you can also bind a tower to a machine that has an energy capability.[6]

Its range is within 20 blocks horizontally (X/Z) and within 256 blocks vertically (Y). That's a lot of height for stacking power relays.[6]

If AppFlux is installed, the tower can extract FE stored in the ME network.[8]

The pack changed this recipe from the mod's version, so use the one shown here.[10]

Linking with the Laser Binding Tool

The Laser Binding Tool binds Omni Beam Formers and Wireless Energy Towers. The pack changed its recipe from the mod's version too.[7][10]

  • Sneak + right-click selects a source, either a tower or an Omni.[7]
  • Right-click links or unlinks, tower-to-tower or omni-to-omni.[7]
  • Sneak + left-click in the air clears the selected source.[7]

Towers have one extra rule. Binding a tower to a machine needs Shift + right-click, while connecting two towers needs a normal right-click without Shift. The tool warns you if you use the wrong one.[11]

  1. Sneak + right-click the first tower to select it as the source.[7][11]
  2. To link towers, right-click the second tower normally. Right-clicking it again unlinks them.[7][11]
  3. To power a machine, sneak + right-click the machine while the tower is still selected. The tool confirms with a message.[11]
Tip: If you get an out-of-range message, remember the limits. Omni links are 16x16 horizontal and 32 vertical, and tower links are 20x20 horizontal and 256 vertical.[11]

Config

The pack sets alwaysRenderBeams to false. That means energy tower beams are only visible while you hold the Laser Binding Tool. If you want them always visible, set it to true.[12]

The other options in that file are items, logDirtBlock, magicNumber and magicNumberIntroduction. Their descriptions only mention logging on common setup and a message. They don't affect how the beams work.[12]

Unverified The sources don't explain how much energy a tower transfers, whether beam links use up ME channels, or how items and fluids behave across a link. Test these in your own world before you build around them.

How do you progress through ME-Beam-Former?

5 parts

ME-Beam-Former doesn't have a big tech tree. It's a short upgrade chain that starts with a simple AE2 cable part and ends with wireless energy transfer. In this pack the tiers below follow the in-pack recipes.[9][10]

Tier 1: ME Beam Former (part)

The ME Beam Former is where everything starts. It's a cable part that forms a point-to-point AE2 connection using a beam. You place it on an AE2 cable and point it at another one facing back. A solid block in between blocks the beam, and the effective range is up to 32 blocks.[3]

Sneak and right-click with an empty hand to hide or show the beam.[3]

Tier 2: Mega ME Beam Former

The Mega ME Beam Former is the block version of the Beam Former, and its recipe builds on the part from tier 1. Only its back side connects to ME cable. The max distance is 32 blocks, and both ends must be online and powered to render the beam.[4][10]

Tier 3: Omni ME Beam Former

The Omni ME Beam Former is the multi-link step. Its recipe combines the Mega ME Beam Former with another ME Beam Former part. You link it to other Omni Beam Formers with the Laser Binding Tool. Its range is within 16 blocks horizontally (X/Z) and within 32 blocks vertically (Y).[5][10]

The Laser Binding Tool

You need the Laser Binding Tool before you can link Omni Beam Formers or Wireless Energy Towers. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's own, so don't rely on recipes from other modpacks.[7][10]

Tier 4: Wireless Energy Induction Tower

The Wireless Energy Induction Tower is a wireless energy relay. The pack changed this recipe too. You bind towers to other towers, and you can also bind a tower to a machine that has an energy capability. Its range is within 20 blocks horizontally (X/Z) and within 256 blocks vertically (Y).[6][7][10]

Tip: If AppFlux is installed, the Wireless Energy Tower can extract FE stored in the ME network. I haven't confirmed in the sources that AppFlux is part of this pack, so check before you plan around it.[8]

Unverified No quest information for this mod was available, so I can't say whether the pack's quest book points you toward any of these tiers.

How does ME-Beam-Former work with other mods?

3 parts

ME Beam Former is an Applied Energistics 2 addon, so almost everything it does in this pack plugs into AE2. The in-pack recipes for its main devices are built from AE2 components, and the devices themselves link parts of an AE2 network together with beams.[1][10]

Crafting with AE2 components

The ME Beam Former is crafted from AE2 items and is a cable part. You place it on an AE2 cable and point it at another Beam Former part facing back, with an effective range of up to 32 blocks. A solid block in the way blocks the beam.[3][10]

Recipe id: me_beam_former:beam_former_part

The Beam Former part is made entirely from AE2 items in this pack.

The Mega ME Beam Former is the block version. Its recipe uses the Beam Former part together with other AE2 items, so you craft the part first. Only its back side connects to ME cable. It also has a 32-block maximum distance, and both ends must be online and powered to render the beam.[4][10]

The Mega ME Beam Former needs the ME Beam Former part plus AE2 items.

The Laser Binding Tool

The Laser Binding Tool recipe has been changed by the pack, so don't rely on the mod's default recipe. It combines an AE2 item with vanilla Glass and any iron ingot. The tool is used to bind Omni Beam Formers and Wireless Energy Towers.[7][10]

AppFlux

The mod's own guide says that if AppFlux is installed, the Wireless Energy Tower can extract FE stored in the ME network.[8]

Which ME-Beam-Former config options matter?

2 parts

Good news: this mod has a tiny config. Everything lives in config/me_beam_former-common.toml, and only one option affects what you see in the world. The rest are developer-style logging and demo settings you can safely ignore.[12]

The one you'll actually notice

alwaysRenderBeams is set to false in this pack. With it off, energy tower beams are only visible while you hold the laser binding tool. If you want your beams on show all the time, set it to true.[12]

Tip: If you want your base to look good without holding a tool, flip alwaysRenderBeams to true. If you prefer a cleaner view, leave it on the pack's false setting.[12]

Logging and demo options

  • logDirtBlock is true in this pack. It only controls whether the dirt block is logged on common setup, so it has no effect on gameplay.[12]
  • items is set to a list containing only Iron Ingot. It is a list of items to log on common setup, again with no gameplay effect.[12]
  • magicNumber is 42 in this pack, the same as the mod default of 42. It must be greater than 0. The pack has not changed it.[12]
  • magicNumberIntroduction is set to "The magic number is... ". It is the intro text for the magic number message.[12]

Unverified The sources only list a mod default for magicNumber, so we can't confirm whether the pack changed any of the other options from their defaults.

What changed in ME-Beam-Former between versions?

2 parts

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships ME-Beam-Former 1.21.1-1.3.0, the newest version in the changelogs I have. The mod was first included in StoneBlock 4 1.2.0 or earlier. The notes below come from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]

1.21.1-1.3.0 (the version in this pack)

  • The connection logic of the ME beamformer was optimized, which fixes occasional connection instability in the AE network.[13]
  • The beam rendering was refactored for a better look without using lighting and shadows.[13]
  • The beamformer got a new model, which the changelog describes as cooler looking.[13]

Earlier releases

  • 1.21.1-1.2.3: the item model was replaced.[14]
  • 1.21.1-1.2.2: guide text was added, and an issue where the connection range of the wireless energy sensing tower had no effect was fixed.[15]
  • 1.21.1-1.2.1-fix: model loading now only happens on the client side, which prevents a server crash caused by loading client-only classes.[16]
Tip: If you ran into flaky AE network connections with the beamformer on an older version, the 1.3.0 connection fix is the one to look for, and it's already included in this pack version.[2][13]
