Particular ✨ Reforged is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 1.5.7. Particular is a mod that enhances Minecraft's ambience with many hand-crafted visual effects. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Particular ✨ Reforged?

3 parts

Particular is a purely visual mod. It adds hand-crafted ambience effects to the world, so it makes Minecraft look and feel more alive without adding new gameplay. The pack ships Particular Reforged 1.5.7, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1.[1][2]

What you'll see

  • 3D water splashes that match the water color. Wider entities make wider splashes, and taller falls make taller splashes.[1]
  • Waterfall cascades. They appear when falling water is over 2 block deep source water and the top source water has at least 1 open side.[1]
  • Fireflies in warm biomes, around flowers and tall grass. Their spawn rates are randomized at dusk.[1]
  • Falling leaves. Each leaves block has its own leaf particle, and the leaves create ripples when they land on water.[1]
  • Cave dust. The deeper you are and the less sunlight there is, the more of it spawns.[1]
  • Bubbles from chests and barrels opened underwater. Ender chests release green-tinted bubbles.[1]
  • Smaller touches: popping bubbles, ripples from rain and water drips, cake eating particles and emissive lava drips.[1]
Tip: Place soul sand under a chest underwater and it opens by itself and releases bubbles. It makes a nice decoration for an underwater base.[1]

Who it's for

It's for anyone who wants a prettier world and doesn't want to manage anything extra. You can disable any of the effects in the mod's configuration, and you can also adjust which biomes should not spawn cave dust. That's handy if an effect bothers you or costs you frames.[1]

The mod also adds custom falling leaves for Traverse, Regions Unexplored and Wilder Wild. Those only show up if the matching mod is installed.[1]

Where it fits in progression

It doesn't. Particular has no crafting, no machines and no tiers to unlock, so you can't gate or speed up your progress with it. The effects are active from the moment you load in.[1]

Unverified No in-jar guidebook, quests or ATM Star path involvement were found for this mod in the pack, and the pack's own configuration values for it are unconfirmed. If you want to change an effect, check the mod's config in your instance.

How do you get started with Particular ✨ Reforged?

2 parts

Good news: there's nothing to craft or unlock to get going. Particular is an ambience mod that adds many hand-crafted visual effects to the game, so it works on its own once it's in the pack.[1]

Unverified No in-pack recipes, quests or item descriptions for this mod were found, so there is no crafting order to follow and no recipe to show. Whether this pack changes any of the mod's default settings is also unverified.

What to look for first

The fastest way to get started is to go and see the effects for yourself. Here are the ones the mod lists, and where to find them.[1]

  • 3D water splashes: jump or fall into water. The splash matches the water color, gets wider with wider entities and taller with taller falls.[1]
  • Waterfall cascades: these appear when falling water lands over source water more than 2 blocks deep, and the top source water block has at least 1 open side. Strength depends on the fall height and the number of open sides.[1]
  • Fireflies: look for them in warm biomes around flowers and tall grass. Spawn rates are randomized at dusk.[1]
  • Falling leaves: each leaves block has its own leaf particle with different behavior, and the leaves make ripples when they land on water.[1]
  • Cave dust: go underground. The deeper you are and the less sunlight there is, the more dust spawns.[1]
  • Other effects: popping bubbles, ripples from rain and water drips, cake eating particles and emissive lava drips.[1]

A fun trick to try

Open a chest or barrel underwater and it releases bubbles. An ender chest releases green-tinted bubbles. If you place soul sand under a chest, it opens automatically and keeps releasing bubbles, which is a nice touch for an underwater build.[1]

Tip: If an effect bothers you or hurts your frame rate, the mod can be configured to disable any of its effects. You can also adjust which biomes should not spawn cave dust. I haven't confirmed the exact option names for this pack, so check the config file in your instance.[1]

The mod also adds custom falling leaves for blocks from Traverse, Regions Unexplored and Wilder Wild. Those only apply if the mods are present in your instance.[1]

How does Particular ✨ Reforged work?

