What is Wooden Shears?

2 parts

Wooden Shears does one simple thing: it adds Wooden Shears to the game, so you can craft shears out of planks. The pack ships version 1.21-3.2.3.0 of the mod, built for NeoForge.[1][2]

The mod's own project page describes the shears as having a durability of only 50, and says that value is configurable. That is the mod's description, not a value this pack's files confirm here.[1]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book places the shears in the "Getting Started" chapter, which is chapter 4 of 31 in the book and belongs to the "Main Questline" group. The quest is "Wooden Tools" quest. It comes after "The Sky of Beginning" quest and asks for one wooden tool (shovel, pickaxe, axe, hoe or sword) plus the Wooden Shears.[3]

The quest tells you why you want them: you need Wooden Shears to get your hands on Leaves.[3]

What comes next

"Getting Water" quest follows the Wooden Tools quest. It has you use the shears to gather Leaves from trees, either in the world or by placing the shears into the Bonsai Pot on Aeronautic ship islands. You then make a basin and squeeze the Leaves over it to get Water. After that, "Scooping And Dripping" quest continues the chain.[3]

The "Getting Started" chapter has 57 quests in total. The full text of many of them is in the quest book itself.[3]

Unverified Whether the ATM Star path uses Wooden Shears is not shown in the sources here. Check the pack's quest book chapters for where the mod's items come up.

How do you get started with Wooden Shears?

3 parts

Your first real job in this pack is getting hold of Wooden Shears. The quest book's "Getting Started" chapter (in the Main Questline group) uses them to unlock water, and water leads into most of your early progression.[3]

Step 1: Craft the Wooden Shears

The mod lets you make shears out of wood, so you don't need iron for this. The pack uses the mod's own recipe, shown here.[1][4]

The quest "Wooden Tools" quest comes right after "The Sky of Beginning" quest. It asks for one wooden tool of your choice plus the Wooden Shears. The quest says wooden tools don't have much durability or strength, but they beat bare hands, and you need the shears to get Leaves.[3]

Step 2: Turn leaves into water

"Getting Water" quest is the next quest. It is where the shears start to matter.[3]

  1. Use the shears to gather Leaves from trees. You can do this in the world, or by putting the shears into the Bonsai Pot if you started on an Aeronautic ship island.[3]
  2. Make the Wooden Basin and place it down.[3]
  3. Put Leaves on top of the basin and jump on them until you've squeezed out every drop. That gives you Water.[3]
  4. Make a Bowl to scoop the water out.[3]

After that, "Scooping And Dripping" quest has you make a Dripper. Water dripped onto Leaves makes more water, so this is how you start building a supply.[3]

Watch the durability

The pack sets [[config:config/woodenshears-server.toml#Balance Options.durability]] to 50. That is the mod's default, so the pack hasn't changed it. The allowed range is 0 to 10,000, and 0 turns durability off completely.[5][6]

Tip: With a maximum durability of 50, the shears won't last forever. Keep the recipe in mind and be ready to craft a spare.[1][5]

The quest book has more in this chapter that isn't covered here, so check it for the rest of the early steps.[3]

How does Wooden Shears work?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide

There's nothing deep to learn here. The mod adds a single item, Wooden Shears, and nothing else. The sources describe no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or automation for it, so there's nothing to set up or pipe around.[1]

Crafting

The mod's idea is that you can make shears from wood instead of metal. In this pack the recipe is a shaped crafting recipe, shown below exactly as the pack has it.[1][7]

Durability

The only real mechanic is durability. The mod's default is 50, and this pack keeps that value, so the shears wear out quickly.[1][8]

You can change it with [[config:config/woodenshears-server.toml#Balance Options.durability]]. It accepts values from 0 to 10,000, and setting it to 0 deactivates durability entirely.[8][9]

Tip: The mod's own FAQ says the defaultconfig directory only affects new savegames. For an existing world, edit the config in that world's serverconfig directory instead.[1]

How do you progress through Wooden Shears?

