What is RFTools Storage?
1 part
RFTools Storage is an addon for RFTools Base that adds the RFTools storage system and the items that go with it. It's meant to be used alongside the other RFTools addons, and it depends on RFTools Base and McJtyLib. If you like the RFTools family of mods, this is the one that handles your item storage.[1]
The pack ships version 1.21-6.0.5. Keep in mind that the mod's own project page still describes it as alpha, so treat it as a work in progress.[1][2]
Where it fits in the pack
The mod shows up in the pack's RFTools questline. Quest "Technical Storage" quest in the rftools_series chapter unlocks after an earlier quest in that chapter, so you'll reach it as you work through the RFTools series.[3]
It asks you to get three things: the Modular Storage, a storage module, and the Storage Scanner. For the module, any one of the four tiers counts: Tier 1 Storage Module, Tier 2 Storage Module, Tier 3 Storage Module or Tier 4 Storage Module.[3]
Unverified We couldn't confirm any ATM Star quest path involving this mod, and there is no in-jar guidebook to check. Recipes and exact storage capacities in this pack are covered in the sources for other sections, not here.
How do you get started with RFTools Storage?
5 parts
RFTools Storage is an addon for RFTools Base that adds a modular storage system. It also depends on McJtyLib, so you will meet items from those mods along the way. Here is the order I'd build things in, and why.[1]
Step 1: the Modular Storage
Start with the Modular Storage. The pack's quest for this mod lists it as its first task. This is the mod's own recipe, unchanged by the pack. It needs a Machine Frame from RFTools Base, so get that mod's basics sorted first.[3][4]

Step 2: a Tier 1 Storage Module
Next, make a Tier 1 Storage Module. The pack has changed this recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's default. Follow the recipe below instead.[4]

Step 3: the Storage Scanner
Then comes the Storage Scanner. This recipe is also changed by the pack, so use the one shown here.[4]

Step 4: upgrade your modules
Once the basics work, you can move up the tiers. The Tier 2 Storage Module, Tier 3 Storage Module and Tier 4 Storage Module each have their own recipe, and these are the mod's own recipes, not pack changes. The quest accepts any of the four tiers, so you don't need to upgrade to finish it.[3][4]
Step 5: screen modules
The mod also has two screen modules, the Dump Screen Module and the Storage Control Screen Module. Both use the mod's own recipes. They aren't needed for the quest, so treat them as an extra once your storage is running.[3][4]

How does RFTools Storage work?
6 parts
RFTools Storage is an addon for RFTools Base that adds the storage system and everything related to it. It depends on RFTools Base and McJtyLib. The project page calls the mod alpha, so expect it to still be growing. The sources don't include a guidebook or official docs for it, so this section covers what the pack's recipes and config files show.[1]
Modular Storage and storage modules
The block at the heart of the mod is the Modular Storage. It is crafted with a Machine Frame from RFTools Base.[4]
Crafting Shaped
| any chest | ||
Recipe id: rftoolsstorage:modular_storage
Its storage comes from modules in tiers from Tier 1 Storage Module up to Tier 4 Storage Module, with Tier 2 Storage Module and Tier 3 Storage Module in between. The pack changes the Tier 1 recipe from the mod's own. The higher tiers are a chain, because each one is crafted from the module of the tier below. The Tier 4 recipe also needs an Infused Diamond from RFTools Base.[4]

Modular Storage GUI and client options
The server config sets a GUI height for each style of modular storage screen: storage.modularStorageGuiHeight1 is 236 for the smallest, storage.modularStorageGuiHeight2 is 320 for the middle and storage.modularStorageGuiHeight3 is 490 for the tallest. The pack leaves all of them at the mod defaults.[5]
The client config has options for the search field. storage.autofocusSearch is false, so the search box isn't focused automatically when you open the storage. storage.clearSearchOnOpen is true, so the search is cleared every time you open it.[6]
The pack changes the group line colors. storage.groupBackground and storage.groupForeground are both set to 0. The mod defaults are -1,123,021 and -16,777,216.[6]
Storage Scanner
The Storage Scanner connects to storages so you can request items from them and insert items into them. It also uses a Machine Frame, and the pack changes its recipe from the mod's.[4][5]

