What is Plonk?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Plonk is a small quality-of-life mod that lets you place items down in the world without needing a block for them. You look at the side of a block, press the Place Item key, and the item you're holding sits there as a display. It's great for showing off gear, tools and rare finds in your base. This pack includes Plonk 10.0.6 for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge.[1][2]

What you can do with it

  • Place up to 4 stacks of items on the side of any block with the Place Item key, which defaults to P. The maximum size of each stack is configurable.[1]
  • Rotate a single item to one of 16 directions by sneaking and right-clicking with an empty hand. The mod page says this needs two empty hands.[1]
  • Rotate the whole tile of items to one of 4 directions by sneaking and pressing the Place Item key with an empty hand.[1]
  • Pull items out with automation. Automation can extract from placed items but can't insert into them.[1]
  • Placed items are no longer washed away by fluids, and they can be waterlogged.[1]
Tip: By default, Plonk's P key conflicts with the Social Interactions Screen key in newer Minecraft versions. If P does nothing useful for you, change one of the two keybinds in the controls menu.[1]

Who it's for

The mod page says the look of the placed items and the mechanics are currently subject to change, so treat the details here as how Plonk behaves in this version.[1]

Plonk's server config lives in a file called plonk-server.toml inside your save's serverconfig folder, according to the mod page. I haven't checked its individual options against this pack, so look at the file itself before relying on any value.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't say where Plonk fits into this pack's progression. They don't show any quests that involve it, and they don't place it on the ATM Star path.

How do you get started with Plonk?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Good news: Plonk doesn't have a crafting chain to work through. There's nothing to build first. It lets you place items down in the world, so your first steps are learning the controls.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Look at the side of a block and press the Place Item key, which defaults to P. This places the item you're holding on that block.[1]
  2. Place more items on the same spot. You can put up to 4 stacks of items on the side of any block.[1]
  3. Rotate a single item by sneaking and right-clicking it with an empty hand. Each item can face 16 different directions. The mod page says this needs two empty hands.[1]
  4. Rotate the whole tile of items at once by sneaking and pressing the Place Item key with an empty hand. The whole tile turns to 4 different directions.[1]
Watch out: The P key conflicts with the Social Interactions Screen key on Minecraft 1.16.4 and newer. If P does nothing, or opens the wrong screen, change one of the two bindings in your controls menu.[1]

Good to know

  • Placed items can be extracted by automation, but automation can't insert items into them.[1]
  • Placed items are no longer washed away by fluids, and they can be waterlogged on Minecraft 1.16.3 and newer.[1]
  • The maximum size of each stack is configurable. The mod page says the setting lives in plonk-server.toml, inside the serverconfig folder of your save, on Minecraft 1.13 and newer.[1]
  • The mod's author says the look of placed items and the mechanics are currently subject to change.[1]

Unverified Nothing available to me shows any in-pack recipes, quests or changed config values for Plonk, so I can't say whether this pack alters the defaults above, including the stack size limit. Check the config in your own world to see the actual value.

How does Plonk work?

4 parts

Plonk is a small, simple mod: it lets you put items down in the world instead of dropping them. There are no machines, multiblocks, power or fluid systems here. The mechanics come down to placing, rotating, pulling items out with automation, and two config options.[1]

Placing items

Look at a block and press the Place Item key, which defaults to P. You can put up to 4 stacks of items on the side of any block. The key is listed under the Plonk category in the controls screen.[1][3]

Everything you place is stored in a single Placed Items block, which the mod names Placed Items.[3][4]

Watch out: On Minecraft 1.16.4 and newer, the P key conflicts with the Social Interactions Screen key. If P does nothing useful for you, rebind one of the two in the controls screen.[1]

Rotating

  • Rotate a single item with Sneak + Right Click using an empty hand. Items can face 16 different directions. The project page notes this needs two empty hands.[1]
  • Rotate the whole tile of items at once with Sneak + the Place Item key using an empty hand. The whole tile turns to 4 different directions.[1]

Automation and fluids

Automation can extract items from placed items, but it cannot insert them. So you can pull items out with a pipe or hopper-style setup, but you can't feed a placed-items block that way.[1]

Placed items are no longer washed away by fluids, and they can be waterlogged on Minecraft 1.16.3 and newer.[1]

Config in this pack

maxStackSize sets the maximum stack size per slot. This pack leaves it at -1, which is also the mod default, and both -1 and 0 mean the default size is used. Going above 64 needs a mod like StackUp!.[5]

unplaceableItems is a list of items that cannot be placed, written as "mod_id:item_id". This pack leaves the list empty. You can also use the plonk:unplaceable item tag.[5]

That tag already contains Placed Items, so you can't place a placed-items block inside another one. It also optionally includes the Carry On entity and tile item tags, which keeps items from Carry On out of Plonk's hands when that mod is present.[4]

How do you progress through Plonk?

1 part

Plonk doesn't have a tier ladder that the sources here can show, so there is no step-by-step progression to walk you through. The one thing I can confirm is how it decides which items are off limits.[4]

What the mod blocks from being placed

Plonk ships an item tag called unplaceable. It lists Placed Items directly, so those items are on the do-not-place list.[4]

The same tag also pulls in the carryon:entity_item and carryon:tile_item tags from Carry On. Both entries are marked as not required, so the tag still loads without Carry On.[4]

Unverified The sources here do not show whether the pack's quest book covers Plonk, or whether any crafting is tied to it. If you want to know where it fits in your progression, check the quest chapters in game.

Which Plonk config options matter?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Plonk has very little to configure, and this pack doesn't change any of it. Both options below are at their out-of-the-box behavior, so you don't need to edit anything to place items in the world.[6]

Max stack size

maxStackSize controls how many items fit in each slot of a placed stack. The pack sets it to -1, which is also the mod default. A value of -1 or 0 means the default size is used. The mod page says you can place up to 4 stacks on the side of a block, and that the size of each stack is configurable.[1][6]

Tip: Setting a value above 64 only works if you also have a mod like StackUp!. Plonk can't raise the limit on its own.[6]

Unplaceable items

unplaceableItems is a blacklist of items that can't be placed down. The pack leaves it as an empty list, so nothing is blocked by this option.[6]

If you want to block something yourself, the file's comment says to use the format "mod_id:item_id", for example "minecraft:carrot". You can also use the plonk:unplaceable item tag instead.[6]

What changed in Plonk between versions?

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships Plonk 10.0.10. The mod has been in the pack since FTB Evolution 2 1.0.2 or earlier, so it is not a new addition in this release.[7]

The one change the mod's own changelog lists for 10.0.10 is a bug fix: a stack overflow caused by unimplemented ItemOwner methods was fixed.[8]

The sources here do not include any pack changelog entries for this mod, and no changelogs for earlier Plonk versions, so I can't tell you what changed between other pack releases.[7][8]
