What is Sophisticated Backpacks?

Sophisticated Backpacks is part of this pack's mod list. The pack ships version 3.26.9 of the mod, from the file sophisticatedbackpacks-26.1.2-3.26.9.2193.jar.[1]

Unverified The sources here do not show where the pack's quest book places this mod: no chapter, group, or neighbouring quests, and no role on the ATM Star path. Check the quest book in-game for any mention.

How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 guide

Sophisticated Backpacks gives you wearable storage that grows through tiers and takes upgrades. In this pack the sensible order is: make a basic Backpack, move up the tiers as your metals allow, then fill the upgrade slots. Here is how that goes, with the pack's own numbers.[2]

Step 1: craft a Backpack

The basic Backpack. Everything else in this guide builds on it.

Why start here? Storage and upgrade slots depend on the tier. The pack's config sets the slot counts below, and they match the mod defaults, so the pack has not changed them.[2]

  • Leather: 27 inventory slots, 1 upgrade slot.[2]
  • Copper: 45 inventory slots, 1 upgrade slot.[2]
  • Iron: 54 inventory slots, 2 upgrade slots.[2]
  • Gold: 81 inventory slots, 3 upgrade slots.[2]
  • Diamond: 108 inventory slots, 5 upgrade slots.[2]
Watch out: The pack changed nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks to 2 (the mod default is 3). That is the most backpacks you can carry in your inventory without getting slowness, so don't hoard spares.[2]

Step 2: move up a tier

Upgrading a backpack is its own recipe type in the pack, so you don't start from scratch. The Copper Backpack is the first step above the basic tier.[3]

The Iron Backpack has two recipes in the pack. This is the one whose id ends in from_copper. Iron is where you get your second upgrade slot.[2][3]

The Gold Backpack and Diamond Backpack have their own recipes too. The Netherite Backpack is made with a smithing-style recipe type instead.[3]

Step 3: pick your first upgrades

Upgrade slots are scarce at low tiers, so choose carefully. A good first pick is the Magnet Upgrade. In the config it pulls in items within 3 blocks of the backpack, and the Advanced version reaches 5 blocks.[2]

The Stack Upgrade Starter Tier is the entry point for stack upgrades. The config allows up to 3 stack upgrades per backpack.[2][3]

Per-backpack limits are set in maxUpgradesPerStorage: 1 from the jukebox_upgrades group, 1 from the furnace_upgrades group and 3 from stack_upgrades.[2]

    Good to know early

    • Backpacks can't hold Dank Storage items. disallowedItems blocks dankstorage:dank_1 to dankstorage:dank_7 from Dank Storage.[2]
    • Other players can't open your worn backpack, because allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is false.[2]
    • Mobs can spawn wearing backpacks, with a 0.01 chance, and a mob killed by a player drops its backpack with a 0.5 chance. So fighting can also get you a backpack.[2]

    How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?

    7 parts

Same as in the FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 guide

A Sophisticated Backpack is a portable inventory with upgrade slots, and almost everything interesting about it comes from those upgrades. This section covers how the tiers scale, how the upgrades handle items, fluids and energy, and the limits the pack puts on them.[2]

    Tiers, slots and upgrade slots

Each tier has its own inventory size and number of upgrade slots. In this pack these are all the mod's default values, so nothing has been changed here.[2]

    Smithing Backpack Upgrade (sophisticatedbackpacks)

      Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:netherite_backpack

The Netherite Backpack uses its own smithing-style backpack upgrade recipe type.

      Carrying too many backpacks

This is one of the pack's changes. nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks is 2 here, where the mod default is 3. Carry more than that in your inventory and you get slowness, since nerfs.tooManyBackpacksSlowness is on and the effect is Minecraft's slowness. Every backpack over the limit adds one slowness level, going by a ratio of 1 set in nerfs.slownessLevelsPerAdditionalBackpack.[2]

Active upgrades such as magnet, pickup, cooking and feeding are not limited to the worn backpack, because nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false. Other players cannot open a backpack you are wearing by right clicking your back, since allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is false.[2]

      Upgrade limits

Some upgrades are capped per backpack. maxUpgradesPerStorage allows 1 jukebox upgrade, 1 furnace upgrade and 3 stack upgrades. On top of that, the backpack screen refuses a second Everlasting, Inception, Tool Swapper or Mob Catcher upgrade, and the Inception upgrade only goes into a top-level backpack.[2][4]

The Inception upgrade lets a backpack hold other backpacks and still use them. In this pack both inceptionUpgrade.upgradesInContainedBackpacksAreFunctional and inceptionUpgrade.upgradesUseInventoriesOfBackpacksInBackpack are true. The upgrade has a setting for whether upgrades work with the main backpack's inventory first or with the inner backpacks first. You cannot remove it while there are backpacks inside.[2][4]

