What is Inventory Essentials?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Inventory Essentials is a quality-of-life mod. It adds the inventory controls that have become a standard in modded Minecraft: drag-to-transfer, single-item moves and inventory sorting. It adds no new blocks, machines or progression of its own, so it's for anyone who is tired of clicking through chests and storage.[1]

What you can do with it

  • Control-click an item to quick-move a single item instead of the whole stack.[1]
  • Shift-control click an item to quick-move every stack of that item type. For example, you can pull all the cobblestone out of a chest in one go.[1]
  • Hold shift and move the mouse over items to quick-move them without clicking each one.[1]
  • Hold a mouse button while dragging a bundle to insert or empty items as you pass over them.[1]
  • Middle-click inside an inventory to sort it.[1]

The sorting feature is listed for Minecraft 26.1 and newer, and the pack ships Inventory Essentials 26.1.2.5 for NeoForge, so it matches that range.[1][2]

Client and server

The mod is optional on both client and server. Only the players who want these controls need it, and if the server doesn't have it, it still works for clients who do. The mod requires Balm to be installed alongside it.[1]

Tip: Sorting is a middle-click, so try it on a chest or backpack-style storage the next time your inventory turns into a mess.[1]

Unverified The sources don't show any quests for this mod, or a place for it on the ATM Star path, so there is nothing to unlock. Treat it as a convenience mod that isn't tied to progression.

How do you get started with Inventory Essentials?

3 parts

Good news: Inventory Essentials doesn't need any crafting at all. It adds inventory controls, not items, so there's nothing to make first. The pack has no recipes for it and no quests for it either. Your first steps are just learning a few clicks that will save you a lot of time when you're sorting chests.[1]

The mod works on the client, so you only need it installed if you want to use it. It also needs Balm installed alongside it.[1]

Moving items faster

  1. Control-click an item to quick-move just one item instead of the whole stack. This is handy when you only need a single item from a chest.[1][3]
  2. Shift-control click an item to quick-move every stack of that item type. For example, you can pull all the cobblestone out of a chest into your inventory.[1][3]
  3. Hold shift and move your mouse over items to quick-transfer them without clicking each one.[1][3]
  4. Hold a mouse button while dragging a bundle to insert or empty items as you pass over them.[1]

Bulk actions

The mod also has a few bulk actions, and each one has its own on/off option. Space-clicking an item moves all items from that inventory at once. Control-space-clicking moves one of each item from that inventory. Space-clicking armor in your inventory swaps to all matching armor. Shift-control drop-clicking drops all items of the same type at once.[3]

Watch out: Shift-control drop-clicking drops every item of that type in one go. Be careful with it near lava or when you're carrying something valuable.[3]

Sorting

Middle-clicking a slot can sort the inventory, and the mod has an option to turn this on or off.[1][3]

Unverified The pack's settings for these options are unconfirmed, so a feature in this guide may be turned off here. Middle-click sorting is listed only for certain Minecraft versions, and I can't confirm it applies to this pack's version. If a shortcut doesn't work, check the mod's config in game.

How does Inventory Essentials work?

4 parts

Inventory Essentials has no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or automation. It is a set of inventory-handling tweaks that change what your clicks do when you move items around, so the "mechanics" here are the click combos and the config options that switch them on or off.[1]

The mod needs Balm installed alongside it. It is optional on both client and server: only the players who want the features need it, and if a server doesn't have it, it still works for clients who do.[1]

Moving items with clicks

  • Control-click an item to quick-move a single item instead of the whole stack. This is controlled by enableSingleTransfer, which is on in the pack.[1][3][4]
  • Shift-control-click an item to quick-move every stack of that item type, for example all the cobblestone from a chest into your inventory. This is enableBulkTransfer, which is on in the pack.[1][3][4]
  • Hold shift and move your mouse over items to quick-transfer them without clicking each one. This is enableShiftDrag, which is on in the pack.[1][3][4]
  • Shift-control-drop-click to drop all items of the same type at once. This is enableBulkDrop, which is on in the pack.[3][4]

Space-click transfers

The mod also has space-click actions. Space-clicking an item moves all items from that inventory at once, controlled by enableBulkTransferAll, which is on in the pack. Control-space-clicking moves one of each item from that inventory, controlled by enableBulkTransferSingle, also on in the pack.[3][4]

Space-clicking armor in your inventory swaps to all matching armor, via bulkTransferArmorSets, which is on in the pack.[3][4]

The pack sets allowBulkTransferAllOnEmptySlot to false. That means a space-click on an empty slot won't trigger the move-everything action.[3][4]

Sorting

The mod can sort an inventory when you middle-click a slot. The pack ships enableMiddleClickSort set to false, so middle-click sorting is off by default here. If you want it, you have to turn it on in the config.[1][3][4]

Tip: If a click combo isn't doing anything, check the matching option in the mod's common config first. The pack has most of them enabled, but middle-click sort is disabled.[4]

Other options

forceClientImplementation makes the mod use its client implementation even on servers that have it installed. It is only meant for development, and the pack leaves it false.[3][4]

Unverified The mod's project page also mentions holding a mouse button while dragging a bundle to insert or empty items as you pass over them. The pack's config doesn't show an option for this, so whether it is available or adjustable in this pack is unverified.

Which Inventory Essentials config options matter?

3 parts

Inventory Essentials has a small common config, and almost every option is a simple on/off switch for one inventory shortcut. This pack leaves nearly all of them on. The one that matters most is that middle-click sorting is turned off.[4]

Sorting is off

enableMiddleClickSort is set to false in this pack. The mod itself offers middle-click sorting of an inventory, but here middle-clicking a slot won't sort anything. If you were expecting that from the mod's description, this is why it doesn't work.[1][4]

Unverified The sources don't state the mod's own default for the middle-click sorting option, so we can't confirm whether the pack changed it or just kept the default.

Shortcuts that are enabled

Options left off

allowBulkTransferAllOnEmptySlot is false. Space-clicking an empty slot therefore won't move all the items. You need to click an actual item.[4]

forceClientImplementation is also false. It only makes the mod use its client implementation even on servers that have the mod installed, and the config describes it as useful only for development, so you can leave it alone.[4]

Tip: If you want middle-click sorting, set enableMiddleClickSort to true in config/inventoryessentials-common.toml. The mod supports it, but the pack ships with it off.[1][4]
