What is Compact Machines?

Compact Machines is part of the pack, and this guide covers version 7.0.81, shipped as the NeoForge build compactmachines-neoforge-7.0.81.jar. It has been in the pack since this version or earlier.[1]

Unverified The sources available for this mod only confirm that it is installed and which version it is. They don't describe what it does in this pack, who it suits, or where it fits in progression. They show no quests for it, no place on the ATM Star path, and no pack-specific recipes or config changes. Treat anything beyond the version as unconfirmed until the sources are expanded.

Tip: Check the in-game item list and recipe viewer for items from the compactmachines namespace to see what the pack actually gives you. This guide can't confirm those items or their recipes yet.[1]

How do you get started with Compact Machines?

5 parts

Compact Machines lets you craft a machine block, place it in the world and step inside a pocket dimension. Getting there takes a handful of crafts that build on each other, so the order matters. Here is what to make first and why.[2]

Start with the Compact Machine Wall

Make Compact Machine Wall first. Every machine recipe in the pack uses it, so you need it before you can craft any machine. This one is the mod's own recipe.[3]

8 × Polished Deepslate

Recipe id: compactmachines:wall

Then the two Atom modules

Next come the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. Both go into the Personal Shrinking Device recipe and into every machine recipe, so make them before either of those. Both are the mod's own recipes too.[3]

Craft your Personal Shrinking Device

The Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) is how you get inside. You use it on a placed machine to enter the compact space. The mod also has an advancement for obtaining one.[2]

The recipe uses both Atom modules, which is why they come before it.

Make your first machine

Now you can craft a machine. The pack adds its own machine recipes, and all of them produce New Machine. Each one combines the wall and both Atom modules with one extra material that changes from variant to variant. The recipe ids are tiny, small, normal, large, giant, colossal, farming and soaryn, so check each one and pick a variant you can afford.[3]

The tiny variant, the first of the machine recipes the pack adds.

Place it and step inside

  1. Place the machine in the world.[2]
  2. Use the Personal Shrinking Device on the placed machine to enter its pocket dimension.[2]
Tip: The wall, the modules and the PSD use the mod's own recipes, but the machine recipes are added by the pack. If you know Compact Machines from elsewhere, check the recipe for the machine you want before you gather materials.[3]

How does Compact Machines work?

5 parts

Compact Machines is all about pocket dimensions. You craft a machine, place it in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) on it to step inside. Each machine is bound to a room of a particular size, and that room is where you build.[2]

Getting in and out

The PSD is the key to everything. Use it on a placed machine and you enter the compact space. There is also a keybind called Quick-Exit Compact Machine to get you back out, and another called Open Room Upgrade Screen for managing the room you are standing in.[2]

If you want to know which room a machine belongs to, the mod can tell you: it reports that the machine at a position is bound to a room of a given size at a given location. With the Jade plugin, bound machines and their owners can be shown too, and the owner display can be toggled in Jade's settings.[2]

Watch out: Leaving a room can damage your PSD if the matching gamerule is on. The mod also has gamerules for out-of-bounds survival, creative and spectator players, and one that damages players who are out of bounds. The sources don't give this pack's values for them, so check them in your world before you rely on a room's edges.[2]

Crafting your first machine

Machines are made from the shrinking and enlarging modules plus walls, and the PSD needs both modules too. The pack's recipes for New Machine come in several flavours: tiny, small, normal, large, giant and colossal, plus farming and soaryn variants. All of these were added by the pack, so check the recipe blocks below rather than relying on the mod's defaults.[3]

The building blocks are the Atom Shrinking Module, the Atom Enlarging Module and the Compact Machine Wall. They, and the PSD, use the mod's own recipes, shown below.[3]

The common config has a recipes.vanillaRecipes option, described as enabling vanilla-style recipes. It is set to true in this pack.[4]

Walls and the pack's tweaks

The mod has a breakable Compact Machine Wall and a separate Solid Compact Machine Wall. Be careful with Flint And Steel near a Compact Machine Wall: the pack adds a Lychee interaction there that costs the tool 16 durability and drops Grains of Infinity. The pack also stops the Firestick from working on the solid wall.[2][5]

Room templates and the Spatial Tinkerer

Rooms can come from templates, and a template's tooltip says it generates structures when the room is created. The mod also adds a villager called the Spatial Tinkerer. The sources don't say what it trades.[2]

Admin commands

The server config sets the permission level for four command groups. In this pack all four are at 2 (OP), which is also the mod default, and the allowed range is 0 to 4. The comments in the file say 0 is everyone, 1 is admin, 2 is OP and 4 is owner.[6]

Unverified The sources I have don't explain how power, fluids or items move in and out of a machine room, or how to automate with machines, so none of that is covered here. The room upgrades are also not described beyond the upgrade screen keybind and the command above.

How do you progress through Compact Machines?

3 parts

Compact Machines progression in this pack is all about crafting. You build the shared parts first, then pick which machine tier to make. The pack adds its own recipe for every machine tier.[3]

Unverified No quests in this pack's quest book involve Compact Machines, so there is no quest chapter guiding you through it. The sources here show only the recipes, so they are your roadmap.

First: the shared parts

Every machine recipe in the pack needs a Compact Machine Wall, an Atom Shrinking Module and an Atom Enlarging Module. These parts use the mod's own recipes, so make them before anything else.[3]

Crafting Shaped

8 × Polished Deepslate

Recipe id: compactmachines:wall

The wall uses the mod's own recipe.

The shrinking module uses the mod's own recipe.

The enlarging module uses the mod's own recipe.

Next: the Personal Shrinking Device

The Personal Shrinking Device also needs both modules, so it makes sense to build it right after them. It uses the mod's own recipe.[3]

Then: choose your machine tier

Every tier produces New Machine and is crafted from the wall and both modules plus an extra material. That extra material is what sets the tier. The pack's recipe ids are named tiny, small, normal, large, giant and colossal, plus variants named soaryn and farming. Each recipe card below shows exactly what the pack asks for.[3]

Tiny tier, a recipe added by the pack.

Small tier, a recipe added by the pack.

Normal tier, a recipe added by the pack.

Large tier, a recipe added by the pack.

Giant tier, a recipe added by the pack.

Colossal tier, a recipe added by the pack.

Soaryn variant, a recipe added by the pack.

Farming variant, a recipe added by the pack.

Which Compact Machines config options matter?

2 parts

Compact Machines has only a handful of options, and most of them are about who is allowed to run admin commands. Here is exactly how this pack sets them.[4][6][7]

Client and common settings

Unverified The sources don't list the mod defaults for the client and common options above, so I can't say whether the pack changed them.

Command permission levels

The server config has four command permission levels. Each accepts a value from 0 to 4, and the pack sets all of them to 2. That matches the mod default, so the pack hasn't changed any of them. The description for the rebind option lists the levels as 0 = ALL, 1 = ADMIN, 2 = OP and 4 = OWNER.[6]

Tip: The config description for the rebind option says the admin command settings need a server restart to take effect. Restart after you edit them.[6]
