What is PackagedAuto?
2 parts
PackagedAuto is an addon for Applied Energistics 2 that uses "packages" of items to let you autocraft recipes with more than 9 items. Fluid crafting is supported too. This pack ships PackagedAuto version 4.0.8.21 for Minecraft 1.21.1.[1][2]
It's for you if you already run an ME Network and want to automate big or awkward recipes. The mod can run without Applied Energistics 2, but installing it alongside AE2 is recommended, and most of the machines are designed with ME Network integration in mind.[1][3]
How it works
You start by encoding Recipe Pattern Holders with a Package Recipe Encoder. A single holder can store up to 20 encoded recipes, and the encoder previews which Recipe Packages will be made.[3][4]
Next, put an encoded holder in a Packager. It tells the network which Recipe Packages it can make, and it turns the items you feed it into those packages. Then put a matching holder in an Unpackager, which unpackages a full set of packages into adjacent inventories or into package crafting machines, depending on the recipe type.[1][3][5][6]
When the Packager and Unpackager are connected to an ME Network, they each need a channel. They draw power from the network and offer packaging and unpackaging as autocrafting. The Packager also ejects the finished packages into the network.[5][6]
What else is in the mod
- Recipe types: Crafting (uses the Package Crafter), Processing, Ordered Processing and Positioned Processing, selectable in the encoder.[7][8][9][10][11]
- ME Packaging Provider: combines the Packager and Unpackager in one machine. It must be on an ME Network and can also provide direct recipes as one large processing recipe.[12]
- Packager Extension: copies a nearby Packager within a 3x3x3 area, so you need fewer holders when parallelizing.[13]
- Fluid Package Filler: makes Volume Packages filled with fluids. It needs power and a redstone signal.[14][15]
- Packaging Settings Cloner: copies and pastes settings between supported machines.[16]
Unverified Where PackagedAuto fits in this pack's progression is unverified. No quests in this pack involve the mod, and it is not on the ATM Star quest path.
How do you get started with PackagedAuto?
5 parts
PackagedAuto uses packages of items to ease certain crafting tasks. Holders encoded in the Package Recipe Encoder tell Packagers what they can make, and the Unpackager unpacks those packages again. Here is the order I'd build things in.[3]
Packaging Component
Start with the Packaging Component. It is the base part for other recipes in the mod, including the encoder, the recipe holder and the settings cloner, so you will keep coming back to it.[17]

Encoder and holders
Next, make the Package Recipe Encoder. It writes recipes into Package Recipe Holder items, and those holders give recipe data to your machines. You pick a recipe type, set the inputs and outputs, put holders inside and press save.[4][18]

One holder can store up to 20 recipes, so you don't need a new one for every recipe. If you use JEI or EMI, they have buttons that fill the encoder from a recipe, which saves a lot of clicking.[4]
The ME Packaging Component
This is where the pack differs from a plain install of the mod. The pack changed the recipes for the Packager and the Unpackager so that both need the ME Packaging Component. The pack also changed the recipe for the component itself, so make it before either machine.[17]

Packager and Unpackager
Put an encoded holder in the Packager. It can then make Recipe Packages for those recipes and ejects them into adjacent inventories. It needs power.[5]

The Unpackager takes complete sets of those packages and unpacks them into adjacent inventories or into package crafting machines, depending on the recipe type. It also needs power.[6]

Both machines can connect to an ME network, and each one then needs a channel. On a network, the Packager provides packaging as autocrafting and sends its packages into the network. The Unpackager provides unpackaging as autocrafting.[5][6]
Quality-of-life items
Once the basic chain works, build the Packaging Settings Cloner. It copies settings from one machine and pastes them onto another of the same type. For a Packager or Unpackager it can also copy the recipes, as long as the target has none and you carry an empty holder.[5][6][16]

