What is Model Gap Fix?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Model Gap Fix is a small client-side mod that fixes a long-standing Mojang bug, MC-73186. That bug shows up as thin gaps in block models and item models, and possibly in other models too.[1]

The fix is simple. The mod removes texture zooming, so every model face uses 100% of its texture instead of a slightly zoomed-in part of it.[1]

Who it's for

Everyone who plays the pack benefits, and you don't have to do anything. The gaps were most noticeable on custom block models and on some 2D items, and the mod cleans those up automatically.[1]

What it does for 2D items

Removing zoom alone creates another kind of tiny, flickering gap in 2D item models, because they are generated quad by quad. To cover those, the mod changes the item model generator. It never makes a quad that covers a transparent pixel, and it builds multiple quads for each row of solid pixels instead. That lets it slightly enlarge the side quads without opening new gaps. According to the mod's page, this extra step only applies on Forge, because Fabric doesn't get those tiny lines.[1]

Will it hurt performance?

No. Removing texture zooming just removes some code and has no real impact. The item model tweak can add a couple more quads for concave item textures compared to vanilla. The author calls that negligible, and says it could only matter with high-resolution resource packs.[1]

In this pack

The pack ships Model Gap Fix version 1.21-1.10 as the file modelfix-1.21-1.10.jar. It was already included in earlier releases of the pack.[2]

Unverified The sources don't show any recipes, quests, configs or progression role for this mod, so there is nothing to unlock or craft. It is a background fix rather than part of the pack's progression.

How do you get started with Model Gap Fix?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing to craft to get started with Model Gap Fix. It's a simple client-side mod that fixes the Mojang bug MC-73186, which causes gaps in block models and item models. It works on its own, so you don't need to set anything up.[1]

What it does for you

The mod removes texture zooming, so every model face uses 100% of its texture. That closes the gaps on items, where they're most noticeable, and on block models too. The gaps were especially visible on custom block models and some 2D items, which is handy in a pack with lots of modded content.[1]

For 2D item models, the mod also changes how the item model generator builds its quads. It no longer creates a quad that covers a transparent pixel, and instead makes multiple quads for each row of solid pixels. That covers the tiny flickering gaps that removing texture zooming alone would leave. The source says this last part only applies on Forge.[1]

Tip: Performance isn't a concern. Removing texture zooming just removes some code. The item model change could add a couple more quads for concave item textures compared to vanilla, but the author calls that negligible and says it would only matter with high-resolution packs.[1]

What to do first

  1. Load into the world as usual. The fix applies to rendering automatically, so there's no item to make or quest to start.[1]
  2. Look closely at a 2D item or a custom block model. Any seams or gaps that vanilla rendering would show should no longer appear.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't confirm any items, recipes, quests or config options for this mod in this pack, so there are no recipes to show here. If you see something different in game, treat it as unconfirmed.

How does Model Gap Fix work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

Model Gap Fix has no machines, multiblocks, power or automation. It is a simple client-side mod that fixes a long-standing vanilla rendering bug where tiny gaps show up in block models and item models, and possibly other models too. This section covers how that fix works and which settings control it.[1]

The base fix: no more texture zooming

The core of the mod is simple: it removes texture zooming, so every model face uses 100% of its texture instead of a slightly shrunk version. That alone cleans up the gaps on block models and anything else that uses the same rendering functions. You'll notice it most on custom block models and some 2D items.[1]

How 2D item models are rebuilt

Flat items needed extra work. Vanilla builds 2D item models quad by quad, and removing texture zooming on its own leaves very tiny, flickering lines in them. To fix this, the mod changes the item model generator so it never creates a quad that covers a transparent pixel. Instead it creates multiple quads, one for each row of solid pixels facing the same direction.[1]

Because no quad spans a transparent pixel anymore, the mod can make all those side quads slightly larger without opening up new gaps. The result is a seamless edge on your items. The author notes that this item-model step is only used on Forge, because Fabric doesn't show those tiny lines in the first place.[1]

