What is Magic Coins?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Magic Coins is an economy mod that adds a simple, RPG-style coin system to Minecraft while staying close to the vanilla feel. It adds three physical coins: Silver Coin, Gold Coin and Crystal Coin. You can use them to trade with other players. The mod is aimed at players who want a more immersive RPG experience, and at modpack makers who want to customize villager trades.[1][2]

This pack ships Magic Coins 1.1.3. From version 1.1.0 on, the mod uses the SG Economy API, which is required. SG Economy handles the virtual wallet and the economy commands, while Magic Coins provides the item-based side. So the coins can sit on top of a virtual balance instead of being the only form of money.[1][3]

What the mod gives you

  • Coins can drop from the loot tables of vanilla structures. The mod lets this be turned off in its config.[1]
  • Each coin type has its own configurable value.[1]
  • The inventory screen has buttons to deposit and withdraw coins. Their positions are adjustable, and there are optional coin conversion buttons that are off by default.[1]
  • The Prosperity Amulet is a magical artifact that stops the loss of coins stored in the pouch when you die. By default the mod takes 50% of your stored balance on death, and the amulet removes that penalty.[1]

Where it fits in this pack

In this pack, the coins show up mainly in the shop quests. The ftb_shop quest chapter has a long list of quests whose tasks are silver, gold or crystal coins. The entry quest a quest in "?" asks for a silver coin, and the other coin quests in that chapter listed in the sources all come after it. Some of them need only one coin type, and some ask for two, for example a quest in "?" with crystal and gold coins.[2]

Tip: Coins are your currency for the shop quests, so keep the ones you find in structure loot instead of throwing them away.[1][2]

How do you get started with Magic Coins?

5 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Magic Coins adds a simple coin economy with three physical coins: the Silver Coin, the Gold Coin and the Crystal Coin. Getting started here is less about crafting and more about finding coins and knowing where they get used.[1][2]

Step 1: Don't look for a recipe

No recipes produce any of this mod's items in the pack, so there is no recipe block to show you. You can't craft your first coins. You have to find them.[2]

Step 2: Find your first coins

According to the mod's project page, coins can come from the loot tables of vanilla structures, and this can be disabled in the config. Exploring structures is the mod's intended way to get coins.[1]

Unverified Whether the pack leaves coin generation in structure loot enabled, and which other sources of coins exist in the pack, could not be confirmed from the available sources.

Step 3: Check what a coin is worth

Each coin type has its own value, and the item description shows it as a dollar amount. Hover over a coin to read its value. The mod's default is that values are configurable per coin type, but the pack's actual values are not confirmed in the sources, so trust the tooltip in your own game.[1][4]

Step 4: Put a coin toward the shop quests

The pack's ftb_shop quest chapter is built around these coins. The entry quest a quest in "?" has a silver coin as its task. Many other quests in that chapter come after it, so it is the one to complete first. Those later quests ask for silver, gold or crystal coins, and some ask for two coin types at once.[2]

For example, a quest in "?" wants a silver coin and a quest in "?" wants a gold coin. a quest in "?" wants a crystal coin. Each of these only needs a quest in "?" done first.[2]

Step 5: Use the inventory buttons and think about death

The mod adds deposit and withdraw buttons to the inventory screen, so you can move coins between your inventory and your balance. The mod also has optional coin conversion buttons, which are disabled by default. I can't confirm whether the pack turns them on.[1]

Watch out: By default you lose 50% of your stored balance when you die. The Prosperity Amulet cancels that penalty completely while it is equipped. Its tooltip also says it grants regeneration I for 3 seconds when your health drops below 50%. These are the mod's default values. The pack's own death-loss setting is not confirmed in the sources.[1][4]

How does Magic Coins work?