How does PackagedAuto work?
10 parts
PackagedAuto turns a crafting job into packages. You encode recipes into holders, a Packager bundles the ingredients into Recipe Packages, and an Unpackager hands them out to an inventory or a crafting machine. Because a whole recipe travels as one set of packages, you can autocraft recipes with more than 9 items, and fluids are supported too.[1][3]
The mod can run without Applied Energistics 2, but it is built with AE2 in mind and works best with an ME network.[1][3]
Encoding recipes
Everything starts at the Package Recipe Encoder. You pick a recipe type, set the inputs and outputs with their counts, put Package Recipe Holder items inside and press save. A holder stores up to 20 recipes, and you can load them back with the load button. The encoder has 20 pattern slots in this pack, set by encoder.pattern_slots. The mod warns that changing that value in a running world may crash clients.[4][19]
With JEI, you can press the Move Items button to encode a recipe quickly. With EMI, use the Fill Recipe button, and for ingredients that accept several items you can choose one in the recipe tree. In this pack encoder.disabled_recipe_types is empty, so no recipe types are disabled.[4][19]
You can clear an encoded holder by putting it in a crafting grid. Combining an encoded holder with empty ones in a crafting grid copies its contents.[18]
Recipe types
- Processing is the most basic type. When encoded, inputs and outputs are sorted and stacked.[11]
- Ordered Processing keeps the ingredient order. When unpackaged, items go into adjacent inventories in the encoded order, and only into empty slots.[9]
- Positioned Processing uses a Positioned Package Distributor to spread items across separate inventories, again in the encoded order.[10]
- Crafting is the recipe type for recipes that can be crafted in a crafting table. It uses the Package Crafter, which ejects the crafted items into adjacent inventories.[8]
Packaging
Put an encoded holder in the Packager and it can make Recipe Packages for those recipes. It ejects the finished packages into adjacent inventories, and you can pull inputs back out from the top side. The Packager needs power.[5]
The Packager has three modes for choosing which package to make:[5][13]
- Require Exact makes the first package that exactly matches the inventory contents.[5]
- Require Disjoint checks that packages have no overlap and makes the one the contents can supply. Otherwise it falls back to Require Exact.[5]
- First Match makes the first package that can be made from the inventory contents.[5]
The Packager Extension copies a nearby Packager so you need fewer holders when parallelizing. Place it anywhere within a 3x3x3 area around a Packager. If several Packagers are in range, it copies the north-west-bottommost one it finds. It also needs power, and you can extract inputs from its top side.[13]
Unpackaging
The Unpackager takes complete sets of Recipe Packages. Packages go into trackers, and once a set is complete it is unpackaged into adjacent inventories or package crafting machines, depending on the recipe type. You can change the number of trackers. For processing recipes you can turn on blocking mode, which stops it unpackaging into occupied inventories. It needs power, and you can extract inputs from the top side.[6]
You can also unpackage a single Recipe Package by hand. Inside JEI, pressing the uses key on a package shows its contents and what the set is meant to create.[20]
Reaching crafting machines and other inventories
The Package Crafting Machine Proxy lets an Unpackager send items to a specialized package crafting machine at a distance. Bind a Proxy Marker to the machine and put the marker into the proxy. In this pack the proxy range is 8, set by crafting_proxy.range. A bound marker can be unbound in a crafting grid, and combining a bound marker with unbound ones copies the binding.[19][21]
For Positioned Processing, bind Distributor Marker items to inventories and place them in the distributor slots that match the encoded input slots. The distributor range here is 16, set by distributor.range. It respects the blocking mode of the Unpackager that feeds it. If any target inventory becomes invalid, it ejects all pending items on top of itself, or into the network if it is connected to an ME network.[10][19]
Fluids and Volume Packages
Volume Packages hold bulk materials such as fluids, and can be inserted or unpackaged into matching containers. The Fluid Package Filler makes the fluid ones. Place it next to a fluid container, put a template fluid container inside, and set how much fluid the package should hold. A redstone signal then creates the package, which is ejected into adjacent inventories. The filler needs power.[14][15]
Power
The Packager, Packager Extension, Package Crafter, Fluid Package Filler and Unpackager use FE. This pack leaves every value at the mod default. Each of the first four holds 5,000 FE, uses 500 FE per operation and draws at most 100 FE/t. The Unpackager also holds 5,000 FE, but uses 50 per operation. They refresh every 4 ticks.[19]
- Capacity: packager.energy_capacity and the matching keys for the other machines.[19]
- Energy per operation: packager.energy_req (Unpackager: unpackager.energy_usage).[19]
- Maximum draw: packager.energy_usage.[19]
- Refresh interval in ticks: packager.refresh_interval.[19]
The Packager, Packager Extension, Package Crafter and Unpackager can also draw energy from an ME system. This is enabled in the pack, for example through packager.draw_me_energy.[19]
ME network integration
Connected to an ME network, the Packager needs a channel. It draws power from the network, offers packaging as autocrafting, and sends its packages into the network instead of adjacent inventories. The Packager Extension behaves the same way. The Unpackager also needs a channel and offers unpackaging as autocrafting once you give it an encoded holder. The Package Crafter extracts power and sends crafted items into the network.[5][6][8][13]
The ME Packaging Provider combines Packager and Unpackager functions and must be on an ME network with a channel. With an encoded holder inside, it provides recipes depending on three settings:[12][13]
- Direct provides the recipe as one large processing recipe, skipping the packaging and unpackaging steps.[12]
- Packaging provides packaging recipes like a Packager.[12]
- Unpackaging provides unpackaging recipes like an Unpackager.[12]
Machines that provide autocrafting can treat Volume Package contents as autocrafting inputs and outputs, and can create those packages directly.[15]
Copying settings
The Packaging Settings Cloner copies settings from one machine and pastes them onto another of the same type. What it copies depends on the machine:[16]
- Packager: the mode and the current recipes. To paste recipes, the target must have none, and you need an empty Package Recipe Holder in your inventory.[5]
- Packager Extension: the mode.[13]
- Unpackager: the blocking mode, tracker count and recipes, with the same rule for pasting recipes.[6]
- ME Packaging Provider: the providing settings and recipes, with the same rule for pasting recipes.[12]
- Crafting Proxy and Positioned Package Distributor: the target settings. Pasting needs an empty Proxy Marker or enough empty Distributor Markers in your inventory.[10][21]
Pack-specific recipes
The pack changed several recipes. These are the Package Crafter, Packager, Packager Extension, Unpackager, ME Packaging Provider and ME Packaging Component. Here are the in-pack recipes for the two core machines.[17]