3 parts

Wooden Shears don't have a tier ladder in this pack. The recipe dump shows a single recipe for Wooden Shears, so there is nothing to upgrade through. What matters is where the quest book puts them: they are an early-game tool.[4]

Where they fit in the quest book

The shears first appear in the "Getting Started" chapter, which is chapter 4 of 31 in the book and part of the Main Questline group. The quest "Wooden Tools" quest comes right after "The Sky of Beginning" quest. It asks for any one of the vanilla wooden tools (shovel, pickaxe, axe, hoe or sword) and also for the Wooden Shears.[3]

The quest text says wooden tools don't have much durability or strength, but they still beat bare hands. It also tells you that you need the shears to get your hands on some Leaves.[3]

What the shears unlock next

"Getting Water" quest comes directly after the wooden tools quest. You use the shears to gather Leaves from trees. You can do that in the world, or by placing the shears into the Bonsai Pot on Aeronautic ship islands.[3]

After that, the quest has you make the Basin, put the Leaves on top of it and jump on them to squeeze out Water. From there the line continues to "Scooping And Dripping" quest, which has you scoop that water with a bowl and set up a Dripper.[3]

Tip: Make the shears early. The Getting Water quest comes straight after the wooden tools quest, and both the Basin water and the Bonsai Pot setup on ship starts depend on the shears.[3]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Wooden Shears?

3 parts

Wooden Shears show up in the "Getting Started" chapter, which sits in the Main Questline group and is chapter 4 of 31 in the quest book. Two quests there put them to work, back to back, and they kick off the early water chain.[3]

The two quests, in order

  1. "Wooden Tools" quest comes after "The Sky of Beginning" quest. It asks for one wooden tool (a shovel, pickaxe, axe, hoe or sword) and for Wooden Shears. The quest tells you that you need the shears to get your hands on some leaves.[3]
  2. "Getting Water" quest comes after "Wooden Tools" quest. It asks for a Basin (Wooden Basin) and a bowl, plus one more item task that the book gives no name. You use the shears to gather leaves from trees, either out in the world or by placing the shears into the Bonsai Pot on Aeronautic ship islands.[3]

What to do with the leaves

Once you have leaves, make the Basin and place it down. Put the leaves on top of it and jump on them until you've squeezed out every last drop. That gives you Water, but the quest warns that you will still need a way to scoop it out.[3]

Tip: Playing on one of the Aeronautic ship islands? You can place the Wooden Shears into the Bonsai Pot to gather your leaves instead of hunting for trees.[3]

Where it leads

"Scooping And Dripping" quest follows Getting Water. There you scoop water with a bowl and place a Dripper (Dripper) above a block. Dripping water on leaves creates more water. "Clay" quest comes after that quest and the dirt quest (a quest in "Getting Started"), and it has you drip water over dirt to make clay.[3]

Which Wooden Shears config options matter?

1 part

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide

Good news: Wooden Shears keeps its config very simple. The one option that matters is the durability setting in the server config, and this pack leaves it exactly where the mod puts it.[1][8]

Durability

The option [[config:config/woodenshears-server.toml#Balance Options.durability]] sets the maximum durability of Wooden Shears. In this pack it is 50, which is the same as the mod default, so the pack did not change it. The allowed range is 0 to 10,000.[8]

Setting the value to 0 deactivates durability entirely. The mod page also notes that the durability is configurable since mod version 1.2.0.0.[1][8]

Tip: If you run a server or want to tweak your own world, this is the file to edit: config/woodenshears-server.toml. Just remember that the pack's own value is 50, so anything else is your own change.[8]

What changed in Wooden Shears between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships with Wooden Shears 1.21-3.2.3.0, the NeoForge build. The mod was already in the pack by Aero 1.0.3 or earlier, so it has been part of Aero from the start.[2]

Notable change in the version you have

The one change on record for this version is a nice little quality-of-life addition: you can now burn wooden shears as fuel in furnaces, just like wooden shovels. It applies on all loaders, and the mod credits a community member for the idea.[10]

Since Aero 1.10.0 includes that version, this fuel use comes with the mod build in your pack. I have no pack changelog entries for this mod, so I can't tell you when else it changed between Aero releases.[2][10]