Recipe id: rftoolsstorage:storage_scanner
This scanner recipe is changed by the pack.
The scanner runs on RF. Per the server config, it holds up to 50,000 RF (storagescanner.scannerMaxRF) and accepts 500 RF per tick (storagescanner.scannerRFPerTick). Requesting an item costs 100 RF (storagescanner.rfPerRequest) and inserting one costs 20 RF (storagescanner.rfPerInsert). These are all the mod defaults.[5]
- storagescanner.requestStraightToInventory is true, so requested items go straight into your inventory instead of an output slot.[5]
- storagescanner.scannerNoRestrictions is false, so the scanner respects claimed players and uses a fake player to access inventories. The config describes this as making it impossible to scan other players' properly claimed inventories.[5]
- storagescanner.xnetRequired is false, so XNet isn't required to connect storages to a scanner.[5]
- storagescanner.hilightStarredOnGuiOpen is true, so opening the scanner GUI selects the starred inventory view.[6]
- storagescanner.hilightTime is 5, which is how many seconds a block is highlighted in the world.[6]
Screen modules
The mod adds the Dump Screen Module and the Storage Control Screen Module as screen modules, both with the mod's own recipes. Their per-tick RF costs per block are storagescanner.dumpRFPerTick and storagescanner.storageControlRFPerTick, and both are set to 0 in this pack.[4][5]

Storage tablet
The server config also covers a storage tablet. It holds up to 20,000 RF (storage.tabletMaxRF) and accepts 500 RF per tick (storage.tabletRFPerTick). Each use costs 100 RF (storage.tabletRFUsage), plus an extra 100 RF per storage tier (storage.tabletExtraRFUsage). Using it together with the scanner module costs 100 RF per use (storage.tabletRFUsageScanner). All of these are mod defaults.[5]
Remote storage and sharing
The remote storage block can hold up to 100,000 RF (storage.remoteStorageMaxRF) and receive 300 RF per tick (storage.remoteStorageRFPerTick). Sharing an inventory costs RF per tick: 10 to share within the same dimension (storage.remoteShareLocal) and 50 to share to all dimensions (storage.remoteShareGlobal). The pack keeps the mod defaults here.[5]
How do you progress through RFTools Storage?
5 parts
RFTools Storage progression in this pack is a short ladder: craft a Modular Storage, craft a storage module, and upgrade that module tier by tier. The Storage Scanner and two screen modules round out the mod's items.[4]
The quest
The pack has one quest for this mod, "Technical Storage" quest, in the rftools_series chapter. It unlocks after another quest in that chapter. It has three tasks: get a Modular Storage, get a storage module (any of the four tiers counts), and get a Storage Scanner.[3]
Modular Storage
The Modular Storage is the first task of the quest. Its recipe is the mod's own, and the pack hasn't changed it.[3][4]
Crafting Shaped

Storage module tiers
There are four storage modules, from Tier 1 Storage Module up to Tier 4 Storage Module. The pack changes the Tier 1 recipe, so use the one below rather than what you remember from the mod's defaults.[4]
Crafting Shaped
| Empty slot | any chest | Empty slot |

Tiers 2, 3 and 4 are upgrade crafts that take the previous tier's module as part of the recipe. All three use the mod's own recipes.[4]
Storage Scanner
The Storage Scanner is the last task of the quest. The pack changes its recipe from the mod default.[3][4]

Screen modules
The Dump Screen Module and the Storage Control Screen Module are screen modules with the mod's own recipes. The quest doesn't ask for them.[3][4]

How does RFTools Storage work with other mods?
3 parts
RFTools Storage is an addon, so its main connection is to the rest of the RFTools family. It depends on RFTools Base and McJtyLib, and the project page says it is meant to be used together with the other RFTools addons.[1]
RFTools Base items in the recipes
Two of the recipes that tie into other mods use items from RFTools Base. The Modular Storage needs a Machine Frame, so you'll want your Base crafting sorted first. The top-tier Tier 4 Storage Module needs an Infused Diamond and is upgraded from the Tier 3 Storage Module.[4]

Shared tags: chests, ender pearls and gold
Some slots accept any item from a common tag instead of one specific item. The Modular Storage and the Tier 4 Storage Module both take any item from the common chest tag. The Storage Scanner takes any item from the common ender pearl tag and any from the common gold ingot tag.[4]
The pack changed the Storage Scanner recipe, so this is the pack's version and not the mod's default. The recipe block below shows what you craft in this pack.[4]