How do you progress through PackagedAuto?
4 parts
Unverified The sources here show no quests in this pack that cover PackagedAuto, so there is no quest-guided path for it. The order below follows the in-pack recipes and what each machine needs.
The basic idea is simple: you encode recipes into holders, a Packager turns ingredients into Recipe Packages, and an Unpackager sends them where they need to go. In this pack, the progression is mostly about which crafting component each machine asks for.[3][5][6]
Early tier: Packaging Component and the basics
Everything starts with the Packaging Component. This one is a plain mod recipe, so it works as the mod intends. Most of the other recipes in this section use it.[17][22]
Crafting Shaped

With that, you can build the early tools. All of these are unchanged mod recipes:[17]
- Package Recipe Encoder: encodes recipes into Package Recipe Holders. You pick a recipe type, set the inputs and outputs, and save.[4][17]
- Package Recipe Holder: holds the encoded recipe data that machines read.[17][18]
- Packaging Settings Cloner: copies and pastes settings between supported packaging machines.[16][17]
- Fluid Package Filler: makes Volume Packages filled with fluids. It needs power and a redstone signal to create a package.[14][17]
Middle tier: ME Packaging Component and the core machines
The pack changed the recipes for the core machines, so this is where it differs from a plain install. The ME Packaging Component recipe is itself pack-changed, and it builds on the Packaging Component from the early tier.[17]

The pack-changed recipes for the Packager, Packager Extension, Unpackager and Package Crafter all use the ME Packaging Component as a key ingredient. That makes it the gate for the middle of the mod.[17]

- Packager: packages items into Recipe Packages using encoded holders. It needs power and can connect to an ME Network, where it needs a channel.[5][17]
- Unpackager: unpackages sets of Recipe Packages into adjacent inventories or package crafting machines. It needs power and can also connect to an ME Network with a channel.[6][17]
- Packager Extension: copies the function of a nearby Packager, so you need fewer holders when parallelizing packaging.[13][17]
- Package Crafter: the machine for the Crafting recipe type. It crafts anything a crafting table can make, and it can eject results into an ME Network.[8][17]

Top of the ME line: ME Packaging Provider
The ME Packaging Provider is the top of the ME line. Its pack-changed recipe takes a finished Packager and Unpackager, so you need both of those machines first.[17]
Crafting Shaped

It combines the Packager and Unpackager in one block and must be connected to an ME Network, using a channel. Its settings let you provide Direct, Packaging and/or Unpackaging recipes. Direct treats a package recipe as one large processing recipe and skips the packaging and unpackaging steps.[12]
Specialized recipe types and long-range tools
Once the core machines work, the recipe type you choose in the encoder decides what else you need. Processing is the most basic type. Ordered Processing keeps ingredient order and only inserts into empty slots. Crafting uses the Package Crafter.[7][8][9][11]
Positioned Processing sends items into separate inventories through a Positioned Package Distributor. You bind Distributor Marker items to inventories and put them in the distributor's slots. These are unchanged mod recipes, and they also need the Packaging Component.[10][17]

How does PackagedAuto work with other mods?
4 parts
PackagedAuto is an addon for Applied Energistics 2, and that's the mod it connects to in this pack. The in-game guide says much of PackagedAuto is designed with AE2 integration in mind. The idea is to autocraft recipes with more than 9 items by moving them around as packages. The mod can run without AE2, but installing it alongside AE2 is recommended.[1][3]
Crafted with AE2 parts
The two ME-specific items, the ME Packaging Component and the ME Packaging Provider, are crafted with AE2 materials in this pack. Both recipes are marked as changed by the pack, so don't assume they match the mod's defaults. Check the recipes below in-game.[17]