The stack upgrade will not stack bundles or shulker boxes of any colour, as listed in stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems. Items from Dank Storage (dank_1 to dank_7) are blocked from going into backpacks at all via disallowedItems. Backpacks cannot be placed inside container items (canBePlacedInContainerItems is false).[2]

      Fluids and energy

The Tank upgrade holds 4,000 mB per row of storage slots (tankUpgrade.capacityPerSlotRow). Its base transfer rate is 20 mB per operation, and both the capacity and the transfer rate are multiplied by your rows of slots and the stack multiplier. Fluid containers in the tank slots fill or drain one bucket at a time, with a cooldown of 20 ticks between actions (tankUpgrade.autoFillDrainContainerCooldown).[2]

The Pump upgrade has a base rate of 20 mB per operation (pumpUpgrade.maxInputOutput), scaled by rows and stack multiplier, and it has 4 fluid filter slots (pumpUpgrade.filterSlots).[2]

The Battery upgrade stores 10,000 FE per row of slots (batteryUpgrade.energyPerSlotRow) and moves a base 20 FE per operation (batteryUpgrade.maxInputOutput), scaled in the same way as the tank.[2]

The backpack item itself can also be filled and drained by other mods' tanks, because itemFluidHandlerEnabled is on.[2]

The XP Pump can mend items, since xpPumpUpgrade.mendingOn is true. It spends at most 5 experience points per mending operation (xpPumpUpgrade.maxXpPointsPerMending).[2]

      Cooking, magnets and compacting

The smelting, blasting and smoking upgrades, and their auto versions, run at vanilla furnace speed and fuel use: every speed and fuel efficiency multiplier is 1. The auto versions have 8 input filter slots and 4 fuel filter slots. Only 1 furnace-type upgrade fits per backpack.[2]

The Auto-blasting Upgrade is crafted from the auto-smelting version.

A magnet pulls in items within a range of 3 blocks for the basic version (magnetUpgrade.magnetRange) and 5 blocks for the Advanced Magnet Upgrade (advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange). The basic magnet has 9 filter slots (magnetUpgrade.filterSlots) and the advanced one 16 (advancedMagnetUpgrade.filterSlots).[2]

      Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:advanced_magnet_upgrade_from_basic

Advanced upgrades use the next-tier upgrade recipe type, and the Advanced Magnet Upgrade also has a separate recipe from the basic one.

The Compacting Upgrade also tries an extra hollow 3x3 shape ("111/101/111", 8 items) on top of the usual shapes, through compactingUpgrade.additionalCompactingShapes.[2]

      Mob Catcher

A captured mob takes up an empty block of slots in the backpack inventory. The basic Mob Catcher can take mobs costing up to 18 slots, the Advanced one up to 72. Hostile mobs cost double (multiplier 2) and need the Advanced Mob Catcher Upgrade. Animals use a multiplier of 1.[2][4]

Players, bosses, mobs with inventories, and mobs with passengers or vehicles cannot be captured. The pack also blocks the entity tag ftb:easy_npc. Release your captured mobs before you remove the upgrade.[2][4]

Backpacks on mobs and in chests

Mobs can spawn wearing backpacks, with a chance of 0.01. The tier weights are 625 leather, 250 copper, 125 iron, 25 gold, 5 diamond and 1 netherite. A mob killed by a player drops its backpack with a 0.5 chance, plus 0.15 per looting level. Backpacks and upgrades also turn up in vanilla chests, since chestLootEnabled is true.[2][5]

When you break a placed backpack, its loot table copies the backpack data onto the dropped item, so the contents and upgrades stay with it.[6][7][8][9][10][11]

How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?

      4 parts

Same as in the FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 guide

There are no quest steps to follow for this mod, so progression is a matter of crafting your way up the tiers and picking up lucky finds in chests. The backpack line goes Backpack, Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack, Diamond Backpack and finally Netherite Backpack.[3]

      The backpack tiers

The base backpack has its own recipe type. Every step above it from copper to diamond uses a backpack upgrade recipe, so you craft each tier from the one below it. Here is the base backpack first.[3]

The last step is different. The Netherite Backpack uses a smithing backpack upgrade recipe type instead of the plain backpack upgrade type used by the lower tiers.[3]

      Smithing Backpack Upgrade (sophisticatedbackpacks)

        Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:netherite_backpack

Every tier has a block loot table that copies the backpack's data onto the item it drops, so your contents and upgrades stay with the backpack when you pick it up again.[6][7][8][9][10][11]