Performance

Removing texture zooming just removes some code, so it has no performance cost. The rebuilt item models can add a couple of extra quads on items with concave textures compared to vanilla. The author calls this negligible and says it could only matter with high-resolution texture packs.[1]

The client config

All tuning lives in the client config and only affects how models look on your screen. This pack leaves every Model Gap Fix option at the mod's default value, so what you see is the mod exactly as the author ships it.[3]

  • default.item_quads_indent is set to 0.007 in this pack (range -0.1 to 0.1). It shifts each quad toward the center of the item to hide gaps.[3]
  • default.item_quads_expansion is set to 0 in this pack (range -0.1 to 0.1). It enlarges each quad to hide gaps. Any value other than 0 slightly increases the number of quads per item model, which could be an issue with HD texture packs.[3]
Tip: If you still spot gaps on items, the config suggests trying 0.002 or 0.008 for the quad expansion. Keep both the indent and the expansion as close to 0 as you can.[3]

macOS settings

Some macOS systems have been reported to suffer from atlas bleeding, so on those systems the mod can't apply its main fix of removing atlas shrinking. It uses a separate set of options there, which reduce the shrinking as much as possible instead.[3]

  • mac_os.shrink_ratio_multiplier is set to 1 in this pack (range 0.0 to 1.0). A value of 1 keeps vanilla behavior to prevent atlas bleeding, and 0 gives the non-macOS behavior.[3]
  • mac_os.item_quads_indent is set to 0.0099 in this pack (range -0.1 to 0.1). It moves quads toward the center of the item to hide gaps.[3]
  • mac_os.item_quads_expansion is set to 0 in this pack (range -0.1 to 0.1). It enlarges each quad to hide gaps. As with the default version, non-zero values slightly increase the quad count per item model.[3]

Unverified The sources don't say exactly how the mod decides whether the macOS options or the default options apply on your system, or which of the Forge-specific item-model changes are active on NeoForge.

Which Model Gap Fix config options matter?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

Model Gap Fix is a client-side mod, so everything lives in one file on your side: config/modelfix-client.toml. The pack ships it with every value left at the mod's defaults, so if item models look right to you, there is nothing you need to touch here.[1][3]

The default section

These two are the ones almost everyone ends up in. default.item_quads_indent is set to 0.007 in this pack, matching the mod default. It nudges each quad's x/y offset toward the centre of the item, which is what hides the tiny gaps in 2D item models.[3]

default.item_quads_expansion is 0 in this pack, again the mod default. It enlarges each quad instead of shifting it, and the config itself suggests trying 0.002 or 0.008 if you still see gaps. Both options accept anything from -0.1 to 0.1.[3]

Watch out: Keep both values as close to 0 as you can. Raising expansion above 0 slightly increases the number of quads per item model, which the config notes could be an issue with HD texture packs.[3]

The mac_os section

There is a separate block of settings for macOS, because some Mac systems get atlas bleeding, which stops the mod from applying its main fix of removing atlas shrinking. Instead it reduces the shrinking as much as it can by multiplying it.[3]

Tip: If you are not on a Mac, the mac_os values do not affect you, so leave them alone and only tweak the default section.[3]

Worried about performance? The mod's own answer is that removing texture zooming just removes some code and has no impact. The extra quads it can generate for concave item textures are negligible, and only likely to matter if you are running high resolution packs.[1]

What changed in Model Gap Fix between versions?

There isn't much version history to tell for Model Gap Fix in this pack, and that's a good thing for a small fix mod. FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Model Gap Fix 1.21-1.10, and the mod has been in the pack since FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier.[4]

The mod's own changelog for 1.21-1.10 has a single entry: it fixed an issue on NeoForge. No more detail is given about what the issue was.[5]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so any changes to it between FTB Skies 2 releases are unverified.
