What is Chance Cubes?
2 parts
Chance Cubes adds mystical blocks that give you a random reward when you open them. It's a Lucky Block alternative, so you never know what you'll get.[1]
Some rewards are helpful and others can be devastating. They range from hordes of zombies and death traps to rewards that build full houses and hand out next-level items. Each reward has its own twist to keep it interesting.[1]
Who it's for
This mod is for you if you like a bit of risk and surprise in your run. You can find the blocks while exploring, or craft them yourself if you'd rather not go looking. Just be ready for the bad outcomes as well as the good ones.[1]
In this pack
The pack includes Chance Cubes version 1.21.1-5.0.2.517, and it was already present in this pack version or an earlier one.[2]
The mod can load custom rewards from an easy-to-read JSON file format, which is why modpack makers can add their own. Whether this pack adds any custom rewards isn't confirmed by the sources.[1]
Unverified The sources don't say where Chance Cubes fits in the pack's progression, and the mod isn't on the ATM Star path. No pack quests are known to involve it, and the in-pack crafting recipe hasn't been confirmed.
How do you get started with Chance Cubes?
4 parts
Chance Cubes is a Lucky Block style mod. You open its blocks to get random rewards, and some are helpful while others can be devastating. The rewards range from hordes of zombies and death traps to ones that build full houses and give you next-level items.[1]
The mod's advancement tab starts with "A Game of Chance and Skill", so you can check your progress there as you go.[3]
Step 1: Make a Chance Cube
Everything starts with the Chance Cube. You can find these blocks while exploring, but you can also craft them yourself, so you don't have to go hunting. Here is the in-pack recipe:[1][4]

Step 2: Make the Tier 1 Chance Pendant
The Tier 1 Chance Pendant is the base of the whole pendant line. The scanner, the Silk Touch pendant and the higher pendant tiers all build on it, so make it before anything else.[4]

Step 3: Pick your extras
Once you have a Tier 1 pendant, two side items open up. The first is the Chance Cube Scanner.[4]

Step 4: Upgrade the pendant
When you want to go further, the pendant has two more tiers. The Tier 2 Chance Pendant is crafted from the Tier 1 pendant, and the Tier 3 Chance Pendant is crafted from the Tier 2 pendant.[4]

Unverified The sources I have don't explain what the pendants and the scanner actually do in game, or how the pendant tiers change the rewards you get. Test them yourself before relying on them.
How does Chance Cubes work?
5 parts
Chance Cubes has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids in the sources for this pack. It's a Lucky Block style mod: you open a block and get a random reward, good or bad. So this section covers how rewards get picked, how you get the cubes, and what the pack changed.[1]
Getting Chance Cubes
The mod's own description says you can skip exploring and craft Chance Cube by sacrificing some lapis.[1]

In this pack, natural generation is turned off. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GenerateOnSurface]], [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GenerateAsOre]] and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChestLoot]] are all false. The pack also changed [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.SurfaceGenerationAmount]] from the mod default of 100 to 0. That option is the chance for a chunk to get a surface cube, worked out as 1 divided by the value.[5]
How rewards are chosen
A cube has a chance value, and it picks rewards from a range around that value. The range is set by [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChanceRangeMin]] and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChanceRangeMax]]. The pack keeps both at the mod default of 10. The config's own example: with a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15, a cube with a chance value of 0 can get rewards from -10 to 15.[5]
[[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.RewardsEqualChance]] is false here. If it were true, the mod would ignore chance values and give every reward an equal chance.[5]
The D20 variant is handled separately. With [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.D20UseNormalChanceValues]] set to false, as in this pack, a D20 only has a chance value of either -100 or 100. If it were true, a D20 could have any value from -100 to 100.[5]
[[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.EnableDefaultRewards]] is true, so the built-in reward set is loaded. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.DisableGiantCC]] is false, so Giant Chance Cubes are allowed. There is even an advancement for breaking one.[3][5]
Turning rewards on and off
Every reward has an on/off switch in the global rewards file. You can also use /chancecubes enableReward and /chancecubes disableReward in game. Those commands don't change the value saved in the config file.[6]
In the part of the file the sources show, the pack switches off these rewards: rewards.chancecubes:boss_demonic_blaze, rewards.chancecubes:boss_evil_witch, rewards.chancecubes:boss_mimic, rewards.chancecubes:boss_ravager, rewards.chancecubes:clear_inventory, rewards.chancecubes:coal_to_diamonds and rewards.chancecubes:diamond_block. The other rewards shown, such as rewards.chancecubes:anvil_rain and rewards.chancecubes:explosion, are enabled. The rest of the file isn't shown in the sources, so I can't tell you the state of the other rewards.[6]
Other reward-related settings: [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.FallingBlockDropHeight]] is 20, the number of blocks above the cube that a falling block is dropped from. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.BlockedWorlds]] and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.BlockRestoreBlacklist]] are both empty in this pack. The blacklist lists blocks that shouldn't be replaced when a reward is restored after it ends.[5]
Pendants and the scanner
Pendants have a limited number of uses. [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.PendantUses]] is 32 in this pack, the same as the mod default.[5]
The pack has three pendant tiers: Tier 1 Chance Pendant, Tier 2 Chance Pendant and Tier 3 Chance Pendant. There is also a Silk Touch Chance Pendant and a Chance Cube Scanner. These are the in-pack recipes:[4]