6 parts

Magic Coins is an economy mod, so there are no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids to set up. Everything revolves around three physical coins, a pouch that holds your balance, and an amulet that protects it. Here is how it works in this pack.[1]

The three coins and their values

The mod adds silver, gold and crystal coins. Each coin's tooltip shows its value, and each value is set in the server config. This pack changed two of the three values, so don't rely on the mod's defaults.[1][5][6]

The allowed ranges are 1 to 100 for silver, 1 to 500 for gold and 1 to 25,000 for crystal.[6]

Getting coins

The mod can generate coins in the loot tables of vanilla structures, and this can be turned off in the config. In this pack LOOTS.coinsLootChests is set to false, so you shouldn't expect to find coins in chests.[1][6]

Unverified No recipes that produce Magic Coins items were found in the sources, and the sources don't say how else you can earn coins in this pack, for example through villager trades or quests.

The pouch and the inventory interface

Your coins are stored as a balance in a pouch. The mod page describes inventory buttons to deposit and withdraw coins, with adjustable positions. Coin conversion buttons are optional and disabled by default. The page doesn't say whether this pack changed any of these interface options.[1]

Dying with coins

The config option DEATH.percentageCoinsSaveOnDeath is set to 50 in this pack, which matches the mod default. The mod page says players lose 50% of their stored balance on death by default.[1][6]

The Prosperity Amulet is the answer to that penalty. According to the mod page, with the amulet equipped the loss on death is completely negated. Its tooltip says it protects the coins in your pouch if you die. It also grants regeneration I for 3 seconds when your health is below 50%.[1][5]

Tip: If you carry a big balance, get the Prosperity Amulet before you take risks. Without it you lose part of your pouch each time you die.[1]

Unverified No recipe or other way to obtain the Prosperity Amulet was found in the sources, so how you get it in this pack is unconfirmed.

SG Economy and commands

Since version 1.1.0, Magic Coins requires the SG Economy API. SG Economy provides a persistent virtual wallet for each player, supports integer and decimal balances, and handles the economy commands and rules. Those commands are meant for server admins and include balance checks, add, set and remove balance, and player-to-player transfers. The mod page says loss on death is also managed by SG Economy.[1]

Unverified The sources don't say which Magic Coins version this pack ships, so it's unconfirmed whether the SG Economy details above apply exactly as written.

Automation

The sources say nothing about automating coins with pipes, hoppers or machines, and there are no multiblocks or power systems to configure. Treat coins as a player-focused currency unless you find otherwise in game.[1]

How do you progress through Magic Coins?

3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Magic Coins doesn't have a tier ladder of its own in this pack. Its coins show up as quest tasks in the shop chapter of the quest book, where you hand in Silver Coin, Gold Coin and Crystal Coin. The quests are untitled, so you'll recognise them by their coin tasks and their position in the chapter.[2]

Where it all starts

Everything begins with quest a quest in "?", which asks for a Silver Coin. Every other coin quest in the chapter lists it as a prerequisite, so you can't skip it. Quest a quest in "?" is a good first follow-up: it also asks for a Silver Coin and depends only on that first quest.[2]

How the coin quests branch

After the first quest, the chapter splits into many branches. Some quests only need the first quest done. Others also need one or more additional quests in the chapter, and each of those is a coin quest too. Here are a few examples of what that looks like:[2]

  • Silver only: a quest in "?" asks for a Silver Coin and unlocks right after the first quest.[2]
  • Gold only: a quest in "?" asks for a Gold Coin and also unlocks right after the first quest.[2]
  • Crystal only: a quest in "?" asks for a Crystal Coin and also needs nothing beyond the first quest.[2]
  • Mixed tasks: a quest in "?" asks for both a Crystal Coin and a Silver Coin, and a quest in "?" asks for both a Crystal Coin and a Gold Coin. The second one also needs another quest in the chapter.[2]
  • Extra prerequisites: a quest in "?" asks for a Crystal Coin, but you also have to finish another quest in the chapter first.[2]

The quest file shows that the three coin types are used in different quests, and some quests ask for two types at once. It doesn't rank the coins into an official tier order, so don't assume silver, gold and crystal are meant to be done in a fixed sequence.[2]

What's not covered

I can't point you to any crafting recipe for these coins, because the pack data I have shows no recipes that produce this mod's items. The mod is also not on the ATM Star quest path.[2]

Unverified How you actually obtain Silver, Gold and Crystal Coins in this pack, what each coin is worth, and whether the coins convert into one another are not confirmed by the available sources.