Quest link
The pack's RFTools questline, the rftools_series chapter, includes "Technical Storage" quest. It has three tasks: get the Modular Storage, get any one of the four storage modules (Tier 1 to Tier 4), and get the Storage Scanner. It has a prerequisite quest, so it does not open at the start of the chapter.[3]
Which FTB Skies 2 quests use RFTools Storage?
2 parts
RFTools Storage shows up in just one quest in this pack. It sits in the "rftools_series" chapter, which is the chapter for the RFTools family of mods. The quest has no title in the quest book, so it appears as an untitled entry.[3]
The storage quest
"Technical Storage" quest has three item tasks. You can work through them in this order:[3]
- Get a Modular Storage.[3]
- Get a storage module. Any one of the four tiers counts: Tier 1 Storage Module, Tier 2 Storage Module, Tier 3 Storage Module or Tier 4 Storage Module.[3]
- Get a Storage Scanner.[3]
Where it fits in the chapter
This quest comes after another quest in the same chapter, with the ID 7B48DA3C4F8A3456. You need to finish that one first before this one opens up.[3]
Unverified The sources don't say what rewards this quest gives, and they don't describe what the prerequisite quest asks for. Check the in-game quest book for those details.
Which RFTools Storage config options matter?
6 parts
RFTools Storage has a client config and a server config. In this pack, the only values flagged as changed from the mod default are two colors in the client file. Every numeric value in the server file matches the mod default, so the energy costs and capacities below are the mod's own numbers.[5][6]
Client options (changed by the pack)
- storage.groupBackground is set to 0 in this pack. The mod default is -1123021. It controls the background color for group lines in the modular storage GUI.[6]
- storage.groupForeground is set to 0 in this pack. The mod default is -16777216. It controls the foreground color for group lines.[6]
Client options (search and highlighting)
- storage.autofocusSearch is false, so the search field is not focused automatically when you open the modular storage GUI.[6]
- storage.clearSearchOnOpen is true, so the search field is cleared each time you open the modular storage GUI.[6]
- storagescanner.hilightStarredOnGuiOpen is true, so opening the storage scanner GUI selects the starred inventory view.[6]
- storagescanner.hilightTime is 5 seconds, the mod default. This is how long a block is highlighted in the world.[6]
Storage tablet energy
- storage.tabletMaxRF is 20,000 RF and storage.tabletRFPerTick is 500 RF per tick. Both are mod defaults.[5]
- storage.tabletRFUsage is 100 RF per use. storage.tabletExtraRFUsage adds another 100 RF per use for each storage tier. Both are mod defaults.[5]
- storage.tabletRFUsageScanner is 100 RF per use when the tablet is combined with the scanner module, also the mod default.[5]
Storage scanner
- storagescanner.scannerMaxRF is 50,000 RF and storagescanner.scannerRFPerTick is 500 RF per tick, both mod defaults.[5]
- storagescanner.rfPerInsert is 20 RF per item inserted and storagescanner.rfPerRequest is 100 RF per item requested, both mod defaults.[5]
- storagescanner.dumpRFPerTick and storagescanner.storageControlRFPerTick are both 0, so the dump and storage control modules have no per-tick RF cost. Both are mod defaults.[5]
- storagescanner.requestStraightToInventory is true, so requested items go straight into your inventory instead of the output slot.[5]
- storagescanner.scannerNoRestrictions is false, so the scanner respects claimed players and uses a fake player to access inventories. That should stop it scanning other players' properly claimed inventories.[5]
- storagescanner.xnetRequired is false, so XNet is not required to connect storages to a scanner.[5]
Remote storage
- storage.remoteStorageMaxRF is 100,000 RF and storage.remoteStorageRFPerTick is 300 RF per tick, both mod defaults.[5]
- storage.remoteShareLocal is 10 RF per tick to share an inventory within the same dimension. storage.remoteShareGlobal is 50 RF per tick to share it across all dimensions. Both are mod defaults.[5]
GUI heights
The three modular storage GUI styles use heights of 236 (storage.modularStorageGuiHeight1), 320 (storage.modularStorageGuiHeight2) and 490 (storage.modularStorageGuiHeight3), from smallest to tallest. All three are mod defaults.[5]
Unverified The server file also has a long storage.categories list that maps item classes to sorting categories. The sources don't say whether the pack changed it or how it behaves in this version, so leave it alone unless you know what you're doing.
What changed in RFTools Storage between versions?
FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships RFTools Storage 1.21-6.0.5. The mod was already in the pack as of 1.6.0 or earlier, so it's been around for a long time.[2]
The mod's own changelog for 1.21-6.0.5 lists a single change: the Patchouli manual documentation was updated and expanded. If you're ever unsure how something works, the in-game manual is a good place to look.[7]
Unverified No pack changelog entries for RFTools Storage were available, so it is unconfirmed whether any FTB Skies 2 release changed its recipes or config values.