Custom rewards
If you're building your own pack or addon, the mod supports custom rewards through an easy-to-read JSON format.[1]
How do you progress through Chance Cubes?
3 parts
Chance Cubes has no quest line to follow in this pack, so your progression is all about the recipes. The good news is that the path is short and easy to read: you start with the cube itself, then climb a ladder of three pendant tiers, and a couple of side items branch off the first pendant.[4]
Step 1: The Chance Cube
Everything starts with the Chance Cube. It has its own mod recipe in the pack, so you can craft it right away without anything else from the mod.[4]
Crafting Shaped
| any lapi gems | any lapi gems | any lapi gems |
| any lapi gems | any lapi storage blocks | any lapi gems |

Step 2: The pendant tiers
The pendants form a three-step ladder. The Tier 1 Chance Pendant is crafted from raw materials, and it is the base for everything else in the progression.[4]

| any gold storage block | any lapi storage blocks | any gold storage block |
| any lapi storage blocks | any diamond storage block | any lapi storage blocks |

From there, each upgrade builds on the pendant one tier below it. The Tier 2 Chance Pendant is made from the Tier 1 pendant.[4]

| any lapi storage blocks | any lapi storage blocks | |
| any gold storage block | any lapi storage blocks | any gold storage block |
Recipe id: chancecubes:tier_2_pendant_crafting
The last step is the Tier 3 Chance Pendant, which is made from the Tier 2 pendant. You can't skip a tier, so craft them in order.[4]

Side branches from the Tier 1 pendant
Two utility items also start from the Tier 1 pendant instead of continuing up the tier ladder. That means you can pick them up as soon as you have your first pendant.[4]
- The Chance Cube Scanner is crafted from a Tier 1 pendant.[4]
- The Silk Touch Chance Pendant is also crafted from a Tier 1 pendant.[4]

Unverified What each pendant tier actually changes about the drops you get is not confirmed by the sources available for this guide, so it isn't described here. No quests involving this mod were found either.
Which Chance Cubes config options matter?
3 parts
Chance Cubes keeps most of its settings in one server config file, plus a second file that switches individual rewards on and off. Here are the ones you're most likely to care about, and exactly how this pack sets them.[5][6]
World generation
The only value in the main config that the pack flags as changed from the mod default is [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.SurfaceGenerationAmount]]. The pack sets it to 0, and the mod default is 100. The option's description says the chance of a chunk getting a surface cube is 1 divided by this number, and the listed valid range is above 0, so 0 is outside that range. What the game actually does with 0 is unverified.[5]
- [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GenerateOnSurface]] is false, so cubes don't generate on the surface of the world.[5]
- [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.GenerateAsOre]] is false, so cubes don't generate like ores.[5]
- [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChestLoot]] is false, so cubes don't show up as chest loot.[5]
- [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.BlockedWorlds]] is an empty list, so no worlds are blocked.[5]
Chance values and rewards
[[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChanceRangeMin]] and [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.ChanceRangeMax]] are both 10, which matches the mod default. Per the option's description, these set how far a cube's chance value can swing when it picks a reward.[5]
- [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.D20UseNormalChanceValues]] is false, so D20s only have a chance value of either -100 or 100.[5]
- [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.RewardsEqualChance]] is false, so chance values still matter when a reward is picked.[5]
- [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.EnableDefaultRewards]] is true, so the default rewards are loaded.[5]
- [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.PendantUses]] is 32, the mod default.[5]
- [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.FallingBlockDropHeight]] is 20, the mod default.[5]
- [[config:config/chancecubes/chancecubes-server.toml#General Settings.DisableGiantCC]] is false, but the giant chance cube reward is switched off separately (see below).[5][6]
Rewards the pack turns off
The reward switches live in a separate file. In this pack these rewards are set to false: rewards.chancecubes:boss_demonic_blaze, rewards.chancecubes:boss_evil_witch, rewards.chancecubes:boss_mimic, rewards.chancecubes:boss_ravager, rewards.chancecubes:clear_inventory, rewards.chancecubes:inventory_bomb and rewards.chancecubes:giant_chance_cube. The ore and diamond rewards rewards.chancecubes:coal_to_diamonds, rewards.chancecubes:diamond_block, rewards.chancecubes:ores_galore and rewards.chancecubes:redstone_diamond are off too. Every other reward listed in that file is true.[6]
What changed in Chance Cubes between versions?
FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships with Chance Cubes version 1.21.1-5.0.2.517. The mod was first included in FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack for a long time.[2]
The mod's own changelog for 1.21.1-5.0.2.517 only has a "Bug fixes" heading. It doesn't say which bugs were fixed, so there are no specific changes to point you to.[7]
Unverified The sources here include no pack changelog entries for Chance Cubes, so they don't show whether the pack changed anything about the mod in any release. Check the pack's own changelogs for that.