        Finding backpacks in chests

You do not have to craft everything. The mod injects backpacks into some vanilla chest loot, and the higher tiers show up in more dangerous places. Each of these pools is mostly empty, so treat them as a bonus.[12][13][14][15][16]

        • Spawn bonus chest: the plain Backpack is the only item in the injected pool, with a weight of 100.[16]
        • Abandoned mineshaft: the plain, copper, iron and gold backpacks, plus a Magnet Upgrade. The lower tiers are weighted higher (7 for the plain backpack, 5 for copper, 3 for iron), against an empty weight of 84.[12]
        • Desert pyramid: copper, iron and gold backpacks and a Magnet Upgrade, with an empty weight of 89.[14]
        • Bastion treasure: iron and gold backpacks and a Feeding Upgrade, with an empty weight of 90.[13]
        • End city treasure: the diamond and gold backpacks and an Advanced Magnet Upgrade, with an empty weight of 90.[15]

Unverified The mod also injects loot into nether fortress, shipwreck treasure, simple dungeon and woodland mansion chests, but the sources here do not show what those pools contain. Check the loot table files in the mod's data folder for the details.

        Stack upgrades

Stack upgrades come in a Starter Tier and Tiers 1 to 4. Each has its own crafting recipe: Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3 and Stack Upgrade Tier 4. Tier 1 also has a second recipe that starts from the Starter Tier.[3]

        Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:stack_upgrade_tier_1_from_starter

Tier 1 built from the Starter Tier upgrade.

The pack also has conversion recipes that jump straight from one stack upgrade tier to a higher one, for example Stack Upgrade Conversion: Tier 1 to Tier 4. There are conversions from the Starter Tier to Tiers 1 to 4, from Tier 1 to Tiers 2 to 4, from Tier 2 to Tiers 3 and 4, and from Tier 3 to Tier 4.[3]

There are also three downgrade items, Stack Downgrade Tier 1, Stack Downgrade Tier 2 and Stack Downgrade Tier 3, each with a crafting recipe.[3]

        Upgrade tiers

Many functional upgrades have an advanced version made with the next-tier recipe type, such as the Advanced Filter Upgrade, Advanced Restock Upgrade and Advanced Void Upgrade. The Advanced Magnet Upgrade has two recipes, one of which starts from the basic magnet upgrade.[3]

The smelting line follows the same pattern. The Blasting Upgrade and Smoking Upgrade can each be crafted from the Smelting Upgrade, and the Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade can each be crafted from the Auto-smelting Upgrade.[3]

The Advanced Alchemy Upgrade has an extra recipe that comes from Sophisticated Storage, which converts that mod's advanced alchemy upgrade into the backpack version.[3]

Which Sophisticated Backpacks config options matter?

        5 parts

Same as in the FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 guide

Good news first: this pack leaves almost everything in Sophisticated Backpacks at the mod's own values. Only one option in the server config is marked as changed from the mod default, and it is the one you will feel the most.[2]

The one change: how many backpacks you can carry

nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks is set to 2 in this pack, down from the mod default of 3. That is the number of backpacks in your inventory that will not cause slowness. Go over it and you get slowed down.[2]

The penalty itself is unchanged. nerfs.tooManyBackpacksSlowness is true, the effect is minecraft:slowness, and nerfs.slownessLevelsPerAdditionalBackpack is 1 level per backpack over the limit.[2]

Tip: Stay at or under the limit from nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks, which is 2 in this pack. Also, nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false, so active upgrades like magnet and pickup are not limited to the backpack you are wearing.[2]

        Backpack sizes

Every tier uses the mod's default size. Here is what each one gives you:[2]

        Upgrade limits and magnets

maxUpgradesPerStorage is set so that each backpack can hold 1 jukebox upgrade, 1 furnace upgrade and 3 stack upgrades.[2]

The magnet upgrade picks up items within 3 blocks (magnetUpgrade.magnetRange), and the advanced magnet reaches 5 blocks (advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange). Both match the mod defaults.[2]

What can go inside a backpack

disallowedItems lists every Dank Storage tier, dankstorage:dank_1 through dankstorage:dank_7, so you cannot put a Dank in a backpack. stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems stops the bundle and every colour of shulker box from being stacked by a stack upgrade.[2]

Other players cannot open the backpack you are wearing, because allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is false. The mob catcher upgrade refuses anything tagged #ftb:easy_npc, via mobCatcherUpgrade.entityBlockList.[2]

        Mobs wearing backpacks and loot

Mobs can spawn wearing backpacks: entityBackpackAdditions.chance is 0.01, and entityBackpackAdditions.addLoot is true so they carry loot. If you kill one as a player, entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance gives a 0.5 chance of the backpack dropping. Chest loot is also on, as chestLootEnabled is true.[2][5]