6 parts

Particular is an ambience mod, so there are no machines, multiblocks, power, fluid pipes or item automation to learn here. The sources describe only visual effects, and nothing in them covers machine-style systems. What this section covers instead is how each effect decides when to appear, and which settings the pack uses for it.[1]

Water splashes and waterfalls

Splashes are 3D and match the water color. The wider the entity, the wider the splash, and the taller the fall, the taller the splash. Waterfall cascades appear when falling water is over 2 block deep source water, and the top source block must have at least 1 open side. Cascade strength scales with the height of the falling water and with the number of open sides on the source water.[1]

In the pack's config, general.advancedSettings.waterSplashSettings.minFallDistance is 0, so any fall can trigger splash particles. general.advancedSettings.waterSplashSettings.splashOpacity is 0.75, and both of these match the mod defaults. The pack also turns on general.advancedSettings.waterSplashSettings.cuboidSplashDroplets, general.advancedSettings.waterSplashSettings.softEntryParticles and general.advancedSettings.waterSplashSettings.waterCuboidBiomeTint. general.advancedSettings.waterSplashSettings.cuboidWaterfallSpray and general.advancedSettings.waterSplashSettings.smallDroplets are off.[3]

With soft entry particles on, soft entries into water emit bubbles and tiny falling-water droplets instead of a full splash. If cuboid waterfall spray is enabled, biome tinting decides whether it uses the local water color or the fallback set in general.advancedSettings.waterSplashSettings.waterCuboidColor.[3]

Modded fluids

general.advancedSettings.customFluidsSettings.waterLikeFluids lists fluids that are treated like vanilla water for splashes, rain ripples and waterfall spray. The pack fills it with TFC fluids: river water, salt water, flowing salt water, spring water and flowing spring water. general.advancedSettings.customFluidsSettings.cascadeFluidPairs is empty. The config notes that TFC fluids don't produce cascades because they have no flowing variant.[3]

Bubbles from chests and barrels

Opening a chest or barrel underwater releases bubbles, and ender chests release green-tinted ones. If you place soul sand under a chest, it opens automatically and releases bubbles. The barrel effect is enabled in the pack through general.enabledEffects.barrelBubbles.[1][3]

Fireflies

Fireflies spawn in warm biomes at flowers and tall grass, and their spawn rates are randomized at dusk. In the pack they only appear between general.advancedSettings.fireflySettings.startTime 12000 and general.advancedSettings.fireflySettings.endTime 23000. The biome temperature has to fall between general.advancedSettings.fireflySettings.minTemp 0.5 and general.advancedSettings.fireflySettings.maxTemp 0.9900000095367432. Those four values match the mod defaults. general.advancedSettings.fireflySettings.canSpawnInRain is false in the pack, so fireflies don't spawn in rain.[1][3]

The frequency modifiers decide how much each plant type contributes. These are the pack's values, and they match the mod defaults:[3]

general.advancedSettings.fireflySettings.frequencyModifiers.dailyRandom is set to 0, 0, 0, 0.33, 0.66 and 1, which are the daily random factors for firefly spawning. The lists for always-spawn biomes, extra spawn blocks, biome colors and the color pool are all empty in the pack. With an empty color pool, fireflies use the built-in yellow, blue and red mix.[3]

Falling leaves

Each leaves block has its own leaf particle with varying behavior, and leaves create ripples when they land on water. In the pack, general.advancedSettings.fallingLeavesSettings.spawnChance is 60 (higher means less frequent). general.advancedSettings.fallingLeavesSettings.layFlatOnGround and general.advancedSettings.fallingLeavesSettings.spawnRipples are on, while general.advancedSettings.fallingLeavesSettings.layFlatRightAngles is off.[1][3]

Cave dust

Cave dust spawn rates are proportional to depth and sunlight level. The pack keeps the mod defaults for general.advancedSettings.caveDustSettings.spawnChance (700, higher means less frequent), general.advancedSettings.caveDustSettings.baseMaxAge (200) and general.advancedSettings.caveDustSettings.fadeDuration (20). general.advancedSettings.caveDustSettings.excludeBiomes stops it from spawning in lush caves, dripstone caves and the deep dark.[1][3]

Tip: To change which effects you see, edit config/particular-common.toml. The mod can disable any effect and adjust which biomes don't spawn cave dust. If you want fewer leaves or less cave dust, raise the relevant spawnChance, because a higher number means less frequent.[1][3]

Which Particular ✨ Reforged config options matter?

