What is Inventory Essentials?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide
Inventory Essentials is a quality-of-life mod. It adds the inventory controls that have become a standard in modded Minecraft: drag-to-transfer, single-item moves and inventory sorting. It adds no new blocks, machines or progression of its own, so it's for anyone who is tired of clicking through chests and storage.[1]
What you can do with it
- Control-click an item to quick-move a single item instead of the whole stack.[1]
- Shift-control click an item to quick-move every stack of that item type. For example, you can pull all the cobblestone out of a chest in one go.[1]
- Hold shift and move the mouse over items to quick-move them without clicking each one.[1]
- Hold a mouse button while dragging a bundle to insert or empty items as you pass over them.[1]
- Middle-click inside an inventory to sort it.[1]
The sorting feature is listed for Minecraft 26.1 and newer, and the pack ships Inventory Essentials 26.1.2.5 for NeoForge, so it matches that range.[1][2]
Client and server
The mod is optional on both client and server. Only the players who want these controls need it, and if the server doesn't have it, it still works for clients who do. The mod requires Balm to be installed alongside it.[1]
Unverified The sources don't show any quests for this mod, or a place for it on the ATM Star path, so there is nothing to unlock. Treat it as a convenience mod that isn't tied to progression.
How do you get started with Inventory Essentials?
2 parts
Good news: there's nothing to craft here. Inventory Essentials is a pure quality-of-life mod that changes how you move items around in inventories, so your first steps are learning a few clicks rather than building anything.[1]
It also needs Balm installed alongside it. On the client side it's optional: if a server doesn't have the mod, it still works for players who do have it installed.[1]
The first controls to learn
- Control-click an item to quick-move just one item instead of the whole stack.[1]
- Shift-control click an item to quick-move every stack of that item type, for example all the cobblestone from a chest into your inventory.[1]
- Hold shift and move your cursor over items to quick-move them without clicking each one.[1]
- Hold a mouse button while dragging a bundle over items to insert them or empty it as you pass over.[1]
- Middle-click inside an inventory to sort it.[1]
Optional behaviours
The mod has settings for two extra behaviours. One decides whether Transfer All moves every item even when you click an empty slot. The other decides whether space-clicking armor in your inventory swaps you to all the matching armor. I can't confirm the pack's values for either from the sources I have, so check the in-game config if you want to know how they're set.[3]
Unverified The project page says middle-click sorting is available on certain Minecraft versions only, and it isn't confirmed here whether this pack's version is one of them. If middle-click does nothing for you, that may be why.
How does Inventory Essentials work?
3 parts
Inventory Essentials doesn't add machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or automation. It's a quality-of-life mod that changes how you move items around in inventories, so the mechanics here are all about clicks and keybinds.[1]
Moving items faster
- Control-click an item to quick-move just a single item instead of the whole stack.[1]
- Shift-control click an item to quick-move every stack of that item type, for example all the cobblestone from a chest into your inventory.[1]
- Hold shift and move your cursor over items to quick-move them without clicking each one.[1]
- Hold a mouse button while dragging a bundle to insert or empty items as you pass over them.[1]
- Middle-click in an inventory to sort it.[1]
Unverified The project page says middle-click sorting works on certain Minecraft versions only (1.20.1, 1.21.1 and 26.1+). The sources don't say which of these this pack runs on, so check that sorting works in your game.
Pack config
The mod has a common config, and these are the values the pack sets. They all matter for how bulk transfers behave.[4]
- allowBulkTransferAllOnEmptySlot is set to false in this pack. That means Transfer All does not move all items when you click an empty slot.[3][4]
- bulkTransferArmorSets is set to true in this pack. Space-clicking armor in your inventory swaps to all the matching armor pieces.[3][4]
- forceClientImplementation is set to false in this pack. It makes the client implementation run even on servers that have the mod, and the mod says it's only useful for development, so leave it alone.[3][4]
Keybinds and client/server use
If you want to turn off one of the mod's features, go into your Controls and unbind the matching Inventory Essentials key. The old per-feature config options were replaced by this.[3]
The mod is optional on both client and server. Only the players who want it need to install it, and it still works for clients who have it even if the server doesn't. It requires Balm to be installed alongside it.[1]
Which Inventory Essentials config options matter?
Inventory Essentials only has a small common config in this pack, so there isn't much to tweak. Here are the three options in config/inventoryessentials-common.toml and how the pack sets them.[4]
- allowBulkTransferAllOnEmptySlot is set to false in this pack. It controls whether space-clicking moves all items even when you click an empty slot. With false, clicking an empty slot won't trigger that bulk move.[4]
- bulkTransferArmorSets is set to true in this pack. It controls whether space-clicking armor in your inventory swaps to all matching armor, so you can change a whole armor set in one go.[4]
- forceClientImplementation is set to false in this pack. It makes the mod use its client implementation even on servers that have the mod installed. The config describes it as only useful for development purposes, so leave it alone.[4]
Unverified The sources don't show the mod's own default values, so I can't confirm whether the pack changed any of these three options from the default.
