What is Relics?

3 parts

Relics is a drag-and-drop mod about useful items with unique mechanics. According to its project page, it adds 28 relics, each with its own complex mechanic. This pack ships Relics 0.10.7.8 for Minecraft 1.21.1.[1][2]

What makes relics different

Relics aren't just flat upgrades. The mod uses an MMO-like system of random stats, plus a leveling system, so copies of the same relic won't necessarily look alike. You can also improve and customize your relics, and the mod describes a progressive active ability system for relics that have abilities you trigger yourself.[1]

The mod is built to combine with other relics and even with other mods. The authors say its balance adjusts automatically to the modpack it's in, which they describe as working for both vanilla-like packs and packs where health and damage reach the thousands.[1]

Who it's for

Relics is for you if you like collecting gear, chasing good stat rolls and building your own combinations of items. The mod's page pitches it at players who have run out of content and want something to work toward.[1]

Where it shows up in this pack

In the pack's quest book, Relics items appear in the chapter called the_wild_hunt. One quest, a quest in "?", has you obtain the Springy Boot. Another, a quest in "?", has you obtain the Jellyfish Necklace. Both quests are untitled in the quest data.[3]

Tip: The mod's authors have no plans for a guidebook, and the sources don't include an in-jar one. This wiki is your best reference for how Relics works in this pack.[1]

How do you get started with Relics?

2 parts

Relics is a mod about useful items with unique mechanics. Each relic has a leveling system and random stats, so relics of the same kind can differ from one another. That makes it worth knowing what you're picking up before you commit to it.[1]

Your first targets in the pack

The clearest starting point in this pack is the quest chapter called the_wild_hunt. Its quests ask you to obtain a relic: one wants the Springy Boot (a quest in "?") and the other wants the Jellyfish Necklace (a quest in "?"). Both quests are untitled in the pack files, so you'll recognize them by their task items.[3]

Reading your relics

Hover over a relic and read its tooltip before you rely on it. Tooltips describe each ability, and they also list how the relic earns experience. For example, one relic earns experience for each trade with piglins, and another earns it for time spent flying.[4]

Tip: If the game tells you that working with the relic in this inventory is not possible, move the item to your main inventory and try again.[4]

Relics are meant to be combined with each other and with other mods, so it's worth keeping the ones you find and trying different combinations as you go.[1]

How does Relics work?

5 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

The mod's project page describes Relics as a mod about useful items with unique mechanics, with 28 relics that each have their own abilities, random stats and a leveling system. So "core mechanics" here means how a relic levels up, how its abilities are unlocked and upgraded, and what this pack's configs set.[1]

The project page says the mod's balance is automatically adjusted to the needs of the modpack. That's why the numbers below come from this pack's config files and not from the mod's own defaults.[1]

Leveling and ability points

Every relic levels up by earning experience from its own specific activity. In this pack the Amphibian Boot, Aqua Walker and Blazing Flask all use a max level of leveling.maxLevel, an initial cost of leveling.initialCost and a step of leveling.step. The Bastion Ring has the same max level and initial cost, but its step is leveling.step, so it asks for more per level.[5][6][7][8]

Each ability also has its own max level, required level and required points. The Bastion Ring's trade ability is the stricter example here: it needs relic level ability.abilities.trade.requiredLevel and ability.abilities.trade.requiredPoints points, and its max level is ability.abilities.trade.maxLevel. Its compass ability has a max level of ability.abilities.compass.maxLevel.[7]

Watch out: The mod's own message says working with a relic in certain inventories is not possible, and tells you to move the item to the player's main inventory and try again.[4]

How relics earn experience

  • Amphibian Boot: its tooltip lists +1 experience for each second of acceleration from the Fins ability, and +1 for every second of acceleration from the Slipping ability.[4]
  • Aqua Walker: its tooltip lists +1 experience for every 5 units of getting wet from the Moisture Resistance ability.[4]
  • Bastion Ring: its tooltip lists +1, +5 or +10 experience for each Zombified Piglin, Piglin or Piglin Brute killed, plus +1 for each additional trade from the Respect ability.[4]
  • Blazing Flask: its tooltip lists +1 experience for every 5 seconds of flight within the Eternal Fire ability.[4]
  • Chorus Inhibitor: its tooltip lists +1 experience for every 10 blocks to the teleportation point from the Teleportation Control ability.[4]

The tooltips also list a generic Experience Spreading source: each time any relic in the inventory gains experience, regardless of the method, a percentage of that experience is also gained by the relic that has this source.[4]

Ability stats and upgrades

Each ability stat in the configs has a minimum and maximum initial value, plus an upgrade modifier and an upgrade operation. Here is what the pack sets for the relics it configures.[5][6][7][8]