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Magic Coins?

3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

In this pack, Magic Coins shows up in a single quest chapter, called "ftb_shop". Every quest in it uses one of the mod's coins as its task, so the chapter is basically a long list of coin quests. None of the quests have a title.[2]

Where the chapter starts

The entry point is quest a quest in "?", which asks for a Silver Coin. Every other quest in the chapter lists it as a prerequisite, so you have to finish it before anything else unlocks.[2]

Quests unlocked right after the first one

Some quests need nothing except that first quest. They are the ones you can pick up straight away, and they are split by coin type:[2]

Quests with a second prerequisite

Most of the chapter sits deeper than that. These quests need the first quest plus one more quest. Examples are a quest in "?" for a Crystal Coin and a quest in "?" for a Gold Coin. In every case I checked, the extra prerequisite is a quest I have no details on, so I can't tell you what it asks for.[2]

Several quests ask for more than one coin type. a quest in "?" wants a Crystal Coin and a Gold Coin. a quest in "?" and a quest in "?" each want a Gold Coin and a Silver Coin.[2]

Tip: Silver, gold and crystal coins all appear as tasks in this chapter. Finish the first Silver Coin quest early, because nothing else in the chapter opens without it.[2]

Unverified The required coin amounts, whether the coins are consumed when you submit them, and any rewards for these quests are not confirmed. Check the in-game quest book before you spend your coins.

Which Magic Coins config options matter?

3 parts

Magic Coins keeps its settings in one file, config/magic_coins-server.toml. The big thing to know is that this pack changed how much the higher coins are worth, so don't trust numbers from the mod's own description or other packs.[6]

Coin values

Each coin type has a value setting, and the pack lowered two of them from the mod defaults.[6]

Tip: A crystal coin is worth far less here than in the mod's default setup. Expect a much flatter coin economy than the mod's own page might suggest.[6]

Dying with coins

DEATH.percentageCoinsSaveOnDeath is set to 50, which is also the mod default, so the pack did not change it. The allowed range is 0 to 100. The config describes it as the percentage of coins saved on death.[6]

The mod's own description says players lose 50% of their stored balance on death by default. It also adds a Prosperity Amulet that completely negates that penalty for coins stored in the pouch.[1]

Coins in chests

LOOTS.coinsLootChests is set to false in this pack, so coins are not lootable from chests. The config file does not list a mod default for this option, so I can't say whether the pack changed it.[6]

What changed in Magic Coins between versions?

3 parts

FTB Skies 2 1.13.2 ships Magic Coins 1.0.9. The mod was already in the pack as of FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[7]

1.0.9 (the version in this pack)

  • Magnates Ranking: a new leaderboard that shows the wealthiest players.[8]
  • Command feedback: the add, set and get commands now all return messages. Get is available to all players, while add and set are restricted to admins.[8]
  • Coin tooltips: each coin now shows its value directly in the tooltip.[8]
  • Prosperity Amulet: when death-coin-loss is enabled, it prevents coin loss. When death-coin-loss is disabled, it grants Regeneration I for 3s if you are below 50% HP when hit. The tooltip now shows the current effect.[8]
  • Mod integration: fixes and adjustments to make the mod easier to integrate into modpacks and with other mods.[8]
  • Bug fix: ghost coins when joining servers.[8]
  • Bug fix: shutting down the server could make the config file fail to load, which brought the ghost coins back.[8]
  • Bug fix: a texture sprite error with FTB Quests, contributed by MichaelHillcox.[8]

1.0.8

A small release. The changelog only says that bugs were fixed and that some mistaken GitHub requests were corrected.[9]

1.0.7

  • Fixed bugs related to the display of your money count.[10]
  • Balanced the loot distribution in chests.[10]
  • Optimized the loot definition system for better performance and consistency.[10]