A Guide Book recipe
There is also a pack-changed recipe that produces the Guide Book and involves a PackagedAuto item. It's a cheap way to get the in-game guide.[17]
What changes on an ME network
Once a machine is connected to an ME Network, it can offer packaging as autocrafting. The guide describes the behavior machine by machine:[5][6][12][13]
- The Packager needs a channel on the network. It draws power from the network, provides packaging as autocrafting, and ejects finished Recipe Packages into the network instead of adjacent inventories.[5]
- The Unpackager also needs a channel. It draws power from the network and provides unpackaging as autocrafting. Put an encoded Package Recipe Holder inside to enable this for the encoded recipes.[6]
- The ME Packaging Provider combines the Packager and Unpackager and must be connected to an ME Network, using a channel. Its settings let it provide Direct, Packaging and/or Unpackaging recipes. Direct provides the recipe as one large processing recipe and skips the packaging and unpackaging steps.[12]
- The Packager Extension can be connected to an ME Network too. It draws power, provides packaging as autocrafting, and ejects created packages into the network. It copies a nearby Packager within a 3x3x3 area.[13]
JEI and EMI
The Package Recipe Encoder has recipe-viewer support. With JEI, you can press the Move Items button to quickly encode a recipe. With EMI, the Fill Recipe button does the same job. Both are described in the mod's own guide, so they depend on which viewer you have installed.[4]
Which PackagedAuto config options matter?
4 parts
All of PackagedAuto's settings live in one file, config/packagedauto-server.toml. Every value in this pack that lists a mod default matches that default, so the pack hasn't changed any of the numbers below.[19]
Energy settings
Each machine has energy options for how much FE it can hold, how much FE one operation costs in total, and the maximum FE per tick it can use. The Package Crafter, Packager, Packager Extension and Fluid Package Filler all share the same values in this pack.[19]
- Capacity is 5,000 FE, set by crafter.energy_capacity, packager.energy_capacity, packager_extension.energy_capacity and fluid_package_filler.energy_capacity.[19]
- Energy per operation is 500 FE, set by crafter.energy_req, packager.energy_req, packager_extension.energy_req and fluid_package_filler.energy_req.[19]
- Maximum draw is 100 FE/t, set by crafter.energy_usage, packager.energy_usage, packager_extension.energy_usage and fluid_package_filler.energy_usage.[19]
- The Unpackager is cheaper. It holds 5,000 FE via unpackager.energy_capacity, and unpackager.energy_usage is 50, the same as the mod default.[19]
Drawing power from your ME network
The Package Crafter, Packager, Packager Extension and Unpackager can all pull energy from an ME system, and this pack has that turned on for each of them: crafter.draw_me_energy, packager.draw_me_energy, packager_extension.draw_me_energy and unpackager.draw_me_energy are all true.[19]
Speed and range
- Every machine waits 4 ticks between refreshes, which is the mod default. See crafter.refresh_interval and packager.refresh_interval for examples. The allowed range is 1 to 40.[19]
- crafting_proxy.range is 8 for the Package Crafting Machine Proxy, the mod default.[19]
- distributor.range is 16 for the Positioned Package Distributor, also the mod default.[19]
Package Recipe Encoder
encoder.pattern_slots is 20, which is both the mod default and the top of its allowed range (1 to 20). encoder.disabled_recipe_types is an empty list, so the pack disables no recipe types in the encoder.[19]
What changed in PackagedAuto between versions?
FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships PackagedAuto 4.0.8.21, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.1 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]
- 4.0.8.21 (the version in this pack): better validity checks in core recipe handling.[2][23]
- 4.0.7.20: the fallback recipe type is now ordered processing, and invalid recipes no longer count as empty in unpackager trackers.[24]
- 4.0.7.19: JEI subtype interpreters are now registered for packages.[25]
- 4.0.6.17: fixed the zh_tw "fluid" translation, removed an unnecessary fluid package filler item condition, and reverted the addition of an mB translation key.[26]
- 4.0.6.16: amount specifying gained multiply and divide, and volume types can now set custom increments. The encoder output item stack limit and the settable volume stack limit were both raised to a hard cap of 1 billion. Encoder item drag was improved, and saving large item stacks with a size above 32,767 was fixed.[27]
- 4.0.5.14: changed how encoder slots are reset and fixed the marker tooltip.[28]
- 4.0.5.13: a texture update, made with help from MHanHanBing.[29]
- 4.0.4.12: block strength values were adjusted.[30]
- 4.0.4.10: fixed the packager not properly sending items to extensions.[31]
The biggest change for day-to-day use is probably 4.0.6.16. If you work with huge amounts, the 1 billion cap and the fix for saving stacks above 32,767 matter, and the multiply and divide options make setting those amounts quicker.[27]
