Mutant Monsters is a mod in FTB Evolution 2 1.4.0, where it is version 26.1.3. The mutants are back! Face scary creatures and powerful beasts like never before. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Mutant Monsters?

3 parts

Mutant Monsters adds mutated versions of Minecraft's classic mobs, each with its own devastating attacks and a unique reward. You fight the Mutant Zombie, Skeleton, Creeper, Enderman and more, and each one is a fresh challenge.[1]

This pack includes Mutant Monsters 26.1.3, the NeoForge build, and it was already in the pack by version 1.0.2.[2]

The mutants and their rewards

  • Mutant Zombie: a hulking brute with powerful smash attacks. Beat it to get the Hulk Hammer, a weapon that slams the ground and knocks back enemies.[1]
  • Mutant Skeleton: a deadly marksman. Its bones let you craft Mutant Skeleton Armor.[1]
  • Mutant Creeper: causes chain explosions and drops a Creeper Minion Egg when it dies.[1]
  • Mutant Enderman: a teleporting terror. Cut off its hand to get the Endersoul Hand, which gives you teleportation and block manipulation powers.[1]
  • Mutant Snow Golem: a strong ally that throws massive chunks of ice at enemies.[1]

Minions and Chemical X

A Creeper Minion Egg hatches an explosive ally, and you can tame and track these minions with a Creeper Minion Tracker. Destroying the egg instead gives you a Creeper Shard, a toxic weapon that causes explosions when used on terrain.[1]

Chemical X is a mysterious liquid that mutates mobs into powerful mutants or strange new creatures. Use it on a pig that ate a fermented spider eye and you get the fast, unpredictable Spider Pig.[1]

Setup notes

The mod must be installed on both client and server, and on NeoForge it needs Puzzles Lib. Its config files, where they exist, are named MOD_ID-client.toml, MOD_ID-common.toml or MOD_ID-server.toml in the config folder.[1]

How do you get started with Mutant Monsters?

3 parts

Mutant Monsters adds big, nasty versions of the vanilla mobs, and in this pack they are rare on purpose. The spawn weights for mutant_creeper_spawn_weight, mutant_enderman_spawn_weight, mutant_skeleton_spawn_weight and mutant_zombie_spawn_weight are all 0.05, which is 5% of the vanilla mob's spawn weight. That matches the mod default, so the pack has not changed it.[3]

Waiting around for a lucky spawn is slow, so your first job is to make your own mutants. That starts with Chemical X.[1][3]

Step 1: Craft Chemical X

This is the in-pack recipe for Chemical X.

Chemical X is a liquid that mutates mobs into powerful mutants or strange new creatures. The pack's mutant_x_conversions option lists what each mob turns into: creeper, enderman, skeleton, snow golem and zombie become their mutant versions, and a pig becomes a Spider Pig. These are the same as the mod defaults.[1][5]

The Spider Pig has an extra step. Feed a pig a Fermented Spider Eye first, then throw Chemical X at it.[1][6]

Step 2: Beat the mutants for their gear

Each mutant gives you something worth the fight. The Mutant Zombie drops the Hulk Hammer, a weapon that slams the ground and knocks enemies back. The Mutant Enderman's hand gives you the Endersoul Hand for teleportation and block manipulation, and in this pack its travel distance is set to 256 by endersoul_hand_teleport_distance, the same as the default.[1][5]

The Mutant Skeleton is a great early target, because its bones let you craft a full armor set. Here are the in-pack recipes for the pieces that have a listed bonus.[1][4]

Next: get a Creeper Minion

A Mutant Creeper drops a Creeper Minion Egg when it dies. Hatching it gives you an explosive Creeper Minion ally. If you destroy the egg instead, you get a Creeper Shard, a toxic weapon that causes explosions when used on terrain.[1][6]

Use Creeper Minion Tracker to tame and track your minions.

The tracker's screen lets you control each minion. It has settings for blast radius, whether it destroys blocks, one-time or continuous explosions, health, riding on your shoulder and always showing its name.[6]

Tip: Mutants can spawn in every biome and dimension where their vanilla counterparts are found, but at only 5% of the normal weight. Making them with Chemical X is far more reliable than hoping for a natural spawn.[3]

How does Mutant Monsters work?

6 parts

Mutant Monsters is all about creatures and the gear they drop, so the mechanics here are about how mutants spawn, how you create them, and what you get for beating them. This page sticks to what the pack's files and the mod's own data confirm.[1]

How mutants spawn

The Mutant Zombie, Skeleton, Creeper and Enderman spawn naturally. Each has a spawn weight set as a percentage of its vanilla counterpart's weight, and mutants can spawn in every biome and dimension where the vanilla mob can be found. In this pack all of them are left at the mod default of 0.05, which is 5%. Each option accepts a value from 0.0 to 1024.0, and changing it needs a world restart.[3]

The mod's mutant tag lists the Mutant Creeper, Enderman, Skeleton, Snow Golem and Zombie. The Mutant Snow Golem has no spawn weight option in the common config, and you create one with Chemical X instead (see below).[3][6][8]

Making your own mutants with Chemical X

Chemical X is the mod's mutation liquid. It turns mobs into mutants or into stranger creatures. Here is its in-pack recipe.[1]