Fuel and buffers

The nearest thing Relics has to item handling is the Elytra Booster. Its tooltip says that using any combustible fuel that would work in a furnace on the relic in the inventory replenishes its internal buffer, which has a maximum capacity. Activating the ability while flying with an elytra gradually increases flight speed up to a limit, consuming fuel from that buffer. The tooltip also lists +1 experience for every 10 seconds of burning fuel when placing it in the buffer.[4]

The Infinity Ham works in a similar way. Its tooltip says that at a regular interval it regenerates up to 6 edible chunks, and when the relic is consumed, it automatically uses the required number of chunks to replenish the player's hunger.[4]

Where relics drop

The pack's configs give relics loot entries for specific chest loot tables, all set to 0.025, for example loot.entries.minecraft:chests/buried_treasure. The Amphibian Boot and Aqua Walker have entries for water, ocean, river, ship and aqua chests, plus buried treasure. The Bastion Ring has an entry for bastion and piglin chests. The Blazing Flask has entries for those same chests, plus nether, fortress, lava, magma and fire chests.[5][6][7][8]

How do you progress through Relics?

Relics appears in the pack's quest book in the "the_wild_hunt" chapter. The quests for this mod there are item tasks, so you complete each by having the matching relic.[3]

Both quests are untitled in the quest file. The quest data here only lists the item each task asks for, so it does not set out a tier order for these relics. Treat them as separate goals within the chapter.[3]

Unverified The sources here do not show any crafting recipe for the Springy Boot or the Jellyfish Necklace, so how you obtain them is not covered in this section. Check in-game for where they come from.

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Relics?

1 part

In this pack, Relics appears in the quest chapter "the_wild_hunt". The quests here are small: each one asks you to get a Relics item.[3]

The Wild Hunt chapter

The chapter file lists the Springy Boot quest first and the Jellyfish Necklace quest after it. Both quests are untitled in the pack files, so they only show up by their IDs.[3]

Which Relics config options matter?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Relics is configured with one JSON file per relic in config/relics. Each file has a leveling part, an ability part and a loot part. Here are the values this pack uses that you're most likely to care about.[5][6]

Leveling costs

In every relic file shown here, the initial cost is 100 and the max level is 10. The only thing that changes between relics is the step value, which is either 100 or 200.[5][6][7]

Ability requirements

Most abilities in these files have a required level of 0 and cost 1 point. These are the exceptions worth knowing before you plan a build.[5][6][7][16]

Ability stat values

Each ability stat has an initial value range and an upgrade modifier. These are a few you'll probably look at first.[9][11][12]

  • Chorus Inhibitor blink distance: initial values from 16 to 32, with an upgrade modifier of 0.2 (MULTIPLY_BASE). Cooldown: initial values of 5 and 10, with an upgrade modifier of -0.5 (ADD).[9]
  • Ender's Hand swap distance: initial values from 16 to 32, with an upgrade modifier of 0.15 (MULTIPLY_BASE).[12]
  • Elytra Booster boost: capacity starts between 50 and 100 and speed between 1.1 and 1.5.[11]
  • Drowned Belt riptide cooldown: the two initial values are 10 and 5, with an upgrade modifier of -0.5 (ADD).[10]

Loot chances

Every loot entry in these files is set to 0.025. Here is where each group of relics gets it.[5][6][7]

  • Amphibian Boot, Aqua Walker, Drowned Belt and Jellyfish Necklace: buried treasure and water, ocean, river and ship style chests, for example loot.entries.minecraft:chests/buried_treasure.[5][6][10][19]
  • Ice Breaker and Ice Skates: igloo and village fletcher chests, plus cold themed chests.[17][18]
  • Blazing Flask: bastion, nether style and ruined portal chests. Bastion Ring: bastion and piglin chests.[7][8]
  • Chorus Inhibitor, Elytra Booster and Ender's Hand: end and warp style chests.[9][11][12]
  • Holy Locket: desert, sand and pyramid chests.[16]
  • Hunter Belt, Infinity Ham and Leather Belt: village chests.[13][14][15]

What changed in Relics between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2 1.13.1 ships with Relics 0.10.7.8. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0.1 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modpack.[2]

Recent Relics changes

These are the Relics changelog entries I have for the releases leading up to the version in the pack. They're small maintenance updates, not big feature drops.[20][21][22]

  • 0.10.7.5: technical changes for addons.[22]
  • 0.10.7.6: fixed compatibility with OctoLib 0.6.[21]
  • 0.10.7.8: fixed another compatibility issue between Roller Skates and Helium Flamingo from RAR-Compat. This is the version your pack uses.[2][20]

Unverified I have no pack changelog entries for Relics, so I can't say whether any FTB Skies 2 release changed how the mod behaves. Changelogs for Relics versions between 0.10.7.5 and 0.10.7.8 other than those listed above are also unconfirmed.
