What is Create Aeronautics: Covers?

1 part

Cover fixes a small but annoying problem. Regular Cable Facades only work on static blocks, so if you facade a cable and then assemble your ship, the facade falls off. The Cover behaves exactly like a facade but survives assembly. It travels with the contraption, renders in flight, collides correctly, and turns back into a normal block when you disassemble.[1]

It works on Create contraptions and on Aeronautics / Simulated physics ships. Right click a cable or any block to apply a cover, and pick it off again with the Cable Facades wrench. Just make sure you use a Cover and not a regular Facade. The creative tab and the pink outline on the item icon tell the two apart.[1]

The mod needs Cable Facades 2.0.1 or later and Create: Aeronautics. The pack ships Create Aeronautics: Covers 1.0.1.[1][2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The quest "Aeronautics Covers" quest lives in the "Aeronautics" chapter, which is chapter 5 of 31 in the book, in the group "Main Questline". The chapter has 58 quests, and this one comes after "Light Hull Blocks". Its task is simply to get a Cover. The rest of the chapter, including whatever follows this quest, is told in the quest book.[3]

The quest text describes a Cover as a facade that wraps around pipes, cables and other awkward blocks so the hull reads as one surface. It also mentions a Directional Cover, which does the same for a block that has a front.[3]

Tip: Regular cable facades fall off the moment a ship assembles, but covers survive both Create contraptions and physics assembly. A covered engine room stays covered when it takes off.[3]

How do you get started with Create Aeronautics: Covers?

3 parts

This mod is small, which makes it easy to start with. It adds the Cover, a facade-style wrapper that stays in place when your ship takes off, and the Directional Cover for blocks that have a front.[1][3][4]

Why you want it

Regular cable facades only work on static blocks. If you facade a cable and then assemble your ship, the facade falls off. Covers avoid that: they survive Create contraption assembly and physics ship assembly, so a covered engine room stays covered when it takes off.[1][3][4]

Step by step

  1. Craft the Cover. The first recipe below is the one used in this pack, and one craft gives you 16 of them.[5]
  2. Right-click a cable or any other awkward block with a Cover to apply it. Pick it off again with the Cable Facades wrench.[1]
  3. Assemble your ship. The covers travel with it, render in flight, collide correctly and turn back into normal blocks when you disassemble.[1]
  4. For a block that has a front, make Directional Cover instead. One craft gives you 6 of them.[3][5]

Tip: Covers and regular facades look alike, so check before you build. The pink outline on the item icon and the creative tab tell them apart, and the tooltip on a Cover says it survives assembly while regular facades do not.[1][4]

Where it sits in the quest book

The quest "Aeronautics Covers" quest is in the Aeronautics chapter of the Main Questline group, and it comes right after "Light Hull Blocks" quest, the quest about light hull blocks. Not every quest in that chapter could be shown here, so check the quest book itself for the rest.[3]

The mod lists Cable Facades 2.0.1 or later and Create: Aeronautics as its requirements.[1]

How does Create Aeronautics: Covers work?

4 parts

Aeronautics Covers solves one specific problem: regular Cable Facades only work on static blocks. If you facade a cable and then assemble your ship, the facade falls off. The Cover behaves like a facade but survives assembly, and that is the whole idea of the mod.[1]

In the mod's own tooltip words, it survives Create contraption and physics ship assembly, and regular facades do not.[4]

What happens on a contraption or ship

  • Your covers travel with the contraption or ship.[1]
  • They render in flight and collide correctly.[1]
  • On disassembly they come back to normal blocks.[1]

The mod page says this works on Create contraptions and on Aeronautics / Simulated physics ships.[1]

Using covers

  1. Get hold of covers. The pack's recipe for the base item is shown below.[5]
  2. Right click a cable or any block to apply a cover.[1]
  3. To take it off again, pick it off with the Cable Facades wrench.[1]

Tip: If you want a cover to ride with a contraption, make sure you use a Cover and not a regular Facade. The creative tab and the pink outline on the item icon tell the two apart.[1]

Directional Cover

The mod also adds the Directional Cover. In this pack, a single Cover is turned into 6 Directional Covers with a shapeless crafting recipe.[5]

Requirements

The mod page lists Cable Facades 2.0.1 or later and Create: Aeronautics as requirements.[1]

How do you progress through Create Aeronautics: Covers?