What a target turns into is set by mutant_x_conversions. Each entry pairs a normal mob with its mutant. If a mob is not in the list, it only explodes and takes damage. This pack uses the mod default list:[5]

  • Creeper becomes Mutant Creeper.[5]
  • Enderman becomes Mutant Enderman.[5]
  • Skeleton becomes Mutant Skeleton.[5]
  • Snow Golem becomes Mutant Snow Golem.[5]
  • Zombie becomes Mutant Zombie.[5]
  • Pig becomes Spider Pig.[5]

The Spider Pig has an extra step. Feed a pig a Fermented Spider Eye first, then throw Chemical X at it. A Spider Pig eats beetroot, carrots, porkchops, potatoes and spider eyes.[1][6][9]

Mutant Zombie and the Hulk Hammer

The Mutant Zombie is a hulking brute with powerful smash attacks, and its loot table drops the Hulk Hammer. The hammer slams the ground and knocks back enemies.[1][10]

Mutant Skeleton and its armor

A Mutant Skeleton drops body parts: a limb, a pelvis, a rib, a shoulder pad and a skull. You craft the armor from these bones. Each armor piece has an in-pack recipe, shown below.[1][11][12][13][14][15]

The tracker's screen has these settings: Blast Radius, Destroy Blocks, Explosion (Continuous or One-Time), Health, Ride On Shoulder and Always Show Name.[6]

Mutant Enderman and the Endersoul Hand

Cut off a Mutant Enderman's hand to gain the Endersoul Hand, which gives teleportation and block manipulation powers. In this pack its maximum travel distance is the mod default of 256, and the option accepts values from 0 to 512 (endersoul_hand_teleport_distance). If the teleport fails, you get the message "Unable to teleport to location".[1][5][6]

Blocks in the wither-immune tag are listed as immune to being held, both by the Endersoul Hand and by the Mutant Enderman itself. The Mutant Enderman's dodge tag covers fall damage, explosions and projectiles.[17][18][19]

How do you progress through Mutant Monsters?

2 parts

The sources I have for Mutant Monsters in this pack don't show a tier ladder, so I won't invent one. What they do show is what the mutants drop and which items you can craft, and that is the path this section follows.[4]

What the mutants drop

When you break a placed Mutant Skeleton Skull block, it drops itself and keeps its custom name, damage, enchantments and repair cost.[25]

Items you can craft

The pack lists the mod's own recipes for Chemical X, the Creeper Minion Tracker and the Mutant Skeleton armor pieces. The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack versions.[4]

Unverified Where each mutant spawns, and what the Mutant Zombie and Spider Pig drop, is set in the mod's biome modifier, biome tag and loot table data files. The sources here do not show those files, so check them in game before you plan a hunt around them.

Which Mutant Monsters config options matter?

2 parts

Here is the good news first: every option below is set to the mod's own default in this pack. The pack changed none of them, so the numbers you see are what Mutant Monsters ships with.[3][5]

Spawn weights (common config)

These spawn options live in config/mutantmonsters-common.toml, one each for the mutant creeper, enderman, skeleton and zombie. Each one sets how often a mutant spawns as a percentage of the vanilla mob's spawn weight. Mutants can appear in every biome and dimension where their vanilla counterparts can be found. A value of 0.05 means 5%, and 1.0 means 100%. Changes need a world restart to apply.[3]

Tip: At 0.05 each mutant spawns at 5% of its vanilla mob's weight. If you want to see them more often, raise these values, then restart the world for the change to take effect.[3]

Server config

endersoul_hand_teleport_distance sets the maximum distance you can travel with the Endersoul Hand. The pack uses 256, which is the mod default, and the allowed range is 0 to 512.[5]

mutant_x_conversions controls what a target turns into when it is infested with a Mutant X potion. If a mob is not in the list, it only explodes and takes damage. The pack keeps the default list of conversions:[5]

  • Creeper becomes Mutant Creeper.[5]
  • Enderman becomes Mutant Enderman.[5]
  • Skeleton becomes Mutant Skeleton.[5]
  • Snow Golem becomes Mutant Snow Golem.[5]
  • Zombie becomes Mutant Zombie.[5]
  • Pig becomes Spider Pig.[5]

Each entry is written as two ids separated by a comma, with the second id being the mutant. You can leave out the namespace to use minecraft by default.[5]

What changed in Mutant Monsters between versions?

1 part

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships Mutant Monsters 26.1.3. The mod was already in the pack in 1.0.2 or earlier. The mod's own changelog covers the Minecraft 26.1.x line, and the releases are listed below from newest to oldest.[2][26]

Mod releases

  • v26.1.3 (2026-08-31): fixed the creeper minion only targeting mutant creepers. This is the version in the pack.[2][26]
  • v26.1.2 (2026-07-17): fixed a StackOverflowError in the custom bow multishot behavior when the Enchancement mod is installed.[26]
  • v26.1.1 (2026-05-25): fixed the advancement screen background texture, thanks to a contributor named seriousfreezing.[26]
  • v26.1.0 (2026-05-05): updated the mod to Minecraft 26.1.x.[26]

Every release after 26.1.0 is listed as a bug fix, so these updates don't add new content. The 26.1.3 fix changes who the creeper minion will target.[26]
