What is Chance Cubes?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Chance Cubes adds mystical blocks that give you a random reward when you open them. It's a Lucky Block alternative, so you never know what you'll get.[1]

Some rewards are helpful and others can be devastating. They range from hordes of zombies and death traps to rewards that build full houses and hand out next-level items. Each reward has its own twist to keep it interesting.[1]

Who it's for

This mod is for you if you like a bit of risk and surprise in your run. You can find the blocks while exploring, or craft them yourself if you'd rather not go looking. Just be ready for the bad outcomes as well as the good ones.[1]

In this pack

The pack includes Chance Cubes version 1.21.1-5.0.2.517, and it was already present in this pack version or an earlier one.[2]

The mod can load custom rewards from an easy-to-read JSON file format, which is why modpack makers can add their own. Whether this pack adds any custom rewards isn't confirmed by the sources.[1]

Unverified The sources don't say where Chance Cubes fits in the pack's progression, and the mod isn't on the ATM Star path. No pack quests are known to involve it, and the in-pack crafting recipe hasn't been confirmed.

How do you get started with Chance Cubes?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Chance Cubes is a Lucky Block style mod. You open its blocks to get random rewards, and some are helpful while others can be devastating. The rewards range from hordes of zombies and death traps to ones that build full houses and give you next-level items.[1]

The mod's advancement tab starts with "A Game of Chance and Skill", so you can check your progress there as you go.[3]

Step 1: Make a Chance Cube

Everything starts with the Chance Cube. You can find these blocks while exploring, but you can also craft them yourself, so you don't have to go hunting. Here is the in-pack recipe:[1][4]

Watch out: Rewards can be devastating as well as helpful, so be careful where you open a cube.[1]

Step 2: Make the Tier 1 Chance Pendant

The Tier 1 Chance Pendant is the base of the whole pendant line. The scanner, the Silk Touch pendant and the higher pendant tiers all build on it, so make it before anything else.[4]

Step 3: Pick your extras

Once you have a Tier 1 pendant, two side items open up. The first is the Chance Cube Scanner.[4]

Step 4: Upgrade the pendant

When you want to go further, the pendant has two more tiers. The Tier 2 Chance Pendant is crafted from the Tier 1 pendant, and the Tier 3 Chance Pendant is crafted from the Tier 2 pendant.[4]

How does Chance Cubes work?

4 parts

Chance Cubes is not a machine mod. There is no power, fluid or item pipe system to set up. It is a mod about blocks that give you a random reward when you open them, and the real mechanics are how you get the cubes, how rewards are picked, and which rewards the pack lets happen.[1]

Getting cubes

You craft a Chance Cube using lapis. The mod's page describes it as sacrificing some of your lapis to get these blocks.[1][5]

The mod's own data does include an ore-style feature for the Overworld, with a vein size of 4 and a count of 16, between heights -64 and 192. The pack's config turns that off: [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GenerateAsOre]], [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GenerateOnSurface]] and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChestLoot]] are all false. The pack also changed [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.SurfaceGenerationAmount]] from the mod default of 100 to 0. So in this pack, crafting is your reliable source.[6][7][8][9]

Chance values and reward picking

Each cube has a chance value, and rewards also have chance values. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChanceRangeMin]] and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChanceRangeMax]] set how far a cube can reach either side of its own value. The config's example: with a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15, a cube with a chance value of 0 can get rewards from -10 to 15. This pack uses the mod default of 10 for both.[9]

If [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.RewardsEqualChance]] were true, chance values would be ignored and every reward would be equally likely. In this pack it is false. The D20 cubes follow a similar switch: [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.D20UseNormalChanceValues]] is false, so D20s only have a chance value of either -100 or 100.[9]

Pendants and the scanner

Pendants come in three tiers: Tier 1 Chance Pendant, Tier 2 Chance Pendant and Tier 3 Chance Pendant. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.PendantUses]] is the number of uses for a pendant, and it is 32 here, the same as the mod default.[3][9]

Which rewards can happen

The reward list lives in a config file, where each reward is switched on or off for everyone. You can also use the in-game commands /chancecubes enableReward and /chancecubes disableReward, but those do not change the value in the file.[10]

In this pack's file, these rewards are set to false: rewards.chancecubes:boss_demonic_blaze, rewards.chancecubes:boss_evil_witch, rewards.chancecubes:boss_mimic, rewards.chancecubes:boss_ravager, rewards.chancecubes:clear_inventory, rewards.chancecubes:coal_to_diamonds, rewards.chancecubes:diamond_block, rewards.chancecubes:giant_chance_cube, rewards.chancecubes:inventory_bomb, rewards.chancecubes:ores_galore and rewards.chancecubes:redstone_diamond. The rest of the listed rewards are enabled.[10]

A few more settings in the server config shape how rewards behave. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.EnableDefaultRewards]] is true, so the default rewards are loaded. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.FallingBlockDropHeight]] is 20, the number of blocks above the cube that falling-block rewards drop from. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.BlockRestoreBlacklist]] and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.BlockedWorlds]] are both empty.[9]

Watch out: The pack leaves [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GloballyDisabledRewards]] on. Per the config comment, that makes the mod send its version to a web server to check for rewards that are disabled for that version, and the version number is logged.[9]

If you make your own packs, the mod supports custom rewards through an easy-to-read JSON format.[1]

The mod's language file also lists a Chance Icosahedron, a Giant Chance Cube, a Compact Giant Chance Cube and a Chance Cube Dispenser as blocks. It lists a Creative Chance Pendant, a Reward Selector Pendant and a Single Use Reward Selector Pendant as items. Two advancements mention opening a Chance Icosahedron and breaking a Giant Chance Cube.[3]

Unverified The sources do not explain what the Chance Cube Scanner, the Silk Touch Chance Pendant, the Chance Cube Dispenser or the Chance Icosahedron do in detail, or how the Reward Selector Pendants are obtained.