3 parts

This mod has no tiers to climb. It adds two items, the Cover and the Directional Cover, and the pack's quest book gives it a single quest. So this section is about where that quest sits and how you get both items.[3][5]

Where it sits in the quest book

The quest "Aeronautics Covers" quest is in the Aeronautics chapter, which is chapter 5 of 31 in the Main Questline group. Its task is to obtain a Cover. The quest book lists it after Light Hull Blocks, so you reach it along the hull path:[3]

  1. "Taking to the Skies" quest opens the chapter.[3]
  2. "The Hull" quest comes after it and covers glue, goggles, hull blocks and knowing what your ship weighs.[3]
  3. "Light Hull Blocks" quest comes after The Hull.[3]
  4. "Aeronautics Covers" quest comes after Light Hull Blocks.[3]

What the two items do

A Cover is a facade that wraps around pipes, cables and other awkward blocks so the hull reads as one surface. The Directional Cover does the same job for a block that has a front.[3]

The quest says regular cable facades fall off the moment a ship assembles. These two survive both Create contraptions and physics assembly, so a covered engine room stays covered when it takes off.[3]

Crafting

The Cover is a shaped crafting recipe and makes 16 per craft:[5]

The Directional Cover is a shapeless recipe that turns one Cover into 6 Directional Covers:[5]

Tip: Craft the plain Cover first. It is the only input for the Directional Cover, and it is the item the quest asks for.[3][5]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Create Aeronautics: Covers?

2 parts

This mod has one quest in the pack, and it sits in the "Aeronautics" chapter. That chapter is in the Main Questline group, as chapter 5 of 31 in the book, and it holds 58 quests.[3]

The Aeronautics Covers quest

"Aeronautics Covers" quest asks you to get hold of a single item: the Cover. The quest text describes it as a facade that wraps around pipes, cables and other awkward blocks, so your hull reads as one surface. A Directional Cover does the same job for a block that has a front.[3]

The quest also explains why you'd bother. Regular cable facades fall off the moment a ship assembles, but these survive both Create contraptions and physics assembly. A covered engine room stays covered when the ship takes off.[3]

Where it sits in the chapter

The quest is the end of a short hull branch. It comes right after "Light Hull Blocks" quest, which comes after "The Hull" quest. That one in turn follows "Taking to the Skies" quest, the opening quest of the chapter.[3]

  1. "Taking to the Skies" quest is a checkmark quest that introduces the chapter's idea of building a ship that flies and splits the rest into quest paths, including the hull.[3]
  2. "The Hull" quest is another checkmark quest. It covers glue, goggles, hull blocks and knowing what your ship weighs.[3]
  3. "Light Hull Blocks" quest asks for a Copycat Board (item copycats:copycat_board), the light block used to build a big hull cheaply.[3]
  4. "Aeronautics Covers" quest finishes the branch by asking for the Cover.[3]

Two other quests also follow The Hull, so you can do them in any order alongside the Light Hull Blocks branch: "Honey Glue" quest and "Physics Goggles" quest.[3]

What changed in Create Aeronautics: Covers between versions?

There isn't much history here yet. FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Create Aeronautics: Covers 1.0.1, and the mod has been in the pack since FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.0.3 or earlier.[2]

Mod changelog

  • 1.0.1: fixed an issue with the schematicanon. The changelog doesn't say what the issue was, so I can't tell you more than that.[6]

No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so I can't say whether the pack changed anything about it between releases.[2]