6 parts

Everything for this mod lives in one file, config/particular-common.toml. It lets you switch individual effects on or off and tune how they behave. Here is how the pack sets the options you are most likely to touch.[1][3]

Effect toggles

Nearly every effect is switched on in this pack, including general.enabledEffects.waterSplash, general.enabledEffects.fireflies, general.enabledEffects.fallingLeaves, general.enabledEffects.caveDust and general.enabledEffects.cascades. The one exception is general.enabledEffects.poppingBubbles, which the pack sets to false.[3]

If something is eating your frame rate or just not your style, set the matching toggle in the same section to false. The mod page confirms any effect can be disabled this way.[1][3]

Cave dust

Fireflies

Falling leaves

general.advancedSettings.fallingLeavesSettings.spawnChance is 60, the mod default, and higher values mean fewer leaves. Leaves lay flat on the ground (general.advancedSettings.fallingLeavesSettings.layFlatOnGround is true) but not at right angles (general.advancedSettings.fallingLeavesSettings.layFlatRightAngles is false). They also make ripples when they land on water, since general.advancedSettings.fallingLeavesSettings.spawnRipples is true.[3]

Water splashes

Modded water

general.advancedSettings.customFluidsSettings.waterLikeFluids lists the TFC river, salt and spring water fluids, so they are treated like vanilla water for splashes, rain ripples and waterfall spray. general.advancedSettings.customFluidsSettings.cascadeFluidPairs is empty, and the config notes that TFC fluids do not produce cascades because they have no flowing variant.[3]

Tip: Every value the pack file marks with a mod default matches that default, so the sources show no changes to those options. Where the pack file shows no default, such as the popping bubbles toggle and the fluid lists, you can only rely on the value the pack uses.[3]

Unverified Whether the pack changed the options that show no mod default (for example popping bubbles being off, the cave dust excluded biomes and the water-like fluid list) is not confirmed by the available sources.

What changed in Particular ✨ Reforged between versions?

4 parts

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Particular Reforged 1.5.7, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.1 or earlier. I have no pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs. Those describe the mod's behaviour, not necessarily values the pack has changed.[2]

Latest changes

  • 1.5.7: Sable ships and boats no longer spam splashes while sailing. Splashes only trigger when a ship actually drops into the water, and cruising leaves a foam wake instead. A new enabledEffects.sableSplashes toggle turns off ship splashes and wakes.[4]
  • 1.5.7: The cave dust exclude biomes list now actually works.[4]
  • 1.5.5: TFC water (river, salt and spring) now gets splash, ripple and spray particles.[5]
  • 1.5.5: Fireflies now spawn on modded plants that override animateTick without calling super, so coverage is more consistent across blocks.[5]
  • 1.5.4: Cascade particles no longer pile up while the game is paused.[5]
  • 1.5.2: The notes tell you to update, because this version fixed a big lag issue with Create Aeronautics. They also list a fix for a crash when Create Aeronautics isn't loaded.[6]
  • 1.5.1: Added Create: Aeronautics compatibility for splashes.[7]

New config options in 1.5.4

This release added a batch of options. customFluidsSettings.waterLikeFluids lists fluids treated like vanilla water for splashes, rain ripples and waterfall spray, and it defaults to TFC river, salt and spring water. customFluidsSettings.cascadeFluidPairs takes "flowing, source" pairs to make cascade waterfalls for mod fluids with both variants. TFC fluids don't produce cascades because they have no flowing variant.[5]

Fireflies got their own settings too: fireflySettings.biomes (biomes where fireflies always spawn), fireflySettings.spawnBlocks (extra spawning blocks), fireflySettings.biomeColors (per-biome tint) and fireflySettings.colorPool (a random colour pool). TerraFirmaCraft became an optional dependency so the new defaults work out of the box.[5]

The 1.5.1 visual rework

  • Cascade waterfalls were reworked with new textures and gentler motion, and bigger waterfalls spawn proportionally more spray.[7]
  • Tiny cube-shaped fluid particles were added for splash droplets and lava splashes. They are on by default for splashes, and cuboidWaterfallSpray extends them to waterfalls.[7]
  • Gentle water entries now make a small ring of bubbles and droplets instead of a full splash, while real falls still produce the big splash.[7]
  • Splash particles are translucent, at 75% opacity by default, and this is adjustable in the config.[7]
  • Waterfalls are now saved per world and dimension, so cascade spray shows up instantly instead of taking a few seconds. Each remembered waterfall is rechecked once on load to confirm the water is still there. This works in singleplayer and multiplayer.[7]

Earlier fixes

  • 1.1.7: Fixed a crash on servers.[8]
  • 1.1.6: Fixed lag around oceans when exploring new chunks, an issue present since release.[9]
  • 1.1.4: Fixed cascades despawning and never coming back.[10]