How do you progress through Chance Cubes?

3 parts

Chance Cubes doesn't have a long tech tree. Your progression is the pendant line: a base Chance Cube, then three pendant tiers, plus two side items that branch off Tier 1. Everything below is the in-pack recipe, so you can plan your resources before you start.[5]

Getting Chance Cubes

You can craft the basic Chance Cube yourself, so you don't have to wait on world luck.[5]

You can also find them in the world. The ore generation adds Chance Cubes to the Overworld underground, replacing both stone and deepslate. Each vein has a size of 4, and the generator tries 16 times per chunk, between heights -64 and 192.[6][7][8]

The mod also has a separate world generation feature that runs in Overworld biomes at the top layer step. The sources don't say what it places, so I won't guess.[11][12][13]

The mod's chance cube chest block rolls its loot table 10 times, and each roll has a 0.25 chance of giving you a Chance Cube.[14]

The pendant tiers

The Tier 1 Chance Pendant is your entry point. It is crafted from storage blocks, so you'll need to be well into your resource gathering before you can make it.[5]

Two extra items start from the Tier 1 pendant. The Chance Cube Scanner is one, and the Silk Touch Chance Pendant is the other.[5]

Tip: Both side items consume a Tier 1 pendant. If you want them alongside a Tier 2 or Tier 3 pendant, craft an extra Tier 1 pendant for each one.[5]

Unverified What each pendant tier actually changes (for example how it affects the outcomes of a Chance Cube) is not confirmed by the available sources for this pack.

Which Chance Cubes config options matter?

3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Chance Cubes keeps most of its settings in one server config file, plus a second file that switches individual rewards on and off. Here are the ones you're most likely to care about, and exactly how this pack sets them.[15][16]

World generation

The only value in the main config that the pack flags as changed from the mod default is [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.SurfaceGenerationAmount]]. The pack sets it to 0, and the mod default is 100. The option's description says the chance of a chunk getting a surface cube is 1 divided by this number, and the listed valid range is above 0, so 0 is outside that range. What the game actually does with 0 is unverified.[15]

  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GenerateOnSurface]] is false, so cubes don't generate on the surface of the world.[15]
  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GenerateAsOre]] is false, so cubes don't generate like ores.[15]
  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChestLoot]] is false, so cubes don't show up as chest loot.[15]
  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.BlockedWorlds]] is an empty list, so no worlds are blocked.[15]

Chance values and rewards

[[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChanceRangeMin]] and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChanceRangeMax]] are both 10, which matches the mod default. Per the option's description, these set how far a cube's chance value can swing when it picks a reward.[15]

  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.D20UseNormalChanceValues]] is false, so D20s only have a chance value of either -100 or 100.[15]
  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.RewardsEqualChance]] is false, so chance values still matter when a reward is picked.[15]
  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.EnableDefaultRewards]] is true, so the default rewards are loaded.[15]
  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.PendantUses]] is 32, the mod default.[15]
  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.FallingBlockDropHeight]] is 20, the mod default.[15]
  • [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.DisableGiantCC]] is false, but the giant chance cube reward is switched off separately (see below).[15][16]

Rewards the pack turns off

The reward switches live in a separate file. In this pack these rewards are set to false: rewards.chancecubes:boss_demonic_blaze, rewards.chancecubes:boss_evil_witch, rewards.chancecubes:boss_mimic, rewards.chancecubes:boss_ravager, rewards.chancecubes:clear_inventory, rewards.chancecubes:inventory_bomb and rewards.chancecubes:giant_chance_cube. The ore and diamond rewards rewards.chancecubes:coal_to_diamonds, rewards.chancecubes:diamond_block, rewards.chancecubes:ores_galore and rewards.chancecubes:redstone_diamond are off too. Every other reward listed in that file is true.[16]

Tip: The file's own comment says the in-game commands /chancecubes enableReward and /chancecubes disableReward toggle rewards, but they don't change the values saved in this config.[16]
Watch out: GloballyDisabledRewards is true in this pack. The option's description says that when it's on, the mod sends your Chance Cubes version to a web server to check for disabled rewards, and that version number is logged.[15]

What changed in Chance Cubes between versions?

There isn't much version history to report for Chance Cubes in this pack. FTB Skies 2 1.23.0 ships Chance Cubes 1.21.1-5.0.2.517, and the mod has been in the pack since FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier.[17]

The mod's changelog for the 1.21.1-5.0.2.517 build lists bug fixes only, with no further detail on what was fixed.[18]

Unverified The sources here include no pack changelog entries for Chance Cubes, so any changes the pack itself made to this mod across releases are not shown.
